ABC added four more drama pilots, medical advocate drama The Advocate, from Sheldon Turner; Boom, the story of a modern energy boom in North Dakota, from producer Tony Krantz; The Adversaries, a legal soap from ER veteran David Zabel; and Kingmakers, a murder mystery from Revenge producer Sallie Patrick.
The Advocate, from Sheldon Turner and Jennifer Klein’s Vendetta Prods. and Warner Bros. TV, had a put pilot commitment. Written by Turner, the project was inspired by the real story of the Oscar-nominated writer’s former agent, Byrdie Lifson-Pompan. Lifson-Pompan was a top CAA literary agent whose roster included such heavyweights as Brett Ratner, Paul Haggis, Jim Sheridan and Jason Katims. She was misdiagnosed and her brain tumor went undetected until discovered by another doctor. She underwent surgery and fully recovered. Several years later, Lifson-Pompan, who also had other family members suffer from medical misdiagnoses, made a career change, leaving agenting after 22 years to pursue a career as a medical advocate. She teamed with Dr. Valerie Ulene, a medical doctor and a health education specialist, to launch Clear Health Advisors, a healthcare consulting and case management company that helps patients navigate the healthcare system, including getting an accurate diagnosis and finding the right treatment.
Written by Josh Pate and Rodes Fishburne, Boom, produced by ABC Studios, examines the biggest oil discovery in American history (bigger than Texas and as big as Saudi Arabia) which has triggered a geopolitical shift and an economic boom in North Dakota on a scale not seen since the American 1849 Gold Rush. This series tracks the epic pilgrimage of a young, ambitious couple to the oil fields of the Bakken seeking their fortune and a better life — it’s a classic tale with modern twists. As we follow their trials and tribulations in a modern day “Wild West”, they negotiate a colorful ensemble of roughnecks, grifters, oil barons, criminals, and fellow prospectors against a stark and beautiful backdrop.
Written and Executive Produced by David Zabel, The Adversaries, from ABC Studios, centers on the patriarch of a New York legal dynasty who becomes embroiled in a trial of his own, and his federal prosecutor daughter must decide which side she will fight on.
Written and executive produced by Sallie Patrick, Kingmakers, also from ABC Studios, centers on a young man whose sister is found dead during her freshman year at an elite Ivy League university. He adopts a new identity to infiltrate the school and its century-old secret society – consisting of privileged students, ambitious faculty, and high-profile alums – in order to investigate her death.
