As part of its expansion in comedy, ABC Family has greenlit two new comedy pilots, "Kevin From Work" and "Tough Cookie." It was announced today by Karey Burke, Executive Vice President, Programming and Development. Both pilots are single-camera and will go into production later this month. These orders join the second-season pick up of comedy series "Young & Hungry," announced in September. Comedy favorites "Melissa and Joey" and "Baby Daddy" will premiere their fourth seasons on January 14 at 8:00pm ET/PT and 8:30pm ET/PT, respectively.
"Single-camera comedies represent an evolution of our comedy brand, and we look forward to building a successful single-camera comedy franchise to match the success we're having with multi-cam comedies," said Burke.
"Kevin from Work" is a half-hour workplace comedy about a young man unluckily in love who professes his love to a co-worker, thinking he'll never see her again after he accepts a job offer overseas. But then that job offer is rescinded, and now they have to continue to work with each other. "Kevin from Work" is written, created and executive-produced by BARBIE Adler ("How I Met Your Mother," "My Name Is Earl," and "Arrested Development"). Aaron Kaplan at Kapital Entertainment ("Chasing Life," "The Mysteries of Laura," "The Neighbors" and "Terra Nova") and McG at Wonderland Sound & Vision ("Charlie's Angels," "The O.C.," "Supernatural," "Chuck," and "Nikita") will serve as Executive Producers. McG will also direct the pilot.
The half-hour comedy "Tough Cookie" is a fresh take on the friends-and-family convention. It's centered on a young mother who isn't ready to parent and her daughter who doesn't want to be parented. As everyone knows, it takes a village to raise a child, or rather a child to raise a village. "Tough Cookie" is written and created by Lauren Iungerich ("Awkward"), who will also serve as executive producer and direct the pilot. David Janollari ("Six Feet Under") is also executive producer.
ABC Family finished 2014 as the #1 cable TV network in Prime for the first time in the network's history in Women 18-34, achieved its highest annual rank on record in target Adult 18-34 and Viewer 12-34 demos, and December 2014 wrapped as the channel's biggest month of all time in Adults 18-49 and Women 18-49.

ReplyDeleteCan't say that the plots look very appealing, but you never know until you've seen a few episodes, if the casting's good and the jokes are good it can be watchable.

ReplyDeleteNothing of interest for me here but this might as well be the firing of the starter pistol for pilot season. I can't wait to see what people come up with this year... hopefully with a lot fewer reboots and adaptations.
ReplyDeleteABC is known for renewing shows early. They renewed every other show they have. I know it's getting renewed, I just don't know why it's taking them so long :)
