When I watched The Mentalist this week, the episode was nothing as I expected. I liked it, a lot, and it reminded me the old show during the Red John's arc. In The Silver Briefcase, Jane has a close encounter with a Colonel who leads me to think he's the killer behind his wife's murder case.
Some storylines continue in this episode. First, Jane and Lisbon discuss about their future beyond working at the FBI.
Lisbon's already stated that this job is who she is. She enjoys being a cop, she's an agent of the law, and nothing can change that. On the other hand, Jane's never intended to be a cop. He's grown up as a con man doing mental tricks to cheat people. Being a consultant for the CBI was like the only solution, because otherwise he hadn't nothing to do with his life.
One thing they're doing good is working together. As a couple. They really make a good team. Watching this episode meant watching The Jane and Lisbon's show. Watching him calling her "My girlfriend" was another proof how much their relationship is strong.
Special mention to Dennis Abbott, the man who believes in every Jane's theory and he hasn't afraid to listen to them. Even with both eyes close. Also, I can't wait to see the moment when Jane and Lisbon's relationship will be discovered and Abbott's obvious face.
Second reprised storyline was Cho & Vega's. Cho agreeded to be a good mentor for her showing how to use and prepare a weapon. Also Wylie had some great scenes. He's finally on the field, doing some undercover missions and what were those glances at Vega? Does he have a crush on her? Curious how she looked embarrassed when Jane pointed out that Wylie was glancing at her every now and then. Even the most toughest women can feel uncomfortable when a man shows interested - is someone thinking about Lisbon?
So who's the killer? Re-open a case closed can't always end well. Jane and Lisbon decide to investigate and dig into the Colonel's life but it turns out that the case closed will remain closed. Both the Colonel and his lover are accusing each other of killing the wife and none of their confessions seem to be the real truth. Did they both kill her? This got me thinking: was the wife an obstacle to the couple and their happy future? Did Red John was an obstacle too for Jane and his happiness with Lisbon? When Jane and Lisbon come back with the briefcase, we will never know who's the killer. What if Jane and Lisbon let the couple go without any punishment, just like Jane got away with Red John's murder? We'll never know, but like the lover said, "Better live a bad day or a lifetime of happiness?" And indeed Jane is happy for the first time since his wife died.
