CBS has picked up two more episodes of freshman comedy series The McCarthys for a total of 15. The multi-camera, multi-generational family comedy, from Sony Pictures TV and CBS TV Studios, has been struggling in the Thursday 9:30 PM slot, most recently logging a 1.1 on Thanksgiving. Still, CBS brass were encouraged enough by its lead-in retention (most recently 73%) to give it a little more time with a handful of extra episodes. Additionally, CBS’ needs on Thursday are not as great as most of the network’s lineup launched late because of Thursday Night Football. The back order for The McCarthys comes on the heels of CBS’ cancellation of its other multi-camera, multi-generational ensemble comedy, sophomore The Millers.

So that's that dead.
ReplyDelete"Quick Frank, we need filler episodes!!!"
ReplyDelete"But Dane, none of our shows have good numbers except NCIS! And we already invested too much into this for Scott Bakulas gumbo fund!"
"What show is bad enough to show the audience that we're still not too creative?"
"All of them..."
"Well...let's go for a horror show then"
"Perfect, we'll give the McCarthys 2 more episodes then"
"Is that even a horror show?"
"Well it certainly manages to make me pee myself and cry at the same time"
dead, not yet
ReplyDeletecheap, yes
I'm really surprised that CBS is keeping this around. I mean, TBBT repeats could get better ratings at this point.
ReplyDeleteCancel it already it needs to be over with and what do you think they will premiere after 2 and a 1/2 men.
ReplyDeleteThis is officially the most surprising TV season in terms of ratings, renewals, cancelations and back orders.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. While I am surprised by this because I cannot understand how it works scheduling wise, the back orders decisions almost always have to do with scheduling needs and spackles. They shouldn't be predicted using the same criterion used to predict renewals and cancellations, so with that logic, they cannot be that surprising IMO.
ReplyDeleteAs far as renewals and cancellations go, I don't think we have had that many surprises yet. I didn't expect the millers to be pulled so early (though I thought it should have been), but that's about it.
Yes, you are right about that. It's just that some of the back orders have surprised me because I never thought the show would be so succesful. Pre-season, I didn't think that The Mysteries of Laura or Madam Secretary would get a back-nine, let alone both (and I'm very happy MS got it!). I also thought Constantine would get higher ratings because it had everything going for it, but it's not doing much better than Dracula did.
ReplyDeleteAs for CBS scheduling, it would have made more sense if The McCarthys was canceled and replaced by The Odd Couple. Now it appears TOC will get the FWBL/Bad Teacher treatment premiering in late March/April.
I actually like this. Nut great but cute. And I love Laurie Metcalf! So I'm happy (tho surprised) about more.
