The Leftovers - Season 2 - Casting Changes and New Location

Dec 7, 2014

I have learned that a large portion of the fourteen regular cast members in Season 1 — virtually all in supporting roles — won’t be returning in Season 2 as the series is undergoing a creative reboot, moving the setting from the fictional town of Mapleton, New York to a new location.

I hear locked in to come back are most of the leads — star Justin Theroux, his onscreen family, estranged wife, played by Amy Brenneman, and children Margaret Qualley and Chris Zylka, as well as Carrie Coon, who plays Theroux’s love interest, and Christopher Eccleston, who portrays former reverand Matt Jamison.

  1. I´m glad to see the main cast is returning, but surpriced to hear that they are changing location. I have no idea were they will go (With the plot) in season 2. Loved the first season though, so I´m sure I will stick with it.

  2. Nooo.
I'm gonna miss Liv Tyler, Emily Meade and the Carvers. :(

  3. Liv Taylor will be in it still and Ann Dowd is likely to return.

  4. I hope Scott Glenn still makes his guest spots. Not liking the idea they burnt through their source material in season 1...

  5. If the twins leave though...

  6. Such a missing leading opening sentence there. The main players are all returning and they are what made the show interesting IMO.

  7. Uhmm... I loved the first season but I'm not so sure about this.
    EVERYONE moves? Really?

  8. The main cast is returning but we are going to see other people and how they dealt with the situation in differents towns? something like that?.

  9. Changing the location completely is somewhat a bold and unusual move!

  10. Not that big of a deal -- everyone getting dropped from regular was barely around or even developed at all. If they'll still recur, they're liable to have the same amount of screentime as they did in the first season.

But I wonder if this is a quiet way of saying the budget's been cut? Is the cast cuts and change in location truly a creative decision, or an executive one? Should be interesting to see how that plays out.

That said, I'm not sure if up and swapping the locale is suddenly going to make anything more interesting. We already have a decently established world. I'd hate to see several more episodes of exposition.

  11. Ha, this was really misleading, glad I read the whole article on Deadline.
