SpoilerTV's Best Shows Ever - As picked by the SpoilerTV Team

22 Dec 2014

Hey all,

Something that our annual Show Competition does really well is find the fan favourite show amongst those on the site. And while this is all well and good, the competition is, like every poll on the internet ever, a popularity contest. As such, we cannot use the results to determine quality. In light of this, I thought I'd pitch it to the SpoilerTV team to voice their opinions on what they thought were the best shows ever made.

Note: Nominations were restricted to two per person plus honourable mentions.

LOST

DarkUFO (1): Pretty much everything LOST got me hooked... the mystery, the acting, the locations, the soundtrack. They all just combined perfectly into something magical.

In addition to the above it sparked my interest in tracking the many of LOST mysteries, which in turned led me to start the site DarkUFO, and as a result when LOST ended, SpoilerTV.

So LOST holds a very special place in my heart.

I don't think any other show will ever have that impact or influence on me.

Robert Fruin (2): Lost’s element of storytelling is the greatest reason why this show was so amazing, how it was able to take so many characters and develop, and examine each and every one of them in depth. The uses of flashbacks to tell each characters story was perfectly integrated into each episode. Whenever the next episode would start it had me wondering each, and everytime which character the episode would focus on. Also its sense of mystery, once you seemed to figure out one of the shows many mysteries it took you further down a rabbit hole, it always kept me hooked in the hope that I would uncover anything about the island.

It never failed to keep me coming back to watch each week.

Bradley Adams (2): Choosing between LOST and Person of Interest was hard, but I had to go with LOST. All of the mind-bending mysteries it set up were great to watch, but what I loved is that eventually, I stopped caring about the minor things (the kind of things that people still say were unsolved) because the show became so much more about the character development, which was superb. There were so many characters that I loved - Daniel, Sawyer, even Ben (they managed to redeem Ben despite how much the character deserved hatred - that's brilliant) You always expected something to happen at any and every moment. LOST was a truly great show.

Breaking Bad

Bradley Adams (1): For me, Breaking Bad is the ultimate. The show to which no other show should ever be compared, because Breaking Bad will blow it out of the water every single time. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were magnificent in their roles. The character development was flawless, the story was always intense and brilliantly written. To this day, I'm still amazed that it was possible to root for Walter in spite of the despicable things he did. On any other show, this would be the guy that you are rooting against, but here, he was the main character. I think that's fantastic. Giancarlo Esposito's Gus Fring was a joy to watch, 'Ozymandias' was easily the best episode of television I've ever seen and unlike many other shows, the series finale was fantastic and things ended exactly as they should.

Also picked as an honourable mention by Laura Markus

The Walking Dead

Samy (1): I love many shows, but whenever I get asked about my favorite show of all time, ""The Walking Dead"" will always be the answer.
To me, it's really well written, there are NO love triangles (THANK GOD)
the actors are amazing and it's the only show that has ever made me cry!
The zombies are amazing and awesome CGI.
I love it that the writers are not afraid to kill off one of the main characters, several show just kill off a character that may have been here since the beginning but who's not that important.
I just don't know why I waited that long to start watching this show.

Also picked as an honourable mention by Gavin Hetherington

Game of Thrones

Samy (2): Actors are all very talented, the landscapes are amazing, every time I watch an episode I'm like ""mhm I wouldn't mind going there for my next vacation."" The CGI team is really amazing, the dragons.... oh my!

Also picked as an honourable mention by Pablozky

House M.D.

Laura Markus (1): This Fox show demonstrates how good Hugh Laurie is at concealing his native accent. House is a show that truly has it all - phenomenal acting, outstanding writing, wonderful cinematography, a great soundtrack, and plenty more. Each episode brings you a different medical mystery that House and his excellent team of doctors must diagnose. With gripping story arcs that keep you glued to your chair, House can truly force a wide array of emotions upon you. From watching the team intubate a dying patient, to hiding out in Cuddy's office, it's never a dull moment when you're watching this show. Despite the fact that some fans think that the show declined in quality post-season six, this is just up to interpretation. I believe that the show stayed true to itself up until the finale, and it was definitely one of the most satisfying finales for a show I have ever seen. There is no doubt in my mind that people with agree with me; after all, it won the Guinness World Record in 2012 for Most Watched TV Show and Hugh Laurie won Most Paid Actor. Well, you can't say it wasn't well deserved. In all honesty, "Everybody Lies" except for people who say they love this show.

Psych

Laura Markus (2): This is a terrible show - PSYCH! Did I fool you? Hopefully not, because it is impossible to make a joke like that about this show and actually mean it. Psych has some of the most creative writing I have ever experienced in my life. Each episode seems to be based on some pop culture reference of sorts, for example "Tuesday the 17th" and "Heeeeere's Lassie". No matter what episode you choose to watch, you're in for a wild ride with a psychic detective named Shawn Spencer, who isn't actually a psychic, but he does have an idea memory and crazy good skills of perception and deception. If that doesn't sell the show for you, I don't know what will. Maybe the fact that they change the theme song often to relate to the episode you're watching (Halloween, Christmas, Superhero, Bollywood etc.), the amazing soundtrack, the wonderful acting that can have you laughing your butt off one minute and then crying in a corner the next, or its humour will convince you. Steve Franks sought out to create a show that "just makes you feel good, no matter what episode you watch or when you watch it". This is definitely true - no matter how many seasons this show had, each season became better than the last. I wholeheartedly believe that a Psych Movie would be highly entertaining and it would have an amazing plot, much like every episode of the show had. Psych being my second nomination? "You know that's right."

Fringe

Pablozky (1): Innovating, inspiring and as a whole it explored human themes and deep emotions like no other sci-fi show I have ever seen. Amazing cast and great writers that kept improving the show as it went on and always made sure to tie every loose end up.

Pushing Daisies

Pablozky (2): Beautiful aesthetic, amazing comedy, outstanding cast and as a whole one of the most creative and unique comedy series ever created. A modern fairy tale that ended way sooner than it should have. Still, one of the best shows ever made.

Charmed

Gavin Hetherington (1): Charmed' was the first show I ever got obsessed with. I was young when I started watching it and I've always had a fascination with witches (I had been a fan of The Worst Witch and Sabrina the Teenage Witch) and to have a show where three kick-ass sisters vanquished demons and monsters week in and week out was incredible. The first few seasons were so magical and was filled with different kinds of bad guys and spells and potions. The later seasons kind of lost its touch and didn't feel as creative and magical as the Original years, but I still enjoyed the later seasons nonetheless. The show also has some truly standout episodes that remain part of my all-time favourite episodes of any show. Its series finale was near enough to perfection as it could have been and so ended an incredible 8 years on a very high note. The show is so rewatchable and I've probably seen every episode more times than I can count so I can see myself still watching odd episodes when I'm old and wrinkly.

Desperate Housewives

Gavin Hetherington (2): I was torn between this show and Buffy but I had to pick Desperate Housewives for the sheer fact that while Buffy was ground-breaking, it had some huge stinkers of episodes whereas Desperate Housewives never entered that territory. When Desperate Housewives did a season right, it was an incredible thing to watch and quality was pretty consistant. Rarely did the show produce any outright bad episodes and I can't really think of any off the top of my head. Desperate Housewives opened with a fantastic episode, one of my all-time favourite Pilots, and continued that quality through its first season. Season 2 was still very enjoyable (especially when rewatching without breaks), and Seasons 3 and 4 are among my favourite TV show seasons of all-time. Seasons 5 and 7 were entertaining though not great, and Season 6 wasn't that enjoyable to me, but Season 8 returned the show to a good place. I'll miss the characters - Susan, Gabby, Bree, Lynette and Edie - as they are some of the best female characters to ever grace television. The writing was phenomenal when it wanted to be and the show had some amazing big episodes, including the supermarket hostage and the tornado. Desperate Housewives just oozed juicy drama.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Christopher DeBono (1): One of my favorite Science Fiction shows. The characters were absolutely amazing and the lasting impact of the many cliffhangers are still burnt in my memory today.

Queer As Folk

Christopher DeBono (2): No other LGBT show has really pushed the barrier further then Queer As Folk did when it first aired. Due to its frank portrayal of various aspects of the LGBT community, it really led for some memorable and heart-wrenching moments that I'll never forget.

The X-Files

DarkUFO (2): Being a part time UFO researcher at an early age I came to love this show as it covered many of the aspects of the UFO lore and brought to life many of the real-live UFO stories.

Still one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. Only beaten by LOST.

Sons Of Anarchy

Robert Fruin (1): The show itself is a big cliff hanger. Every episode ends with that montage of music and characters that makes you desperately want to watch the next episode. Combine that with the fact that there are so many different storylines going on at once makes the entertainment endless. The writing for the show is phenomenal, and the acting is even better, especially season 7.

Sons of Anarchy will never be replicated, it was good to the very end.

Various other honourable mentions: American Horror Story (Samy); Dexter, Criminal Minds, The Listener, Boy Meets World, Arrested Development (Laura Markus); Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Grey's Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, Revenge, Scandal, True Blood, Witches of East End (Gavin Hetherington); Friends (Gavin Hetherington and Bradley Adams); Supernatural (Christopher DeBono); Fawlty Towers (DarkUFO and Bradley Adams); Person of Interest (Robert Fruin and Bradley Adams); 24 (Bradley Adams).

    No battlestar galactica?

  4. These are all great choices. Mine would be Supernatural and Buffy. Both took my love of TV and the paranormal to another level, but in different ways. As of now, Dean and Buffy are my favorite male and female characters of all time.
HM- The X-Files, ER, Lost and early SOA. It's hard to choose the best ever when they may have had seasons as the best show ever, only to implode later. Does the implosion take away the brilliance that was? I guess that's a matter of opinion.

  5. I really wanted to pick Buffy but I could only pick 2 shows as my favourite with honourable mentions. Buffy is in my top 3.

  6. My top shows are Mad Men, Parks and Recreation and Freaks and Geeks.

Honorable mentions: Sons of Anarchy, V, True Detective, Weeds

I almost did, but I felt Star Trek: TNG edged it out.

  11. My two all time favorite dramas are X-files and House!!!

  12. From the shows up there I only watched Charmed and Desperate Housewives which I loved! My favourite show though is Stargate Universe, and I can't pick a second one there are just too many!

  13. My top three would consist without a doubt:!- Borgia (Tom Fontana's) 2- Peaky Blinders 3- Game of Thrones. I enjoyed Maison Close too yet was quite disappointed with the haphazard finale plot , thought did no justice for the diligence shown on all aspects of the show until the the ending as it did injustice to Rose who portrayed a smart girl until then suddenly handing Mosca on silver platter to his executor where so many other ways were availableto to have a thrilling finale without sacrificing him and her future

  14. Great choices! Mine would be The Wire and Lost.
Honourable mentions: Breaking Bad and Fringe and PoI.

  15. Fringe, Charmed, and The Walking Dead are the only ones on the list I've watched.

I think from those I loved Fringe the most, though Charmed was the very first show I was a fan of. Fringe was special, thought-proking, and though the switching of universes after the first couple seasons bothered me, the leads all remembering it in the final season (finally Walter remembered!) fixed that for me.

For me, TWD is back and forth. Sometimes it's really interesting and/or exciting, other times terribly boring.

Buffy and Angel I haven't watched in such a long time I can't judge on how good they were anymore.

Supernatural's first 2 seasons were mostly golden for me. After that I wouldn't consider it a best show ever even if my favorite seasons were season 4 and 5.

I have many shows I love I wouldn't label best show ever. I'm putting in thought for quality and so forth not just my heart.

But there is another show that I love with great quality:

    Person of Interest!

This show has never been disappointing, though I haven't always agreed on some turns of events after season 2 (I loved the first 2 seasons best). You can tell the writers have really thought this out because it's so complex and if there are plot holes, I can't find it! The same can't be said for several other shows I watch (looking at Supernatural here especially).

  16. Great choice picking Freaks and Geeks. The best show to only get 1 season.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sons of Anarchy and LOST. Every season SoA was a top 5 show for me and LOST was the show that got me into watching TV. I didn't get hooked right away I saw a season 3 episode the first Desmond episode of that season and thought this is the greatest show I've ever seen and the next day I bought season 1 and watched it in 5 days then watched season 2 in about 4.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Freaks and Geeks was great while it lasted

    ReplyDelete
  19. Lets not forget theme songs. Some theme songs helped me get into the show. Charmed's theme song was especially awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Some great shows on those lists, and some that would not make my top 100 if I'm honest! XD
That's what is so fun about TV, there is something for everyone...

My list would consist of Breaking Bad, LOST, Game of Thrones and I would add one I did not see above in anyone's list... The Wire!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I loved the original version (The Smiths - How Soon is Now?) of the song Charmed used for their show, but always had issues with how they misinterpreted the lyrics....

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ah one .. and ah two...

    ReplyDelete
  23. For me-Breaking Bad,LOST,Smallville,GoT,FRIENDS,Desperate housewives & Grey's Anatomy!
No other shows will be as close to my heart as these are!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Psych, House & Fringe more or less validates this list for me.
I expect shows like BB, Lost & GoT to be on there.... but these are 3 shows I don't hear mentioned nearly enough on "best of" lists that deserve their place.

    ReplyDelete
  25. For me, in order are: TVD, OUAT, Charmed, Buffy and Friends. There are more but those are the ones I really really really really love and always love.

    ReplyDelete
  26. My favourite shows ever are House M.D., Mad Men, Sons Of Anarchy, The Wire, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Six Feet Under, Oz, The Shield, Friday Night Lights, Buffy, Boardwalk Empire Supernatural (the first five seasons), etc, etc...

  27. For me the best shows are: Game of thrones, Revenge, once upon a time, the good wife, Scandal

Game of thrones: the acting is amazing and the locations and excellent visual effects make this show so excellent

Revenge: not a show with much quality but the best guilty pleasure ever. The mystery, the thriller part of the show, the wardrobe and Emily's fighting scenes

OUAT: the whole theme of the show is so good, the introduction of so many characters, the darkness of the show

The good wife: perfect writing, serious drama and excellent court cases but also moments that make me laugh or giggle

Scandal: the intense dialogue, the good acting, what i like abour scandal is how exciting it is and the moments where you can hardly move because it is so intense

  28. I think my cat just flagged you, can't seem to keep her off the keyboard! If she did i'm sorry!

    ReplyDelete
  29. For me the best are: LOST, Fringe, Game of Thrones, the X-Files and Band of Brothers. I go back to these shows time and time again,as a matter of fact i have so many shows on my dvr but i just started another re-watch of Fringe! Just can't beat the writing, the acting, the storyline with these shows!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Mine too :). No show has had as much impact on my life as Fringe and I don't think any other will ever have. I've seen shows that are coming together as good as Fringe (GoT, The 100, for instance), but they are nowhere near as important to me as Fringe, because that show is the first time I felt there was an ongoing conversation between fans and writers, and as such Fringe felt like something beautiful coming from that conversation. Truly outstanding show, great acting, brilliantly writen, groundbreaking and very caring of its fans. I can't think of something better

    ReplyDelete
  31. Friends is timeless, it's the one comedy I can watch and laugh no matter how many times I watch the rerun. HIMYM almost reached Friends heights but it fell on the finale; still, I have been able to forgive it and watch almost any HIMYM episode at any time. Those are probably the two best comedies I've ever watched

    ReplyDelete
  32. To those that haven't watched the shows listed above I invite you to check them out, you are guaranteed a great time :).

I myself have to watch Breaking Bad, but I'll get to that

    ReplyDelete
  33. Breaking Bad and The Good Wife. I picked these two because they are on that rare list of shows > 4 seasons long that have been excellent throughout the entire series. Game of Thrones will probably join that list. The Mentalist, Haven, Merlin, The Listener, Dawson's Creek and The Big Bang Theory get honorable mention. There are a lot of other shows that I currently love (like Arrow, The Americans, Flash, Sleepy Hollow, Grimm, HTGAWM, OUAT, etc, but I'm waiting to see how they pan out)

I always have a hard time rating shows that have ended, or have been around for a long time, because even my favorite shows are rarely consistent.. Most start to lose steam after the 4th or 5th season, or they end badly I agree that LOST was one of the best shows, but the ending was a let down, that tainted the show for me.. Similarly, Alias was terrific for the first 3 seasons, but afterwards, it was just OK. Same goes for Damages and Prison Break. Homeland had the best first two seasons of all shows, but I haven't been able to get into this recent season. . Dexter....great show, terrible ending. Then there were shows like Dark Angel and Pushing Daisies that were perfect for the time that they lasted, but were prematurely ended, so it's hard to compare them fairly to shows that lasted for 5 or more years.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I so wanted to pick POI. But I just couldn't bring myself to pick it over LOST.

    ReplyDelete
  35. That would be a totally different article that I could write heaps about. Theme songs/title sequences are a big factor in my liking of a show.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I was slightly surprised no one put The Wire. But then maybe everyone who submitted hasn't watched it - I know I haven't.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I still stand by that LOST's finale was superb, but to each their own. Prison Break, for me, should have ended after season 2. Seasons 3 and 4 were repetitive, unnecessary and at times boring.

Homeland this season has been superb. It took until the end of the sixth episode to really get going, but it has been worth the wait.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'll give Homeland another tyr, only because the first three seasons were so good. Too bad I can't just skip the first 5 episodes.......

    ReplyDelete
  39. Always really hard for me to decide on my all time favourites, but these 10 are definitely in there just the order changes

Breaking Bad - Overall the best in quality
Lost But probably my favourite show in terms of enjoyment
Fringe - Sci-fi plus making me cry is always a winner
Buffy - My first real TV love
Six Feet Under - Also has one of the best finales
The Wire - Such a quality show
BSG - Oh how I wish we had space shows as great as this
Parks and Recreation - Favourite comedy of all time
Justified - Perfect dialogue, perfect characters
The Shield - Cime drama at its best

    ReplyDelete
  40. lol Star Trek TNG? I loved the old Star Trek series. The one that started it all. I rewatched that so many times and bought all the books. I was a Trekkie!

I also loved X-Files. never missed an episode.

Currently, The Blacklist is my favourite.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think this year of Homeland has been the best yet..
Personally I have always thought Homeland was a bit overrated... Season 1 had great performances, but at times I felt that they wrote to shock or for suspense first and it did not feel organic to me. Especially the final episodes of the season. The next years each went down a peg or two in my opinion...

However, this year everything has built from the premiere on in a very organic way. Every character has been developed nicely and all the story lines seem natural to me unlike past seasons where it felt forced to me at times.

  42. Nice article @Bradley Adams @DarkUFO. Many great shows on this list.

Also, I'm curious if this tagging thing that I tried to do above works or not. And don't worry, I'm not planning to bombard you with tags if it does work :).

    ReplyDelete
  43. Nope, it didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Huh. That's strange, maybe the feature is defunct or something. Thanks though

    ReplyDelete
  45. No 24!! I know it lost its way a little in later seasons but for a least the first five seasons (season 5 being the absolute pinnacle) it was mindblowing and thrilling television. Innovative with its real time and split screen format. Never afraid to be controversial. Name one other show that had the audacity to kill off a major leading character in the first couple of minutes of a season premiere episode.

  50. It's not currently. My list is long enough right now anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I put it as an honourable mention, but I couldn't pick it over LOST as my number 2 (or Person of Interest for number 3). It's my favourite show of all time, and I've watched it so many times - by my rough calculations, I've spent well over 800 hours of my life watching it - but the 'final' three seasons (6 and 7 in particular for me) hurt it. It's still an excellent show (season 5 still wows me to this day, and I've watched it the full way through more times than I can count), but for me, Breaking Bad, LOST and Person of Interest top it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Aw, shucks. That's nice of you to say. Happy Holidays, Laura!

    ReplyDelete
  54. How about Hee Haw?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Okay, but only pre-1990 Grand ol' Opry.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I am just starting ER, so it might have made my list.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I haven't started Mad Men yet, but it probably would've made my list.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I really want to start The Shield soon. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Thank you Bruce. Happy Holidays to you too!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hmm i would rate 24 higher than poi or lost, though x-files would be my number 1. Absolutley agree that season 5 was the height of 24. Still amazing no matter many times you watch it. I would say it is probably the best all round season of any tv show i have ever seen. It was just relentless from start to finish. Every shocking twist, every major death it was a sucker punch every episode. Deservedly cleaned up at the emmys that year.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Much as i enjoyed fringe it borrowed ALOT from the x-files which for me is the god father if sci fi shows. Often mimicked but never bettered

    ReplyDelete
  68. I loved The West Wing. Those lightning quick dialogues were the best I've ever heard. Nothing since has come close.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I can't see why it's not for everyone, but I'm a sucker from period dramas. Also I have always been intrigued by the 60s. Totally recommend the show.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Yeah. That one is also pretty good. You can't help but sing along

    ReplyDelete
  71. I'm a pickin'..and I'm a grinnin'! Hey Grandpa, what's for dinner? Rindercella slopped her dripper. If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.

Just tell me when to stop.

    ReplyDelete
  72. "Fringe", BtVS, "Lost", "The X-Files", "Breaking Bad", TWD. All great choices, but seriously, "Queer as Folk", "Charmed", "House", "Desperate Housewives", but no "Alias"? What the.....?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Oh, Bobby and Sissy, where are you when we need you?

    ReplyDelete
  74. This season of "Homeland" has been excellent. Ditching Brody and his family has cleared the way for this show to move forward. But, jeez, wouldn't a little Virgil go a long way right about now? C'mon, how 'bout some Virgil?

    ReplyDelete
  75. So true!
This year has been interesting in how they scaled back the cast and focus on each character more.

The season the characters and and the stories have almost a more solitary feeling to them. The characters interact of course, but each seems to isolate themselves as they deal with the events around them. It's lead to a lot of great dramatic moments I think. .

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'll start Battlestar Galactica and The Sopranos very soon. We're even :-)

    ReplyDelete
  77. It really is amazing plus if you watch other FX dramas its like spot the actor, everyone from Justified and Sons of Anarchy seem to be in it!

    ReplyDelete
  78. My favorite TV shows ever are Twin Peaks, X-Files, Lost, Fringe, Buffy, GoT, House, Breaking Bad, Justified, Friends, The Killing. I simply love everything about these shows!

    ReplyDelete
  79. like your taste. GoT, Twin Peaks, Lost, Justified, Breaking Bad and Friends is also on my list. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Forgot to participate in this. Number 1 best show for me is LOST, which is great on so many levels. No 2 is difficult to say. I haven't finished Breaking Bad yet so perhaps that gets to be on my list as well.

  81. There are so many great shows I enjoyed and I fall in love with and outta love and back in love with.
I couldn't even choose! As I grew up my taste in cheesy shows evolved as well.
But most likely Grey's Anatomy is my personal Number 1 along Charmed.

  82. Gotta go with The Walking Dead, GOT, Lost and the X-Files all redefined the medium in various ways

  83. Thanks, like your dark and creepy taste too! :D
I'm surprised you didn't mention X-Files or Fringe. So what else in your top ten, pal?

  84. :-) I like both Fringe and the X-Files, but they are not on my top ten.
I would add Banshee (at the very top), Vikings and The Walking Dead. Dark and twisted works best for me.

  85. I know LOST's ending is polarizing, with some people going as far as saying that it undo every good thing LOST has built up over 6 years. However, LOST will always have a special place in my heart. It is still the primary reason why I got into US TV in the first place, as a non-US person, because it is a such a breath of fresh air compared to the programming in my country and those surrounding. I'm not sure I would still be watching US TV if the first US show I tried hadn't been LOST.

  86. I haven't started Alias yet, so it might have made my list.

I like the walking dead but it's been so inconsistent through the seasons that I can't believe someone would put it as his no.1 show. Don't get me wrong I like that show but putting it in front of great shows like breaking bad, game of thrones, the sopranos or the wire is ridiculous
