Hiatus is here again and with it comes the hiatus blues. You turn on your TV only to find nothing new is playing. What's a hapless TV fan to do? Why find other great shows of course. (Like they used to say in NBC's heyday: if you haven't seen it, it's new to you.) There's no one better than the SpoilerTV community to help you find some TV gems you might have missed, so I hereby open nominations for the Second Annual Pitch Your Show article. For those new to this concept, basically you pick a show that you think other people should start watching and then pitch that show to them. Tell them what makes your show special, why you love it, and most importantly why you think others should try it out. It's a great way to get new people to discover your show. The more specific you are, the more likely it is that someone will try it out.
Last year we had over 300 people respond and we focused specifically on shows whose Nielsen ratings put them in jeopardy for cancellation. Priority will still be given to these shows, but feel free to spotlight any show you don't think gets enough recognition. It will not change any show's ratings but you can feel good knowing you have helped others find great hiatus fare. Nominations will stay open until December 29th and then I will put the best pitches into an article for the New Year. I will include a link to all responses as well. Hopefully we can all find new shows to fight off those hiatus blues.
Rules:
1. The show must be currently on the air or returning in the 2014-2015 TV season. No cancelled shows please no matter how much you want The Secret Circle and Firefly to return.
2. Only scripted shows. No reality TV.
3. The show does not have to be in danger of cancellation but priority will be given to those which are.
4. The purpose is to persuade others to watch your show. Saying "IT'S THE BEST SHOW EVER!!!" over and over again won't help. In fact, triple exclamations and having all letters capitalized will probably work against you. Same goes for hashtags. Instead focus on why someone who doesn't watch the show should take their precious time to try it. Enthusiasm is only good when backed by details and thoughtful discourse.
5. This is not a popularity contest so there is no need to nominate a show multiple times with the same comment. I will take the most thoughtful comments for each show nominated so as long as the show fits the first 4 rules, it will be in the article.
Last Year's Results
One of my favorite thing about the SpoilerTV community is that it keeps me full of great TV to watch. As we come into the hiatus, I know others are looking for good shows too. So what shows do you think should be getting far more recognition than they are. For me, The 100 is the most underrated but there are several others I plan to nominate too.
ReplyDeleteYou haven't steered me wrong on shows so far so whatever you nominate, I'll probably get right to it. I'm already missing Scorpion and I watched it all in a day and a half. Mercy.
ReplyDeleteSpoiler tv, you are just awesome. The fact that you guys even give us the possibility to promote a show is great i have tried it on sooo many sites, yet the only site it seems to be working is here. Great job, really! I submitted Revenge. It could really need some more viewers. It is such a great show, that has Made me cry, scream and Made my heart pound. Everything in one and when it ends i will cry because i felt so close to the Main character and really even care about her.
ReplyDeleteOne of the most underrated shows on TV has to be The Middle.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that The Middle even can be considered because it gets good ratings. But it is SO underrated. I wouldn't mind if Modern Family wasn't so popular, but since it is I think Middle deserves its recognition
ReplyDeleteI submitted The 100! I really hope it gets chosen!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you tried Scorpion. That episode last week was one of the most entertaining ones I've watched all year.
ReplyDeleteSometimes fans get a bad rap for being overly enthusiastic about a show. I actually did this last year as a place for Beauty and the Beast fans to safely communicate why they loved their show so much without getting hate for it. To my surprise several shows were nominated and it was great fun to read about shows I hadn't seen. I even added several to my to-watch list because people did such a great job of explaining why their shows were awesome.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how it can be on the air for so long with a steady audience and still most people don't think of it when they talk about comedies.
ReplyDeleteYou can nominate any show you want. I just tend to spotlight those with struggling ratings more (meaning they get more responses in the article). I would however love to throw some recognition towards The Middle as well, so please do.
ReplyDeleteI expect this year for The 100 to be the most nominated show. It helps that it is having an amazing season. I strongly recommend it to anyone.
ReplyDeleteEven on another ratings website there would be a headline and The Middle would never be in it. I think even that night when all ABC comedies rose it only mentioned Modern Family and The Goldbergs. A little irrelevant, but still
ReplyDeleteI already cast my ballot for a low-rated show though. I wish I knew of this site last year, I would have had so much to say about Trophy Wife
ReplyDeleteI nominated Jane the virgin. I am sure a lot of people are thrown off by the title. I know I was originally. Then I clicked on the trailer and I saw something good there. Because of that I watched the first episode and instantly fell in love. Now I have an iTunes season pass. The only other show I have that with his Agents of Shield.
ReplyDeleteI submit Reign. It's an amazing show not only because of the actors but the story line in amazing. It's one of those shows that pulls you in and doesn't let go. I feel this show doesn't get the credit it deserves and I fear it won't be on much longer and it really is disappointing that I find a show I tune into every week without fail and there are some people that don't see the beauty in it like I do. I hope they don't cancel it... I really do enjoy it and I love the characters they've created.
ReplyDeleteYou can nominate however many shows you want so feel free. 3 people nominated Trophy Wife last year. You can see them here: http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/11/fighting-hiatus-blues-pitch-your-show.html
ReplyDeleteIf you are talking about TV by the Numbers, I think it is because they are in the middle of the ratings pack (sorry about the pun) that they don't get a lot of acknowledgment for their accomplishments. TVbtN tends to spotlight shows that get website hits.
ReplyDeleteJtV is definitely unfortunately named. It is also unlike anything else on network TV so I don't think people knew what to expect. I'm glad you nominated it because it has been overlooked.
ReplyDeleteTVBTN just mentions the shows that are Googled a lot so they can get the clicks, which they seem to be obsessed about.
ReplyDeleteReign is another show that suffers because it is on the CW and it is unlike anything else in its lineup. I actually did not think it would do as well as it did last year because I couldn't see a historical drama piece working on the CW. Good choice to nominate.
ReplyDeleteAs you told me, this site has so much better people to communicate with.
ReplyDeleteThey promote the shows that bring them the most hits, which from a business point of view makes sense. Sadly it also leads to a lot of nasty fan wars in the comments too. If it's in a fan war, it's in the title of an article pretty quickly.
ReplyDeleteThat actually makes a lot of sense now—thanks. Yes, I was talking about them, just was tentative of bringing up the website's name, you know?
ReplyDeleteThat is my favorite thing about SpoilerTV. People feel like they can discuss their opinions without being reamed for it and it generally stays respectful and on topic here. It's a refreshing change from many of the sites that I went to before learning about STV over four years ago. There's no other site like it online, thanks to Andy, who keeps things civil.
ReplyDeleteI voted for Reign. I believe it's a great show that is honestly placed in the worst time slot this year. Being up against Scandal I think is hurting it. But the cast chemistry is amazing and the plot just keeps getting better.
ReplyDeleteI tried not to make my submission too long but there's just so much to be said about this show! Lol I'm glad it is starting to get more recognition though!
ReplyDeleteI just wrote/sent a wall of text regarding Person of Interest - it's not exactly in immediate danger, but ratings have been declining and this is a great opportunity to explain my favorite show on the air. :)
ReplyDeleteI think Rectify is one of the most underrated show on tv. Great cast, good writing but low ratings :(
ReplyDeleteI submitted the 100 which is my latest discovery. Lately, I've been looking for a good show because all my favourite ones are on "winter break". I was hoping to watch it during the holidays but I watched the 2 available seasons in two days. I just found out it doesn't have good ratings and I have to say i'm disapointed because the actors are really good and the storyline is amazing If you like fiction, sci-fi or futuristic kind of shows, you should like it. But in case you don't, do not scratch it from your list yet because it has everything a good show needs: action, romance, drama and suspense. I would really recommend it.
ReplyDeletei agree, people on this site are much easier to reason with. i like that on this site no matter how much people disagree with each other they still manage to have a friendly discussion about without any criticism.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I've been fortunate to have good discussion here so far :). People who are enthusiastic about shows aren't mocked for being "Pollyannas", and those who critique a show's faults actually bring proper arguments for why they don't like this or that about the show, beyond just, "It sucks and I don't like it, so you shouldn't, either!" It's really refreshing to see that. And if conversations do ever get a bit heated, people usually wind up apologizing, and get another chance to explain their views.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great idea for a thread. I can't think of any shows I would suggest to share here at the moment, but I look forward to reading what shows other people think are deserving of attention-and like you, maybe I'll find a new show amongst the lists here that might interest me in the process. I hope that all the shows people are praising here will get more attention and success as time goes on, too :). Sometimes it just takes a series a while to find its footing.
I have heard nothing but good things about this show from those who've mentioned it, especially in regards to how relatable it is, sort of the way people could relate to the family on "Roseanne". I keep meaning to check it out-I know they show reruns on some channel on TV here. Next time I have the chance, I'll definitely take a look at that show.
ReplyDeleteThe 100 is definitely getting my nomination. So many reason's why, I can't list them all. Suffice to say, if you're not watching it, you are missing out on incredible network TV. They get away with things on here that I've only seen on cable. Thank Mark Pedowitz for giving them a lot of leeway.
ReplyDeleteDahne, Thanks for the poll always helpful for the hiatus blues, for my submission, I'm pitching Constantine, a show that I'd thought I'd never watch it's not usually my cup of tea, but after two episodes I was all in I'm not familiar with the comics, it's based on but the special effects are amazing, week after week I'm on the edge of my seat, holding my breath till that hr is up, I highly recommend this show for great escapeism, with a stellar cast that's sure to entertain!!
ReplyDeleteI saw the pilot over the summer and was very disappionted with it but I decided to watch a couple more episodes to see if it got any better and it definitely did. After episode three, the episodes have been getting better and better and it has become one of my favorite new shows.
ReplyDeleteYay, Thank you that's what I'm talking about, I'm right there with you:)
ReplyDeleteI submitted About a Boy. It is definitely seeing a sophomore slump in the ratings as last season it was artificially inflated by The Voice but quality wise it is as strong as ever. I have never seen a more heart-warming and genuine show than this. The cast is amazing and it never fails to make me laugh. The show has a really big heart and I hope it survives for a third season.
ReplyDeleteI watch a lot of shows and many of them do not have the ratings and attention they deserve but I had to pick The Leftovers over all the others it's just so brilliant that I can't believe it hasn't got a bigger fanbase, though I do understand the low ratings because it's that special of a show, I just think a lot more people deserve to enjoy it anyways.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree, the subjects they take on as a show make it so much better that you'd think from some of the CW's previous choices of publicity, I think they messed up by not being sure from the begining which kind of viewer they wanted to target.
ReplyDeleteGlad spoiler got you Dahne as you are one of the few writers who hate on BATB and it's fans, but you did say recently that CW was made a laughing stock with renewal of BATB. To be fair Dahne that comment was unnecessary when you knew the show, actors and fans deserved it, as did the other shows. You guys have lost many BATB fans but some have stayed. What happened here with Spoiler moderators and writers was uncall for and don't blame all the fans as the moderators and writers here made made a lot of BATB hate continue and this is widely known. So as for voting I will not be voting or ever will here as we well recognize and know The CW don't make their decision to renew shows based on any input from Spoiler TV...thank God...lol
ReplyDeleteI have always defended BatB fans' right to be enthusiastic about their show even though I do not care for it myself so no I do not "hate on BatB and its fans" as you claim. I know what it is like to love a show that has poor ratings, but I also know that TV is a business and no show ever "deserves" to be renewed unless it makes money. That is just business. Quality shows get cancelled all the time as do poor ones. The same thing happens on the renewal side. It's no different than a business deciding to shut down a product line that isn't performing at expectations. New episodes of BatB got down to a 0.2 in ratings and frequently scored a 0.3, lower than some repeats of other shows. No matter how you slice it, that does not "deserve" to be renewed by typical TV standards. Obviously the CW looked at other factors so while I am happy for you that your show was renewed, it doesn't make it any less strange that it was.
ReplyDeleteWhen I talk about ratings, I am commenting on the business of TV, not the quality of it which of course differs largely in the eyes of the beholder. So yes, renewing a show with ratings as low as BatB's did nothing for the CW's standings in the TV world. The CW is just now turning things around from the disastrous Ostroff years and are about to pitch renewal to the affiliates. They have to show the affiliates a reason to renew the entire network and that won't happen by renewing low rated shows. As it is, in many markets the reruns airing before and after CW shows actually do better in the ratings. You cannot keep a network going like that.
As for BatB fans and SpoilerTV, I was the first to call out people for bad behavior on both sides. It was unworthy of STV and I said that. However both sides are to blame because people got obnoxious on both sides. I am sorry that you are no longer comfortable going here. That should not happen. To be honest, when I first started at STV I actually got nasty hate mail through my Twitter feed for defending Supernatural in one of the contests. It happens sometimes and it is unfortunate. However it happens much more rarely here. I am sorry it happened to you and I completely understand you feeling like you needed to move on and not participate here.
And no, nothing we do here in these nominations, polls, or articles will change the fate of any show. It's not designed to do so. It's just a way to share the love of your favorite shows with others and hopefully give people ideas for other shows to check out. In fact the entire thing started because of BatB fans as a forum for them to expouse all their love for the show. Nine people so far this year have nominated BatB as their pick and I am confident more will as well. In the end, I wish you, your fandom, and your show the best.
The very first year I was on SpoilerTV, Winston was adamant that I try Veronica Mars. I did and I was pleasantly surprised by just how good it was. Since then, I have gone to the STV community whenever I am looking for a new show. Since there is such variety in the community, you can always find someone with similar tastes. I hope you find something to enjoy out of the nominations as well. I've already seen a show nominated that I know nothing about so I'm interested in finding out more about it.
ReplyDeleteI like how people can discuss period. On other sites it is sometimes more of a fight than it is a discussion or it is just cheerleading and no criticisms can be made. There is more balance here.
ReplyDeleteHa! Feel free to be as long as you want. I can never be concise about anything, especially that which I love. I like when people write paragraphs about why a show is so good because it helps me to determine if it is something I would be interested in better.
ReplyDeleteThe CW does seem to make that mistake a lot. I remember arguing that Star-Crossed was not just a lame love story, but acutally a good political and sociocultural drama. Sadly the CW media team never made that known and I am convinced that the marketing turned people off before they ever saw it.
ReplyDeleteReign and The 100 are the most nominated shows right now so you are in good company. I've heard goods things about it from my podcasting partner.
ReplyDeleteThanks for participating. I'm glad you chose Person of Interest. Any show can be included no matter the ratings. Actually PoI is on my list of shows to catch up on over the hiatus.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first show nominated that I don't know much about so thanks for sharing it. I look forward to learning more about it.
ReplyDeleteThe 100 was one of the biggest surprises for me last year. I didn't think the CW would go that dark but they are fearless on that show. It makes for highly engrossing TV.
ReplyDeleteI honestly think that if The 100 were on a different network and had tweaked the pilot a little bit more, it would not be in the ratings mess it is in. It doesn't fit people's preconceived notions of a CW show at all. Of course very few CW shows fit that notion now that Pedowitz is in charge - thank goodness.
ReplyDeleteFrom the huge number of shows i've watched this year,The 100 gets my nomination.Reason-Inspite of being a CW teen show,it avoids all the genre cliche like plaque. No love triangle melodrama, plot twists which are both logical & not done for only shock value purpose unlike some shows & unpredicable, neither are they afraid to kill off main characters like GoT which is a rarity now-a-days in broadcast television. The narrative and the pacing of the show is very intriguing & the outdoor locations gives this show a fresh perpective & adventurous vibe.If someone has time to kill, this show should be their ideal show to catch up on.Trust me,you won't regret it a bit.
ReplyDeleteThanks for participating. I love hearing what people think about other shows so this makes for a nice way to fill the time before my regular shows come back. I hope you find some shows you like too.
ReplyDeleteI have always meant to check this show out but never had the time. Thanks for reminding me of it. I'm a sucker for comedies that combine laughs and heart.
ReplyDeleteThanks for adding your nomination. I'm glad the Leftovers got renewed for you. It is definitely not your typical show and being on pay cable may have kept some people from sampling it. HBO is good at letting shows breathe for a bit so they can find their footing.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. What I enjoy most about The 100 is that it rarely feels like they are doing something purely for shock value. Even the most shocking things have a purpose in the larger storytelling and you can't get too comfortable because you never know what is coming next.
ReplyDeleteNielsen ratings? The Cancel Bear? Most people are very aware of the inaccuracies and old fashioned system data that come from Nielsen. Spoiler based its rating information from The C Bear and Nielsen and since been told how inaccurate they are. As for the business of TV, Money, money and more money is what translates to business for The CW, or any network. BATB is making smart money worldwide for the CW and if you don't have money to run your network you don't have a network for anyone or their individual show favorites. If we listene or read what Mark Pedowich recently said about his CW network then we understand how the business of TV actually work. Do you, or anyone actually think shows that are not making money/ ratings for the network will continue to air? How could a network survive if this is how networks work , it just couldn't.
ReplyDeleteReign and The 100 easily. They are both amazing and deserves better ratings than other CW shows.
ReplyDeleteBut i voted fr Reign :
- Adelaide Kane
- Whole cast
- Love Triangle is not in the centre of attention since Episode 12 of Season 1
- Very mature for CW standards
- Beautiful Background (Castle, Nature, Costumes ...)
- Involves topics that are now very usual for CW (religion (catholics vs protestants, rape (i agree it is one of the most disgusting things that could ever happen to anyone, but i feel like they managed to portray it great, Adelaide showed how amazing she is and how strong the character of Mary really is)
- Relationships are not only about love, they have to think about their Nations too and it makes it even more interesting
Great idea! I hate the hiatus and I need something new to watch!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad somebody else is giving The Leftovers some love! Every episode was hauntingly beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad somebody else is giving The Leftovers some love. Every episode was hauntingly beautiful. There is nothing else like it on TV.
ReplyDeleteWhat Type of shows do you like? Or are you Open for everything
ReplyDeleteI am happy that you have joined us :) we can talk about revenge on any Post without being attacked. So great :)
ReplyDeleteNielsen ratings are what is used, no matter how outdated they are. So little money is made from international broadcast compared to what gets made from US advertisers, and the prices they pay are set because of the ratings, that in almost every single case ever (seemingly BatB is an exception), a show's international standing has no effect on the status of the show.
ReplyDeleteRevenge, Reign, The 100.
ReplyDeleteI submitted The Mindy Project
ReplyDeleteExactly. When they think of Comedies people tend to think The Big Bang Theory or Modern Family, hardly anyone really notices The Middle which has been on air just as long.
ReplyDeleteQuite a lot of our team members love The Middle as well, I don't think I have ever seen a hate comment towards the show which is really good! If your from the UK it is Sky One, America is ABC.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite TV critics suggested that I watch this but she told me it would remind me of the most nostalgic and sad moments of Friday Night Lights. The same undertones. That made me a little wary because I loved FNL but that show could rip out your heart. I still get a melancholy feeling when I hear the theme song. I do want to try it.
ReplyDeleteI submitted Stalker. As you can see from the lack of comments here, I think it was well deserved.
ReplyDeleteAnd as I said above, BatB is the exception to the fact that international standings have virtually no effect on a show's status.
ReplyDeleteIf canceled show were allowed, I would have pick Warehouse 13. I started it because I have seen its name several times on The Librarians section (Big Thanks SpoilerTV), it made me curious.
ReplyDeleteI am so devastated by its cancellation. (no hyperbole here)
I nominated Elementary. It's fun and snarky (it's sherlock, come on...). There is no romantic nonsense ( Double Yeah !!). There is a great evolution of the characters. It is not vegetating, like some procedural tend to do.
The 100 is also a show to check out.
I voted for "Mom". So underrated, you guys.
ReplyDeleteJust submitted The 100.
ReplyDeleteTruly well developed show, with incredibly well crafted characters, fast paced storylines and incredible twits at every turn, The 100 is a show you sure will remember. If you are worried it may be too campy because it is sci-fi, worry not, the show plays it realistic
I would say that being a CBS project in a host of WB project renewals is probably the bigger factor.
ReplyDeleteOpen for anything really. Supernatural and The Leftovers are my faves this year though. But I won't watch any high shool based show (I'm just not interested haha).
ReplyDeleteReign
ReplyDeleteUgh i hate highschool based shows. Looking at my Name you probably know what i will recommend :D revenge is a really great show. It also has Action since it is about a woman seeking revenge on the people Who destroyed her fathers live. There are tons of fighting scenes and it the show is just juicy with great lead actresses and it is an excellent show to binge watch what i can say because i did it myself :)
ReplyDeleteI'm on the fence between The Good Wife and Jane The Virgin.
ReplyDeleteFor me, State of Affairs is the most underrated show. It was bad-mouthed by Katy Heigl naysayers. This is a great show, and I love to see a good portrayal of the inner workings of the CIA.
ReplyDeleteNaomi, Dahne didn't ask nor does she need me to defend her but, as a staunch die hard BATB, fan I had to go on record as saying she has let this be a solid platform for the fandom of the show to voice out options and love for the show here
ReplyDeleteOn Spoilertv, as a matter of fact that is how
I learned about this site I was looking for any news on the show, I found people discussing BATB, respectably with each other, lead by Dahne, who has remained fair and unbiased, so just to let you know she's a fair moderator, who didn't need my help in expressing her views but as a fan I had to let you know, where I stand!!
Forever
ReplyDeleteA fun and adventurous procedural show. An amazing combination of criminal catching, time traveling (flashbacks), educational dialogue (Henry spewing scientific facts all the time), non-romantic relationships, lovable and believable characters, funny situations, a big wonderful mystery and of course family love.
It's another amazing idea you've come up with @Dahne. Now I know I should give The 100 a try.
Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate your support. I understand what it is like to have your show under fire and rally to support it whenever and wherever you can. I often see the BatB fandom in a similar light to the Supernatural fandom in its early days, a fandom of which I was a part.
ReplyDeleteWhat About revenge?
ReplyDeleteWhy not nominate both then? Just make sure you fill out the form twice or else it might not come through the correct way. The more shows nominated, the more fun the article, and the more likely people will find a show they want to try out.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't a fan of the pilot of State of Affairs but I am glad I stuck with it because it has turned into a well-paced mystery and like you, I find the portrayal of the CIA fascinating.
ReplyDeleteForever is one of my favorite new shows of the season. I love the dynamic between Henry and Abe as well as the flashbacks in time. It saddens me that it doesn't get the ratings it deserves but hopefully more people will check it out. It is a fun twist on the crime procedure.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are going to try out The 100. It's unlike anything else on TV right now. Like any new show it has its ups and downs in the beginning, but Twilight's Last Gleaming is one of the noblest and heartbreaking episodes I have ever seen. It's one of the best TV episodes of the year for me. Earth Kills and Murphy's Law, the episodes right before it, showed just how dark this show was willing to go and fair warning, it does get very, very dark.
This is a show I didn't think I'd like, but as I always give the new pilots a try, I had a look. It surprised me. It's good. I love the main character and his sidekicks. And as maoose sid, the funny situations and family love. I really hope it's renewed and that more people give it a go.
ReplyDeleteP.S. It would be a great one to catch up with on the holidays...hint...hint.
Yep, I have to agree with you.
ReplyDeleteI used to outright hate BATB and some other shows for various reasons. But on SpoilerTV it's different. As time goes on other aspects start to shine through. There's a passion behind peoples love for shows that gets misconstrued on many other websites.
In the end TV is meant to be fun :) , not full of arguments and people fighting. The passion people have for their favorite shows is part of that fun.
I know that me personally, I've spoken to some of the BATB fans who have added me on twitter/FB and the conversations there (and even right here on SpoilerTV) were fun. :)
I picked Stalker because it really deserves to be watched by more people bc of Maggie Q, because it's not basic procedural, it is scary but entertaining and also clever, you should not trust the show by its pilot because each episodes, it goes better and better. Storylines are great and you should totally check it out :)
ReplyDeleteThe show is nostalgic, introspective, dark, heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteIt's about transformation and transition, and how their past experiences affect their current behavior. The characters are complex and the storytelling unfold slowly. Rectify is unique, it's unlike anything on tv. Believe me it's highly recommend!
Thank you. I will add it to my list!
ReplyDeleteSadly underappreciated show. I wish more people know about it. This series is a work of art, every scene is full of poetry. I think the people who enjoy the journey rather than the destination would love it.
ReplyDeleteModern Family never did anything for me and TBBT varies a lot in quality from one episode to the next. I've come to realize that my taste in shows is not exactly mainstream, which sadly is why so many shows I love get cancelled.
ReplyDeleteI don't get Sundance channel so I think that's why I had not heard of it. I see season 1 is on Netflix though so I will add it to my to-watch list.
ReplyDeleteReign is getting a lot of love in the nominations right now so you are in good company. Anytime you add historical elements, it adds more dimension to a drama. I am glad to see that it did much better than predicted last year.
ReplyDeleteHopefully we both will find some good ones. So far over 200 nominations have been made with 26 shows represented so we've got a good chance at finding something great.
ReplyDeleteThanks for participating.
ReplyDeleteThe Mindy Project is getting some love this year. You aren't alone in nominating it. Thanks for participating.
ReplyDeleteStalker surprised me. I didn't care for the pilot, feeling like it was using shock horror to make up for a lack of substance similar to The Following. However I like to give shows 3 episodes and I am glad I did with this one. I think it is the most improved from the pilot show out of all the newbies.
ReplyDeleteBrenda, I didn't realize I said anything for you to defend Dahne. I did say she was one of the few writers here on Spoiler that was fair, however she did say recently that the CW was the laughing stock for renewing BATB and as a moderator I wouldn't say that was being unbiased, would you? So I just let you know she doesn't need your help and I don't either when expressing my input. Sad to think as a fan of BATB we have people like you , who say your a fan, try to mislead or defend when there is no need to do so. I was just trying express my opinion as respectfully as I always do.
ReplyDeleteWarehouse 13, with the exception of the disastrous short last season, was a phenomenal show. I loved all the artifacts they included and how much fun the whole series was. For me, the Artie and Claudia relationship was the best part. The Librarians reminds me a lot of WH13 due to its plot and tone
ReplyDeleteI actually did not watch Elementary in the beginning because I was overloaded on procedurals and I've never been a fan of Sherlock Holmes on screen (except the Young Sherlock Holmes movie, which I loved). My podcast partner suggested it so I picked it up and then marathoned it. I love how there is no romantic relationship between the partners the most. That has become such a cliche that it completely ruins good shows for me. I also like that people nail Sherlock for his bad behavior and that the character is actually growing. Many times we are supposed to excuse Sherlock's bad behavior because of his brains so he has no incentive to grow as a person. Elementary changes this and makes by far my favorite incarnation of the character.
I only saw the pilot of Mom but I recently added it to the summer to-watch list because I had heard good things about it and I really like Allison Janney.
ReplyDeleteI like how the premise makes it sci-fi and the setting but much of what they use and do remains similar to ours thanks to conditions on the Ark. The advancements make sense for the show so it is never about cool tech toys but about the harrowing situations the characters find themselves in. It's much more survival adventure than sci-fi to me and I think it really works for the show.
ReplyDeleteHa! I agree that it's a great hiatus show. There's only been 11 episodes so it would be really quick to catch up on. The show ended up being a surprise to me as well.
ReplyDeleteI second the idea of not judging this show by its pilot. It has gotten increasingly better and it tackles some tough issues as well. I loved when the victim was a former Neo-Nazi and the team had to protect him even if they hated what he formerly stood for. It made for a great moral dilemma you don't usually see on an average procedural.
ReplyDeleteI ahve met a lot of great people through SpoilerTV as well. I love that you were able to communicate so well with people who are passioante about a show you're not into that you were able to have great discussions even beyond the site. That's exactly the kind of community that needs to be fostered on the internet.
ReplyDelete"Sad to think as a fan of BATB we have people like you"
ReplyDeleteThat's uncalled for and a personal attack. If you go back and read what you originally posted, you actually said that I was "one of the few writers who hate on BatB and its fans." I realize now that you meant to say "don't hate on" but I read it the same way as Brenda did too. I also don't think it is biased against a show to say that the CW renewing a show, any show, with ratings that low make it hard for people to take it seriously. It does. Again it is not against BatB or its fans but a comment on the business side of TV.
It really does, the whole survival adventure on the show is truly great and it usually leads to great character moments and intriguing plot twists. This show has been by far the most pleasant surprise of this year
ReplyDeleteI love Revenge, but this season has been a bit off for me. I still enjoy it a lot, but right now I feel The 100 is the better show and it needs more aid than Revenge, because Revenge gets the benefit of being a veteran with four seasons in the bag and potential for pitch selling a fifth and final season while The 100 doesn't have that luxury
ReplyDeleteSorry about that, I mean the misunderstanding my post part. .. No one is attacking anyone here and no need to make it seem that way. If anything I felt attacked for giving my view point and never said anything to make anyone defend you or anyone, that wasn't fair. And I do think it is biased for you to say the CW was the laughing stock for renewing BATB. It wasn't a nice thing to say and very insulting to the BATB fans that follow and defend you here. So with that being said I will now end my conversation and good luck with the the nominations.
ReplyDeleteI'm a really big fan. I like where it's going.
ReplyDeleteSo Stalker is the next new show on my list then. I've read such horrible things about the pilot but I'll persevere. Everything else that I read says that it is so much better than the pilot.
ReplyDeleteI nominated the 100, *o*
ReplyDeleteThis show is much better than people give it credit for. The storyline is amazing, the characters are very well built and I definitely don't regret spending any of my time watching it. :)
I nominated The 100. It's difficult to explain without spoiling, I tried.
ReplyDeleteI believe I was the only one who has nominated Please Like Me and I'm not sure it was properly written (English isn't my first language), but I'd really appreciate if you guys could give it a chance and put it out there so people can find out how awesome it is. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI have a quick question I forgot to ask earlier when I commented on this post.. When you compile all the submissions together that you like the best, will you be choosing one per show or just the best ones in general?
ReplyDeleteIt took my until about episode 5 to really get into the show so be patient with it. It has a serial component but I tend to like or not like the episode based on the strength of the case of the week mostly. I liked it better once Jack got himself in order.
ReplyDeleteThanks for participating.
ReplyDeleteI like how fast the pacing usually goes. When I am finished watching The 100, it doesn't feel like an hour has gone by and it usually leaves me wanting more.
ReplyDeleteHa! There are a number of plot twists that wouldn't have the same punch if you read them earlier.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you nominated this show. I have never heard of it before. I don't know much about Australian TV so thanks for bringing it to my attention.
ReplyDeleteSorry. I did not make that clear in the opening. I sort all the responses by show and then usually pick 3 to highlight in the article from each show. If it is a show that's struggling in the ratings and it got a lot of nominations then I usually include 5-6 of the responses in the article. However, I always include a link to all the responses so everyone can see what has been said about their favorites or to get more information if you are still on the fence about trying a show.
ReplyDeleteThanks for asking. Sometimes I get ahead of myself and forget to include details.
It's ok.. We all get ahead of ourselves sometimes. Thank you for the detailed response! I'm really looking forward to reading all the submissions!
ReplyDeleteAmazing feature Daphne!
ReplyDeleteI've just submitted mine. I submitted two, I hope it isn't a problem. But for the sake of variety, I submitted both a drama and a comedy. I imagine the 100 (my drama pick) will be the most popular choice this year since it's really well liked on this site (and deservedly so) but I still had to pick it anyway, since I really adore the show I find it a crime that it has to fight for its survival (like I wrote in my submission). As for the comedy, I submitted what is quite possibly the most underrated show on television which is About a Boy, a show with so much heart, yet that so few people are watching. By the way, I would totally recommend About a Boy to you. It seems to me to be the type of show that you would enjoy. And by the way, we're halfway through Season 2 and there has been no hint whatsoever at a possible relationship between Will and Fiona (the two main characters), so it's really about the exploration of the dynamics between a very unconventional family that is formed between these three human beings, no romantic relationships involved.
Anyway, there are more shows I find to be underrated but for now these are the ones I have submitted. Is there a limit of shows we can submit? I would like to make a special submission for Agents of Shield if possible to try to sum up to people why the show has improved so much.
Yes, Mom is a fabulous comedy. I started to watch it in early September this year before the season started when I was done with my catch up shows and with most of my summer shows and I was very meh at first, since I found the first episodes to be the weakest ones from the show, but once it starts going, it gets really good. It tackles very serious issues with humor and heart at the same time.
ReplyDeleteThis being said, I find it hard to bring Mom into this type of thing because it is probably the most specific-humor thing we have on TV right now. It's great for those who like and get into that type of humor but that's not something that appeals to everyone for the very nature of it. So while I love it, I understand it's not for everyone. But I think people should at least try it out, I second that ;)
That's great that Reign is getting a lot of nominations. I was thinking about nominating too because I have an interesting story with the show. I went from a lot of prejudice against it and strongly rooting against it to giving it a chance in the summer and falling in love with it intensely and now claiming it it one of my top 12 shows. But I have to control my nominations, otherwise you might kill me lol
ReplyDeleteI also adore the leftovers. But I have a hard time recommending it to people. It's so different from anything else and it's not really about the disappearance event even, so it's hard to explain to people what it is that they would be watching. I loved the experience of the show though, and the cast is top notch. Probably the most underrated cast on television.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this 100%. I've also submitted About a Boy, glad to hear I wasn't alone!! And I believe I even used the phrase "it may be having a sophmore slump ratings wise, but it certainly is on top of its game quality wise" ahah!
ReplyDeleteSadly, I think survival chances are very very bad right now, but I have to somehow make my peace with it and enjoy what I can. It's truly a wonderful show, too bad so many people are missing out!
I agree 100% about Star Crossed. I watched it entirely last year despite its certain cancellation from the moment it was scheduled and the show was great, it was really too bad that they went about it all wrong and sold it as a star crossed lovers thing. Even the name change (it was originally called Oxygen) was a bad idea.
ReplyDeleteThis was actually harder than I thought it would be. Trying to pitch something without spoilers is hard!
ReplyDeleteI pitched The 100 - from the comments, looks like this little gem of a show is getting lots of love so I will have to try to write a couple more before the deadline. Perhaps some eggnog will help....
I pitched "Beauty and The Beast". Such a great underrated show, with the most beautiful passionate couple ever! Sizzling chemistry :)
