Resurrection - Forsaken & Aftermath - Review: "History Repeating"

11 Dec 2014

Resurrection returned after a three week hiatus to less than stellar ratings. I enjoy this series, but if they want any chance at getting a third season renewal they will need to plan on something outstanding in the last 4 episodes. It especially doesn't help now that they are on another break until the new year.

The last two episodes showcased the "True Living" group and the damage they can, and did, cause around town; scaring the 'returned' and their families as well while resorting to vandalism. The True Living group was a great addition to this show, but I wish they would have done more with them than just paint people's homes and rough up Henry. Hopefully, in the episodes remaining this season (let's hope it is not the last season) they increase the True Living's menacing behavior.
"I'm Sure Fred is doing all he can"
- Henry

In season one we saw Fred as the main antagonist as opposed to the True Living group we have this season. The citizens of Arcadia seem to forget he was the one who brought the federal government to town and is probably, for the most part, the reason for most of the exodus of the 'returned' to the government facility this season. However, I am starting to like Fred more this season and, although he has yet to completely redeem himself, he is well on his way to becoming a hero before the final four episodes are done. Standing up to his 'returned' mother, Margaret, and getting Henry out of that factory deal with Brian Addison is a great start.

"And the little child shall lead them"
- Janine

The writers are definitely making Rachael's baby out to be some sort of savior even before he is born. Maggie discovered a way to use Rachael's amniotic fluid to cure the virus that has been ravaging the 'returned' (and Ray, whom we have to identify as being a 'returned' or not). Marty used his phone's location to track down the government facility he was in and his boss, Agent Forrester, actually came to the rescue providing the necessary serums for the cure. Rachael does manage to escape Janine's clutches, but it is still unclear what will become of her or where she will go at this point hence stopping at the railroad crossing.

I have said since the beginning of this season that I hoped they would focus more on Jacob's story. With the introduction of Michelle Fairley, as matriarch Margaret Langston, most of the screen time has gone to her and the factory storyline. I have enjoyed this season, but Resurrection is going to have to start doling out answers to the most important questions soon or risk hemorrhaging more viewers each week. I hope the show gets renewed for a third season, but the numbers do not look good for that to happen.

Thoughts and Discussion

- There are quite a few moments found in Resurrection that have foundations sourced from religious teachings. There is, as some fans think, a divine hand guiding these events, or at least it appears as such at times. Take for example when Janine touches Rachael's belly; she quotes from the Bible while asserting and hinting that the "child" will be the one to "lead" them. When she touches Rachael's belly in "Aftermath" she says, "The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them." This is from the Bible found in 'Isaiah 11:6'.

- Margaret Langston, whom is still much of a mystery to us, has been hinting lately at history repeating itself. Could this mean that the 'returned' will be hunted like we have seen from the 1930's? We are already witnessing something like that in the form of the True Living and what they have been planning.

- Will Margaret grant Jacob's wishes and do to him what she did to Barbara a few episodes back? I imagine that all the 'returned' will be involved in some sort of 'mass exodus' at some point this season. It would be nice if some of them could remain, but the show is about loss and the willingness to let go.

- I was looking forward to a standoff between Margaret and Michael Kirk. Now that the factory deal is not going through what will become of that story line? Will Michael Kirk find another way to get his revenge on the Langston's?

Thank you for checking out my Review! The next episode is not until early January so I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season! Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. IMO, I wish there were more than that. I'm not happy with the breaks. I think it's a great show that ABC should promote more by maybe rerunning a prior episode or two to keep the show on everyone's minds so to speak.

  2. That would actually be a very good idea. I'm not certain what ABC has planned for the Sunday night spot.

  3. The person that really needed to come back. DIDNT! you kiddin me? e.e i still have my hopes for Tom.
Rachel has gone through a lot since season one. She came back twice, the child is "special" in a saviour kind of way and now she lost Tom. Will this be her breaking point and wish to go because she will feel she has noone left?. I felt like she might do it when she was on that train stop.
I think the problem with all of this ratings thing is that they are moving things slowly. First season was the same but a second season with the same formula, people wont and didnt like it.

I have a feeling the series will them with all the returning going the same way the came. Some like Jacob will know when that will happen. And the only one remaining will be Rachel's baby.
Great review, man. It's been a long time since I last read something from you xD.

  5. I saw that, but I thought that is after the season ends anyway.

  6. Thanks Ron! I appreciate the kind words!

I have my hopes up for Tom too! I am thinking Rachael will vanish because she has nothing left now that Tom is gone. But maybe she will meet up with Marty or Maggie first for some last minute story arc?

I agree about the ratings. The separate breaks don't help either.

I Review Four Shows total at the moment for SpoilerTV : The Leftovers, The Strain, The Blacklist and Resurrection. The Leftovers and The Strain are Spring/Summer Shows and The Blacklist is on a long Winter break right now until February so that's why you haven't seen anything from me.

During this break (Now that Resurrection is on one until January) I am working on an article comparing The Walking Dead TV Series to the source material, the comic book.

There is also a new show on Cinemax that I really want to Review coming out this Summer. It's called Outcast and it's by the same creator of The Walking Dead as well as based on a Comic Book by the same name.

  7. Great review as always Geo, this show manages to pull all kinds of emotions from me, I know the ratings have increasingly tanking, if other viewers would just give it a chance, I'll admit it continues to drag on and not answer a lot of questions, I really want to know Margaret's story we know she's evil but Fred is the one that stood up to her, I think Fred has redeemed himself, he Marty and Maggie are the true hero's and now they had to go and mess with Tom, I loved his character, if we get another season truly he'd come back, I hope Margaret doesn't take Jacob away, and if these next four episodes have more answers for us I'd be a happy viewer, Happy Holidays Geo,looking forward to continueing to read your awesome reviews!!!

  8. Did you read about The Leftovers going to another town but keeping the main characters from season 1.... I think it will be great to see how other people deal with everything. tho it woulve been ok if they used some otf te one that are already on the show and make a story for them like the twins or Jill's best friend.

  9. I did read that, yes. I thought the same thing... it would've been cool to do stories about some of the minor characters like the twins. I am sure it will still be amazing whatever they plan to do!

  10. Thank you so much for the kind words Brenda! I appreciate it!

Tom will definitely be missed and I think if there is a Season 3 (I really hope so) then the writers should figure out a way to bring him back. That would be a great story arc.

The final four Eps should be great as well and I really hope we get some answers as to why the 'returned' are here and why -- among other important questions. In my Review of the next Ep I will be sure to include a list of questions that need answering before the final episode of the season concludes.

So, if you or anyone else, has some great questions for me to include let me know here in the comments!!!!

Until then, Happy Holidays to you Brenda, and Happy Holidays to everyone! It has been a great year and I hope it is even better in 2015 for everyone! :)

  11. I think you're wrong when you say Reachel has nothing left to live for. She has the baby... That's why she survived. For the baby. That's why she ran away from Tom's crazy wife. She wants to have this baby and once the baby is born, she will have even more to live for.
