I was pleasantly surprised, but could not understand Elly going along with it. At any rate, loved this version as well as the original. Jack's death still smarts.
I found myself asking, "What was the point?". Gracepoint was practically a carbon copy of Broadchurch. I knew there had to be a twist because Joe's confession happened too early in the episode. So now we know Tom was attempting to protect Danny, but ended up accidentally killing him instead. Ellie should've known better than to keep this secret. She may think she is protecting her son, but it could cause irreparable harm to Tom. What child could experience that kind of trauma during his formative years and end up a mentally healthy adult?
We also know Carver realized there is more to Joe's confession because he reviewed Joe and Tom's interview that was recorded on his phone. What happens next? Does Carver figure out Tom's involvement in Danny's death? Does Carver confront Ellie? Does Ellie admit the truth? Does Carver reopen the investigation to disclose the truth or does he burry it to protect Ellie and her children? It's the what happens next question that ended up making this series overall unsatisfying for me because there will be closure in this story that unfolded over ten weeks since the series is now over. It's really too bad because if this series was handled differently than its predecessor, it really could've been really great.
elle j. asks " Does Carver figure out Tom's involvement in Danny's death?" Go back and review that final scene, elle. That's exactly what Carver is doing as the scene ends. That's why he keeps replaying Tom's statement that he never witnessed anybody ELSE hitting Danny. Carvers' no amateur on the job; he knows what Tom's saying.
I understood the point of Carver reviewing the interview. I guess my point is what would Carver do next? All he had at that point was a gut instinct that Tom knew more about or was involved in Danny's death. Carver doesn't know for sure Tom struck Danny and he really doesn't know if it was done maliciously or accidentally. For that matter, it wasn't Tom accidentally hitting Danny with the oar that killed him, it was the blow Danny suffered when his head landed on the rock. In the end it doesn't really matter if Carver figures out and/or can prove it much less what he does with that truth.
I was hoping the killer would be someone other than the Miller family.
I was about to throw something when Joe confessed but I though it was way to early ion the episode and there must be a twist coming. From the beginning of the show I thought that Tom must be involved in the death somehow and I was right.
I was really hoping with get conclusion to Vince and Susan storyline, but eh, you can't get everything.
I like the open-ending, too.
Overall, I was glad that the ending wad different and this wasn't a complete waste of my time.
Which only makes it worst, how does the por kid recover from that? and it makes it seem as if the writers didn't have the balls to commit to a controversial storyline and went only half way for shock value. Still glad I didn't stick around,
But, Tom is a troubled child, and most likely will suffer too. Elly not being true to her chosen profession, enables Tom to carry the burden of Danny's death, and the knowledge of his fathers attraction to Danny. It also strips Danny's family of the whole truth.
You know what would have been great? If this episode was Episode 5. Gracepoint could have then spent the latter half of the season with the outcome of that fantastic ending. It still would have stayed true to the premise of catching Danny's killer but there would have been enough distinction for Gracepoint to stand on its own merits.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Meh- it was predictable but I like the ending
ReplyDeleteWho killed the kid?

ReplyDeleteHaven't watched the show yet, wanted to know first if it is a different murder than the original? Please just answer with yes or no! Thank you :)
ReplyDeleteBecause she thought that Joe deserved to suffer, and I agree.
ReplyDeleteTom Miller, He accidentally hit him in the head with an oar.
ReplyDeleteYep, the killer is different.
ReplyDeleteWARNING: don't come back to this thread and read the other comments as they say who the killer is.

So the kid killed his friend? Right now I'm so glad I didn't strick to this... A child killing another child is not something I want to see on my tv.
ReplyDeleteLike I said, it was an accident. He was waving the oar trying to get his dad to back away, but it hit Danny in the head.

ReplyDeleteThanks :) then I will have to find time to watch it now^^

ReplyDeleteHe would of never hit Danny if Danny didn't run back lol
ReplyDeleteMe too but i guess Like Father Like Son really sticks with ppl lol
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure Carver has it all figured out by the end of the episode. And, judging by his expression, he is not about to let it go.
ReplyDeleteOh ok, thx
