I voted for good. It was better than a standard Xmas episode, sagged a little in the middle a little perhaps, but not as fluffy as many of them can be. As I said in my preview Shona, Faye Marsay, stood out as the best thing in it imo, her character seemed to be more rounded due to her performance than most of the others. I'd love her to come back as a companion, though I can see her annoying Capaldi's Doctor to hell and back, lol. I will definitely be keeping an eye on her career though, she's fab!
Yeah I was happy Clara stayed. When I got access to my preview copy, the first thing I did was check the last scene to see if she was or not, then heaved a sigh of relief, haha!
Haven't got long but I really enjoyed that - not too complicated ( for me ) and not too sentimental - and I'm pleased Jenna Coleman is staying because her chemistry with Peter is great...
Even though Clara stayed is there a chance they are trying to 'throw' us off ( creating a false sense of security for us fans ) and Clara will end up dying/be torn from the Doctors life in a few episode / by seasons end ?
I've always had the feeling that she will leave mid-season 9. I do hope that she gets a happy departure though, the tearful ones are getting a bit old hat these days I feel.
Oh, that's how you do a Xmas special, Moffat! Intriguing, logical (which I no longer expect from this era, so that's something) and funny. Great to see Danny one last time, loved Shona. Beautiful scene when the Doctor woke up, he was so pleased to see Clara young, alive and awake with him. A little more excited for season 9! But still wanting Moffat to leave ASAP.
Honestly, the only really remotely sad departure were Amy & Smith. I did not see the others that way much at all. At least the way they were written anyway. But I suppose that is just opinion anyways.
Well exactly, that's the problem with it imo. Those two and Eccleston are the sad ones for me, but then they have been the ones that I have been most fond of. When it comes to, say, Rose or 10 I just get annoyed at the way it's written because I'm just glad that they are gone at last.
I love Clara, but I know that she a very divisive character so it's not that I'd just like her to happy, or that she's already had many deaths already as altClara's. But I'd like her leaving not to cause so much so many people to bitch about how crap it is. Then again, I suppose I'm hoping for too much any way, this being the show it is.... lol
Even though it was a bit of a rip off of the Alien movies I enjoyed it but was disappointed that they didn't stick with the original Christmas story in which Clara died of old age.
Was it just me or was there a heart shape seen during the scene where the Doctor and Clara wished each other a happy christmas. Also in a nice contrast to Eleven we see that Twelve doesn't seem to notice the age of his companions even when they have significantly aged. I get that we saw glimpses of that during S8 but never with the same companion. That scene brought to my mind Eleven's reaction to Amy's wrinkles in Angels take Manhattan and also River's words about not letting the Doctor see their aging. Finally will we attribute Twelve and Clara's second to Santa or will that play a part on the new series as the ongoing mystery of the series. Or will we see Missy as the villain again considering she is returning for S9.
Awesome episode. I loved the evolution of Clara and Twelve's friendship and his ability to overlook her age in one of the dream states was the definition of friendship! Shonda was fun.
I was very scared Clara wasn't returning when she was old, Moffat definitely threw me off, he had a lot of Inception going on :) I'm happy she stayed :)
Nick Frost as Santa was perfect, he was funny as were those Elves, lol at them taking selfies with the 'North Pole' and having feels.
Danny Pink! Seeing him in the dreamstate was nice but saddening, even in the dream he wanted her to be happy and live her life, only asking her to give him only 5 minutes a day to remember him.
I love their chemistry also. And before anyone makes an overstaying welcome comparison with Amy's character arc, I feel like Jenna will only really have 2 series under her belt. I loved her role as the impossible girl, but because of the different dynamics she has with the Doctors, I tend to consider only her development in series 8 as her tenure with her Doctor so far. For me series 7 was a great introduction for Clara similar to River's introduction under Ten's tenure only to expand on the character during Eleven's tenure.
I really think Shona is being set up as a future companion, she called him a Magician didn't she and the S9 opening episode is The Magician's Apprentice....I wouldn't mind two companions in the Tardis.
I avoided any spoilers or going to Yahoo/Facebook home page today, and was really happy with the episode because of it I got to enjoy the surprise really well.
Dream within a dream withing a dream, that inception was nice. I like that store worker - Shona character.
Doctor and Clara also had great moments. The dream was sad and nice. The first save outside the north pole was nicely done for a second it made me go woa 62 years yaowza, fix how?, then when awe shit another dream. Nice that Clara will stay a little longer, them two really need to leave off on a better note. From the 11th time Clara and the Doctor started off very upbeat and fun, that's how they the end for them should also be. I just wish there is a real good reason for leaving. I always wonder why would anyone want to leave, unless they are taken or their time is done.
I loved the xmas special. I thought it'd be awful and it ended surprising me, it was great. About Clara staying: I like her, but I hope she won't stay during the whole season 9. Maybe she can leave in the middle of the season just like Amy did on season 7. In my opinion, it's time for a new companion.
He's been called that a few times now, he even called himself that in Time Heist last year. I don't really get the visual joke myself though, he doesn't look like a magician to me at all!
It could be that Shona is a new companion, or apprentice, but being Moffat I'd put money on it being more of a play on words. That guy never says something as straight forward as that, especially when it comes to titles. He'll probably meet Houdini, or something like that, and their assistant has been infested by an alien, lol.
That's exactly what I thought after seeing the title (right after thinking it could refer to a new companion). That I was thinking too much and they would probably encounter Houndini and learn the true alien origin of The Rabit in the Hat trick. xD
I am mentally dancing in Shona's way right now. Clara stayed !
I am always worried about introducing Santa in an episode without turning it into a cheesy and corny mess. But It worked actually pretty well. Faye Marsay was great for one. I just adored Shona dancing. This girl is definitely companion materiel. It would actually be pretty interesting for the Doc to have two actual companion without any romantic involvement. I think it would make an interesting mechanic.
I liked the dream mess the episode was. Clara got to see Danny even if it was for five minute. This is what I call a gift. I think the episode was well crafted.
And Clara has her own Santa. How great that is ? I knew she would come to that realisation sooner or later and it was very nice to see.
And lol, when the doctor came the first time free Clara, I saw the light hair and I thought he got to the wrong house ! Little did I know she was actually, well almost 90 years old !
I like how Clara called the Doctor Impossible. It was a nice reference.
Considering the entire base was a dream, are Clara's math skills part of the dream also. And if so was it Clara projecting herself as nearly perfect or Twelve envisioning Clara as such.
I think she won't be on the whole season too, but for a different reason: Clara needs to be pregnant so Danny's descendant can exist. Pregnancy would be a good (and happy) reason to quit dangerous time traveling.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
What a lovely way to finish Christmas Day ! :D The episode was brilliant, I loved it !
ReplyDeleteI thought Clara would leave but she's staying and I am so glad about it :D
Can't wait for the Magician's Apprentice ! (I love this title already ^^)
Pretty cool!

ReplyDeleteAgreed, I like their chemistry, they work well as a team
ReplyDeleteI was so relieved at the end when Clara stayed with the Doctor. Love them together. As far as the episode goes Iiked it more than some past ones
ReplyDeleteAwesome episode, it was just awesome. And the possibility of Santa being real is awesome,

ReplyDeleteSo, I officially have elevated Steven to love-hate status. I was touched so much at that Doctor-Clara scene, and then boom! Wake up!
ReplyDelete"There's a horror movie called Alien? That's really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you." Ahah! Don't tell him about The Thing.
I avoided any spoilers or going to Yahoo/Facebook home page today, and was really happy with the episode because of it I got to enjoy the surprise really well.

ReplyDeleteGood.
ReplyDeleteI hope was Clare Leave :-(
