The Lola/Narcisse scene along the Mary/Catherine one were the best.
ReplyDeleteSeriously? Mary is Raped is classed as a What was your favorite scene in Reign "Acts of War"?
ReplyDeleteThis is downright shameful.
I think you're confusing the word Favourite. Some of the most harrowing and powerful scenes in TV and Movie history have been some of my favourites. Does not mean I like what happened or condone what happened in the those scenes
ReplyDeleteThank you for these words. I wish I'd read more opinions like this on here for this episode. I think with this episode of Reign, a lot of people don't see the scene as what it is ... When I was at RingCon in October, Manu Bennett said that he had many people coming up to him after the episode in which he killed Moira aired and thank "him" for killing her ... does this mean all of those people are bad and dangerous people? Does this mean all of those people do not mind murder? No.
ReplyDelete... And just the same: People who do not hate the show for going with this scene are not bad people. It does not mean you are OK with rape. It does not mean they would do the same "in a situation like that"...
It's a fictional show that is exploring - like all other shows - all sorts of possible human actions and reactions and emotions and lack there of to be able to make a living and survive in the universe they're in ... for Reign, that means 16th Century france... and while it's aweful, things like that have always happened and will always happen and I rather have shows and movies portray it as it is rather than promising a perfect world when, really, it's not.
People that complain about Reign annoy me so much. Sure I get you up to some point.
ReplyDeleteBut if we have to boycot every show that triggers bad feelings or could possibly do that we should probably just all stop watching TV all together!
Every show triggers some memory. Rape, murder, violence, robbing, stabbing, suicide, eating disorders, self harm. Reign doesn’t glorify rape! Reign shows it for what it is!
You can’t rewrite history just because you feel uncomfortable about a scene
ReplyDeleteYes, rape has always been an issue and especially in the middle age period when women had no rights and no power over their own lives, not even queens.
But it’s not TVD or PPL where a rape scene would most likely be used only as a plot device. Reign is a historical show therefore it has the most potential to handle an issue like rape appropriately. THESE THINGS HAPPENED. WOMEN WERE OPPRESED, VICTIMEZED AND YOU SHOULDN’T IGNORE IT JUST BECAUSE YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE.
Don’t you feel uncomfortable watching people get murdered, tortured, manipulated? Doesn’t that bother you as well? Why are those more acceptable on Reign (or on any other show for that matter) than rape?
Catherine helping Mary. Adelaide and Megan are brilliant every single time.
ReplyDeleteI will simply echo @DarkUFO's words. Favorite doesn't mean you like what happened in the scene. It may be a funny or shocking scene that is powerful and stays with you. It could be the death of a character or the birth of one. This was a shocking act. I considered putting "Mary is violated" and then reconsidered because the character herself uses the word raped. Given the level of discussion that the scene has already generated, I would have been remiss in not including it as an important scene.
ReplyDeleteCatherine comforting Mary is one of my top 3 scenes from this series. where we usually see Catherine as cold and self serving she really stepped up for Mary in a time when Mary felt broken, from the moment she saw Mary in the hallway she immediately knew. Instead of coddling she offered her strength and counsel which is what Mary needed in that moment as a Queen and as women. They often allude to the fact that when Mary was a child and at court Catherine thought and treated her as daughter. I think last night was good throw back to that affection. Fellows and Kade were superb in these scenes, their performances almost brought me to tears.
ReplyDeleteUmmm how can a rape scene ever be considered a favourite scene, seems a bit tactless and heartless to include this as an option. C'mon!!!!
ReplyDeleteAs we said above, favorite can mean most powerful, sad, funny, romantic, etc. Favorite does not mean that you like it. Character deaths have also been listed as favorites. Given how well acted and impactful that scene is - and how it will resonate with so many viewers and no doubt for the storylines on the show, it would have been remiss not to include it.
