Looks like all this is gonna be a dream sequence type episode. As the title suggests, Machine will consider the possibility if it does one thing - that results in the team dying - and then choose another option.
Don't usually like these types of episodes but I have faith that if this is the route they take, POI will do it brilliantly.
Yep, I agree. I guess this'll be a mix of "real life progress" and ongoing predictions, so we'll get more insight in how the Machine and Samaritan do their "chess game". I also have problems with these types of episodes, but I trust the POI writers. Looks very promising
Ditto. I'm generally not a fan of alt-universe or alt-future episodes but at least with POI you know there will be some real purpose and insight behind it.
Considering the trajectory of the show's mythology, such a type of episode ( if it is indeed one) makes perfect sense. An episode fully in the Machine's 'mind', so to speak. The more I think about this being a possibility, the more epic it sounds.
Has any show attempted such a thing? If it indeed comes to pass, then it is something truly extraordinary in terms of story telling.
I agree that multiple scenario situations have previously been explored in the form of dreams, parallel timelines etc. but to see an episode from the POV of the Machine, where the AI is 'thinking', 'mapping', and most importantly 'visualizing' various if-then-else story lines would be something monumental.
Makes me feel ill looking at just a possible consequence of action. This show really puts me through an emotional and intellectual workout each week. Amazing for a TV show.
Very Possible could it a what if the machine fought back as samaritan did say if the machine was prepared to let all there agents die. It'd be a very risky move of the POI Writters but could samaritan take the Machine's Place for a number of the episodes & the machine goes into hiding to reassess things & figure out a way to beat samaritan.
Then the Machine comes out of hiding with a gameplan towards the end of Season 4 with like 5//6 episodes of the season left
Difference of ground & sky between a dream/Alt sequence and the Machine visualizing various possible scenarios. It would be like getting a peek inside the Machine's mind as she thinks and plays out various scenarios in its 'mind'.
At this point of time, the two Machines are almost fully fledged characters. I may slip up sometimes, but I am making a concerted effort to call the Machine a 'she' and Samaritan as a 'he'. :)
One crazy prediction I just though of is what if In order to justify the death of one of our beloved major characters (Root?) by the end of this story arc - the machine is showing us beforehand the worst case scenario in which ALL of them die so that the character is a smaller sacrifice for the greater good of the team? It will at least make the death lighter for the fact that it was to a truly noble end which would be the redeeming act Root kind of needs after how she started out...The impact on all the characters would run throughout the rest of the show dare i say even more so than Carter's did especially for Finch and Shaw...I still remember Reese's phone call with her after getting Finch back and Root needs to make up for a lot of bad stuff she's done and if you go back to an episode like / (Root Path) you'll see she already accepts the machine is asking for her willingness to atone for all those little nasty things...maybe it won't be Root...maybe nobody will, but this would be a scenario I'd appreciate though I really love them all and hate to lose them from the show
Totally agree. It's like we're viewing it all through the machine’s point of view going through scenarios of their greatest chances of survival and hopefuIly She’s going to pick the right scenario for them to survive. Then the episode title “If-then-Else” makes sense. However, If they killed off Shaw they wouldn't need to deal with Sarah's baby bump ;) But episode 4.13 is called "M.I.A." right? So maybe Shaw's the one who will be missing for a while. And I would really miss the flirting and teasing between little grumpy Shaw and the perky psycho.
I don't know what to say other that it looks bad. And just a theory from user on a reddit "watcher1027 I had a thought about the nature of the next episode. Given the supposed carnage shown in the promo, I wonder if the episode will be set up as The Machine running the same scenario over again, i.e. it plays out a scenario and Harold ends up dead, so it then tries again, changing things until it reaches the "right" conclusion (which I think will be the Machine "killing" itself or sacrificing itself in some way for the team). So the episode is essentially constructed of the same scenario played out with different results, shown from the Machine's perspective.
Person of Interest isn't exactly known for particularly out of the box story construction, so I could be wrong. But it's an interesting concept.
Either this will be, like Bradley said, an episode that shows the Machine calculating the 'If then else' possibilities (hence all the death scenes...because c'mon, they can't kill 3 characters), OR....
The one character they didn't show getting shot is Fusco. This is what they did last time. Made us all think Fusco was gonna die, then pulled Carter on us. Since Lionel isn't one of her 'official' agents, the Machine might calculate that he's the more expendable, in order to save the other three agents' lives.
And I can see that becoming a huge problem with the whole 'trust the Machine' thing.
Just my two cents. The writers love to slap us around and then pull fast ones...
Here's an idea: the Machine picks Reese to be killed, but Reese - because he's Reese - just doesn't die. Because he's Reese and he doesn't do dying. Problem solved.
I love the idea/rumor that the episode is the Machine running through a bunch of scenarios for the best possible one, otherwise it looks like a lot of shit is going to go down. It looks crazy interesting and exciting and terrifying. And can someone put Martine down yet? I'm tired of her.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteAnd it'll be really well written. I'm really quite excited for it.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought a simulation of a scenario by the Machine or Samaritan! The Machine needs to prove she has a moral compass.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it'll be a simulation by the Machine I'd say. I only say dream sequence as that is really what it is.
ReplyDeleteConsidering the trajectory of the show's mythology, such a type of episode ( if it is indeed one) makes perfect sense. An episode fully in the Machine's 'mind', so to speak. The more I think about this being a possibility, the more epic it sounds.

I think a few shows have done similar things, on a lesser scale than this, if it's multiple scenarios, rather than just two or less.
ReplyDeleteI agree that multiple scenario situations have previously been explored in the form of dreams, parallel timelines etc. but to see an episode from the POV of the Machine, where the AI is 'thinking', 'mapping', and most importantly 'visualizing' various if-then-else story lines would be something monumental.
ReplyDeleteWow just wow, POI is about to get to next level.
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be amazing.
ReplyDeleteMakes me feel ill looking at just a possible consequence of action. This show really puts me through an emotional and intellectual workout each week. Amazing for a TV show.
ReplyDeleteBest show on television. This is going to be on a new scale of epic. Enough said.
ReplyDeleteAll of a sudden, the episode title makes a lot of sense.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they will kill the main characters.......but I hope Greer or Martine don't last the entire trilogy either dead or arrest
ReplyDeleteSuch Evilness of CBS to do this. POI/CBS Your Killing Me!!

ReplyDeleteMay seem a minor matter, but that sweeping shot of the New York skyline (not from an AI POV) was a thing a beauty.
ReplyDeleteFor the promo itself... that replay button's gonna get raped.
huh Samaritan a dude?, makes sense he is a psychopath LOL and yeah you're right The Machine has been a main character since season 1
ReplyDeleteif u r a comp geek u know this ep is gonna be a dream seq based ep.
ReplyDeleteRather an AI-induced simulation.

So Person of Interest turns into Tru Calling. Eliza Dushku to star in an upcoming episode of PoI perhaps?
ReplyDeleteDon't worry. Denise The is writing this episode and she was the one that wrote "The Crossing" last year. I have complete faith in her.
ReplyDeleteI AM NEVER GOING TO BE READY FOR THIS EPISODE!
ReplyDeleteI sure hope this next ep is an alt-reality episode. It would be devastating if Reese and Finch died...not that i want to see any team member die.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, other characters, including Finch, have started calling the Machine 'she'. XD
ReplyDeleteI agree. Also, this is the first time in my life that I'm actually *excited* to see this kind of episode XD
ReplyDeleteMy God. You're genious!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait till this episode airs they're doing a great job on the writing etc I love it I think carter left at the right time
ReplyDeleteIs really Sarah pregnant? Fuck, i hate them when they do that :P
ReplyDeleteThey destroy the series' continuity and usually it's my favorite characters that get killed!
Please stop making babies, if not for the television's benefits then for the extreme growth of world population!!!
Well, there is no official statement I think and they are really doing a great job hiding it but there are some scenes you can see it.
ReplyDeleteHere's an idea: the Machine picks Reese to be killed, but Reese - because he's Reese - just doesn't die. Because he's Reese and he doesn't do dying. Problem solved.

ReplyDeleteI am so addicted to this promo
