Once Upon a Time - Fall - Review: "The Perfect Episode"
Dec 1, 2014
Once Upon A Time PB Reviews“Fall” is the perfect Once Upon a Time episode. It is fast paced, it has tension balanced with great humor, drama and one incredibly poignant moment followed by a strong final shot. Over the past few weeks I’ve been talking about what the show should be and I think “Fall” is the greatest example I can think of. It’s not that OUAT didn’t have outstanding episodes before, “The Miller’s Daughter”, “Welcome to Storybrooke”, “Going on Home” and “Snow Drift/There’s no Place like Home” are also perfect OUAT episodes, but “Fall” is the one I would use as an example of the show at its best, mostly because it showcases every single one of OUAT’s strengths and none of its weak points.
One of the greatest thing about the episode lies in a subtle detail that the writers set themselves to make really funny lines whenever we went through a “transition” scene, a scene that is merely there to move the plot along. Humor is key to OUAT’s success, because the show is silly by nature the humor makes it not only passable, but also kind of great, as the writers turn one of the show weakness into one of its strengths just with a little twist on the lines. That’s really worthy of praise, and you’ll see on the stray observations some of my favorite lines from last night’s episode.
But humor alone isn’t enough to make the episode great, it is the constant tension and the inevitable sense of doom around everyone, bringing out the best and the worst of the people of Storybrooke. Fantasy is a genre which allows you to peek into deep human emotions that are not easily seen or are usually missed on your daily life, bringing them up with intense and incredible situations. The spell of shattered sight coming to town brings up a lot of stakes and a lot despair and fear to our characters, and it portrays them with grace.
Think about Snow anxiety over Elsa’s unstoppable determination to find Anna; usually Snow is sweet, kind and optimistic, but with the spell of shattered sight coming to town, she can’t hide her fear and it suddenly turns into anger; she doesn’t make a tantrum or anything like that, she just makes an angered comment, but within that subtlety we can see that something that Snow usually trying to ignore (her fear) is coming up and she shows us that she is more than just smiles and good will.
Not much really happens in this episode, it acts mostly like a prologue for next week’s “Shattered Sight”, but it does its job wonderfully.
The writers found a smart way to include Anna, Kristoff -and even Hans- into OUAT’s current timeline by explaining that Ingrid’s spell froze over Arendelle for 30 years; it makes sense and it allows to turn the flashback into a real time event, and it also makes sense that Arendelle would defrost just now as Ingrid is busy concentrating her powers on Shattered Sight.
It is great to see Anna and Kristoff kicking ass while escaping from Hans and his men on the castle -but how did Hans gathered his men so quickly? -and it is also great to see Black Beard again, who wasn’t killed by Hook after all, but saved by a mermaid. It all comes together surprisingly natural.
Meanwhile, on Storybrooke, Elsa is just about to find Anna by using the locator spell used on her necklace, but time is running short and if they can’t find Anna to help them stop the spell the fairies will have to use the necklace instead. That puts Emma and company in a tight spot, and as Regina says, they are not only heroes but leaders and they have to make tough choices sometimes. OUAT is a show that sometimes commits to overly simple solutions via magic, but this time it actually made sure to make stakes that could not be solved that easily.
Elsa tricks them so that she can use her powers to find Anna, but as she gets from the tunnels to the beach and the glow of her necklace grows dimmer, she starts losing hope and Emma grows more desperate to get back to the fairies to try and fix everything. And while this is happening, Anna and Kristoff are drowning, scared for their lives, coming in a perfect combination of love and hopelessness
Elsa talks to her necklace, trying to feel closer to Anna, and she decides not to lose hope, and she makes a wish to see her sister again, bringing Anna and Kristoff to our world. As we know, true love is the most powerful magic there is, powerful enough to pull Anna and Kristoff into our world, and the reunion of the sisters comes up in a moving way with their blabbing and hugging.
Sadly for them, it is a little too late to make use of Anna to prevent the effects of the spell as Hook already sucked them into the sorceress hat by the time they get to them.
Poor Hook has no choice but to obey Rumple since he has his heart, and the dark one is showing his darkest self; making a deal to escape town with Belle and Henry, Rumple chooses to screw the town and save himself and he uses Hook for his dirty bidding. The saddest part comes when he tells Hook that he won’t spare his life and that he has this day to live.
Meanwhile, Regina does everything she can to protect the people she loves. She warns Robin Hood and his men about the incoming spell and she locks Henry in a room, protecting him with light magic, so that he would be safe; Henry puts his trust on Regina and it turns into quite an emotional moment for the two of them, but the following one is even stronger.
Robin Hood came to see if Regina needed him to be with her, but she insist to lock herself up alone. She knows that the worst side of her is coming out with the spell and as such she can’t allow herself to hurt anyone, so she bravely decides to use her light magic to try to contain herself in there. Regina has come so far in her path to be a better person and to make good decisions that she is willing to do everything in his power to avoid hurting people. The darkness is still in her, she is aware of that, but the goodness in Regina is what makes her take this decision and as she cast the spell to lock herself up. We see how worried she is and it just hit all kinds of highlights for the character; seasons of trying to redeem herself are in shown right on this moment.
We are reaching the end of the episode: Snow and David are locked in the cells of the sheriff office while Kristoff gets handcuffed. Hook comes to say goodbye before he dies and Emma allows herself to a moment of vulnerability, she starts to tear up and she goes and kiss Hook in an incredibly touching moment. And talking about emotionally affecting moments, Snow and David hand holds until the spell reaches them and then they slowly retreat their hands, looking each other quite conflicted. Cut to black.
There was something arty about the way the spell came down and the way the last scene was shot was beyond wonderful, closing a perfect episode with the perfect ending, with a lot of symbolism and build up for next week’s episode.
OUAT is great when it is honest about who the characters are and when the stories it tells on the flashbacks have a clear connection to what is going on with the story. “Fall” does exactly that and portrays a lot of deep human emotion that just lands; it connects with fear and uses it to showcase despair and what it brings to the table, some lingering hope, panic and evil, and it does so wonderfully.
The show centered itself on one theme and it built up with it with tension and a lot of high stakes, and it didn’t shy away from the incoming disaster; instead of fixing or preventing the spell, the show allowed it to hit our characters so that it can showcase how the inevitability of it affects the people on Storybrooke and it does an amazing job on it. This is the perfect example of what a great OUAT episode is: an episode that isn’t afraid of dealing with high stakes.
Grade: A
Stray Observations:
-Regina: “Looks like that wall doesn’t care much for your brute force.”
Regina delivered some of the funniest lines on the episode, so expect to see many of her lines on these stray observations.
-Elsa: “It is a sign! A sign that we are going to win!”
Regina: “Is everyone into this hope thing now?”
-Is it me or was Emily de Ravin shaking every time she talked to Emma and Elsa? It was weird.
-Elsa: “Sometimes sentimentalism pays off.”
Emma: “Point Elsa.”
-Does Rumple have something against fairies? If so, it came pretty much without notice.
-Rumple: “If I have to choose between me and everyone else, me wins, every time.”
-Lana Parilla really killed it on his scene with Robin Hood! She really looked like she was in love with him. She is such a great actress.
-Elsa: “Do you think she is down there.”
Emma: “Regina held a dragon there for 28 years, I think she can fit a small princess.”
-Snow: “You are talking like a hero.”
Regina: “Yeah, like all you Charmings always do.”
-Kristoff: “I told you pirates were easier to deal than wizards.”
Anna: “I told you that!”
-Regina: “It will be sundown before you munchkins finish!”
Grumpy: “Dwarfs, sister.”
Regina: “Like I care!”
-Regina: “I should know better than trust blonds by now.”
-Snow: “It seems like Elsa’s blind faith is screwing us right now!”
Regina: “Coming from you that’s terrifying.”
I agree with Regina, it is terrifying (and I love it!)
-Anna: “You rolled around in gold bars? Weird. And, ouch!”
-Anna: “What a funny looking world!”
Elsa: “Right?”
-And that's it for this week! What confrontation are you looking forward the most during next week's "Shattered Sight"? For me it has to be Snow and Regina.

I have to agree with you, once again Regina has the best lines on the episode... It's refreshing to see that's while she's staying true to her "good" side, she still has her "evil" sass, I like that. And the line she tells the Charmings about being a Leader, I think it's one of my favourite quotes from the TV show.
ReplyDeleteAnd, Snow was amazing, for a change! I can't remember when was the last episode I genuinely enjoyed the character. I can't wait to see her reactions towards Charming and Regina. It's going to be epic. :D
Rumple always had something against the fairies, as Blue helped Bae to run away from him to the world without magic. It was alrerady implied in "Dreamy".
ReplyDeleteCan we talk about how Emma knew something was wrong with Hook after the kiss? I cannot wait till when the spell is broken and she notices he is not around and go kick so Rumple's ass! and the dark one is my fave Rumple, the greatest villain of all!
ReplyDeleteI think we should keep count of how many times Blue has died :D
ReplyDeleteIncluding "Bates Motel", it's already the third time.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, she wants to become Female!Sean Bean.
ReplyDeleteDid you intended the "bean" pun?
ReplyDeleteRumplestiltskin forever LOL
ReplyDeleteHe didn't have his heart,so the kiss felt devoid of any real emotion and/or feelings. That's what she sensed.
ReplyDeleteIt really was a perfect episode, especially the closing montage was breathtaking!Everyone from the actors to the creative team pulled an A+ job for this one!
ReplyDeleteThe episode felt like 'Going Home'. It was really amazing and it looked like the end is near, but we still have 2 episodes left. Like I said yesterday, my theory is that we'll se Anna & Kristoff's wedding in Storybrooke in the winter finale and Maleficent will interrupt the ceremony.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it really blew me away, it surpassed every single one of my expectations.
ReplyDeleteI thought this would be an episode that would be like filler for the following one; I couldn't have been more wrong and I'm really happy that I was!
It did have an air of 'Going Home', the closing montage has a striking resemblance to the moment the curse is hitting Storybrooke last season. And both were just outstanding
ReplyDeleteIt's a very good thing that she noticed, and I like that it was subtle: we could see her on Emma's eyes we didn't need a line or some exposition to know it. Jennifer Morrison really killed it in that scene!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a long time since I watched season 1! Maybe I should consider a re-watch.
ReplyDeleteIt makes sense, so I'll take your word for it. Thank you for the refresher! :)
I was so happy to see that Snow wasn't reduced to nursery plots or things like that this week and to see her like we haven't seen her this season. And I agree: putting aside her heart to heart two weeks ago with Regina I haven't been much of a fan of Snow lately, but I finally got to enjoy her character! And next week's it's gotta get increasingly interesting with Shattered Sight on display.
ReplyDeleteAnd Regina always get good lines, but this time the writers just made sure to take every chance to deliver a killer line, and I'm really happy they did!
I saw the episode in vo and i was deceived because i still don't have the answers to the questions important according to me. But i must admit english is not my first language so, i didn't understand all. But after, i realized that all those good characters do fear the curse and do fear the darkness they all know they have in their heart in a way or another. And this is terrible !
ReplyDeleteFor me it was beyond A+. I wanted to laugh and later, to cry. Everyone worrying about everyone, sinister Rumpl/Gold, flashbacks from Enchanted Forest/Arendelle after second curse and many many more.
ReplyDeletePERFECT EPISODE.
"(...) Anna & Kristoff's wedding in Storybrooke in the winter finale and Maleficent will interrupt the ceremony."
ReplyDeletei COUNT ON THAT. Her "Sorry I'm late" could be be beyond awesome and a reference to the very first episode of this TV series, from Regina at Snow White and Charming's wedding.
Just a great episode Hook doing Gold's dirty work so there was no cure. Emma chasing after Elsa. Elsa wishing Anna and somehow Kristoff came along too.
ReplyDeleteThe "somehow" was that Anna and Kristoff were holding hands when they were transported to Storybrooke. True love, and all that :)
ReplyDeleteI feel really badly for Hook. I hope they aren't aiming to get rid of anyone of the longer-term characters, but I think maybe Rumple is finally beyond any redemption. Willing to kill everyone in Storybrooke, so save his own ass (and wife/grandson). Would Bae approve? Wouldn't his death have been for no reason, if Rumple goes full-on "Dark Side" ?
ReplyDeleteWhat are your questions?
ReplyDelete(Frenchies around here? Salut ! :D)
Thats the thing, even though it was a great line, about him choosing himself all the time, it isn't true. He killed himself to get rid of Pan, so... WTH was that??? He can be selfless... So why not now?
ReplyDeleteI agree.
ReplyDeleteThis episode was very strong and filled with poignant moments and lines. For me the highlight was seeing how Regina fights with all her might to hold on to goodness. She was so scared. I don't think, we've ever seen her so scared before. And what makes the scenes so gut-wrenching is that what she's most scared of is herself. That last scene with Robin in the Mayor's office was just heartbreaking. And acting-wise, Lana Parrilla remains by far the strongest card OUAT has. IMO.
That would be fun... My problem right now is: How will they get rid of Elsa&co? We know they won't have Elsa be a regular, and technically no one knows if Arendelle still exists, or how to get back there, and they can't just "forget" they re there... I'm curious to see how they escape that.
ReplyDeleteOUAT has a very good cast overall, and during this episode Jennifer Morrison, Ginnifer Goodwin and Colin O'Donoghue all had outstanding moments to shine, but I agree that Lana Parrilla just came on top of them all. It is just amazing how good of a performance she makes. The whole cast is great, but she is in a whole other level
ReplyDeleteI think "Fall" has very good chances of becoming my all time favorite episode just because I feel absolutely everything works on every level. The lines, the pacing, the plot, the outsanding acting, the direction and the way it was shot, everything just lines up perfectly during this episode.
ReplyDeleteOUAT has had a good share of outstanding episodes, but I think this is the very first time where I've seen the show do everything -and I mean everything from writing, to acting to technical levels- right. I was really blown away and as of right now I'm just happy. Just thinking about the episode makes me smile. Truly a wonderful job
I think something went horribly wrong with him after Bae died; while he tried to be good at first I think he is starting to act out because of his death; ever since he killed Zelena we've seen him going on a darker path.
ReplyDeleteHis promise to Neal on his grave seems like a distant memory now. I think Rumple tried but the grief ultimatelt brought the worst of himself and he is walking a path of no redemption
Forgot to mention on the Star Observations: Anna and Elsa' parents bottle message is on the beach as of right now! How long until we find out what it says? My bet is that we'll know by the midseason finale
ReplyDeleteyes, you'd better know the season 1 by heart, Pablo : Emma is now in the same situation as her father in the pilot, a baby in her arms and a curse acoming ! ;-)
ReplyDeleteYou forgot one of the funniest lines: Anna to Hans: "We sang together!" I seriously cracked up when she said that.
ReplyDeleteArendelle still exist. This episode showed to us. There is only no king or queen in that realm.
ReplyDeleteTrue, it slipped my mind while writting the review!
ReplyDeleteI'm coming to love this episode more and more by the minute! It's just amazing!
It is an excellent parallel. OUAT really did an outstanding job during this episode (and season overall). I don't think I've ever been more excited about the show!
ReplyDeleteI bet whatever she wrote is the clue to breaking the spell!
ReplyDeleteI avoid the promos for obvious reasons,so i was in for complete surprise as to what to expect!
ReplyDeleteI would assume so, since the Frozen stuff should be finished as of the midseason finale...at least I hope it is. This was definitely the best episode of the season so far as there was constant action instead of people standing around wondering what they should do...I hope the next two are just as good. It is what seems to be happening with these split season story lines - the first 75% of episodes builds background and are mostly boring (I mean, wandering aimlessly around Neverland last year for like 8 episodes was ridiculously dull) and then we finally get a few great episodes for the payoff. I just wish they could find a way to spread the excitement throughout the seasons a bit better. It's like they are writing a 12-hour movie and feel all the excitement goes in the denouement instead of giving us a bit of that excitement along the way.
ReplyDeleteThat's a very smart choice; I happen to be very impatient and I want to know what's going to happen next so badly that I can't help myself most times, but I think going into an episode without any expectation given by promos is the best choice since you are diving into the episode just willing to recieve whatever the episode brings
ReplyDeleteI agree, OUAT writers have a very unbalance pacing with their episodes: some are great, some are ok and some other are just boring. This is one of the great ones, and it builds a lot of momentum for the remaining ones.
ReplyDeleteNeverland was an OK arc as a whole, but very underwhelming because, as you said, there was a lot of roaming around aimlessly, so I think the Frozen arc did a major imrpovement on that. So far the season had a couple of missteps, but as a whole I find that they have made a good job writting it and as of right now we are getting to a pretty awesome climax. I hope they keep the momentum they built!
I know what you mean.I did the same thing for TVD season 5 and ended up unsatisfied after every single episode except the finale. So,this year i have stopped watching any sneak peeks, promos, advance previews which can spoil anything & it's working like magic!
ReplyDeleteI agree....I thought the same thing during the show - that we've never really seen Regina that scared. Not even when Henry was dying in the first season. Although, I think she loves him (knows how to love him) more now than she did back then...
ReplyDeleteThere were some high points and funny moments and quotes in this episode.. Regina's humour was definitely at its best (I had to laugh at the "munchkin" comment), Unfortunattely, I'm still not a huge fan of half-season. The plot was OK,...it just dragged on forever and there weren't enough interesting sidestories as fillers. Also, ending with a new curse as a cliffhanger has become far too redundant,
ReplyDeleteThe Good:
-Elsa and Anna reuniting. Also, I'm hoping the message in the bottle is from their pareints.
-The Emma/Hook moments, although they were very bittersweet
-The touching moments between Emma and the Charmings. I also loved when Emma asked Elsa to holder her little brother....it's rare to hear her call him that.
The Bad
-Yet another curse and a boring one at that....They really need to come up with new major plots. I was actually hoping that they'd be able to get out of Storybrooke, because that would really take the show in a much needed new direction
-The weak writing for Belle's character, who seems to be relegated to just playing Gold's trusting wife.
-Robin Hood, I know people like that Regina found love, but the circumstances under which it happened were just so wrong Robin's complete lack of regard for his wife (whom he supposedly loved) makes me really dislike his character. I guess I should be happy that he remembered that he had a son for 2 seconds this episode, except for the fact that he prioritized being with Regina over staying with his son....
My guess is that Elsa, Anna & Kristoff will return to Arendelle and they'll live happily ever after. haha
ReplyDeleteA question trouble me... Without heart, Hook could be affect by the spell ?
ReplyDeleteVery good question, we will find out next week. My guess is that he won't be affected, but I may be wrong
ReplyDeleteI loved this episode.I really like this Frozen arc.
ReplyDeleteElsa and Anna reunion was great. Ingrid freezing Arendelle during 30 years is a good and logical way to connect the flashbacks with the present. It's also interesting that Blackbeard is still alive.I think he's going to appear in more episodes.
I feel sorry for Hook. I didn't like what he did with the fairies but he didn't have a choice.I hope he won't die (Emma can't have that bad luck with her boyfriends) because I love his character. But this just proves that Rumplestinskin is beyond redemption.I think he's going to lose everything(and for everything I mean Belle) because of his craving for power.
The end of the episode was awesome and scary.I'd love to see Charmings fighting.
"Unfortunately, I'm still not a huge fan of this half-season. The plot was OK, but it just dragged on forever and there weren't enough interesting side-stories as fillers. Also, ending with a new curse as a cliffhanger has become far too redundant"
ReplyDeleteYou do realize that there's still 2 more episodes before the finale right?
LOL. That's true. Somehow I keep thinking of it as the end, because it seems like their typical cliffhanger. But I've reached the point where I'm ready for this particular plot to come to an end.
ReplyDeleteI thought this episode was really good too, especially the end. Emma, Snow, David, and Hook really brought it. Hook's sadness and guilt and the Charming family's panic was palpable. I'm super excited to see Snow and Charming go at it because according to Josh Dallas, Charming is really harsh with her. It is a great way to bring some drama to that relationship. I was a little annoyed with the middle, where it seemed to drag concerning Elsa and her sister. I thought Emma did a good job though of trying to be understanding but also trying to get Elsa moving because they have a town to save.
ReplyDeleteNow, onto what I consider the Rumple/Belle/Hook/Emma inevitable blowup. I feel like the writers were really showcasing the difference between Rumple and Hook in this episode. Hook has done horrible things, but they all stemmed from love. His love for her brother, his love for Milah, his love for Emma and trying to be better for her. I forget the line exactly, but Hook says something like "you could have Belle forever or power", and Rumple says he can have both. Hook doesn't understand Rumple, because to him Rumple already has everything Hook could ever want.
Now this may get confusing, so I apologize in advance but considering Hook is told he has a day to live, I'm assuming that adds up to one episode? And since I'm convinced they aren't killing off his character and OUAT finales are usually everyone dealing with the aftermath of the previous episode/part setting up the next dilemma, would that mean the curse is fixed during this next episode and Emma finally figures out that he doesn't have a heart by the end of it? That would mean then they would spend the midseason finale saving Hook, giving us the classic OUAT happy ending while also putting the pieces in place for a very pissed off and destructive Rumple come 4B? Honestly, I don't care as long as by the end of the midseason finale Emma at least knows Hook doesn't have his heart and makes a declaration to fight for it. Poor guy needs to hear that. And Belle standing up for herself and leaving Rumple would just be the icing on the cake.
I really like your ideas and hope that we get that as well.! I really want to see Belle kick some Rumple a____! I want to see her as a strong character not as the weak one that I feel they have portrayed her as this season. She stood up and said that she accepted Rumple as the flawed character he was but this to me is beyond beyond. I want CS to finally get some satisfaction and not have a new threat or something at every corner-one step forward-six steps back. I want to see Emma tell Killian she loves him and Killian tell her the same back. We have waited so long to hear this words and this episode disappointed me that we didn't at least get that this time, with Hook thinking he would die. And I totally agree that there is a huge difference between Hook and Rumple and this showed that. Hook would do anything for those he cares about, including sacrificing himself but Rumple would not-at least not this season!
ReplyDeleteBelle kicking some Rumple butt or tricking him like he tricked her to help Hook would be so great. I was always a fan of Rumple and Belle, but this show is about strong, smart women and what they've done to Belle's character isn't fair. Yes, it is beautiful how much she loves and trusts him, I think they've shown that enough though, now it is time for Rumple to get what he deserves for his actions. I have a feeling this is going to be what happens because the producers said Belle would do something heroic and brave in the finale.
ReplyDeleteAs for the I Love You's, I am hoping they have held back on that because it's going to be a truly epic moment. I thought he'd maybe say it in his voicemail confession (not that she'd hear it, but we would have!) or during their goodbye, but maybe they don't want him to say it when he doesn't have his heart. Given this is OUAT, while they may torture us for awhile, we usually get the cheesy happy ending we're all rooting for. I'm just holding out for that!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to be sad when the Frozen arc ends, I want to keep Elsa and Anna forever. Can I swap them for Hook, please? He is the one character that I don't care about and think that his usefulness expired somewhere at the end of 3A. Alas, my wish will not be granted. But hey, at least Blue is gone!(?) I cannot wait for everything to blow up in Rumple's face. A sentimental part of me wishes he'd finally see that him having a fixation on power is EXACTLY what gets people around him killed, and that Neal didn't die for the man Rumple is right now. The more realistic part of me that cackles with evil glee hopes that Belle realises that Rumple is beyond saving and that no matter how much he loves her (or how much she loves him), he will choose power and himself, every time.
ReplyDeleteWell, I do get his paranoia and anger - he did spend the majority of 3B locked up in Zelena's cage (what was that, circa six months?) AND his kid died, sacrificing himself for Rumple, for a man Rumple is not exactly sure that exists. (Which is part of the problem, Rumple does not acknowledge that he is capable of doing good things that Belle and Neal see.) So I get why he's so obsessed with getting rid of the dagger's hold on him - he doesn't want a repeat of Zelena. But DAMNIT, he goes about fixing his problems in the exact wrong way. Scheming against everyone is an insult to Neal's memory. But mostly it's just a dumb move, after three seasons Rumple should have realised that the only reason people in Storybrooke always magically win is because they work together. And perhaps Rumple is an asshole that no one would like to help, but they'd do it. For Belle and for Henry. And for Neal.
ReplyDeleteTo each his/her own. I much preferred the Regina/Cora arc, but Regina is, by far, my favorite character, so I find most of the episodes that don't place her front and center boring...or at least not among my favorites. At least she's been getting some good zingers in this half, but I sure hope she has a more prominent role coming up in the second half of this season.
ReplyDeleteIn "Dreamy" he made it clear that he hated the nuns/fairies was happy to have an excuse to evict "such unpleasant tenants". It's presumably because of Blue's involvement in his son being lost.
ReplyDelete
