David Ayer is writing and directing the movie

Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto are officially set to star in Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. announced Tuesday.

Also cast in the movie based on the DC Entertainment villains-forced-to-be-heroes are Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne.

Much of the castings have been previously reported but the studio also confirmed which characters the actors will play.

Smith will play Deadshot, best known as a Batman villain, while Hardy the group’s leader, Rick Flagg.

Leto will take on the Joker while Robbie will play Harley Quinn, his on-and-off girlfriend. Courtney will be Boomerang while Delevingne will play Enchantress.

The movie has a release date of Aug. 5, 2016.

Warners still has the role of Amanda Waller, the character who oversees the team (similarly to Nick Fury in the Marvel universe), to cast before the film goes into production. The studio’s shortlist of actresses being eyed for the role includes Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey, whom sources say would be WB’s first choice for the part.

  4. Interest intensifies! Jared Leto as Joker? AHHHHHH! I LOVE IT! Margot Robbie as Harley? LOVE IT TOO!

DC is taking big names! Affleck, Leto, Robbie, Smith, etc... Hope the writing delivers along the direction.

You can have the best cast and director, but if your script is garbage then you can't do much.

  7. this is an amazing cast i can't wait to see this team of supervillains become superheroes, wow Will Smith as Deadshot and Harley Quinn that is so AWESOME and the Joker surprised he's part of the team

  8. Yeah he did but for a lot of the movie he had the mouth piece on so some people might not notice I suppose :) Marvel did it with Chris Evans, he was Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four and now he's Captain America :)

  10. Viola Davis would make a very compelling Amanda Waller

  11. nope

Will Smith lost me as a fan after forcing his kid into Karate Kid. And let's not forget that his acting has gotten worse in between his longer absence and MIB 3....after After Earth I can't look at him anymore.

Leto as the Joker? I'm fine with that, he's great

Jai Courtney RUINED the last Die Hard for me....

    Robbie I'm fine with

  12. Jai Courtney was Varro. So, I have a soft spot for him. :)

    "Robbie I'm fine with"

    Who isn't? ;) :)

  13. I still haven't seen Spartacus so I can't judge him on that performance.

I've seen him in I, Frankenstein, A Good Day to Die Hard and Divergent
While Divergent was just a crapfest it was pretty obvious that Courtney really paled next to Aaron Eckhart and Bruce Willis.

sure she's hot and I'm okay with that and Jared Leto is one of the few actors I actually get why they were given an oscar.

Overall the film doesen't look to become one with standout performances though

  14. Angela Basset played her in Green Lantern. I guess we'll hear more on that casting choice when DC has decided to in- or exclude Green Lantern from the DCCU

  15. Wow! Brilliant casting Will Smith and Rom Hardy are excellent choices and i am very happy that Margot Robbie is going to be in the movie as well.

  16. I don't like any of this casting at all. I like a few of the actors so I'll just hope for the best. I am not waiting on pins and needles for this like I am for all things Marvel.

  17. She will be great as Harley. Nice cast tbh

  18. Only casting I'm happy about here is Margot Robbie as Harley, because if anyone was going to smash that role, it'd be her. The rest, Meh! I HATE Jared Leto, so him as the Joker has really put me off this film. Cara, I've yet to form a real opinion on, but Enchantress has never been that interesting of a character to me. I do like Tom and Jai (DH4 aside) but again, Boomerang has never really interested me, and Tom could do so much better than Rick Flagg. And the less I say about Will Smith the better. Also not Oprah! Anyone but Oprah! Viola, or bring back Angela Bassett! But basically, I'll see this for Margot as Harley, and no other reason. But I'll never stop wishing Marvel had bagged her for the Carol Danvers movie.

  19. Will Smith in an ensemble movie? Has this happened before?

  20. Jared Leto will be awesome as the Joker. He not only researches the roles he plays, but he also really gets into them. Most times, it's hard to tell it really is Jared Leto. He's actually a very good actor.

  21. I didn't catch her in Green lantern. I guess I didn't spot her.

  22. Don't go to Jared Leto's instagram account. He quotes himself and he sounds worse than Jaden Smith.

  23. I'm excited and not excited because I'm so used to Arrow's "Suicide Squad", but I'm interested to see how the movie will portray it.

  25. You can't cast the one actor to play two different villains in same universe of movies. That makes no sense to me. DC really needs to get their crap together.

  26. He is now and he always will be Jordan Catalono to me. Poor guy.
