Just got word from a trusted source of mine over at Disney that sometime within the last week or so, Sony Japan and Sony Pictures renegotiated a deal with Marvel Studios. Nothing has been made 100% official yet, and the final decision is still set to be made in January at Sony's "Spidey Summit", but all of the plans are now in place. If Sony agrees to the deal, Marvel will then hold creative control over future Spidey films while Sony gets a share of the profits he makes, with marketing and distribution rights for all standalone films.
Spider-Man would be joining the MCU in a small but important cameo in Cap 3, with the first movie of a new franchise already being prepped for a 2018 release date. Marvel plans on skipping the origin story altogether for the first film and will jump right into Spider-Man being a hero for a few years, likely in college or just afterwards.
Marvel has already begun development on the script, and has begun looking at potential directors for the Spider-Man reboot. Marvel will not be bringing Andrew Garfield onboard, but has talked to him separately about possibly joining Marvel for another role in a future film of theirs.
Marvel already has a shortlist of actors in mind for the Peter Parker role that includes: Anton Yelchin, Dylan O'Brien, Freddie Highmore, Thomas Mann, Logan Lerman, Michael Angarano, Douglas Booth, Nat Wolff, and Skandar Keynes.

So I got a little bit more details out of my Disney guy. Nothing is concrete yet, but I may know what villain Marvel wants for their first Spidey movie. The two being seriously considered are Mysterio and/or Shocker. Not clear on if it's both or just one, but I've been told Marvel is aiming to avoid any mistakes made in previous Spider-Man films, which I assume would include multiple villains, so I'm fairly sure they're deciding between one of the two. There's also talk of possibly bringing in Vincent D'Onofrio from their upcoming Daredevil show as Kingpin for the villain as well.
One more thing my source gave me is that one of the names he's heard being tossed around as a possible director is Sylvain White. However, there are dozens of other directors being looked at as well, so this could end up being meaningless.

Poor Andrew Garfield but spiderman belongs to the MCU Sony completely ruined it with their horrendous ideas I'm waiting to see what marvel does yay for Spidey in civil war that's awesome!

ReplyDeleteAlso my vote goes to either Dylan or Freddie with Michael as my preferred choice. Michael could probably pull off Ultimate Spider-Man's look pretty easily. But more importantly those 3 have all done TV in the past few years.
The important cameo is probably Spider-Man unmasking, but I think it would carry a greater impact if we saw him having to hide his identity first. Include him in season 3 of Agents of Shield which then leads to him transitioning to movies when he unmasks during the Civil War.
The Spider-Man movies afterwards can then deal with the fallout since his identity is now public which adds a different spin on things.
Please drop Spider Man. There was enough remake on this character. Simply boring like dared devil, Batman, Superman. Enough is Enough. Marvel should just move on with " Avengers".

Andrew Garfield was a great Peter Parker/Spiderman. I wonder how they will incorporate him in the MCU. They could do the Spiderverse Storyline and add Miles Morales, Spiderman 2099 and others.

ReplyDeleteMan, that would be so awesome. Sad for Andrew though, as I personally really love him as an actor, but if it is true he hopefully gets an awesome other role -if he wants to. Dylan would just be as excited to play Spiney as Andrew was, so if they want to go older/after college I could also imagine Anton :)

ReplyDeleteNot sure about Garfield playing another role on MCU, but he's really good and do not deserve to lose his biggest character over Sony's incompetence, so at least he's getting another chance.
ReplyDeleteI didn't hate TASM2 as much as I'd expect to, and would like a third part so the reboot could get some closure, but Civil War will be way cooler with Spidey in it.
Dylan O'Brien is perfect for the role and I'm rooting for him, but I love Anton Yelchin as well and would love to see him playing other characters in the movies. Someone mentioned Dave Franco as Peter, too, and it could be interesting.
Logan Lerman looks like a kid. I could see Douglas but idk. Maybe Jake Gyllenhaal (he's too old but whatever) or Justin Bartha.
ReplyDeleteYAAAAASSSSS! Hope this is true. Sucks for Andrew Garfield, who was a great Spiderman, but Sony has no clue what they're doing with Spidey. Plus, its impossible to make an expanded universe for just Spiderman when all the characters are reliant on his presence.

ReplyDeleteAs long as they bring Spider Man along with MCU, I'll be happy. I actually haven't seen The Amazing Spiderman - they didn't look like Spider Man at its best so I avoided it - so I don't have a strong attachment to Andrew Garfield. I'm in for anyone who would like to play the role (though I obviously hope they cast someone good)

ReplyDeleteDylan O'Brien, i wouldn't be mad if it was him... I haven't seen him on anything besides Teen Wolf and it't the best of the show. He had a hit with Maze Runner so it's a very likely choice. He also has a big fanbase, hasn't he?
Because Spider-Man is one of Marvel's flagship characters. Having him be able to join the MCU gets us access to Spidey in the Avengers, solo spidey films with the Marvel touch (usually well produced and very well recieved), cameos from other fan favorite characters and an end to Oscorp creating EVERYTHING in TASM movies.

Too bad getting rid of Garfield is a necessary evil for Marvel to get the rights to Spidey back. I really like him in the role. It would be the best of both worlds if Marvel continued the current franchise with Garfield.

ReplyDeleteI've always wanted Logan Lerman as Spider-Man, so out of those he would be my first choice. A few other actors up there would do well also. If they cast Dylan O'Brien, that'll garuntee me not seeing any Spider-Man solo films, he's good in Teen Wolfe, it over rated in general if you ask me. As for the people complaining about Lerman looking too young/boyish... Isn't that a big part of Spider-Man in comics?

Well he played him less like an akward social outcast and more like a grungy emo kid that was actually pretty popular. And let's not forget that instead of snappy humor he was pretty much mean spirited towards people.
