Gracepoint - Cancelled

5 Dec 2014

With next week's season finale of Gracepoint being promoted as the "series finale", FOX has effectively cancelled Gracepoint. Though the show was eyed as a "event series" by FOX, there was an option for the show to return for a second season had the ratings been better.

  1. So they basically admit they would have milked this dry if it had better ratings? I just hate how the networks throw around terms like "event series" and then don't commit to it. An option for a sophomore season pretty much makes this an ordinary series with a limited episode order.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I'm not surprised. For the most part, the acting is crap and it hasn't been a very good show. That said, I will watch the finale just to see If I'm right about who killed Danny.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Maybe networks will now stop re-making British series that are only a year or two old!
It's very rare a series a decade or more old works when remade , but a current series being remade will never work.

    ReplyDelete
  4. This was technically a limited series, which refers to the episode order not being the full 22, as opposed to it being one season only. Networks can call it an "event series" all they like, but it's still a limited series.

  5. Be glad you didn't watch broadchurch then!I couldn't watch this coz i knew who the killer was from the start!

    ReplyDelete
  6. There was hardly any doubt!

    ReplyDelete
  7. I didn't even realize there was an option for a second season. I thought it was only meant to be 1 season.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Wasn't the British version cancelled after one or two seasons as well? How is it ever a good idea to bring a show to the US when it wasn't even successful to begin with? David Tennant was my drawl to the show but even he couldn't save it.

    ReplyDelete
  9. No one saw this coming lol.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Broadchurch got renewed for a second season. The second season hasn't premiered yet.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The British version was one of the most acclaimed series of the past decade! It was VERY successful. Season 2 is in production and will air in 2015.

    ReplyDelete
  12. There have been soooo many red herrings on Gracepoint but I believe I have it figured out. I'm just watching to see if I'm right. I'll take your word on Broadchurch. I had considered watching it but now I won't.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'll stick with Broadchurch.....It was better anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  14. What I read was wrong and I stand corrected.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Erm, FOX said from the beginning that Gracepoint would have a different ending. But if the killer turns out to be Tom in Gracepoint too, I've going to throw something.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Well, FOX is already developing a Luther remake, so seems like they haven't learned.

    ReplyDelete
  17. No worries.
I'm in the USA so I know how hard ti can be to know UK ratings or reviews etc...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Luther only had about a dozen episodes didn't it? They had short seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeah not shocked considering the ratings. Hope Anna Gunn gets another show soon and well David will be OK he has the British version to fall back on.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Right..
In there defense that was in production before this cancellation, but....
That series is likely to fail as well!

Idris Elba makes Luther what it is and having him as Executive Producer and not hte star will not be the same.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yep, well 14 I guess technically.
Six the first season then 4 episodes in the second and third season.
I forget how many the upcoming mini-series will have...

    ReplyDelete
  22. But Gracepoint's ratings sucked from the get-go.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I can't remember the source, but what I read said that David Tennant moved to Gracepoint because Broadchurch had been cancelled. Maybe they were idiots that didn't check details or maybe they were confused about him leaving the show and moving to Gracepoint. Either way, it's nice to know what's actually up. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm not really arguing in their favor! XD
I was confused by the first news of the Luther reboot!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I know that.I really doubt about changing the killer though!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Were the circumstances the same in the British version because I can't figure out why Joe would want to kill Danny? I assumed it was his son, Tom, and that Joe just covered it up.

    ReplyDelete
  27. No one is surprised by this but i enjoyed David and Anna.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Confess that I enjoyed this show a little bit despite the poor acting from most actors.
It could've been a better show If it hasn't copied Broadchurch so much.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I really hope the killer is different, but it doesn't seem like it, ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I didn't watch Broadchurch, but from wikipedia: Joe confesses to strangling Danny after the boy threatened to expose the inappropriate attachment Joe had with him.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm totally confused by this. I didn't even know there was talks of a possible second season as this always seemed like just some mini-series type of event.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well, Broadchurch was renewed, so there is no doubt that FOX would have renewed Gracepoint had it done better.

    ReplyDelete
  33. but their ratings were SO OUTSTANDING! It's FOXs Reign!
They can't cancel such an amizingly recieved show

    ReplyDelete
  34. I thought it was said that Gracepoint aren't doing things exactly like Broadchurch?

    ReplyDelete
  35. It was a limited series, so it could be renewed.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, I read the episode summaries of Broadchurch, and apart from the "Tom Miller going missing" storyline, everything else is the same. I'm, really really hoping that the killer is different.

    ReplyDelete
  37. This^ Look at the press release for the CBS mini series the Dovekeepers. CBS calls it a "limited event series" even though it is a 4 hour miniseries. Limited series and event series are just network speak for cable length seasons for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Think American Horror Story, True Detective or Fargo, the show could have done an entirely new cast for season 2. Or Anna Gunn could have returned with a mostly new cast for a reboot in season 2 since Tenant would probably have been too busy but the show is cancelled so it does not matter.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The original announcement PR from a year ago says "miniseries", which is what it is. The amount of PR nonsense around nowadays... don't believe it.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Exactly. I don't get why the networks insist on using "event series" and "limited series" interchangeably despite being two different things.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yep. Stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Well that's creepy and gross. I never saw that coming since it was Tom who was deleting stuff off of his own phone and computer. I thought it was him. I wonder if it will be the same on Gracepoint. Guess I'll have to stay tuned to find out. Thanks, Babar.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I am not sure that they really are two different things. Limited series is cable length series. Event series to me is the networks using a different term to try to get more live viewers. Event series does not mean mini series at least by how the networks are using the term. I would agree that it is just PR nonsense to try to get more live viewers, but the networks are free to spin things anyway they want and I am sure AMC could call The Walking Dead an event series if they wanted to.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I thought it was Tom as well when I watched Broadchurch. Gracepoint is changing the killer but it seems that the hard drive will be when Carver realizes who the killer is, so it seems that there can only be two possible killers left.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ahhh, okay. That sorta makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
  47. So am I since I didn't watch Broadchurch and this would be a major spoiler for me.

    ReplyDelete
  48. This comes to the surprise of... absolutely no one.

    ReplyDelete
  49. No surprise here. As a fan of the original I really wanted to give this a chance, but after struggling through the first 3 episodes, I gave up. I'm anxiously awaiting for Broadchurch, though.

    ReplyDelete
  50. They were going to do another season if the ratings were better? What were they going to do, kill off another kid to make another mystery? I mean, c'mon FOX, it's called a 10-part series for a reason, right? Just leave it at that.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Second half the season they switched up things in BC the store owner died in episode 7 and danny's phone was discovered by tracing the call signal which lead to Joe's arrest.

In GP danny's phone was found in the fisherman house

    ReplyDelete
  52. The timelines don't add up exactly between BC and GP lol

    ReplyDelete
  53. Second season will focus on the town more and there reaction after danny's murderer was brought to justice.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Never watched Gracepoint, figured it will get cancelled and now it's cancelled. Stoked for Series 2 of Broadchurch.

    ReplyDelete
  55. This was a copy of a british series call Broadchurch (Though I believe they are choosing a different killer). Their series are typically 3 to 10 episode per season. It was interesting to see Tenant in the same role in both but without the English accent in this one.

    ReplyDelete
  56. They are having a different killer in this one.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I hope so.Even though they've said it would be a different one,i really doubt it somehow.

    ReplyDelete

No surprises. Bad idea, poorly acted, particularly by the leads (Gunn and Tennant were appalling throughout), poorly written and dragged out beyond the limits of toleration. Surely nobody could have thought this could stretch to a second series once the first episode was aired and was greeted with the derision it deserved. Good riddens.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Not surprised. I have an eerie feeling, the Luther remake may do similar numbers

    ReplyDelete
  60. Joe said he was in love with Danny.

Hope that David Tennant can find a better show. That will better showcase his talents.

    ReplyDelete
  62. The show was okay enough but it wasn't anywhere close to an "event". I hope they don't screw up Luther but they probably will.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Strange as on Gracepoint ep 8 review on Tvovermind you overpraised Anna Gunn (as always you just bashing on David Tennant, the object of your hate and your obsession)..btw in the same post you named yourself Helen Woodful before changing 2 hours later in Edward delingford (you have a problem of gender?) after someone answered you http://www.tvovermind.com/review/gracepoint-season-1-episode-8-review-episode-eight-245333

    ReplyDelete
  64. Same here. Cannot imagine how another murder in such a small town would be realistic for another season. Season-long murder mystery series never do well on TV due to our short attention spans. Too many characters and details to remember for very long. Hard to keep story lines fresh and twists believable. As for "Grace Point", I can't believe they would have an obvious killer unless there was a surprise motive, which is unlikely. I'll be disappointed if there isn't an unexpected twist. I believe Vince helped Tom cover up the crime and Tom killed him. I wonder if it was out of anger, rejected love, or both disagreeing over how to respond to sexual abuse (hence computer evidence). Hmmmm......

    ReplyDelete
  65. We will soon find out if it works when Broadchuch premieres its second season. I have no idea how that will work with the same cast and crew, it will be interesting to see what they do with it. As for Gracepoint I'm am still set on the killer being Paul.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Just looked up Broadchurch. Doubt they will have a different twist/culprit but looking back I can say, "aaaaaah!" and smile knowingly. Kinda like reading the last chapter early but maybe.... just maybe.....

Did you realize Law & Order: UK is actually one of the rare, if not only, American show adapted in the UK? Some of the first season story lines were modified from early L&O episodes. It is interesting to see the similarities and differences between the two systems. Worth checking out if you haven't. (sorry for the unsolicited spam)

    ReplyDelete
  67. I will be disappointed if Gracepoint ends with the same killer as Broadchurch's, as not only would it not make much sense it would also pretty much mean I have been watching the same show again.

I haven't seen Law and Order, I have actually started to distance myself from crime drama's, as I find that they all share a lot of similarities. I may watch it one day, but not anytime soon.

I guess I'll have to watch broadchurch to see what happens, because personally I don't think he was about to molest Danny what I think was really going on is Danny was going to tell his mother that he knew who his real father was and I think Tom showed up at the wrong time and accidentally killed Danny which he did. What I think is this idiot is willing to go to prison for a crime he didn't do just to cover up an affair he had 13 years ago. The reason I say this if you remember Tom's mother & father and Danny's mother & father and with the prest were all close friends all through their childhoods into adults to think some screwing around didn't happen

didn't you hear he is going back to playing the doctor on Doctor Who right after he finishes seasons 2 of Broadchurch.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Anna Gunn was solid, but their chemistry together wasn't an improvement to Tennant & Coleman in Broadchurch for me. Overall directing, cast and the overall flow of Broadchurch felt more genuine compared to the FOX version.

    ReplyDelete
  71. The show started looking like the 'Killing' but after the four episodes, it had its own pace and turned out very good.
