CBS is taking another stab at expanding its popular Criminal Minds franchise. The network is developing a new spin-off series that will first air as an episode of Criminal Minds in February.
If ordered to series, it would become the second planted spin-off from Criminal Minds. The first, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, aired in 2011 but was canceled after a single season
Criminal Minds executive producer Erica Messer will write the episode and executive produce with Mark Gordon and Nick Pepper. The episode (and subsequent series) will focus on a division of the FBI that helps Americans in trouble abroad.

Oh you silly network.
ReplyDeleteMmm. CBS trying to turn Criminal Minds into the next CSI?
ReplyDeleteUgh! No! Because this worked so well when they did Suspect Behavior...
ReplyDeletePlease god don't let them cut funding for the parent show again. Surely they wouldn't be stupid enough to cut cast again.
And on a side note - I'd still like some sort of resolution to the Suspect Behavior cliffhanger. Even if it's only Garcia mentioning it in one line on the parent show.
Cbs loves their procedural and spinoffs
ReplyDeleteThey already have the unofficial spinoff with Stalker.
ReplyDeleteYou can't blame CBS for milking their cash cows but Criminal Minds seems like a cash calf more than anything. In saying that, I thought Suspect Behavior was pretty good really, but given the universal decline in ratings across broadcast networks, Criminal Minds will dip into the high 1s next year, and spinoffs rarely, if ever, rate better than their parent series.
ReplyDeleteThinking about this some more, if they really want to do a spin-off that focuses on Americans in trouble abroad the main character should be Prentiss since she's already overseas. It would be a much bigger hit than Suspect Behavior was since the audience is already familiar and love her. The only hard part would be getting Paget to sign on after how CBS have treated her.
ReplyDeleteI hate to bash on CBS, but I am beginning to lose my respect for the network. Their programming should be creative, not repetitive. They should be more invested in shows that provides a different dynamic than another one. It brings out the lack of effort that they put into non-spin-off shows and the laziness in creating spin-offs. This move with Criminal Minds is not only a slap to the face for shows like Stalker, but also one to the viewers and the network themselves.
ReplyDeleteEventually, everyone will be immune to the spin-off bug and no one will be interested in them. Also, I believe that if a show has a failed spin-off, it sets up a precedence that another spin-off will most likely not succeed as well.
Sorry for ranting. Just sharing my opinion.
You know what this mean, A.J. Cook will be fired again.
ReplyDelete"if ever": The Flash
ReplyDeleteCould probably take it further with The Simpsons. Technically they're a spinoff from The Tracey Ullman Show.
ReplyDeleteSo apparently they learned nothing from Suspect Behavior. Haven't watched CM in years as it became too gruesome to watch. I think Stalker would have been a better spinoff.
ReplyDeleteThe Flash isn't a normal example though because it is based on comics and is more popular in the comics than its mothership.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, because the first one was such a success!! *rolleyes*
ReplyDeleteBetter not happen :( but I can't help but being worrying of exactly this (since it's CBS after all) anyway, even my worry aside this spin-off should not happen. I honestly don't think you can recapture what made CM awesome (those characters, that team/family dynamic I honestly feel it's very unique [and quite character driven] show and can't be replicated by CBS).
ReplyDeletewell why not join the crowd.. everybody else has loads and I mean loads...so really who didn't see that coming lol
ReplyDeleteCBS, the spinoff wh*re.
ReplyDeleteWORST IDEA EVER!!! There, I said. They did the exact same thing exactly 5 years ago and look at well that turn out. CM: SB was IMO an awful, awful series, and in the process to make it two actresses of the main series got fired and it almost completely ruined the show, and to some it really did. Even though they managed to bring back both AJ and Paget (who was forced to return by CBS) the show was never as good as it was before all that s--t happened. I wonder if they're going to fire someone this year if the spin-off gets a series order. I'm with Paget, best wishes to all the ladies who work on CM, God knows if they'll all still be there if CM gets a new season and the spin-off happens.
ReplyDeleteWell, since the last one worked out so well... On the other hand, a lot of shows on CBS are spin-offs and somehow they manage to gain audience, maybe this one will too.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I didn't think Suspect Behavior was that bad. The characters may not have gelled as nicely as the Mothership's crew does, but that doesn't necessarily mean the show itself is bad, sometimes it just takes a little bit of time to learn the characters and get comfortable with them.
ReplyDeleteI will say though, I don't feel they casted Suspect Behavior correctly. I don't have anybody specific in mind for casting, but the group they had, I feel wouldn't have worked.
Really!? Why don't networks just focus on producing some new concept shows and stop creating spawn after spawn of the same old crime shows that the audience can predict the plot from a mile away. We already had all the variations of CSI and while some of them did okay some of them did not and it was pretty obvious they lacked what the original had. I feel like if done wrong and there is a lot of potential here for it to be done wrong this could go terrible. NCIS did the same thing and one of theirs got cancelled I'm pretty sure. We already had a NCIS:Red we don't need another one plus they still have that New Orleans version going for god knows how long.
ReplyDeleteJust saying if I want to watch a version of Criminal Minds I want the Reid/Morgan/Hotch/Garcia etc version not some new version with new characters whose personalities very closely shadow the personalities of the original characters in the first show.
Then they wonder why their shows get cancelled...
