This episode marked the end of Hotch and Beth's long distance relationship. It also featured a pretty messed up family reunion. It was pretty interesting to watch, actually. Not bad for the fall finale of the show I have loved so much for so long, although it has disappointed me recently. Anyway, let's get right to the review.

What an eerie introduction. A guy set a car on fire to the tune of a Christmas carol of sorts. Well, we did not learn much about the logistics of this crime at this time, but this scene was certainly lacking in Christmas spirit. Next, we have a nice Hotch and Rossi scene. "You and Beth broke up. I got a 20 year old bottle of scotch that you could drown your sorrows in." I love Rossi more than words can describe. Hotch finally told Rossi that him and Beth broke up. Rossi suggested, "What about online dating? [...] Bad idea." I have so many things to say about Hotch and Beth's break-up, most of which are angry rants. Why are they breaking up? Because you can't get Bellamy Young back on the show because she's busy with Scandal? Has that ever stopped you before? Hotch and Beth were just fine with their relationship until now. There was no reason to break them up! Either way, Rossi wants Hotch to be social and be his wingman. I gotta admit, I love the idea of Rossi and Blake being together. I guess I have to get over it, because Rossi seems to be making some new friends. Next up is a conversation between the unsub (Unknown Subject) and his friend, maybe? "You are leaving a trail of bodies because you can't keep it together." "Have you ever looked death in the eye? 'Cause I have. And I've seen the Grim Reaper staring right at me." The friend is being considered as a partner. Interesting.

Amelia Porter has been introduced to us as the partner of our unsub. The fact that we know who the unsub within the first 10 minutes of the episode is unnerving. We were learning a lot of background information about the unsub at this point, although I was quite distracted because of the early reveal. All I remembered during this time was that Amelia Porter = bad news. Then, we go to Garcia. "Garcia's the name, the 4-11's the game." The writers can never run out of quirky and flirty things for Garcia to say when she picks up the phone. Now, we get some insight on the unsub and his family. Hey, Garcia said Amelia fled to Canada. It's always so lovely to get my home country mentioned on this show. And later on in the episode they mentioned the province Winnipeg. How utterly delightful. Next, Morgan, Reid, and JJ went to go see Benton's father. "Head's up guys, I've got a real bad feeling about this." Uh oh, looks like his father is dead. I like how they tired to get victimology from the crime scene. I like how they used flashbacks to tell the story of the crime and the unsub. I also like how they explained that Andy might actually have empathy for Benton. Andy got pulled over because his tail light was out. I found it peculiar that the cop who pulled them over was unaware of who was in that car.

Hmmm, this episode kind of reminds me of Elephant's Memory (3x16), only a bit weirder. I can see some similarities between Benton and Owen Savage, although there are some differences too. Oh well, back to the show! After much riffraff, Andy crashed the car in the hopes that this would kill Benton. Benton, who was onto Andy, decided to shoot Andy and a helpful civilian who approached them on the street. Well, this is keeping me from wanting to ever stop for anyone in need, ever. Andy was lucky to survive. Now we're back to the scene we saw earlier where Benton blew up the car. And how, the special effects in this scene were crazy. More profiling is next, and the BAU think that Amelia might have come home. She might have used an alias. Benton came to Amelia with Rebecca in an attempt to do "that night" over again where Benton and Amelia raped and killed Benton's sister Miriam. Rossi, Reid, and Kate storm in just in time, or do they? It was an interesting tactic to tell the unsub that they were only after Amelia and not himself. Benton shot himself; it was his last move as a "free man". The scene ended with Kate hugging Rebecca with the song that was playing in the first scene. Well, you can't say it wasn't an odd episode. Something just felt weird about it, much like Hashtag (10x07). I cannot put my finger on it.

And finally, we get to see a snazzy jazz bar where Hotch took Rossi up on his offer to be a wingman. "Isn't she great?" "She's great, you could do worse!" I love these two, but this is too weird to hear. The singer brought her own wingman, or should I say, wingwoman? And her name is Audrey Hansen? That is strikingly close to Audrey Henson, who was a victim of battered-woman syndrome back in the episode The Crossing (3x18). I wonder if Hotch even noticed. ~ All in all, this episode had some highlights. I enjoyed some of the aspects of the profile, while the overall family feud and Amelia Porter's return could have been better. It seemed a bit rush at the end with her appearance and Benton's barging in. Still, it wasn't the worst episode I have ever seen, so I guess you can take some solace in that. ~

What did you think of Amelia Porter? Did you like it, or were there some parts that had you disappointed? Are you angry that we have to wait a month until The Forever People airs? Leave a common down below!

  1. Great review as always : ) I liked this episode but I'm with you about Hotch and Beth . They made a great couple, the distance between them weren't a problem anymore (well, that's what I thought) . I think you're right and that maybe Bellamy Young in Scandal is the explanation . Hotch deserves some happiness in his life . The thing I love though is the real friendship between Rossi and Hotch . The scene in the bar was priceless !
All in all a good episode and no I don't wanna wait a month until the next episode lol

  2. Freaking messed up family, is all I can say! When Benton was talking to Amelia about wanting to "relive that night with Miriam" since Rebecca looked so much like her, I seriously felt my stomach churn a little. I was afraid that was going to be where Benton might go...ergh. Very creepy. I find your comparison of him to Owen interesting-I can understand them being similar in terms of feeling sort of...isolated, or something, and not really having many people who care about them. But I think I'd sooner hang around Owen than Benton, which is...saying something. The guy playing Benton did remind me a bit of somebody else, though...I want to say Connor from "How to Get Away with Murder", and yet...I feel like he looks like someone else, too. I dunno).
Love "Elephant's Memory", by the way. Excellent episode. And I hadn't caught the comparison to the woman from "The Crossing"-that's eerie! Hm.
So yeah. Interesting, creepy case, but it did seem like you had to pay very close attention at points to make sure you kept track of it all. Did feel a little frantic in some spots. And with cases like that, I would expect somebody in the victim/unsub side of things to not make it out alive, so I do like that it wasn't all wrapped up too neat and pat. Also, I don't think that song at the start was a Christmas song of sorts, it sounded more like some old-time spiritual/gospel thing. It was a good song, though, whatever it was-I want to know who sings it now.
Definitely agreed on enjoying the interaction between Rossi and Hotch this episode. Their conversation at the start was entertaining, with Rossi's "drown your sorrows" comment and the online dating thing. And I like that they both hit it off with a couple women at the end, too :). Wonder if anything will come of those interactions?
I'm just really glad to find someone else who likes Beth. Seems everywhere I go, somebody always has to get on some rant about how she and Hotch "had no chemistry" and they've gone so far as to refer to her as "Beth the Bore" (which strikes me rather childish to hear from adult fans) and whatnot, so it's nice to not have to deal with that here. I liked her and Hotch together, too, and I'm sad to see their relationship end. But as noted by Cath, it does seem it had to do with Bellamy Young's schedule on "Scandal", which, fine, that's understandable. At least she and Hotch ended things on good terms, which I liked. I feel bad for him, though. Especially when he talked about taking Jack to Orlando to "distract him" from everything with Beth. Aw. Morgan's been lucky so far in the relationship department, and the girls all have their own relationships that are going strong, so here's hoping Rossi, Hotch, and Reid eventually get their own happiness on the romance front, too :).
I can't believe we've gotten to the fall finale already! Time flies! I hate that we have to wait a month before the show returns, too, but I do look forward to it coming back, and I look forward to reading your reviews and commenting again down the line! Been fun so far :D.

  3. Thank you very much :)
I just don't understand why they would break them up because of Scandal. They were doing just fine with the long-distance relationship before, I don't understand why things had to change now. I guess the only story lines Hotch can get now are about his social life.

  4. Thanks for the comments, once again, Angela.
Benton and Owen - well, the first thing both of them did when they got freedom was kill their fathers, so that's that.
Very creepy case all around. Not so great on the profiling front but cool nonetheless with Reid piecing together the timeline.
Haven't started HTGAMW yet, but I've seen Connor; he is very attractive :D
I mean, I'm all right with Beth. I definitely preferred Haley in pretty much all aspects but honestly, after all that, I just wanted Hotch to be happy. And then we get this...another example of "shipbaiting" or whatever by the fabulous Erica Messer. Most people also call Beth "Satan"; honestly, that's taking it too far. I have no words left to say about this other than I am disappointed.
Rossi and Hotch have a wonderful friendship. I mean, they're both dads now, so yeah. It's adorable. :)
Did you hear about the spinoff? Why on earth would they want to go through that again?

  5. You're welcome, as always :).
This is true! Quite a few cases where the parents were the unfortunate targets of their children on this show, it seems...
But yeah, the case was intriguing, albeit, as you note, creepy. I too loved the whole timeline thing-thank you, Reid, for clearing it all up for viewers :D. Heh.
He is. Has that whole "bad boy" thing going on-normally I'm not really one for bad boy types, but I get the appeal of him. If and when you do get to watching that show I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on him (and the show itself).
Yeah, we've discussed before how much we like Haley, if I recall :). She was good. And I like that even after the divorce, she wasn't made into some uber-cruel woman-she may have had her moments of anger and frustration over everything, but those feelings were justifiable, and her gentler moments made it easy to see why Hotch was so in love with her and wanted her back, too.
I haven't really read much with Messer, so I'm not all too familiar with the "shipbating" that I've seen people accuse her of doing (and some of that could well be fans reading way more into her comments than what's actually there, too, who knows?). I have my favorite ships on here, definitely, but whether they actually happen or not, I'm fine either way. Certainly agreed on wanting Hotch to be happy, though :D. He, Rossi, and Reid are the only single ones on the team now, so who knows what the show will do with them in that regard down the line. And yes to the "Satan" thing going too far. It's fine to not be a fan of a pairing, but yeah, some people do take their dislike to a crazy extreme. But that happens with some fans of any series, unfortunately.
I did! I'm very surprised they're going to try that again, too, yeah-I never saw the "Suspect Behavior" one (I really got into this show well after that series had died away), so I can't comment on that show. But I did hear about how ill-received it was, so it is strange that they want to give it another go. All the other main procedurals on CBS have had spin-offs that worked, though, so who knows? I think this show has something special about it that would be hard to replicate (namely the cast chemistry), but if they show they learned from their mistakes last time, then maybe it'll be worth checking out. I dunno.

  6. I can't agree more . And if they're not able to imagine interesting story lines for Hotch then leave him alone lol

  7. I have some time now...I really should start watching it, but my top priority is to finish Psych (what a fantastic show). God I miss Haley so much. You know, I'm almost 100% positive that all of Season 7 was ship baiting from Messer. And episode 200? They cut out the scene where JJ and Will reconciled in order to put in that bar scene with Hotch asking Prentiss how much longer they have her. Honestly, it's ridiculous how subliminally and non-subliminally Erica's doing this. Yeah, I'm still in denial that Hotch is single. I saw a bit of Suspect Behaviour, and it's not that bad. I don't think I'll try this one at all.

  8. I agree. I'd like to have more moments where he acts like a UNIT CHIEF, for heaven's sake! :D
