Chicago Fire - Santa Bites - Review

Dec 5, 2014

“Walk a mile, men. Walk a mile.”

The fall finale of Chicago Fire didn’t disappoint! The only disappointment is that we have to wait until 2015 for a new episode.
On the first call of the night a man jumps out of a window, nearly kills Severide, and leaves his wife in the bathroom. Oh yeah, it’s on fire. Husband of the Year goes to…

Severide and Cap almost miss the wife entirely, they barely hear her cries from under a bed. Herrmann and Mouch watch by the truck, and Herrmann brings up the man from last year who laid across his family to save them. I like that they casually weave in past elements into this show. Kudos to you, writers.

The cowardly husband shows up at the house (after bragging on TV how heroic he was) and explains to the guys that he was in a fire when he was younger. He panicked, and that’s why he jumped out of the window, leaving his wife behind.

Severide and Squad 3 later go back to the structure to confirm condemning it, and Severide notices that something is off. When he figures out where the fires were started, he realizes that Husband of the Year not only started the fire, but locked his wife in the bathroom in hopes of having her know the pain he once felt.

There were plenty of subplots during the episode. I could argue that there really wasn’t one main plot, just a jumble of subplots.

Here are the notable few:

Casey and Dawson are treading on very thin ice. At first, Dawson tries to make everything not seem like a big deal, and I wanted to yell at her. I am so tired of her behavior! She needs to own up to her mistakes, own up to her decisions, and commit to her job and/or relationship with Casey. While I do want Casey and Dawson together in the end, I’m at a point right now where I don’t think she deserves him. Maybe some time apart would help her get her act together.

Dawson and Casey have yet another heart to heart and things just aren’t getting any better. If we are taking sides, I’m on Team Casey. Dawson is reckless, insubordinate, and indecisive. Can you tell that I’m angry with her?

“I’m trying to be lieutenant and your fiancĂ©, and you can’t respect either one!” Preach it, Casey. Preach.

We  finally got some Severide/Casey time. It wasn’t much, but I’ll take it! Casey gets plastered and wakes up on some girl’s couch. Whoops! Casey doesn’t strike me as a person who would cheat (sober or drunk), but I have to admit, I was a little nervous. And of course, he could have handled the situation better.

We also  got some Sylvie/Dawson time! I’ve been waiting for these two to have a nice bonding moment, as they are the only women in the house. I hope we get to see this friendship grow. The Dawson/Shay scenes were always highlights and while this isn’t quite there, it’s a start. Speaking of Shay, she would kick Dawson’s butt for her behavior. We miss you Shay, the voice of reason.

By episode’s end, I’m seriously thinking that these two won’t be together much longer. Honestly, I’m not surprised. If ratings are any indication, this show could be on for more than a few more years. As frustrating as it may be, I think these two will break up somewhere in there. That breakup very well may come in early 2015.
The Molly’s food truck is just about ready for its grand opening. Sylvie and Cruz prepare for another signature food, called Santa Bites. It’s turkey, potatoes, and cranberries all baked in a bun. Yes. Please. I seriously might try to do something like this, it sounds amazing!

Molly’s is ready for its food truck debut at the Holiday Festival. Herrmann sees a local news anchor and suggests they talk about Molly’s on air. While he’s normally very friendly and outgoing, Herrmann gets unbelievably nervous on camera and I just love it. It’s so perfect! But of course, someone bumped the parking break during preparation, and the truck rolls down the street and right into the Nativity. Classic.

With a headline in the paper that reads “Manger Danger”, Herrmann rants, “That reads like Molly’s is responsible for the death of Jesus, again!”

Herrmann decides to scrap the Molly’s food truck. Instead, they give it to Chaplain Orvlosky to use as a meals-on-wheels sort of thing. I’m a little surprised they went this way with the food truck story line. It’s been such a big part of the season and I don’t know that I like how it ended.

On a similar note, I don’t see any romantic chemistry whatsoever between Cruz and Sylvie. These two look like great friends and nothing more. I’m really hoping they don’t push this for very long, it’s clearly a dead end.

Donna is days away from having Baby Boden. Well, Baby Robbins-Boden if Donna has her way. Donna asks how Boden would feel about hyphenating their baby’s last name, and he shoots it down immediately, “Tradition still means something to me.” Now yes, he could have handled that better than he did. But, I agree with him completely. If the name means so much to Donna, make it his middle name!

The way Boden equates the hyphenated name debacle to Thanksgiving dinner was wonderful. I always enjoy Boden’s rants, and this was no exception. And again, I’m completely on his side. Long live turkey and brown gravy! You all can keep your nasty sundried tomatoes.

Donna returns to the firehouse to argue more and goes into labor! Of course she goes into labor. Let me share with you all a thought of mine regarding TV births: I hate them. Just once, could we be a little more realistic and a whole lot less cheesy? Love that we have Baby Boden (no awful hyphenated name!), didn’t care at all for how we were introduced to him.

Of course, Baby Boden has a health scare. I’ll be honest, I’m not worried about Baby Boden. I can’t be. I don’t think my heart could take having to watch Boden lose his baby son. So, I’ve just decided that it’s not even an option.

Our mafia friend Anthony from the previous episode shows up at the firehouse to apologize to Mills for threatening him. They have a nice chat and he tells Mills that he knows he tried to save his son. Now, raise your hand if you thought he meant all this. If your hand is raised, give yourself a nice slap across the face. Of course he didn’t mean it!

Later while on a call, Mills and Sylvie find themselves trapped in alley by – you guessed it – Anthony the mafia man! We don’t see Mills or Sylvie for quite some time. When Truck 81 begins to wonder where they are, they take a ride to the ambo’s location and find the man on the stretcher, but no Mills or Sylvie.

I have to say, I’m not worried for either of these two either. It’s too soon to lose another major character (yes, Sylvie is now a major character), unless these writers go all LOST on us. But, the show needs some sort of cliffhanger to wrap up the fall season, so fine. I’ll pretend I’m worried.

I think this may be the strongest half-season run this show has ever had. It didn’t quite go the way I thought it would, which I guess is a good thing! I am disappointed with the lack of Severide/Casey scenes, but I think I’d have to give the fall 2014 season an A.

What did you think of the episode? What are your thoughts on Dawson and Casey? What do you hope to see in 2015?

  1. Casey and dawson were both wrong in this episode, but Casey was worse. The only reason he made up with Dawson, was because he thought he had messed up. She had every right for her initial reaction to be anger when the blond girl returned his phone. I didn't love the episide. Casey was acting so out of character... The other stuff is kind of predictable.

  2. dats true Nancy the only reason y he made up with her his bcuz he taught that he did something worse than wat she said to mills and Dawson was right severide definitely bring out the worse in Casey. Casey need to be cut dawson some slack she lost her best friend and not bcuz she is not acting out like severide doesn't mean she is not hurting she is.She is just bundling up everything inside and there's going to be a time when she is going to just break down like she did at the therapy session. She blame herself for her best fren death i don't care what knw one says i love Dawson she is a strong, independent, caring kick-ass type a girl and the writers need to stop making it seem like she's a insecure person. I hope she and casey can work out their issues cuz they do belong together.

  3. I'm tired of the Dawson and Casey drama. I think they both have issues and need time apart to figure things out. And I need a break from all of their drama! Even Mills said he didn't want to be a part of it. I used to really like Casey, but I don't think the writers have been very kind to him this year.

I'm not worried about the Boden baby or Brett, but I am worried about Mills. I don't think he'll die (of course I didn't think they'd kill Shay either so what do I know), but I think he could be seriously hurt. I think the writers missed a big crossover opportunity here.

In 2015 I would like to see some Severide and Dawson bonding. I'm disappointed that we haven't gotten more of that. I hope the writers explore the a Brett/Mills partnership more (I think they work really well together!) and strengthen the Dawson/Mills friendship (just their friendship- not a relationship!)

  4. Boden's rants about the name, thanksgiving, and ranting to Otis was hilarious. I also agree w/ traditions! I'm all for the women's rights/equals but there's a point of compromise and tradition. My last name once married hopefully will change, seriously if you had my last name you'd hate it too (my brother feels the same) so he's taking his wife's last name. But to honor the grandparents the kid will have the last name as the middle name (poor soon to be born nephew). I just think there's something nice about non harmful traditions.
I also think this show does a great job of showing strong women. Women in power. But all that said is it bad I want the woman to be the hero but go on a date w/a guy that holds the door open when you get to the restaurant, you can hold it for him on the way out if you need but I think really it's a manners thing! So sorry way off subject.
I'm actually torn between my teams Casey/Gabby. I think they both have soild points. Point one being I think Gabby getting the truck to stop the spill would've happened who ever her LT. was. It's hard to be in charge and have it OK to break rules bc it worked (as she was the PIC)(boden always backed her) to going to a constant I must check everything position. While she was wrong just doing it, I think it had nothing to do w.the fact it was Casey, she just did what she thought she needed to. But as Casey pointed out this is a team and he is who she should ask and answer too.
I hated that it seemed Casey only apologized bc he didn't come home and honestly didn't know what he'd done the night before, and so quickly flipped once he found out he hadn't cheated...not cool....I in no way blame Kelly though, Casey is a big boy (a man you might say), I just think gabby is trying to understand Casey's behavior.

One of my favorite things about this show is how realistic their (of course professional jobs are in handling er situations) but how real some of their personal situations/ideas work. They open a bar ...it's not just a money maker...you don't pass every test...you don't open a new business and have it an overnight success..you run for a position and don't get it...

Anyway I'll stop now, but would love some details on the up coming episodes :)

  5. I could definitely use a lot less Dawson and Casey drama and a lot more Chicago PD crossover!

  6. So you think talking in an empty bar with a guy you used to sleep with about difficulties you are having in your relationship with your fiancee while he holds your hand is not something to get upset about? How much truth there was in what she said has absolutely nothing to do with it. It was the fact that she was even having that conversation with him. Casey reacted like anyone would have in that situation. I doubt if you were in his shoes, you wouldn't have been too understanding about it either. No, he shouldn't have drank too much and gone to that girl's apartment with Severide, but nothing happened. Still, he felt guilty about it because it was so unlike Casey to even do that much. And the fact he was being so loving toward Dawson may have been out of guilt, but it was because of his feelings for her that he felt guilty about it.

  7. I'm team Dawson. She at least wanted to talk., he just shut her out.
And the baby name thing... Also not convinced he was in the right. He was hard on her. I always liked it to name the kid after the mother to honor her, because she has to go through all the pain. But I think in the end it's about if they are married or not. If I was having a baby and was unmarried, regardless if I'm with the father, I would give the child my last name. If I was married and have taken my partners name, OF COURSE the child would as well. It all depends on the situation (and the name).

  8. i cant wait for the next episode but i do have to say im not digging dawson & casey together as a couple at all anymore. theres too much unnecessary drama and ive found that since theyve been together the writers have changed both characters a lot (in a negative way) its just getting frustrating/boring to watch. i do miss dawson/mills though..there is still great chemistry there and idk their relationship was shortlived but they complimented each other well...shame the writers wont ever drop this dawson/casey disaster.

  9. What would you assume if you know the following: he was out drinking, he has not come home the night, he was really hangover - so it wasn't just one drink. he told you he lost his phone and then a girl brings his phone later during the day saying he forgot it at her place. I don't really think you would patiently go, give him his phone back and ask politely if he has an explanation.

He made up with Dawson just to cover for what he'd thought he'd done.

  10. She tried to talk with him first she shut her out, not just once. So, she may have screwed up but at the very least she was willing to talk it up, clear it, he wasn't.

She wasn't wrong about what she told mills - they have issues in the home part of the relationship, she basically told him something similar: that "if they can't talk how is their relationship going to work?" He was on the silent mode. She tried to talk it out with him. He didn't want to, so when he hears what bothers her anyway just not directly said to him it's her fault?

Yea, she shouldn't have said that to Mills, she made a mistake, but if she said that to Shay would Matt have the same reaction? She also used to be good friends with Mills before that. It's not the first time they hit a bump and Dawson needed a friend to gather her thoughts - remember the cabin with Shay? Well this time she doesn't have Shay anymore.

If I ware in his shoes I would have talked with her at home, and the bar discussion would not have happened.

They are both at fault, they need to take a step back and then talk it out and have a solution either they're in or out. Less drama more maturity would be ideal - from both of them.

  11. I just recently started watching. I came in when Severide was showing off his new wife. I like Cruz and Sylvie they have something in common--Zumba. I worried about Sylvie when she gave Dawson that pink shirt. Dawson is to keep it at the bottom of her locker and next year she'll come upon it and remember that moment. Just like with Shay. We'll see.

  12. While I think both Casey & Dawson contribute to their relationship issues I would have to say I side more with Casey. I’m still a fan of them together but the writers have done a poor job keeping them interesting. We haven’t seen one positive couple-ish thing from them since the proposal, they already act like an old married couple, yet they aren’t even married yet….I’m expecting a break up TBH. Which annoys me cause I hate TV couples who are always on/off.

Sure Dawson wanted to talk…after she got caught getting cozy with Mills (who has ALWAYS annoyed me), I’d be pissed too if I was Casey! But on the other hand Dawson has a right to be pissed about some chick bringing in his phone…..SO, even tho Casey didn’t give her a chance to explain, Dawson should have known from her experience and given the chance to Casey to explain, she could have been the bigger person. Aside from these events I agree with Casey that she doesn’t respect his authority as her lieutenant. She choose to be on his truck yet she shows little respect to his orders. She says she wants to talk about it at home, why? He said what needed to be said, she needs to follow orders, if she doesn’t she could cause himself, the Chief and her to lose their jobs. Does she not get that?! Does she think talking about it at home will give her a different answer? That maybe at home he’ll give her a high five and tell her “it was pretty bad ass”? I don’t think so because she was completely in the wrong. Sure it worked, but she endangered herself and her team in the process. Talking about it at home would just reinforce that her PIC thought is was reckless as well as her fiancĂ©. And history has proven that while she claims to have been good friends with Casey for a long time, she doesn’t take it well when he disagrees with her (good for him for doing it anyway). When she asked his opinion about her going to fire school, he didn’t give her the answer she wanted so she got snotty with him (FYI I thought he gave her excellent advice), when they had to make the decision about being on the same truck she ignored his concerns and jumped on it because that’s what she wanted. Why would a talk about her actions go any different? Yes she lost one of her best friends and feels responsible….maybe she should talk about that with Casey. Their work should be separated from their home lives IMO. If she (they) can’t do that then, as long as they are on the same truck they are doomed. Personally I think Casey is better at separating their work and personal lives than she is.

  13. The great thing about Fire is the strong cast. I wish we got to see them shine more instead of the incessant Dawson/Casey drama. I do think some time apart is what they need.

They definitely missed a crossover opportunity. These two shows can cross over so seamlessly, I'm a little surprised we haven't seen more of it this season.

    More Severide/Casey is definitely needed!

  14. I'm on Team Casey too.

I think that Sylvie will try with Cruz, but I also think that there was a purpose to all those glances to Severide. He's beautiful, everyone would look at him, but they wanted to show that.

I can't talk about last names... I'm not American. In my country, there isn't hyphenated name... and it really sounds awful to me.

  15. thank you, im so tired of this.. dawson lost her bestfriend and balmes herself because of what happened because she told shay told to trade places with her with was filled with guilt but it wasnt her fault. i wish everyone would leave dawson alone.. shes been through alot. like you said i dont care what antone saids dawson will always be my favortie. casey needs to cut her some slack because she asked him if they could talk and he said thattt wasnt a good idea. she was upset she had no one to talk to, so when mills opened up to her she just let it all out because she held it in for so long. dawson and casey belongn together and i have a feeling they will work though their problems. yeah i will admit they are both in the wrong but its more casey then dawson because hes been mistreating her. i love dawson and no one will change change that.
