Atlantis - The Marriage of True Minds - Advance Preview + Dialogue Teasers
5 Dec 2014
Atlantis Reviews SSWith the wedding to Prince Telemon arranged, the future wellbeing of Atlantis is secured. All that is left is for the couple to travel to Aegina in order to gain his father’s blessing on the union. There are many dangers on the road ahead however. Pasiphae and the Colchean army are still on the lookout for the new Queen, and would be more than happy to dispatch her if the moment were to arise. Yet Ariadne feels that she must do what is best for her city, therefore with Jason and friends along to help protect her, she must undertake this perilous journey.
I hadn’t realised that the show was going to be taking a running arc quite so literally this season until this episode. This isn’t the second of a two part story, as I had originally thought. Instead it is the next instalment in what appears to be one epic journey for the characters, which I can see continuing until at least the mid-season break. Jason’s myth tends to told as a long, involved saga, so I feel that this is the right approach for the show to take too. It certainly makes for a more absorbing adventure. Any exposition is handled well for the new viewers who happen to be tuning in, so I doubt any of them would be lost or not understand where what is going on.
There is a little more humour in this week’s episode; my only criticism of Telemon’s was that it was a lacking in that department. The partnership between Pythagoras and Hercules continues to be my favourite draw this season. Emms and Addy have struck the perfect balance on their character’s comradery as they share the secret of Jason’s parentage.
There are some interesting names that crop up in the guest cast this week. Interestingly there is another Argonaut introduced, Orpheus, who we meet with his wife Eurydice (played by Ronald Pickup and Sian Thomas). Like Telemon they both appear to have a different path ahead than one that includes a jaunt aboard the Argo itself, though they do appear to be important to Jason’s destiny. With them is Diagoras (John Light), who could be based on a number of historical characters. He is more of a mystery for now, but I assume that we will learn more about him when we pick up the tale in The Day of the Dead.
The Marriage of True Minds airs on Saturday 6th December at 8.15pm on BBC 1 and BBC 1 HD in the UK, and at 9pm on BBC America. Below are a few dialogue teasers to see you through until then. Don't forget to come back to vote in our poll after the episode and let us know what you thought.
“My lady, he is of royal blood”
“I’m still having nightmares about one eyed monsters, we wait for the others here”
“Give me the benefit of your wisdom, what else have you learnt?”
“Sometimes, we are blind to those we hold dearest”
“If you don’t trust me enough to advise you at least let me protect you on the journey”
“Well, lucky for you I don’t like being told what to do”
“Please forgive us, our journey has made us wary of strangers”
“Do not see it as a burden, the gods mean it as a gift”
“You will have your place in my court”
“I will give it some consideration, but I alone will know the chosen route”

Thank you for the preview! Question: Are there any juicy Jason/Ariadne moments and scenes? Do they at least share memorable moments? :)
ReplyDeleteIm a bit disillusioned by Orpeheous and Euridice - its one of my favourite Greek Myths along with Icarus but I can't see they will tell their tale as I had hoped. It loses its impact if they're both old because it was heartbreaking that she died so young and the lengths Orpheous went to to save her. I mean its not going to be as sad if they're both old and lived many happy years together. I want to see Orpheous go to the underworld and play his music to Hades and to save Euridice (well try to) and I know Atlantis puts its own spin on these stories but sometimes I wish they could represent the characters more closely to the original myth. I've also decided that I'm never going to like Jason, he's flat, bland and I hate to say it because Jack Donnolley seems like a lovely guy (and I haven't seen any of his other work) but in Atlantis he is still very poor, in my opinion, his acting is the weakest which is such a shame considering it is basically his story but when I start wishing that it was the 'Pythagoras and Hercules Show' thats not a good thing and unfortunately even though I still have problems with the show (after giving it a second chance) one of the main ones is Jason himself and even though there are definite improvements this series, none of those things have been Jason. Im going to stick with this series as there are a few things which are coming up that intrigue me but I fear that this may be the end of my journey with this show because it just hasn't captured my heart at all.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome :) Hmm, I think it depends on what you call juicy, I wouldn't necessarily call them that myself. But I think that they are shippy in nature at various points, as in you are certainly reminded that they do have deep feelings for each other. One of the teaser lines should stand out as being Jason always wanting to protect Ariadne no matter what happens.
ReplyDeleteI was a little disappointed at first too with Orpheus and Eurydice, but it actually works quite well with what see in this episode imo. They further both Jason and Ariadne's journey in a different way to which we see traditionally, yet it it is still important I feel, it's quite clever. Due to the nature of the on going arc this season they are also in the next episode, so I am wondering if we will be seeing a twist of the Hades tale take place in it. That's what I would like to see happen anyway.
ReplyDeleteI do wish that Jason had a bit more charisma too, last year felt like the Pasiphae & Hercules show and this one is shaping up to be Hercules & Pythagoras' one. It's a shame that they haven't quite got the chemistry right there. Jack Donnolley is superb at the stunts, I will give him that, and I do also feel that he has improved somewhat since last year in the acting chops too. He hasn't got that lead man feel about him though, which is a shame. I have to admit that apart from that, I am enjoying the show a lot more than last season though. Dropping the unnecessary humour, upping the fighting/drama, and especially bring in Vincent Regan at court has made it much more watchable for me.
Thanks, Sandi. The pix for the following episode are making me a bit sad. All those Medea/Jason photos. Ugh. I can't see how he can go from this episode of protecting Ariadne to POSSIBLY kissing Medea in the very next episode...It's just odd. And kind of sudden.
ReplyDeleteAs for "juicy," I just meant "shippy" type of moments that shippers would love to see for Ariadne/Jason. :)
You've restored my faith in the Orpheous and Euridice storyline! I am definitely going to watch them (and am glad they're more than just passing characters it seems) and I really hope we get them in Hades at some point (maybe I shouldn't be so cynical before I've watched the ep!)
ReplyDeleteYou put it much fairer about Jason and I agree he is great at stunts and I did think that episode 2 he had improved in his acting but I still find him disappointing which is a shame since this series is a definite improvement (I like the idea of an ongoing story arc) the effects are better and the battle scenes particularly dramatic. I also think they use their location work very well. And Sarah Parish is brilliant!
I'm glad I've helped you feel a bit better about the characters. I do completely understand that it can be frustrating that sometimes the myths are changed so differently in this retelling. These two in particular are in a very different place to where they would be in their lives in the traditional myth, which is jarring on the surface. But as I say, they are still helping on Jason's journey, even though it's in a different way. I haven't seen the next episode yet though, it's been a bit of a busy week for me, but I am hoping that we delve deeper into their story in the next instalment. The setting of the episode would make it the perfect place to do so imo.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the battles and effects, they seem much more polished this year. The on going arc seems to holding up well too so far, though I hope that this mid-season break won't last for too long.
