“ARROW” SOARS TO SERIES HIGHS WITH PART TWO OF THE EPIC “FLASH” CROSSOVER

ARROW Scores its Highest Rating Ever in Adults 18-49, and

Most Watched Episode Since its Series Premiere

ARROW Matches Series Highs in Adults 18-34 and Men 18-34

The CW Shoots to Most Watched Wednesday in More Than Two Years

December 4, 2014 (Burbank, CA) – Hot on the heels of THE FLASH’s strong performance Tuesday night, the ARROW crossover episode scored its highest-rated episode ever in adults 18-49 (1.4/4), and had its second most watched episode ever (3.86 million), behind only its series premiere on 10/10/12, according to preliminary Live Plus Same Day Nielsen ratings for Wednesday, December 3, 2014.

With last night's conclusion of the epic crossover event, ARROW matched its series high in adults 18-34 (1.2/5) and men 18-34 (1.5/6), and hit a new series high in men 18-49 (1.7/6).

ARROW ranked #1 in the hour in men 18-34, #2 in the hour in adults 18-34, #2 in men 18-49, and also outrated Fox in both adults 18-49 and total viewers.

Week to week, ARROW was up +46% in total viewers, +50% in adults 18-34, +50% in men 18-34, +56% in adults 18-49, and +70% in men 18-49.

THE 100 hit a season high in total viewers (1.94 million), rising +18% over last week, and remained even with last week’s season highs in adults 18-34 (0.5/2) and in adults 18-49 (0.6/2).

This was The CW's most watched Wednesday night (2.9 million) in more than two years, since 11/14/12, and highest rated in adults 18-49 (1.0/3), in more than a year.

The CW ranked #1 for the night (8-10 pm) among broadcasters in men 18-34 (1.0/4).

Week to week, The CW was up +35% in total viewers, +29% in adults 18-34 (0.9/3), and +43% in adults 18-49 (1.0/3).

Versus this same Wednesday last year, The CW was up +16% in total viewers and +11% in adults 18-49.

  1. Good for the show and good for The CW. More eyeballs on this network is always a plus.

  2. and that's why I said that Arrow won't last longer than the Flash

    ReplyDelete
  3. So happy for Arrow and The Flash, hopefully Arrow maintains some of that audience!

    ReplyDelete
  4. because the Flash gave it a ratings boost that will probably not leave any longterm effects.
This just proved that Arrow was depending on the Flash to make such numbers

    ReplyDelete
  5. I can't see that happen, the crossover gave them a major boost that most likely will be limited to this week only. I've never seen crossovers have a lasting effect ratings wise

    ReplyDelete
  6. It depends... Right now Arrow is better than 80% of everything theCW has. It doesn't matter how much better Flash's ratings are but how better Arrow's are against the rest of the roster. I can see the two going for ten years, tbh.

You know what i would love to know? How much money cost to make an episode of Arrow against one of The Flash.

If Supernatural's 11th Season is almost a sure thing, i could see Arrow on a 12th Season and Flash on a 10th.

Perhaps at some point they let Connor Hawke take the Green Arrow mantle and Wally West becomes the new Scarlet Speedster. Retiring the old gangs but keeping the show's continuity.

Also, contractual situations could mean hell... Still, i'm not convinced thatFlash will maintain those numbers: By Season 2 it could very well start with the 1.0s. Arrow is almost like Supernatural, it has a steady fanbase that isn't going anywhere soon.

  7. Especially on a show on it's third Season... But it could be seen on Season 4 perhaps, if people watch the series during hiatus.

  8. the best thing is that the Arrow cast showed up on the Flash in a major role, since the Flash is something rather easy to rewatch and is predestined for syndication (lighthearted, easy, MOTW plot...the episodes really don't matter if you have a serialized show like TVD/Reign/TO).

People that aren't interested in a show like Arrow but watch the Flash are thus exposed to a large portion of the Arrow cast and possibly get hooked.

  9. This is so exciting! Congratulations guys, very well deserved. The two episodes were excellent. I hope the audience stick around for the fall finale, it's going to be an episode that you will never forget!

  10. I'm not going to go there after this season but quality wise Arrow is dangerously close to TVDs third season. It's getting all about shipping and we can feel it. They need to make a U turn quickly.

Yeah, that'd indeed be something I'd love to see as well, I sent Dark UFO an article I wrote a while back that was asking the question if it wouldn't be for the best if studios released budget information. He didn't publish it though, sadly.

But it would be more than helpfull to evaluate a shows future. For example. Reign is a period piece that constantly requires new sets, new costumes, new actors and new locations. In short: a show that burns through the money in a quick way. Knowing that physical props, actors and locations are what makes most of the budget I would argue that Reign is one of the networks most expensive shows. There's no way to proove it since CBS/Take5 are incredibly hardcore about sealing away their budget data.

Looking at The Flash from a filmmakers view: it has a pretty large cast with 7 actors that so far have appeared in every episode (unlike other shows that opt to not use some of their regulars in various episodes), does not feature too many costumes (minus Flash and Zoom) but pulls VFX that are unneccesary pricey.
I've been working with CGI for quite a while now and while Barrys speeding effect is a rather easy one there have been shots (like the ones with Barry moving but a truck remaining in the air) are incredibly tricky to pull because you have to put in a lot of precise work ON SET as well and not just in the editing room. Effect wise the show is very likely burning through its budget quick.

Arrow does the same, they don't spend it on digirtal visuals but on practical effects like car explosions and a (fantastic) stunt team. Unlike The Flash they opt to not use various actors in their episodes.
Budget wise I would argue that the Flash and Arrow are pretty much on par simply because of both shows balancing their money quite similarly.

I'm still curious about TVD/TO, both shows only play on set locations with RARELY adding new ones, requires little new wardrobe and is effect wise pretty modest.
These two have to be cheap as f**k...wich is positive but as a TO fan I'd love to see some more effort put into the production

    ReplyDelete
  11. hoping for the same but I'm not that positive that it'll happen. I think we might pull a 1.1 or 1.0 though

  12. Whoop whoop !!!! Great !!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. And they played their cards right. The episode showed the best elements of Arrow, the ones that got its audience hooked in the first place, the amazing dynamic between Team Arrow, the great fight scenes and the cool tricks and weapons the Arrow has, the big mystery (Sara's death), Dig's awesomeness, Felicity's intelligence and lightness, the brooding and tortured and misunderstood hero (and let's make Iris go crazy when she sees him in case anyone didn't notice that he's very handsome but make him act very politely towards her obvious crush because he is a gentleman and in love with Felicity oh and he also has a son but he doesn't know about him lol) and of course the undeniable chemistry between Oliver and Felicity.

    ReplyDelete
  14. you know that I have to disagree with that.

    ReplyDelete
  15. "the undeniable chemistry between Oliver and Felicity"

I don't disagree with them having chemistry but the anti-shipper in me is always going to shut these comments out as negative. I hate shippy comments :P

    ReplyDelete
  16. I actually expected you to disagree with the Felicity part. I guess I was half right haha

    ReplyDelete
  17. and while I agree that they have chemistry, the fact that fans kept pushing for more shipping-scenes actually ruined parts of the show for fans like me. I hated the Olicity heavy episodes and the HARD focus that was given the couple

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't mind Felicity or Olicity (I would call myself someone that saw their chemistry back in s1 and kinda wanted them to become a thing) but the fanbase has just pushed SO HARD for it to happen, the creators gave in and thus we got turds like episode 1 and 5 of season 3.

"Too much" is something that is very true about Olicity in my book

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm trying to sympathies but.... yeah the shipper in me is far too happy with the scenes.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I get that and really I'm happy that the show is at least making a bunch of fans happy.
Hell I would be making flips of joy over Laurel being turned into a badass people could accept and Merlyn appearing in every episode...

    ReplyDelete
  21. I actually think that we didn't get enough Olicity scenes in season three, I would prefer small moments every episode than nothing at all for a while and one heavy and dramatic episode, I feel bad for the writers, they are never gonna win on that front.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Just one correction, A LOT of fans :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. that would actually be something I would support, small scenes don't tick non-shippers off and give fans to look forward to something for every episode instead of making episodes specifically for shippers and then having them suffer a dry span. But IMO there've been enough Oilcity scenes in ep 1, 5, FlashvsArrow (both episodes)

    ReplyDelete
  24. it's be wrong to assume that the Olicity fandom makes the most percentage of the fandom though (I know you didn't say that but whenever a shipper tells me that "Without Olicity Arrow wouldn't survive" I feel incredibly sickened).

I've just dealt with too many violent shippers in my life....but to be fair I only was threatened to get raped once by a Delena fan, when I told him (yes, him) that I was a dude he shut up rather quickly :P

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well many know about 100 just don't Carey like me. Did like the First season and can get warm with the second. Sorry but I am happy for the Fans of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm still glad that they told two different stories and made it two crossovers instead of one coherent crossover storyline

    ReplyDelete
  27. He sure likes to play the ship card a lot knowing that the Olicity fans are very active on Twitter.

    ReplyDelete
  28. he's a fine writer and all but we all know that when he actually stops to play the card the fans will turn on him. Not all shippers are as sane as the ones we have here.
He's kind of feeding a beast

    ReplyDelete
  29. and I'm glad that there're a lot of reasonable shippers as well. If only TVD had them...

Yeah, I think that guy really lost it with his obsession over Somerhalder

    ReplyDelete
  30. That's what i liked about it too,it felt more natural rather than forced!

    ReplyDelete
  31. that's why they're calledcrazy shippers xD

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well Arrow is guaranteed to go 5 seasons. Nowadays if a show gets a 3rd season, a 4th season is pretty much guaranteed unless the 3rd season ratings just completely tank, which through the first half of this season for Arrow that hasn't been the case.

And 5 seasons nowadays he is pretty much the benchmark for a successful run for a TV show.

As for The Flash last longer maybe but as some have posted Amell may not want to go past 5 seasons. But if Arrow was to keep its ratings steady and Amell and the producers want to keep the show going CW will oblige them. Smallville only ended because Welling and the producers decided it was time to end it. Supernatural, Ackles and Padalecki said they are with the show until people that make the decisions end it, which Mark Pedowitz has said as long as Supernatural will keep going as long as the fans want it to. Same thing for Vampire Diaries, I don't watch it but it seems like as long as the producers and actors want to keep doing it and the fans keep watching it the CW will keep it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The Arrow can thank The Flash for that. The Flash is doing some great things for the CW... I much prefer the Flash over the Arrow and I cannot wait to see the show reach its full potential.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I completely agree. The Flash is going to surpass the Arrow and then take off on its own once it gets it bearings.

    ReplyDelete
  35. A lot of people must've watched the promo after the episode, and it was really good so I'm hoping maybe they will be intrigued to watch.

Have to admit that I do enjoy their scenes a lot. But I think that the strength in their scenes in season 2 were the smaller more subtle ones and a couple of moments last night when Oliver said to her 'you see what you've done' when Roy called it the Arrow cave and when Cisco said that Felicity wouldn't let him change the hood and the look between the 2 of them feel much more organic and less forced. They have great chemistry you don't need to force it. It just works. Please do not do a Julie Plec on this show!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Why are we making great ratings into a competitive thing? Arrow got its highest ratings since its pilot, and since Arrow is in a much much better place than it was in season 1, maybe it will translate to higher ratings down the line. Bless the beauty of Netflix where shows that get better actually have a shot to pick up viewers over time. And good for Flash and the Arrow. The CW getting out of last place is pretty awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm so happy for Arrow. This is such a wonderful time for the show. I know Stephen is overly excited. Think I'll go check. Haha Congrats Arrow!

    ReplyDelete
  39. if it lasts or not - happy for Arrow. Flash was more funny but Arrow episode felt better for me. the plot was way more my thing, more complex but of course we had 3 season of building up. Wondering if Falshback-Waller is doing to Oliver what Robert Queen did to Oliver in the Outsiders War.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I said that exact same thing, I prefer the little moments from season 2, they are more organic and fun and light and FILLED with chemistry, pretty much everything that made us fall in love with this couple in the first place, that's why I loved their scenes in the crossover, they were classic Olicity.

    ReplyDelete
  41. did anyone else catch the woman from olivers past, that has a child? wondering if oliver is the papa?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Confirmed last season. Moira paid her off to tell Oliver the child died and move away.

    ReplyDelete
  43. And? Arrow's ratings are doing just fine this season, why are you acting like it's on the brink of cancelation?
