Throwback Thursday – LOST - Pilot: Part 1
Nov 6, 2014
Cancelled Shows Reviews RF TBTThrowback Thursday, a weekly article in which we look back at our favorite TV episodes from over the years.
Lost is easily my favorite show of all time, it was pure quality right from the beginning. The pilot to this date is amongst the best I have seen. What made is so great wasn't the storyline, it was the characters. There use of flashbacks throughout the show was remarkable, it made us really get to know each, and every character. I will never forget the jaw dropping opening sequence when Jack wakes up in the middle of a jungle disorientated, wondering where he is, he then runs towards the screams of fellow survivors. In a desperate attempt he tries to save as many people as possible in the chaos of the plane wreck. While most shows normally take the whole episode to introduce you to the setting, and the characters LOST dived straight into all that from the first minute. Getting a quick insight into the setting so quickly made me feel as if I was experiencing the plane crash with these characters. There was very little time in the pilot to digest what you were watching,it was very fast paced. Which is what I liked, I hate how we get pilots now that take so long to build up to something. LOST's Pilot was action packed throughout, I couldn't take my eyes of the screen for a second.
As the chaos slowly dies down Jack goes to attend a wound of his own, this was when we were first introduced to Kate. Straight away they instantly clicked, and I had a feeling they would eventually end up together. You could feel the chemistry between those two from a mile off. I have to admit I haven't always liked Kate, her persistence to have to do something every minute was very frustrating at times. Also her back and forward romance with Jack and Sawyer was beyond annoying. I was actually so thrilled when they introduced another female partner for Jack/Sawyer in Juliet, as it took attention of Kate, and her back and forth romances. Then again it kind of created a four way love triangle in the end.
Anyway back at the plane wreck everyone is getting to gripes with what has happened, this is when we really get introduced to a whole bunch of characters, who would soon become the main group of survivors we would see week in week out. What I really liked is the pilot wasn't focused on just one person; it was focused on multiple people's different experiences to what has happened. Shortly after you thought everything had died down, we got our first appearance from "the monster" which when I first saw something knocking down the trees I thought "Here comes King Kong". I did think it would be something really cheesy, although it kind of was. What I liked was you didn't actually see what was out there, which is what made it such a great scene as it began the first mystery surrounding the island and its inhabitants. We were all left wondering what was out there, and what kind of place it was.
During the morning Jack, Kate and Charlie head out to try to find the transceiver. This is when we first got a real glimpse of what Kate is like; her constant nagging to Jack to go along with him was a particular standout. I didn't mind it, as I liked seeing her and Jack venture out into the unknown, as it created some pleasant dialogue between them. We also found out about Charlie's heroin addiction which later would go onto to play a huge part in the series for his development. I really liked Charlie's character, he was one of my favorites. I was very sad when he died in the season 3 finale. He was a well rounded individual that had an interesting back story.
Once they eventually meet with the pilot (Greg Grunberg, Heroes) he informs them that they have been flying in the wrong direction, and that they are probably looking for them in the wrong place. The characters are given little time to mull over this dire news, as smokey attacks, and kills the pilot. The three characters make a desperate dash for it, this provided us with one of the most memorable scenes in lost. The three of them running through the jungle in the pouring rain, hardly being able to see a few feet in front of them was filmed brilliantly. They knew they were running from something, none of them or we knew what it was. All we knew was that it killed the pilot in a horrific fashion, and that the island is more dangerous, and mysterious than we first thought. It was a frantic chase through a jungle running in fear of the unknown. When Charlie falls when they are running, Jack goes back to help him up, whilst Kate continued to run. Once Charlie found Kate again, she cared not for him, but for Jack. You could already tell from the pilot that she cared for him, and it planted the first seeds for there 6 season on off romance. Before that she was trying to consume the fear she had, by counting to 5. The last thing in the first episode we get treated to is an image of the pilot in the tree ripped apart. When I first saw the episode with the ending of seeing the pilot in the tree, my initial thoughts were "what kind of an island is this".
Favorite Quotes
The Pilot: "Our radio went out, no one could see us. We turned back to land in fiji;by the time we hit turbulence, we were a thousand miles of course. They're looking for us in the wrong place"
Charlie: "Hey guys, is this normal? Sort of, day turning into night? You know, end of the world type weather? Is this... Guys?"
Jack "So I just made a choice. I would let the fear in let it take over let it do its thing. But only for five seconds. That's all I was going to give it."
Charlie: "Kate, there's a certain gargantuan quality about this thing!"
Favorite character from the episode: Charlie
Without a question, he was my favorite character from the episode. Everything he said was pure gold, he added some comic relief to the episode as well. Even though his plane just went down, he was still trying to find humor in it, and I really liked that. He actually is my second favorite on the show of all time, behind Ben.
Summary
LOST easily is my favorite show of all time, the pilot set the tone for the whole series. The idea of it was just perfect, a group of survivors forced to live and work together if they are going to survive. It was a simple idea, made into perfection. The pilot was thrilling, mysterious, moving, well directed and well acted from top to bottom; which is all I could want from a pilot. For me to keep watching a show it has to interest me in the pilot, and LOST did within the first 5 minutes.
Sorry this is rushed, had very little time to write it.
As always , thank you for reading! Let me know in the comments what you thought of the episode!
Brings back some great memories :)
ReplyDeleteLOST will always be my favourite show of all time. Thanks for posting Robert.
Yeah it does, I don't think anything on at the moment can match how great LOST was.
ReplyDeleteGreat TBT! The Pilot was just pure quality and no wonder it became ABC's first hit in years in 2004. It really did set the show up with a bang.
ReplyDeleteThanks, it was actually the first show on ABC that I started watching. It was a huge hit at first then slowly by season 4 lost a lot of interest from viewers.
ReplyDeletei miss som much Lost. That's the time we know that we're old. -_-
ReplyDeletehaha, No matter how many times I watch it, the show always seems to get better the next time viewing it.
ReplyDeleteTears of Joy! Thank you Robert for this lovely throwback!

It really is one of the BEST opening sequences---such a human experiences. The money spent on those breath-taking and terrifying shots still resonates with me, as one the most emotional scenes in the history of film/images. If that doesn't hook, you, then I don't know what would?

Exactly! Well said :)
Thank you for your kind words :)
ReplyDeleteEverything about the show had me hooked, even when I watch it now I still think that I have crashed on an island with them.I remember the painful waiting for the next episode to air, even worse was the waiting 6 or so months for the next season. Once the show ended, there has been nothing that really has come close to LOST. Some shows I think are really good like Game Of Thrones, but there not as character driven like LOST, which is what made it so good.
I think the most emotional part of the show was easily the deaths, every main character death was heartbreaking in there own different way. Some of them still stick with me like Sun and Jins.
This Place Is Death. (and death is not the end, only a transition)
ReplyDeleteI couldn´t agree more. LOST is my favorite show of all times aswell and the pilot ranks high on my favorite episode list. The characters on this show is amonst the best I have ever seen. There is not 2 or 3 great characters.....they are all awesome. I don´t think I have seen so many great characters in any other show.
ReplyDeleteI didn't watch lost but i am binge watching it right now and the Pilot was pure awesome
ReplyDeleteLost is my favorite TV show along with Revenge. I hope you like it!
ReplyDeleteI rewatched the pilot like a month ago, but what I really want is to rewatch the whole series. Favorite show all time, no doubt!
ReplyDeleteI always loved that line Charlotte said. Seemed so fitting.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy the rest of the series as much as I did :)
ReplyDeleteyeah. that's true. ヅ
ReplyDeleteSame here. I can't remember a single character from the survivors that I hated. It is very rare to have a show like that with all likable characters, most shows have at least one that everyone can't stand.
ReplyDeleteOut of pure interest what is your favorite episode of all time?
I admit I have re-watched the series twice after it ended, it is just so good. Once I start one episode, I can't stop watching it.
ReplyDeleteI remember the commercials that were shown before LOST started. I couldn't quite decide if I was interested in watching it or not. The night of the Pilot, I decided I would record it and see. Well my wife was taking the kids to her mom's house for something, so I decided to watch it live. I was hooked within 5 minutes. My wife called me during one of the commercial breaks and asked, "are you watching this new show called "LOST"?" We were both hooked.
ReplyDeleteLOST is tied with Twin Peaks and Fringe for me as my favorite TV shows ever. They each have a quality that just pulled me in from the get-go and never let go. I still enjoy watching all three shows, and I watch them all frequently. LOL
I think that anyone I introduced to the show got hooked straight away. I have been meaning to re-watch Fringe, as that was another brilliant show, which I am sad that it ended. I haven't heard one person in my family say the show was bad after watching the pilot.
ReplyDeleteThere hasn't been a show that matched the experience of LOST ever. The theorizing and breaking down of every episode was and is unmatched. DarkUFO posted spoilers, theories, fan fiction, multiple episode reviews, set reports and whatever other info he came across...it was a full-time TV experience.
ReplyDeleteI watched the first 3 season 4 times, the last 3 seasons only 3. It has been a few years though, I think it´s time for another rewatch. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhen I look at one of the polls on this and other websites and lots of people have rated something awesome I am always shocked. I probably don't use that vote twice a year, if that often. Something has to be truly extraordinary for me to give it this vote. Usually it is an OK or maybe a good if they have gone a little above the norm. I give out a few greats but not too many of those. I consider most pilots barely ok as they are usually such a mess. I could probably count on one hand the number of pilots that I have considered great. The Lost pilot is one of only a very small group that I would have given an awesome vote. It truly was breathtaking.
ReplyDeleteLOST and Twin Peaks are my two favorites aswell. I am SOOOO excited (and a little scared) that they are bringing back Twin Peaks!!
ReplyDeleteIt is very very difficult for me to choose a favorite episode. Man of science, man of Faith is the first to stand out in my memory. Trough the looking glass, The man from Tallahassee and Walkabout are others that stands out. I´m a big fan of Locke and Linus, so I tend to love all the episodes were they are the main focus.
ReplyDeleteI use to love reading spoilers about who was the main focus on the next episode.
It was indeed! I loved discussing and sharing my theories with other fans of the show. There were so many mysteries surrounding the island, that there was endless things to discuss, which is what made it have such a huge following of fans.
ReplyDeleteSome great episodes you mentioned! Ben was my favorite on the show, so every episode he appeared in was very enjoyable. Through the looking glass is in my top 5 episodes of all time, really liked that one.
ReplyDeleteI never read any spoilers about the next episode, I always wanted to be surprised as to who the episode would focus on.
I completely agree, I don't rate many pilots highly as most shows take a few episodes to really start to engage me. The only pilot for me that has come close to LOST's pilot was Person Of Interest, I absolutely loved that one. A huge part of me liking it was probably because the actor Michael Emerson played my favorite character on LOST.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, I didn´t watch the promo´s either and stayed away from most spoilers. But I loved knowing who´s flashback was next.
ReplyDeleteIt was an amazing cultural experience for me too! Never will be like that ever again!! To connect, learn, and share with THAT many people, usually in a friendly and spirited way was unbelievable!
ReplyDeleteNormally these days you can rarely discuss an episode without your opinion getting questioned some people. With LOST everyone welcomed each others opinions and theories which is what I liked.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I hope they do not try and invent the wheel with it!
