The Vampire Diaries - Fade into You - Review
21 Nov 2014
Reviews Vampire Diaries VMAnother week, another very fun, suspenseful, and entertaining episode of The Vampire Diaries! I'm still loving Season 6. A couple of the storylines (Hello, Delena. Hello, Steroline.) need to move forward soon and fast, but otherwise, and especially with regard to the intense reveal of Kai's backstory in detail this week, things are going very well indeed. Let's review and discuss!
Jo and Kai's not-so-heartwarming Thanksgiving memories: The flashbacks to the day Kai massacred a large portion of his family were absolutely chilling, and were scarier than the last few horror movies I've seen. Once more, Chris Wood's performance is one to look forward to every week. His smooth good looks (he looks rather like a 90's Paul Rudd, which is appropriate to the setting he's trapped in!) mask a dreadful and remorseless killer who was ready to kill two adorable children hiding under the bed with a young Jo(sette - what a pretty name) that terrible day. I also loved the actress who played the 22 year old Jo - she was steely about protecting her young siblings in a completely believable manner. As it turned out, those little munchkin twins were none other than Luke and Liv, who started out as somewhat annoying extra characters last season and have now officially evolved into legitimately relevant additions to the show who bring an interesting twist to the story. Their reunion with Jo in the present was both heartbreaking in its angst and confusion, and heartwarming at its sweet possibilities after the siblings had been apart for so long. Sadly, Liv's ongoing struggle against the coven's cruel rules wherein she and Luke must "merge" their powers, causing one of them to die while the other becomes the leader of the group, make it hard for her to accept any form of happiness.
The explanation of the Gemini Coven and the actions of Jo and Kai's father were also fascinating and unsettling. The man cares way too much more about the coven and its frankly ridiculous rules than his own children. While there can never be an excuse for Kai's horrible behavior, surely his parents' "put-the-coven-first" mentality damaged the whole family irreparably and is still impacting Liv and Luke (seriously, Luke, why are you so happy that it's your 22nd birthday?!).
"Ms. Cuddles: 1. Invisible creepy mansion: 0." Bromantic road trip FTW! I absolutely adored seeing Damon, Alaric, and Stefan head to Portland to investigate the roots of the Gemini Coven, just as Bonnie was given a grand tour of the old homestead by Kai in 1994-land. Damon and Alaric discussed Stefan's awkward situation with Caroline (Damon was too awesome, having Ms. Cuddles "say" she'd seen the Steroline situation from a mile away, and she has cotton for brains!). Stefan said he only sees Caroline as a friend. Once you did see her as just your friend, Stefan, but surely things have changed rather obviously now, right? This is taking ages to dawn on him.
Anyway, on their journey to Kai and Jo's childhood home, the trio also came across the father, who was predictably creepy. Damon was again too hilarious saying something like, "I wasn't gonna say anything because [Kai's] your son, but if he comes back, I'll just kill him!" Stefan and Alaric were not going to stand by as Damon fell victim to Kai's dad's witchy shenanigans, and it was terrific to see the guys working together, even discovering that Jo had hidden her magic in a knife on the family property. Unfortunately, this was also discovered by Kai, who figured the connection out once he realized that Bon Bon had hidden her own magic in my favorite very special guest star Ms. Cuddles. Ruh-roh. Now that Kai's decided he only needs Bennett witch blood to do the go-home spell, he's taken the car and ditched a wounded Bonnie. Urgh, I cannot wait to see Bonnie find a way to escape 1994 and hopefully, eventually defeat Kai as well.
Meanwhile, Damon compelled Alaric to get the Ascendent from Jo any way he can, which Ric doesn't want to do for fear of endangering Jo. Aw, I hate seeing more trouble in bromantic paradise for Dalaric. Sigh.
"I'm a vampire. I'm a vampire. I'm a vampire!" Since Elena doesn't love Liam (obvi), it was kind of awkward for her to be in a position of feeling forced to confess her vampiric status to him. Hence, after Liam was hilariously compelled by Caroline to go away while the others discussed the overarching mythology of the show, and Liam was told to shut up by Jo as her father attacked her, Elena was willing to give Jo her blood in front of Liam....but compelled him afterward to forget about it. As far as Liam knows now, Elena's just a classmate and coworker, and a human one at that. I hope that's the end of Liam as a recurring presence on the show, but can we really be that lucky?
Elena and Damon's talk near the end of the episode was really sweet and felt like a nice little bit of progress, with Elena at least admitting that she certainly feels a hint of the feelings for Damon she's lost along with her memories. Yet she says she's still not sure if those potential feelings are worth throwing away her chance at a safe and happy life. Elena, you need to watch the season 4 finale again, mmkay? Anyway, maybe once Bonnie comes back, she can help Elena decide what to do, Elena muses. Alright, Elena, now you're just needlessly stalling! However, Damon recalling how he and Bonnie became friends in 1994-land was fantastic, and so was Elena and Caroline's joy at learning that Bonnie is still alive.
"Just because I hate you doesn't mean I want you to starve to death." After being seriously cute and funny at Friendsgiving dinner (everyone shut off your electronics and say what you're grateful for already!), Caroline brought Stefan some leftovers. Pleasantly, Stefan pulled back the curtain a little further on his emotions, telling Caroline that the reason he shut her out of his life was because she was the one who would have let him sit and cry, which was something he couldn't stand to do after Damon died. This admission left Caroline feeling appropriately thankful and smiley, but then she left before Stefan could say much else. On the one hand, I'm kind of all set with these very-similar scenes of Stefan and Caroline standing and talking and almost moving forward with their relationship, near the end of every episode lately. On the other, at least this scene showed a tiny bit of admittedly glacial progress. I liked Caroline's smile and Stefan's contemplative look after she left. I really do think we're ready for a kiss next time though...what's it going to take, Stefan? Come on.
"They'll have to go through me." Oh my adorable. Tyler and Liv had the cute turned up high as they discussed her awful predicament and its seeming impossibility of having a happy ending. When Liv looks at Tyler, she sees everything she can never have, but Tyler is willing to stand up and help Liv fight the coven's ludicrous agenda. After all, there's no magic in Mystic Falls, so maybe that'll keep the Geminis at bay? Somehow, I doubt it, but "A" for effort, Ty. The part with Tyler and Liv cuddling under the blanket was oddly similar to a Caroline/Tyler scene from late season 2, but all the same, it was a lovely moment between the two.

these shows are turning witches evil aren't they
ReplyDeleteIt was definitely the best episode of the season so far.
ReplyDeleteAll the info
regarding the gemini coven was surprising. The flashback sequences were
brilliantly portrayed!I knew the wonder twins were somehow related to
gemini coven but them turning out to be jo's siblings was surprising.I
absolutely loved all the kai and bonnie stuff.Kai has turned out to be
such a fascinating villain.I am guessing he comes to mystic falls next
episode!I just hope there's some way jo survives the merge whenever it
happens, which will happen no doubt. The road trip was surprisingly fresh
and fun to watch. When the brothers are not at each other's throats all
the time, they are so much fun together.Alaric was dumb enough not to
take vervain after he became human,he would definitely take some time
adjusting.I'm so very glad elena broke off with liam and also came clean
to him before compelling him.Good riddance.Apart from liam's bad
acting, this episode barely had any flaws! A definite thumbs up to the
writers for this installment! Now we have to wait two weeks for the next one!
Yes, I loved this episode too and really enjoyed both the Gemini aspect and the bromantic road trip. True, Ric should have taken vervain for goodness sake! I also hope Jo survives reuniting with Kai, since after this week I like her even more for protecting her siblings so amazingly. :)
ReplyDeleteI always think that about both TVD and The Originals. Most of the witches are totally evil. Luckily, we have Bonnie, Jo, Luke, and Liv to show the better side of witches! :)
ReplyDeleteWhy does Stefan have to develop romantic feelings for Caroline? Why isn't it okay that he doesn't see her in that light? I hate that people are trying to guilt him because he's not into Caroline. It's fine that he doesn't want to be with her and only sees her as friend.
ReplyDeleteThe Liv/Tyler scene didn't work for me because all I could think about was that it was a copy of a Forwood scene and so I didn't like it.
I thought this epi was one of the more relevant ones to the whole story arch of the show. I liked it...didn't love it....
ReplyDeleteI think the show focusing on other supernatural elements will be the best thing for it, given the many seasons it has been on. It is long past time that the show focused on the witches....Vampire Diaries if it is to have any hope of living past this season needs to reinvent itself and invest in exploring other areas of the supe world. That being said, I hope that Kai does not get out....but I am definitely interested in the powers that his father has....whoa nelly, the guy is crazy powerful...even during the early days of the Vamp D, we never saw the Benett witches being anywhere near as ruthlessly powerful. I like this...alot....not soooo fond of Kai or the whole notion of the twins merging....but overall I am liking the new direction. Finally, they are giving me something to tune into week after week....now if they can tamp down on the silly overly simplistic soap romance of the show.
I'm not that into Stefan and Caroline as a couple myself either, but I can see that this is the direction the show seems to be going in...so I feel that they may as well stop procrastinating is all :) Also felt the Tyler/Liv scene was totally a copy of the Caroline/Tyler scene...thought it was cute but they should have mixed it up a little.
ReplyDeleteI'm also really loving the more complex storylines this season with the witches and Kai drama. Reminds me more of the earlier seasons of the show rather than the slower, much less interesting development of the Travelers last season.
ReplyDeleteThe Travelers....ugh. So with you on this girrrrl. What could have been cool about the last season is if they had told their story and at the same time explored the origins of the travelers and their significance in Europe...or even explored the Roma culture, which is hugely steeped in mythology and magic.....this show drives me crazy.....it could have been another scary version of the supe world that ultimately would have been good for the show....
ReplyDeleteThe Travelers storyline did nothing for me at all. I agree, there were ways they could have made it interesting and scary, but those dull chanters were the least frightening TVD villains ever.

ReplyDeleteI pulled up the above citation, to give a glimpse as to how interesting this group of individuals are...to the history of Europe. It is sad that TVD totally squandered this storyline....as they are hugely disenfranchised people in Europe....
The witches on both TVD and TO has always been portrayed as evil.
ReplyDeleteRic knows Damon . He should have saw Damon compelling him from a mile away. Alaric need to start back taking vervain asap!
ReplyDeleteIn season 1,episode 1 of tvd. Caroline liked Stefan when they first met. Stefan told Caroline that it would never happen. I hate that they are trying to put Caroline and Stefan together. I always felt that Stefan will end up with Katherine. I think the show might have planned that as well, but change it due to Caroline's popularity.
ReplyDeleteI've never really thought he'd end up with Katherine, but I certainly don't want him with anyone in Elena's circle of friends. I'd like to see Stefan meet someone new and find happiness with a non-doppelganger.
ReplyDeleteYeah but pretty much first three season are not counted, look at how they pretty much have Stefan and Elena's relationship mean nothing now. witches are everywhere and vampires are weak. I think Plec just changes it up when the shipping is big enough.
ReplyDeleteI did like Stefan and Rebekah, they also have the desires of being mortal and having a family so they were suited together.
ReplyDeleteI always shipped Stefan and Katherine :)
ReplyDeletehuh now that i think about it you're right i guess i meant more prominently than before
ReplyDeleteCan someone clear this up for me-Last episode we saw in the FB that
ReplyDeletekai's father had the ascendent in his hand while he locked his son in
the 1994 purgatory. So,how could kai have that ascendent in the first
place which he showed to binnie and damon. His father would have made
sure that he didn't have any. Please someone help on any theory you have.
Okay.. Im confused. the 1994 reality is a dimension in which Kai is trapped? How then is Jo's Dagger trapped in there with him. Its in our Reality, not his pocket hell. Im utterly confused.
ReplyDeletei found that weird too it's like there's two of everything not exactly smart of the coven to put those things there, well then again without it damon never would've gotten out
ReplyDeleteI think when Kai's father sent Kai to the 1994 alternate dimension, it made a copy of everything that was there that day. Jo's magic that she hid there in that trunk which still was there in the present day. Two ascendants and two Jo's magic.
ReplyDeleteThis episode was a good episode but there were inconsistencies for example, Elena forgetting the fact that Stefan never willfully told her about him being a Vampire. She figured it out herself and needed him to confirm what she already knew (It's not the same scenario like with Liam) so to have Elena ask Stefan how he did it (tell her) was overlooked by the writers. Stefan had no intentions during that time on telling Elena he was a Vampire. She just put the pieces of the puzzle together...😂😄😁😅😂
ReplyDeleteWhen Elena asked Damon what he and Bonnie were doing the 4 months they were together, I sinced some jealously from her (Book Related). This is why all of sudden she's showing a change in attitude towards Damon. That's not love! 😒
She never even thought about Bonnie over the summer. Everything was about Damon. Now she's happy Bonnie's alive????
I also found this confusing, but agree with Rama's conclusion above. I think it's the only explanation :)
ReplyDeleteGood observations! I also thought Elena's attitude about Bonnie and Damon being together all that time was a little odd. After all, why would it be weird that she was happy they had each other? Did she read the books, LOL? :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, this is very interesting. I look forward to reading about this.
ReplyDeleteYa,that makes sense. Thanks so much for clearing this confusion.
ReplyDeleteStefan could have compelled Elena, but he chose to tell her the truth.
ReplyDeleteStefan/Rebekah I felt like worked in the flashbacks pre-Elena, but then in the present day Stefan was just so into Elena that he was fine with killing Rebekah and her entire family so it was clear he didn't really care about her and it would always be all about Elena. I would have liked to have seen more Stebekah in Season 4, but they went with Mabekah instead at the end of the season. I liked Stebekah way more than I've ever liked Steroline.
ReplyDeleteLoved that episode, my favorite one so far. The bromance rocks. Caroline inviting Damon but not Stefan, hilarious! Compelling Alaric was not nice, but as Damon said: Do you have a better idea? That one of the things I love about Damon, he has his loyalty straight. He wants to get Bonnie no matter the costs. But I think, Damon hopes they all can save Jo if Kai returns, but he is ok with risking Jo's life because getting Bonnie is more important to him.
ReplyDeleteIt's also is kind of refreshing to see someone (especially Damon) regarding Bonnie's life as the priority. Usually it's the other way around. Bromance or no bromance, compelling Alaric is pretty innocuous, compared to some of the other things that Damon's done to help Elena. Plus it sounds like Jo's life is in danger whether or not she gives the device to Damien. As Kai's dad aptly figured: if Kai knows what he needs to escape his confinement, then he will escape.
ReplyDeleteDamon and Bonnie never really hated each other, even tough Bonnie had more reason to than Caroline, they have bickered before and I always enjoyed it. They also have been on the same page before when they wanted to safe Elena. I am really looking forward to Damon focussing on saving Bonnie. Too bad that Kai gets out first.
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense? So that would mean that Jo could get double her power then? On another note... Kai killed 4 of his siblings right? So why the hell didnt the coven just kill him? Lure him in sure then Banish him? For a coven where members kill fellow twins to assume leadership they sure pick a strange line to not cross.
ReplyDeleteWhy the hell would jo get double power, she stored her magic elsewhere and the merge was a mere distraction-it never happened. The day was replicated.that's why kai had the same ascendent which is now in the hands of jo in the present day,the same reason there were two hunting knife in the tree stump which the salvaztore brothers found and kai used to stab bonnie. As far as killing kai is concerned,i think his father made an exception for him.He was/is a crazy psychopath sure, but he's also his son.No one actually wants to kill their children if there is some alternative. At that time,he found that alternative in the form of 1994 purgatory. But he couldn't afford to do the same for jo when he found out there is a chance kai could get out and merge with jo.So,he decided to kill her.I am perfectly content with the explanation. But obviously you're not,i can't do anything about that.
ReplyDeleteInteresting point about the writers...it'll be fun to see if they write some further installments of the show. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, Damon has to prioritize in a situation like this. I love his loyalty to Bonnie!
ReplyDeleteAnd I think that when Liv tried to hold the Other Side open when the Other Side was falling apart, her power accidentally sent Bonnie and Damon to the 1994 dimension. We got an explanation that twins born into Gemini Coven that they're gonna be leaders because of their power and it's obvious now that Liv is the strongest of the two. Poor Luke.
ReplyDeleteJo can only double her power if Kai came back from the alternate dimension and took Jo's magic with himself.
ReplyDeleteYa,luke will bite the dust soon!
ReplyDeleteExactly.
ReplyDeleteMeh some good, some bad. But New Orleans witches yeah they're bad. Honestly morality just seems pointless to me now with these shows.
