The Originals - Chasing the Devil's Tail - Review

This week’s episode once again had two major plotlines. First we had Klaus who worked with Ansel to save Elijah from Esther’s mind tricks. Ansel revealed he knew about Hope so Klaus had to kill him to keep the secret. Elijah, after being tormented by his own mind and Esther’s magic, was freed. Across town Hayley, Marcel, Josh, Aiden and Cami all worked together to capture Finn. They succeeded with the help of Jackson. Meanwhile Davina and Kol were trying to find a way to get the dagger to work on Klaus. When Kol tried to steal the white oak stake from Davina, Marcel managed to intercept him. 

Most heartbreaking moment: A lot of people felt that Klaus killing Ansel was out of character or a step back for him but I disagree. We need to remember that he’s known Ansel for two days, that he may or may not be involved in Esther’s plans since she did bring him back from the dead. And then there’s the fact that he left Klaus in Mikael’s hands when he was clearly being abused. Now I get that there may be perfectly good explanations for this and Klaus might have accepted them. Had it not been for his knowledge of Hope. Now Klaus can take care of himself. If Ansel had turned out to be shady, Klaus would’ve been able to deal with it. Hope however is just a baby. Klaus had to choose to trust someone he barely knew with a secret that could kill his daughter. So he chose to play it safe, and killed him. It was obvious that he didn’t truly want to, and felt horrible afterwards, but it if it would keep Hope safe, so be it. Even Elijah understood why he did it, and no doubt would he, Rebekah or Hayley have done the same thing had they been in his position.

Most complicated character: I’m having trouble figuring Kol out. I still don’t quite buy his new found hatred for his siblings, one that he must clearly have if he’s siding with Esther and Finn (who last I checked, he couldn’t stand). There’s nothing in between his death and their latest reunion that explains it. They weren’t on the greatest terms, but those terms were a hell of a lot better than his last encounter with his mother (and Finn). Him wanting to dagger his brother on the other hand, I do get. I’m sure all of the siblings have wanted to do that over the past millennium. His relationship with Davina is an interesting one. I’m not gonna lie, from the moment this show started, Kol and Davina have been a crack ship of mine. I always thought they might be a cute couple. Now however, it’s his sincerity that worries me. One minute he’s all into her, the next he’s eyeing the white oak stake. We don’t know if he actually took it since Marcel swooped in, but I’d like to believe he didn’t. Even though Kol clearly fears Esther. 

Best plan: It was a good plan, and would’ve gone a lot smoother if Aiden hadn’t been discovered. Finn has immediately been added to my I-hate-you-list for hurting Josh, but I did think Josh’s scenes with Aiden were very cute (really wish they’d get more airtime). I have clearly underestimated Finn’s feelings towards Cami. I mean, he almost stood up to his mother for her, may not be much but for Finn that means something. He did not see Cami being in on the plan coming. On a side-note, I found it hilarious that it took all this planning to take down Finn, yet Marcel had no problem grabbing Kol all by himself without any plan at all. 

Favorite moment: The scene with Klaus and mini-Elijah might be one of my favorite Klaus moments to date. We rarely see Klaus being so open, even with his siblings. It’s usually always Elijah who has to tear Klaus away from his darkest self. However this time the roles were reversed. This scene is why I, and probably most of the viewers, watch this show: because of the relationship between the Original siblings. With all the fighting between them, we haven’t gotten of these sweet, emotional moments. And I think that’s a damn shame. 

Best ending: So I’m not sure what Esther’s plan is with Cami, surely it has something to do with revenge for the little present Klaus left her (glorious moment if you ask me). But I always take special notice when a human gets fed vampire blood. 50% of the time, it’ll end with a new vampire. Although I think Esther has something more torturous in mind. The other element to the ending of the episode was Marcel and Hayley’s presents. Klaus’ smile was priceless. 

What I need: Not much actually. Rebekah is coming back next week (hooray), all I need there is for her to not be put in someone else’s body. I still miss Nate as Kol, I don’t think I could handle anyone but Claire portraying Rebekah. One more thing I need is some Davina and Josh moments, maybe including some over protectiveness on Josh’s part in regards to Kol.

Josh: “Sweet! A box of dusty old objects. We’re saved!” 
Kol: “She’s never going to trust me if she thinks I’m just a flying monkey to the wicked witch. I’ve got it handled, mother.” 
Hayley: “Jack, I think the girl that you were waiting on was Andrea Labonair, mythic revolutionary. You got Hayley Marshall, a knocked-up tomboy with a bad attitude. You got dealt a crappy hand.” 
Klaus: “We are the demons lurking in shadows. We are the savage villains in fairy tales told to children. But not for my child. Not for Hope. In her story, we are the knights in shining armor. Without you by my side I don’t think I can survive my own love for my daughter. I need you. I need you, brother.”
