The Fall - Episode 2.01 - Advance Preview + Dialogue Teasers

This Thursday sees the return of BBC Two’s hotly anticipated, and highly controversial, drama The Fall. Last season earned it the tag ‘the most repulsive drama ever broadcast on British TV’, I can but wonder what the Daily Mail will come up with this year as we delve ever deeper into the psychology of the warped mind of Paul Spector as he stalks the streets of Belfast. Fans of the show will be delighted to know that it is as dark and contentious as before, creator Allan Cubitt hasn’t toned down the material in response to the criticism, but nor has he sensationalised it either.

Due to the nature of the program the BBC are, rightly, being very careful about too much information getting out about the episode. They should be enjoyed without too much being spoiled, so this preview will not be revealing any big twists or secrets at all. I can say that we pretty much start up were we left from last year’s cliff-hanger; a traumatised Annie Brawley has woken up and is attempting to help the police identify her attacker. Whilst Spector has so far kept to the promise he made to DSI Gibson in his phone call, it has been long ten days therefore it’s likely that he will crack soon...especially as the profile information she gave him has no doubt been playing on his mind.

Allan Cubitt takes on the direction for all six episodes this year as well as scripting and producing the series, this makes for a tightly drafted story that slowly builds to some of the most unsettling scenes you will have seen on TV this year. What makes it worse is that you know what is coming; Cubitt has said that one of the core points of the show is to explore the “dramatic irony that the audience know more than the police.” This first instalment of season two may not enthral new viewers due to its slow build-up of tension, but it does its job admirably in reintroducing the characters and setting up the themes and major arc for the season ahead.

Episode 2.01 airs on BBC Two and BBC Two HD on Thursday 13th November at 9pm. Below are a few dialogue teasers to see you through until then. Don't forget to come back to vote in our poll after the episode and let us know what you thought.

“I don’t think you’ve got anything to worry about”

“Now let’s try something different”

“I understand it will be a difficult conversation, but there are bigger issues”

“Is that why I’m here, to amuse you?”

“It’s been ten days Stella, we’re running out of time”

“Some people find writing useful”

“There are so many if onlys”

“You’re not welcome”

“Keep your crazy theories to yourself”

“I’m really worried Daddy”
