The 100 - Many Happy Returns - Review: "An Absolute Stunner"

The all-new episode of The CW's The 100 was an absolute stunner.

Each writing and directing their second episodes respectively, Kim Shumway and P.J. Pesce put together another excellent hour of television, titled "Many Happy Returns". The rapid storyline development was beautifully blended with plenty of intense, action-filled moments, leading into what looks to be another hard-hitting episode next week.

The fourth episode of the season, and just the seventeenth in the series' history, had series regulars Lincoln, Abby and Kane, Jasper and Monty go unsighted, making way for the return of Chancellor Jaha. The hour wasted no time digging into Jaha's dilemma, with a young, disfigured boy, Zoren, coming across a lifeless body in the desert, which later led to the introduction of a new group of nomads trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

Zoren's mother, Sienna, greeted Jaha when he woke, and revealed she, her husband and her son, abandoned their tribe because they did not support the ritual of letting newborns affected by radiation live in order to help cleanse the bloodline. The trio were aiming to reach the "City of Light" - a place which cannot be pinpointed currently, though we understand the trio along with Jaha are currently in the "Dead Zone". Unfortunately for Jaha, the trio who saved him also sold him out, cashing in on a bounty for the capture of "sky people" in return for a horse to help them reach the City of Light.

It looks like Jaha will be in a pickle for a few more weeks yet, as the desert seems a world away from the dense forest that the rest of the characters call home. But the mystery surrounding this world has only deepened, with the story behind the desert nomads, and the mystery behind the City of Light being beautifully introduced.

In other news, the guest appearances of Dichen Lachman came to an end last night, but not before doing a fantastic job as Anya once again. Last week saw her and Clarke successfully escape from the horrors of Mt Weather, only for Anya to take Clarke prisoner with the intentions of giving her to her colony of Grounders. The duo were racing against time as the Mountain Men followed their trail with impossible precision, which led Clarke to believe they were being tracked. She was right, with Anya discovering one embedded in her arm. She wasted no time removing it, opting to simply take it, and a chunk of her arm, out using her teeth. The pain tolerance of the Grounders must be through the roof!

Later, the ever resourceful Clarke, who earlier managed to score a tranquilizer dart, used that to subdue her enemy. What followed was one of the best, and most violent fight scenes I've seen on television, as Lachman and Eliza Taylor put on a fantastic show as their characters battled to the death. Clarke had the chance, but the sight of a balloon climbing over the mountains saw her and Anya head in that direction, successfully arriving at Camp Jaha, whose guards opened fire by accident, ending Anya's journey. As the face of the Grounders besides Lincoln, this was tough to swallow, but it proves the series' creative team, led by Jason Rothenberg, are delivering on their promise of ensuring no one is safe. It leaves the door open for a new face for the Grounders to rise up - something I'm very much looking forward to seeing.

The most surprising moment in last night's hour was the reuniting of siblings Octavia and Bellamy. Earlier, Bellamy, along with Finn, Murphy, Sterling and Monroe, had come across the decimated remains of one of the Ark's broken stations. Trapped on the edge of a cliff, Mel cried out for help, with Sterling obliging, though a poorly tied knot sent him on the way to a very sudden stop. Kudos to the creative team here, who, for once, let the all-too-common, all-too-predictable, last second save someone on the end of the rope by grabbing it in time trick, not eventuate, with fatal consequences! I had to restrain myself from leaping out of my chair once I saw Sterling hit the bottom because I was that pleased to see someone actually die like that.

Despite losing one over the edge, Bellamy was not content with leaving Mel there to meet that same fate. After the group fashioned a crude rope from the surrounding debris, he himself went over the edge, successfully rescuing Mel, but not before the rope snapped, followed by a hail of Grounder arrows and spears. Clearly, the guy who biffed the spear in the series premiere that almost killed Jasper, can't have been among the Grounder army, which were warded off by an impeccably timed horn blast from none other than Octavia. The siblings, now reunited, decide to accompany Mel and Monroe back to Camp Jaha while Finn and Murphy soldier on in an attempt to locate the remaining members of the 100.

Another duo saw development last night. Raven and engineer Wick fought several verbal duels, with a defiant Raven refusing to try out a leg brace Wick had constructed. They were initially charged with establishing a communications link to help find out what had happened to the other Ark stations. Instead, they came up with a helium-filled balloon instead, which didn't go down well with Major Byrne. However, it did get seen by Clarke, leading her and Anya in the right direction. While I don't see any chemistry between Wick and Raven, it's good to know she's not alone on the mechanical front, and will be more useful to the group now that she can stand and walk more or less unaided.

There's a lot going on, and it's great to watch, but it's hard to keep up with at times, so here's a rough status guide. We have Bellamy and Octavia reunited, and heading back to Camp Jaha. Jaha himself is with the desert nomads. Raven and Abby remain at Camp Jaha, with Kane out looking to establish peace with the Grounders. Finn and Murphy are continuing the search for their friends, and Clarke has made it to Camp Jaha. Murphy and Jasper continue inside Mt Weather, where Lincoln is being held captive.

The episode left us with a powerful statement from Clarke. Despite nearing death against Anya, the girl showed maturity beyond her years. As she released Anya upon reaching Camp Jaha, she said "Our only chance against Mt Weather is if we fight together. To beat them we will need our technology, and your knowledge of this world." Clarke couldn't be closer to the truth. She is the only one who understands who the real enemies are, and what needs to be done to stop them. At the moment, it's a very steep uphill battle, but someone has to lead the way.

Before I call it a day, congratulations to the awesome costume, make-up, special effects, and set design departments on The 100. On top of a great cast and writing, the series always looks amazing!

  1. I think the City of Light is a post-apocalyptic New York...

If Jaha is to be kept linked to rest of the story, he couldn't have landed too far from the other Arc people. And New York is what? 500kms away from Mount Weather? Distant enough to have Jaha develop his own storyline, but close enough to keep the possibility of him coming back among his people.

Besides, there is that Statue of Liberty appearing in the (awesome) credits, around the time Bob Morley's name is on screen. With only the head and the torch above sand, the new name makes sense.

  2. Interesting theories. I was thinking the obvious place would be New York as well. But that leads to the question, why was New York bombed initially? Could it have been Washington instead?

  3. yeah rothenberg confirmed that jaha's in Manhattan

  4. Man! I love your reviews, it's perfectly spot on!

LOVED the Anya/Clarke fight scene, it was powerful, and kudos to the show for actually giving us action instead of just stale adventure, and drama like most shows out there!

got to admit, I enjoyed Jaha's scenes the most! they were a nice change from Jaha in the ark diaries

Officially can't wait for the reunion of Clarke/Abbey, and Clarke/Octavia/Bellamy!

sorry but I found Finn a bit annoying, I can see the urgency but not the hastiness to make decisions by him! it shows why I like Bellamy tons more!

I enjoyed Wick or whatever his name, a nice addition indeed!

    now ratings! please go up!

  5. Thanks! You can get an email every time I post a review with the new email feature just above the comments!

Agree on all your points - Finn had to take a back seat last night which meant nothing really happened to him, unlike all the other characters. Him and Murphy together will be interesting to watch given their ideals clash

  6. oh! that's a cool feature, didn't notice it there :p

I always thought Bellamy and Murphy had more chemistry than Bellamy/Finn, but now since you mentioned it; I'd like to see that too! but I don't think there would be much clashing as there's a new Finn now, he was willing to drop his moral obligations to save his friends, and seeing the Murphy lacks nothing more than conscience, they'd be buddies in no time!

  7. I don't know the gap between there differing ideologies seems to lessening though Finn might not last once Clarke though it be hard for him to just go back to that.

  8. Amazing review! Another great episode.

I really love this show and pray it gets more seasons! It certainly deserves it.
This is a show that always keeps you on the edge of your seat. I did not see Anya´s death coming, that certainly was a big surprise!I guess it was her time to go.

I am glad that Bellamy and Octavia reunited, it was sweet but it could have been a longer scene. Other than that perfect. Love the save by the horn! Clarke´s journey was spot on too.

I can´t wait until Octavia and Jasper see each other again also. I miss their connection and dynamic together. Hope the writers do revisit that. I wonder when and where they will see each other again.

  9. Wow, you don't see chemistry between Wick and Raven? I feel like your the only one who's said that. On tiwtter and everywhere last night people were going crazy shipping them saying how much chemistry they had.

Still pissed about Anya!!! I wanted more of her with Clarke. Their fight scene was the best thing ever. Loved that scene where Clarke saw her name at the dropship.

Only part of the episode I wasn't crazy over was the grouping of Bellamy and the rest. I understand what the writers were doing, showig how the role reversal of Finn and Bellamy. Bellamy the hero while Finn didn't want to waste time saving the girl. BUT I feel like they could have shown us that in a more interesting way, instead of wasting the whole storyline on saving a red shirt we never met.

Still loved the episode though! This season is amazing!

  10. I didn't like Finn last season and I don't like him now, although he is certainly getting more INTERESTING.
Last season he was the naive hopeful guy who got two people killed in the crash and didn't seem to feel the slightest bit of guilt. Which is super annoying because he was quick enough to shame anyone resorting to violence for the rest of the season even though THEY actually had a GOOD reason to be reckless with other people's lives.
This season, he is becoming unhinged and that's make him Dangerous. But not in a good, interesting, what-a-badass way. More in a OMG-he-will-get-us-all-killed way. Kane is on a diplomatic mission for peace under the assumption that they have their people prisoner. And Finn is out there shooting up grounders to find them. This is going to lead to some big misunderstanding, like last season, and war between the two groups is going to start again. How much do you want to bet that in the middle of the negotiation, the grounders get news that an entire village or something was killed by Finn and Murphy?

  11. Great review! I second you in congratulating the crew of this show. They manage to bring the different worlds within the show come alive so vividly. Each group is markedly different from the other and I was most impressed with the styling of the group in the desert!

I'm terribly sad to see Anya go ... but like you said, it will be interesting to see who will rise up in Anya's place and forge an alliance with the Sky people ... I really hope Indra is involved. She is such a badass ... I'm dying to see more of her!

  12. The 100 is so good that not watching it is disrespectful at this point, so I really hope the ratings keep increasing.

Finn is going to a dark place, which makes him way more interesting than before.
Sibling's reunion! How long until they find out about Lincon's fate?
And wow for the show killing Anya! I called it like 2 seconds before they did it, but it was still a bit shocking.

I'm pleasently surprised by how they are handleling all these multiple storylines at the same time: last season we had what happened on Earth and what happened on the Ark, now it has gone to cover way more ground and The 100 is doing an amazing job at it.

Seriously, this must be one of the best- if not the best- shows on TV right now

  13. A moment of silence for our fallen comrades: Sterling and Anya.

Looks like the theme song for The 100 should be a little something like this*: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64tOb0IqWZo

*And yes for the mini-Neighbours reunion redux! :D

  14. Probably there were more people living in New York than in DC.

  15. Great review.
The 100 .......Just gets better and better each week !! What an amazing show !!

    * Octavia to the rescue ! Good to see the sibs back t'gether.
    * Anya & Clarke - everything !! ..... 'You fought well'
    * Bellamy giving Murphy a gun .... 'Watch his back'
    * Clarke releasing Anya .... Only to be gunned down by The Adults
    * Jaha's desert adventures are NO day at the beach !

    - 'The Commander was my 2nd' ..... A way for Clarke to have her Own Audience ?
    - Wouldn't want to be Byrne when Abby finds out what's been done to Clarke !
    - No : Abby, Kane, MtW Hostages Monty & Jasper, and worst of all No Lincoln !!!

    Is it Wednesday yet ?!?!
