JODY MILLS RETURNS — Jody Mills (guest star Kim Rhodes) reluctantly attends a mandatory sheriff’s retreat and is partnered with an overeager sheriff named Donna (guest star Briana Buckmaster) who wants to bond. Just as Jody thinks things can’t get any worse, a body with just strings of meat and skin hanging off the bones is discovered. While the local sheriffs blame an animal attack, Jody knows better and calls Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles). Tim Andrew directed this episode with teleplay by Jenny Klein and story by Jenny Klein & Phil Sgriccia (#1008). Original airdate 12/2/2014.

I think this is the episode with the J2s had about five days off during filming. I'm not really interested in insta-hunter Jodi or Sheriff Donna, or any episode devoted to and written for guest stars just so the Js can have time off. I'll qualify by saying that I do like Kim Rhodes as an actress, I just don't feel that episodes should be written specifically for support characters. Support characters should be used to support a Winchester story.
ReplyDeleteI understand your point, but, respectfully, how else then would the boys get time off? Unless the answer should be that they DON'T get time off... but that would probably be part of the conditions for the Js going forward with the show at this point in their lives.
ReplyDeletePersonally I'd rather watch the two sheriffs than, say, an episode that is heavy on Castiel and Crowley (whom I love, don't get me wrong). Unless they pair Castiel WITH Crowley and it becomes a bromantic quasi-comedy episode... I'd get on board for that.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree and I love Sheriffs Jody and Donna (best character to come out of The Purge). Plus I'd expect 'non-caricature' small town Sheriff's to be more physically adept than characters like the Charlie- or Krissy- Sue's. Small town Sheriff's have to be accustomed to doing most of their own investigative work, too, given that their staffs including other officers, are smaller.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think they work an absolute minimum these days, ranging from 8 to 18 minutes per episode. I don't mind support characters, but I do mind scripts written specifically for support characters with the Js as background noise. I want support characters to actually SUPPORT the J2s.
ReplyDeleteI like Kim Rhodes...a lot...and I used to like Jodi Mills, the character, up until they made her an insta-hunter and started devoting scripts specifically to showcase her and specifically to give the J2s time off.
ReplyDeleteJodi has training as a cop and heads her team, she's helped the boys out on several cases and sent several cases their way. I do essentially agree with you but J2 want a solid block of time off in the show's twilight years, I'd rather have an occasional Jody-centric episode than Charlie or Krissy Sue-centric, both characters who at worse show the boys how less intelligent or inferior as Hunters as them (especially Sam). Heck, I'd rather the show hadn't killed off Agent Henriksen just as he was acknowledging that monsters were real - he'd have made a great FBI Agent/Hunter, too.
ReplyDeleteJody knows when she's over head and and - in the synopsis - calls Sam and Dean for help. Of course there's still going to be the Sam and Dean-lighter Castiel and now Crowley heavier episodes that are also written to give J2 breaks.
