After MTV announced that the network’s Scream adaptation had been picked up to series, news spread that the show did not have the rights to use the iconic Ghostface mask that is synonymous with the franchise. You may have been one of the many fans scratching your head wondering: How is this Scream without the Scream mask?! EW has the scoop:
In an effort to subvert expectations and create a wholly unique experience, the series has created a mask of its own. Similarly inspired by the Edvard Munch painting, the show’s mask will have a more, ahem, organic feel. (Early word is that it’ll be made of flesh, but TPTB are still developing it.)
“It’s a darker, almost more grounded, evolved version of the mask,” says Mina Lefevre, MTV’s senior vice president and head of scripted development. “It’s something we’re constantly talking about. How did that mask become that mask? What’s its purpose? How did it evolve? If the Scream movie mask was the more plastic version, for a lack of a better description, this one is a more organic looking and frankly darker version.”

So it's gonna look like the classic Ghostface mask, but not? Weird choice.
ReplyDeleteLooks pretty much the same to me, just more droopy.
ReplyDeleteThe picture with the article is from "Scream 2". They're still developing/designing the mask for the show.
ReplyDeleteThat's the actual ghostface mask.
ReplyDeleteokay...erm...it's the same, so I'm good I guess
ReplyDeleteI'm so conflicted about this show. I miss Sidney, Gale and Dewey!
ReplyDeleteI hear ya. I'm definitely going to check out the show, but I'm conflicted about some of these changes.
ReplyDeleteIt's not. That's the original ghostface mask.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds even better!
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know how this show is going to work? Like is it going have new characters each season or carry on with whoever survived from the previous season?
that's why I mentioned the de-humanization due to the flesh that will come, I know that this isn't the actual mask
ReplyDeleteYou edited that in later.
ReplyDeleteIt's still early (the article mentions the writers haven't started yet), but I'd wager yes, the season will have survivors and they'll be joined by new characters if the show gets another year.
ReplyDeleteIt did make me a little nervous that they talked about going for a darker kind of horror. "Scream" isn't "Saw", you know?
ReplyDeleteyeah, I didn't know wich post you ment :P
ReplyDeleteI got it out wrong at first because I was confused as well
exactly, Scream is a personal story about personal revenge. Meanwhile Saw was a envious man forcing people to appreciate life or die
ReplyDeleteblasphemy! ghostface rocked. this sucks
ReplyDeleteyou don't corrupt a classic
I was talking more about the level of gore. A mask made out of human flesh leans more towards "Saw" than "Scream", you know?
ReplyDeleteI supported this show, but now this is pretty stupid.
ReplyDeletewell that depends who the mask is made of, if it was a personal enemy of the new killer that might very well make sense.
ReplyDeleteYou mean that you dislike the idea of Scream turning into a gore-fest, right? I think the horror industry has been moving away from gore lately and turned back to possessions and demonic rituals. I'd me more afraid of them turning it into Conjuring 2,0
I think that show has a good shot to bring back the Slasher genre
The image I have is of the mask being stitched together from various swatches of skin, a la Leatherface.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping the show is a shot in the arm of the slasher genre because I am bored to tears by the possession/creepy kid ghosts/haunted house stuff we've been getting more recently.
And one thing I always liked about "Scream" was the mystery aspect - who is it behind that mask and what is their motive? Sounds like the series is sticking with that.
I won't say I'm 100% on board with this idea, but my glad my fears that they were going to eliminate a masked killer altogether were for naught.
ReplyDeleteI actually enjoyed this years horror entries (most of them). "As above, so below" was actually pretty damn entertaining and Annabelle was half good.
ReplyDeleteI agree though, I want them to bring back the slasher genre big style, they tried with Scream 4 though and failed (it wasn't a bad movie tbh).
The only thing I'm scared for is Ash vs. The Evil Dead and Scream destroying each other.
As for the mask, wait and see, I'm still not reassured about it but I'm hoping for the best.
btw. a Texas Chainsaw show would be neat, world needs more Leatherface
The only slashers I like are Scream and the original I Know What You Did, but it because they know perfectly well how ridiculous the genre is, and because they were intelligent (relatively speaking) and were good satires. I dread the day slasher films totally replace supernatural-based horror (which of course would just be a passing phase, but a sucky one).
ReplyDeleteBut if this show can keep the spirit of the Scream franchise, I'm totally gonna enjoy it.
If they could get Neve Campbell to do a guest stint somehow I'd BE SO FREAKIN HAPPY!
ReplyDeleteI don't think any one sub-genre of horror should dominate. But I can't remember the last slasher that was released in theaters while, every year, I see a trailer for a ghost/possession/creepy ghost kids movie that I could have sworn came out the year before. Let's see some variety.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if the show is even set in Woodsboro.
ReplyDeleteGhostface is iconic and shouldn't be changed. I'll give the show a chance to see what they come up with.
ReplyDeleteThey could just use a plain white sheet and call it a day. We would all get the drift.
ReplyDeleteNo! Scream without Scream mask isn´t Scream. The original mask was just the right amount of scary, but ordinary enough to be bought in store without incrimating the killer.
