A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great scenes that we've seen recently on TV.
ARROW, "Draw Back Your Bow", November 19, 2014, Actors: Stephen Amell and more
The Scene: Oliver sees Felicity and Ray kissing
Diana Mack: This breaks my heart.
BONES, "The Puzzler in the Pit", November 20, 2014, Actors: Carla Gallo, David Boreanaz and more, The Scene: Daisy delivers her son with the entire team by her side
Klutzy girl: I love that they're rallying around her and determined to help with the baby because they loved Sweets so much. And although it was cliche and I saw it coming a mile away, naming the baby Seeley Lance was sweet. Booth holding him for the first time was also pretty cute.
CHICAGO FIRE, "Chopper", November 18, 2014, Actors: Joe Minoso, Jesse Spencer and more
The Scene: The firehouse goes to Cruz' Zumba class (picked by Ben Norton)
CONSTANTINE, "Danse Vaudou", November 21, 2014, Actors: Angélica Celaya, Emmett J. Scanlan, The Scene: Zed sees a glimpse of Jim Corrigan's future
Nirat Anop: Zed and Jim Corrigan work together and then she sees a glimpse of his future. I really enjoyed their scenes as it gave the audience a little more inside on the character of 'Zed Martin' whom Angelica Celaya is portrayed wonderfully. Zed talking to the ghost though which we learnt some things about her and then running him over was incredibly brave. I also liked her exchange with Constantine in the hotel lobby where she informed us she doesn't like Champagne, these two characters have such great chemistry and it's great to see play on screen. Papa Midnite and Constantine working together was great too! Papa is more human than most villains, he really cares for his people as evident in the episode but learning about Zed is really intriguing as she's quite mysterious, we still don't know a lot about her as with Chas. However at the end of the episode, Zed seeing a glimpse Jim Corrigan's future was awesome, we are on the road to seeing The Spectre which I really look forward too and the visual effects were really great. Using Zed as the vessel to foreshadow Jim's future was a great literary device, her visions are always a highlight for me.
GOTHAM, "Harvey Dent", November 17, 2014, Actors: Sean Pertwee, Camren Bicondova, David Mazouz, The Scene: Cat interrupts Bruce and Alfred's boxing
Sandi: Sean Pertwee is never in enough scenes for me in this show, I think he's fab as Alfred and I really enjoy his mentorship of young Bruce. This scene in particular really reminded me of his dad for some reason, which is possibly one of the reasons it stood out so much to me. But I also liked the way he always very protective over his master, he has a quick and wicked tongue on him. I'm glad he came to realise over the course of the episode that he could be more relaxed about Cat being in the house and making friends with Bruce, yet we all know that his first instincts are more or less correct.
GRACEPOINT, "Episode Eight", November 20, 2014, Actors: Michael Peña, Virginia Kull and more, The Scene: The Solanos go bowling
Tonya Papanikolas: This was such a normal scene that held so much meaning. It drew its power from the mundane. A family that had lost as much as this one would be trying to find any kind of normalcy they could – and they did here. The scene was both realistic and extremely touching. Because of all the pain they’d experienced, it was great to see them bond together, to enjoy each other’s company as a family and draw strength from one another. The upbeat music set the perfect tone. In a show that is always serious and sad, the scene emphasized that they could find happy moments in the midst of their pain. They needed each other and it was not only okay to seek out moments of joy, it was crucial to their family moving forward. In this moment, they were there for each other. The parents took time for their daughter who needed them. Everybody strengthened each other. Even as Chloe has to decide if she will break Danny’s record, we see that Danny is not forgotten but it’s okay to continue on with life. Unlike the other mother who couldn’t move on after her child was murdered, the Solanos are choosing to move forward, to pull together and strengthen each other as they go on. Beth also does this when she acknowledges being healthy for her baby. Moving forward is a choice – and they were choosing to take one step at a time and help each other through it. The fact that this scene would have been so normal for anyone else made it even more powerful.
HAWAII FIVE 0, "Ka Hana Malu (Inside Job)", November 21, 2014, Actors: Carol Burnett and more, The Scene: Aunt Deb and Leonard get married at the end (picked by Ben Norton)
HOMELAND, "Halfway to a Donut", November 16, 2014, Actors: Claire Danes, Mandy Patinkin
The Scene: Carrie talks Saul out of killing himself
Bradley Adams: Woah. I was on the verge of shouting "No!" at my screen here. I really thought Saul was going to off himself. This was a fantastic scene that really showed the connection between the two.
HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER, "Kill Me, Kill Me, Kill Me", November 20, 2014, Actors: Viola Davis, Alfred Enoch, Tom Verica, The Scenes: The last scene & Annalise and Sam argue
Tonya Papanikolas: Now THAT was an ending scene! What a great twist. I didn't see it coming that Annalise knew about Sam's body since we'd earlier heard her voice on a phone call wondering where Sam was. Then it turns out that phone call was part of the cover-up, too. It intrigued me that Annalise wasn't at all upset that her students had killed Sam. She was finally over him, his lies and the way he treated her. The scene made me really excited to find out what comes next. The students and their professor are all in this together now. A great ending scene to the winter finale! Also picked by Jamie Coudeville
Jimmy Ryan: How To Get Away With Murder ended its sublime first half of its season with an incredible finale on Thursday night. Unsurprisingly, my favorite scene from the episode was the very last one, as we see Wes return to the Keating home, and apologizing to Tom's dead body only to find Annalise sitting at her desk, saying "Don't be."
Diana Mack: Shonda did a great job with her shows, as always she's the queen of Thursday night!
Klutzy girl: I honestly didn't see that Annalise knew coming at all but I bet she helped cover the murder up. Bradley Adams: Annalise and Sam argue.
MARVEL'S AGENTS OF SHIELD, "The Things We Bury", November 18, 2014, Actors: Brett Dalton and more, The Scenes: The final scene & Christian finally admits the truth
Justyna Kubica: Another great episode this week. Coulson met Skye's father, Agent Carter showed up in a flashback and we got a backstory for Whitehall that ended in a surprising reveal of Skye's mother (Dichen Lachman!). The most memorable moment for me would be the ending when Whitehall, Ward and Skye's dad, the Doctor (I don't like calling him that, I need a name) meet. All three men have their own secrets and motivations, and we learn that Whitehall is responsible for Skye's mother (brutal and horrifying) death and is actually Doctor's real target. I can't wait to see how things are going to play out with all of them involved. Things just got even more intense and crazy. Sidenote, Kyle MacLachlan is doing a great job on the show so far. Mystery and action seem to follow him. Already excited to see what's next.
Klutzy girl: The look of relief on Grant's face after he confesses was heartbreaking because he's been blaming himself - courtesy of others - this entire time and it wasn't his fault. Brett knocked this episode out of the park, and Tim was pretty great too.
ONCE UPON A TIME, "Smash the Mirror", November 16, 2014, Actors: Jennifer Morrison, Georgina Haig, The Scene: Elsa tells Emma that she must love herself
Nirat Anop: I honestly wouldn't know where to start. For me, the 2 hour episode of Once Upon a Time was more about the character development, if you read my really long post on the What did you think of... Poll you would know that this was quite an episode. One that was beautifully scripted with powerful character development that were very heartfelt and moving. The realisations of Rumple and Mary Margaret stood out to me as did many others. Mary Margaret telling Regina that "she's not all that good and she's not all that bad" was very impressive, the character work and that very thin line between good and bad on OUAT has been continuously challenged but this truly highlight "evil isn't born" it's made, it's a product of our environment and we have the capacity to change, that is however our choice. Rumple admitting to Emma that she always did the right thing, was slightly heartbreaking because he is fully aware of his actions and Belle isn't and it's power that he thrives on which overpowers any capacity for him to change, for now. This self realisations is incredible. The parallels to Frozen were lovely. Seeing Ingrid freeze the castle was very similar to the end of Frozen when everything began to freeze. Seeing the hall of the Arrendelle Palace was a carbon copy of Frozen's Arendelle Palace as was the portrait of Anna & Elsa's parents. However, my favorite besides the happiness between Regina and Robin Hood in her family crypt lied between an exchange of Anna and Elsa. Elsa is one the most popular female leads from the animated feature film 'Frozen'. She was scared, vulnerable but her love for her sister was what resonated with the millions of people around the world. Seeing her brought to OUAT and admitting that she had learnt to love herself was powerful. Embracing who you are, loving yourself is a difficult challenge, how can someone love themselve when everyone around them is dismissive, cruel and unkind towards them. In today's society there is a perception of how people are supposed to act, we are socially constructing our identity on the basis of our peers and the media so embracing our uniqueness is absolutely beautiful and I applaud the writers for this. Elsa reaching out to Emma was brave and unconditionally loving, she wasn't afraid of the repercussions, she was a true friend, one who put others before herself and I will always admire her for that.
PERSON OF INTEREST, "Point of Origin", November 18, 2014, Actors: Cara Buono and more, The Scenes: Martine finds Shaw & Martine takes out the barman and his henchmen with the shotgun
Justyna Kubica: What a great cliffhanger! Really makes you excited for the next episode even more. Martine locates Shaw at the end, despite the fact that Samaritan didn't. Not only it's the end of Shaw's undercover job and identity, putting her life in an imminent threat but it can potentially expose the rest of the team and once again change everything. The show has a great talent with adapting to change so I have no doubts it's going to be quite an interesting challenge. But I do worry that the time to lose another important character is getting closer. But for now, Team Machine vs Team Samaritan fight officially starts. Already can't wait!
DarkUFO: Martine takes out the barman and his henchmen with the shotgun. Also picked by Bradley Adams
REIGN, "Terror of the Faithful", November 20, 2014, Actors: Megan Follows, Torrance Coombs, The Scene: Catherine talks to Bash about the twins
Sandi: I'm not sure what's going on with this plot really, especially after the nanny/Henry reveal a few episodes back. I'm guessing it's all in Catherine's head due to her grief/guilt and the amount she is drinking at present. It's been played out well though, and they haven't teased it out for too long. The reveal this week that it was Claude that killed the twins when they were babies just makes her even more of an unlikable brat than she was already.
SCANDAL, "Where the Sun Don't Shine", November 20, 2014, Actors: Kerry Washington, Scott Foley, Joe Morton, The Scenes: Olivia tells Jake she's choosing herself & Rowan and Olivia's confrontation
Tonya Papanikolas: Olivia tells Jake she's choosing herself. I really enjoyed this scene. We never get to see Olivia Pope let loose. She is always very controlled and deliberate. But this time she starts dancing, showing how she's letting go and being free. After her father gets away, she needs to do that in order to keep going. She needs to forget about all the craziness around her and focus on herself. And then when Jake says he's in love with her, she gives an unexpected response that becomes very poignant. Instead of answering him with gratefulness or even surprise, she answers him with statements about how she wants lives with both Jake and Fitz. She's not going to choose between them. She is choosing herself and what SHE needs for once. And Jake has to either accept that or leave the "dance floor." Olivia held all the power in this scene and she wasn't abusing it. She wasn't trying to be rude or manipulative. She was simply being honest with herself and Jake. There was such a freedom in making and voicing that choice and deciding not to feel guilty about anything. Kerry Washington portrayed that beautifully. I thought the whole scene was extremely well done.
Diana Mack: Rowan and Olivia's confrontation - it's always a powerful scene.
THE 100, "Human Trials", November 19, 2014, Actors: Eliza Taylor, Bob Morley, Thomas McDonell and more, The Scenes: Finn massacres half of Lincoln's village & Clarke reunites with Bellamy and Octavia
Justyna Kubica: First of all, what a fantastic season it is! Another brilliant episode this week and it was impossible to pick just one scene for the article. There were so many intense, emotional, memorable moments like: Clarke's reunion with her mom, Clarke and Bellamy's talk about Finn and their past choices, Finn's shocking final act and more. In the end, I decided to choose Clarke's reunion with Bellamy and Octavia. It was such a lovely scene (that I've been hoping to see since season one finale), it shows such a great development for the characters and their friendship and it means the three are back together, it certainly makes them stronger whenever they work as a team. I still can't believe this Bellamy is the same person we met back in the pilot. Such a powerful change and he's one of my favorite characters now. Between all the pain, fight and death it always means so much to see the moments like that, so honest and heartwarming, especially when you think how the episode ends. Such a tragic thing, there really are no words to describe it. Can't wait to see what's going to happen now. It's sad to say but I can no longer see a happy ending for Finn. Kudos to cast and crew for their amazing work on the series!
Wilson Crawford: Finn uncharacteristically massacres half of Lincoln's village looking for Clarke. Clarke arrives soon afterward and Finn just stares at her with a crazed look on his face while Octavia sobs over the killed grounders that she personally knew. This scene was jarring to watch because it came across as having Finn be a completely different, savage person. As he was attacking the grounders, I thought "he's going to regret this so much, when he sees Clarke" but then she shows up and he just seems like the people he just murdered never even existed and he just...stares at her. Chilling. Also picked by Ben Norton and Jamie Coudeville
Nirat Anop: Clarke runs to Bellamy and hugs him. In a heartfelt moment coupled with a beautiful underlying score, this made one of my most favorite moments. That hug thought was so genuine, you could feel the emotion hit you right in the heart.
THE FALL, "One Named Peter", November 20, 2014, Actors: Jamie Dornan, Valene Kane
The Scene: Spector drives Rose to the barn
Sandi: Even though he's abducted her from her bed in the middle of the night while her family sleep in the same house, Rose still isn't entirely sure that 'Peter' is the serial killer. It just goes to show how being good looking and charming means you can manipulate a situation more easily, and how people like Ted Bundy managed to get away with his crimes for so long. People just can't believe that a person like that would actually be able to commit such an horrendous crime. It isn't until he explains to her throughout the journey - that the failed 'accident' on her nine years ago is what started this spree off, that she is the only other survivor apart from Annie and that they must be dealt with - that she fully grasps the enormity of the situation. It's only then that she actually tries to escape, but by then she's already at the barn, so it's far too late for that.
THE GOOD WIFE, "Sticky Content", November 16, 2014, Actors: Matt Czuchry, Mike Colter and more, The Scene: Cary shows up at Bishop's home to confront him
Wilson Crawford: Cary, in a bid to assuage Lemond Bishop's worries of Cary outing him to the FBI, shows up at Bishop's home to confront him. Bishop confirms he in fact did threaten to kill Cary on a wiretapped phone, but then stated that he was "blowing off steam." Bishop comes across so menacing in this show, but this episode especially showed what it's like to have such a powerful person possibly working against you. The scene was so stressful to watch because you can see Cary's self-control waning in favor of being terrified, and when Bishop says he didn't mean it, Cary's relief feels a bit premature. Cary doesn't seem to realize that Bishop may or may not just be saving face with him, so as to keep things civil in his household.
THE WALKING DEAD, "Consumed", November 16, 2014, Actors: Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, The Scene: Carol and Daryl encounter the walkers in the sleeping bags
DarkUFO: Gruesome but fairly hilarious.

The Scene: The firehouse goes to Cruz' Zumba class (picked by Ben Norton)

Honorable mentions:
ReplyDeleteSHIELD: The scene where Ward is talking to Whitehall and Skye's biological father. He is so infiltrating Hydra and trying to bring down Whitehall, and I can't wait for his full plan to be revealed (also not entirely convinced his family is actually dead, and I'm not the only one who feels that way).
Scandal - Jake and Olivia dancing
The 100: The reunion scene
Sleepy Hollow - Abbie and Jenny helping their mom move on
H shows xD (Homeland and HTGAWM)
ReplyDeleteNothing from Sons of Anarchy again?! This is the second week in a row I could've voted for 3 different scenes from the episode.
ReplyDeleteSeeing the firehouse at the Zumba class was amazing. Kudos.
ReplyDeleteBellamy and Clarke reunite =^.^=
Also, Alicia of The Good Wife saying: "Stop banging the help"
No Revenge!!! Why!!!
ReplyDeleteMaybe nobody on the team who sends their picks watches the show?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, we always encourage everyone to share some other scenes in the comments as it's impossible to watch and write about everything. What were your favorite scenes on SoA, then?
The Fall, Homeland and The Good Wife.
ReplyDeleteHonorable Mentions: the whole hour from Sons Of Anarchy. From the cold open till Gemma's singing "Blessed Assurance". Devastanting and beautiful. I'd pick up the dialogue between Jax and Juice.
Arrow: it really hurt
ReplyDeleteThe 100: was so awwww
AoS: Doctor and Ward staring at each other - wow epic.
The entire Juice/Jax scene where Juice confirms to Jax who really killed his wife. Jax telling Nero over the phone who did it. You don't hear what Jax is saying but see Nero's reactions in his face. Phenomenal acting by Jimmy Smits. The final scene where Jax breaks down to Nero about everything. Charlie Hunnam gave his career best performance in the episode and everyone is calling for him to finally get a Emmy nomination and tvline.com gave him their Performer of the Week this week.
ReplyDeleteHTGAWM: last scene was sooo creepy and epic
ReplyDeleteScandal: i loooved that dance
Not on here but revenge: emily beat up the guy in the hospital
I don't get it either. That fighting scene was so cool
ReplyDeleteHTGAWM -my jaw is still in the floor days later. That twist was awesome and I didn't see it conning.I'm still going"holy ..." days later.
ReplyDeleteLived that OUAT Elsa/Emma scene , and that Reign Cathetine/Bash scene ,her telling about the twins & how Clause killed them was good
Finn massacring the village and the chilling scene at the end "I found you"
ReplyDeleteThe Flash - Barry running through the school at supersonic speed and punched Tony.
ReplyDeleteThat whole sequence was just so awesome with Barry trying to prove to himself that he's able to do it. This show continues to showcase some of the best special effects I have ever seen on television. Supersonic punch, baby!
Agents of SHIELD - Grant and Christian's confrontation.
My heart was racing when I watched the confrontation because I had no idea what Grant was going to do to his abusive brother after all these years. In the end, I was so happy to see that Grant finally came out on top and finally heard Christian's confession. What a powerful scene!
Arrow - Ray opens up files on his ATOM suit prototype.
I have been waiting for this moment since Ray Palmer came onto the show! I can't wait to see his transformation into the Atom. Should be very exciting! And his suit looks really cool so far.
The 100 - Clarke reunites with Abby/Bellamy/Octavia/Raven and Finn's massacre of the Grounders.
The reunions were just so emotional (especially that Bellarke hug and the Clarke/Abby one) that it made me tear up. They have been separated for far too long and I'm so glad to see they all made it back to one another. And those last few minutes with Finn going ballistic and shooting at every single innocent Grounder was so terrifying that it sent chills down my spine. He has made a complete 180 since the start of the show and he has become so much more engaging. Also, Clarke seeing what he had done was pretty tough to watch.
How to Get Away with Murder - Annalise and Sam's huge fight and the final scene.
Major props to Tom Verica and Viola Davis! That scene with their huge fight was so damn intense that I was on the edge of my seat. I had no idea what was going to come next! And finally, that epic final scene. Annalise being the mastermind on telling Wes how to get away with murder and how to dispose of Sam's body was freaking brilliant. My mouth still drops everytime I see that scene.
Cheers for posting Justyna!
ReplyDeleteHonourable mentions:
The Fall: Gibson and the team realising that Paul Spector was interviewed and they let him get away, Paul interviewing Annie in the hospital, and Paul calling Gibson on Rose's phone, then driving off with Rose in the trunk of her car. I am loving this second season of the show, it's just as intense and creepy, and there hasn't even been another murder yet!
The Flash: Barry's super sonic punch, and face off with the locked up bully. Then the ending when the flashing yellow man warned Joe off the case.
It had to be Kate coming out in that black cowgirl outfit and Rick going crazy.
ReplyDeleteArrow - the hurt look on Olivers face....wish Felicity was the one to pull away from Ray!! She was really into it
ReplyDeleteNo TVD? This was one of the best episodes of the season!!!! :0
ReplyDeleteThe beginning scene with Kai and Jo, the scene where Damon and Alaric tease stefan about caroline as well as the ending scene when Elena asks Damon to help her find Bonnie were all EPIC!
Both The 100 and HTGAWM had shocking endings. Game-changers for both shows.
ReplyDeleteOUaT - Snow Queen finally cast a shattering sight spell or Emma showing to her family, that she is able to control her power by showing them fireworks.
ReplyDeleteBones and HTGAWM
ReplyDeleteDef "other" this week cause Rollins & Amaro's bar scene in this week's SVU "Spousal Privilege" was without a doubt the most cringe-worthy & out of this world awesome scene since "Holden's Manifesto". Kelli & Danny were amazing and I can't wait to see what they're building up for Rollins. "Some of us don't want to be victims" - that was such a telling line. Now bring on Harry Hamlin in the next ep, I can't wait :)
ReplyDeleteOUAT: The scene of Snow Queen and Anna in dungeon, started with SQ's "Surpriiiiiiiiiise!" :) one of my fav scenes and fav lines from that ep XD
ReplyDeleteI agree. Of all the episodes they had this season, this episode of TVD should have definitely made the list for multiple scenes!
ReplyDeleteThe Vampire Diaries: The reunion between Jo and the twins. There were a number of other great scenes in this episode but that one was my favorite.
ReplyDeleteThe Good Wife: Cary confronting Lamonde Bishop. Alicia and Finn have a "moment"
Sleepy Hollow: Abby and Jenny find the mural and then speak to their mother and realize that all this time, she had been protecting them.
Chicago Fire: The whole firehouse shows up for Zumba. That was hilarious. One of their better episodes.
Grimm: Trubel threatens one of the Wesen to protect Nick. I loved that scene.
The last scene in HTGAWM.......and practically every other scene!
Scandal: Jake and Olivia dancing. Other great scenes: Olivia giving Cyrus the Cyrus pep talk.
Revenge: Emily defends her dad in the hospital
Once Upon A Time: Regina and Robin Hood Vault and libary scene
ReplyDeleteBones & HTGAWM but honorable mentions to TVD and SOA esecially to the last one...
ReplyDeleteMost of scenes were awesome, tbh!!
