Ratings Breakdown:
Due to election night updates and coverage on the Big 3 networks in the 10 p.m. hour, all individual series overnight results for this first Tuesday in November are estimated.
In season-premiere news, “MasterChef Junior” on Fox opened its sophomore season with a third-place 3.7/ 6 in the household overnights from 8-9 p.m., which was an increase of a hefty 48 percent, on average, from year-ago comedies “Dads” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (2.5/ 4 each on 11/05/13). And it was 85 percent above the time period premiere for short-lived “Utopia” on Sept. 9 (2.0/ 3). Once again, Gordon Ramsay resonates on Fox.
With stronger lead-in support (and opposite a repeat of “NCIS: New Orleans” on CBS), Fox’s tired “New Girl” perked up a bit with a 2.6/ 5 at 9 p.m. But “The Mindy Project” dipped to a typical 2.0/ 3 (#4) at 9:30 p.m. Both comedies were on par with the year-ago evening.
Airing against an encore of “NCIS,” a clips edition NBC’s “The Voice” (subtitled “The Road to the Live Shows”) opened the evening on a dominant overnight note with a 6.2 rating/9 share in households from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, this is expected to top this atypical evening in adults 18-49 (and the other key young adult demographics). In the rare No. 2 spot was the aforementioned competing repeat of “NCIS” at a 5.9/ 9 (#2).
Next on NBC, episode four of sitcom “Marry Me” slid to a series-low 3.3/ 5 in the 9 p.m. half-hour (#2), which also resulted in the weakest overnight household rating, to-date, for sophomore lead-out “About A Boy” (#2: 2.8/ 4 at 9:30 p.m.). Opposite the pair was a repeat of CBS’ recently introduced “NCIS: Los Angeles” at a dominant 7.3/11, which built from the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in (and parent) “NCIS” (5.8/ 9) by 26 percent. While “NCIS: New Orleans” will never get the due credit it deserves, consider this a bona fide new hit.
ABC populated the 8 p.m. hour with two episodes of struggling comedy “Selfie,” which finished fourth in both half-hours with a 3.0/ 5 at 8 p.m. and a 2.5/ 4 at 8:30 p.m. And that 2.5/ 4 was a series low. Next on the alphabet net was 9 p.m. special “Marvel: 75 Years From Pulp to Pop!” at a not-so-special 2.5/ 4 (#3) from 9-10 p.m.
Election coverage on the Big 3 networks in the 10 p.m. hour – all approximate – fared as follows:
CBS: 3.4/ 6, ABC: 3.0/ 5, NBC: 2.6/ 4
The CW capped off this unusual evening with encore telecasts of “The Flash” (#5: 1.4/ 2) and veteran “Supernatural” (#5: 0.8/ 1).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.
If you’re interested in Ratings/Renewals/Cancellations then we have a number of resources here at SpoilerTV that we recommend you check out.
Surprisingly good for Masterchef Jr, though the competition was weak last night. I won't be shocked if New Girl beats Marry Me in the demo. How embarrassing that would be.
ReplyDeleteMarc really needs to check his facts. NCIS: NO aired at 8 while NCIS aired at 9. Why would the spinoff build that much from its lead-in? It wouldnt even make sense.
Boring night, ratings wise.
ReplyDeleteNot so good for The Flash i guess.
ReplyDeleteOk, it's safe but i want more:)
Marc keeps confusing NICS LA with NCIS NO.
ReplyDeleteMarry Me numbers are soul crushing. I just hope it airs all 13 at this point :(
ReplyDeleteThe flash was just a repeat not a new episode
ReplyDeleteI will be so sad if About a Boy is cancelled this year :/
ReplyDeletePlus, The Flash had a number similar to that in repeats on October 15 but it was following a new episode of Arrow. I'm sure The Flash will be at least steady next week especially with the positive feedback of the most recent episode.
ReplyDeletewhat are the chances of Mindy making it to season 4?
ReplyDeleteThe last episode of the Flash was a rerun.
ReplyDeleteGreat then, because i really didn't had the time to watch it live.
ReplyDeleteI'd say it is 50-50 at the moment, it depends on how it keeps faring. Should it be able to rise a couple of tenths in the demo maybe it can squeeze through a season 4
ReplyDeleteI mean seriously, it's not that difficult. LA airs on Monday and NOLA on Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the numbers for it matter at this point, since it is unlikely it would really change its relative ratings significantly. It depends on how much production company is willing to lower the licensee fee to get it to syndication.
ReplyDeleteToo bad Marc didn't realize that NO & NCIS flipped time slots because of election coverage.
ReplyDeleteI think New Girl is going to beat Marry Me in the demo.
ReplyDeleteNot even About A Boy or Go On were beat by New Girl when they had the Voice boost. It'd be sad if Marry Me is already lower than New Girl in its 4th week.
ReplyDeleteI hope it gets pulled
ReplyDeleteRude
ReplyDeleteI think numbers can help improve its chances, especially considering it hasn't been doing bad on 18-34, so if it could uptick on those demos I can see FOX sticking with Mindy for a little while. If the production company lowers the licensees fees then I'd call it a sure thing.
ReplyDeleteBut for now it is a toss up and could end up just like Happy Endings and Suborgatory
If New Girl beats Marry Me that would definitely be something. Other than the comedy showdown I agree there's not much else going on.
ReplyDeleteNote: NBC/Uni slashed Mindy's license fee last year, to get the 15-episode third season. To get to season four, they'd have to do another slash, to get another 15, which still wouldn't get them to syndication.
ReplyDeletereally no point in pulling it now, may as well burn off all episodes and start fresh mid season. Then again maybe they should pull it and burn off episodes of AAB instead.
ReplyDeleteYes, numbers of course can help but my point was that the likelihood of the change in numbers being significant enough to make a difference is very small in my opinion. So it will come down to the licensee fee. I am still not sure if HE/Suburgatory is the best comparison since Mindy could have 86 episodes next year which is effective syndication, while HE and Suburgatory would both need at least two more seasons to get there, so I think Mindy is better positioned.
ReplyDeletePull Marry Me and double pump About A Boy at 8pm, shift the Voice to 9pm to boost Chicago Fire as much as possible.
ReplyDeleteI don't find it that shocking that New Girl beats Marry Me. Marry Me has been performing quite poorly and the voice was a recap last night while on the other hand New Girl probably had its best lead-in in a year (or maybe even more) so I think it could be expected that they pulled similar numbers or that new girl would beat it.
ReplyDeleteIf they were to do a 22-24 season next year they would finish with ~85 episodes which would be enough for syndication.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about that licensee fee cut this year. Has that been confirmed anywhere? Seems pretty strange to me considering it was such an early renewal and those type of complicated negotiations with bubble shows usually take place in the 11th hour in May.
I let it go the first couple of times but its starting to get annoying. Doesn't he proof read before posting?
ReplyDeleteNothing suggests Dana Walden and Gary Newman are going to agree to a 22-24 Season Four for "The Mindy Project," a show Fox barely promotes anymore. Especially since Peter Rice -- who ranks above them at Fox -- made it clear at the TCAs that Mindy needed to get her audience numbers up if she wanted to stick around. Since then, her numbers have fallen.
ReplyDeleteB&C (Broadcasting and Cable) mentioned the licensing fee reduction last spring. Apparently, it wasn't that complicated a negotiation. NBC/Uni made the offer after Mindy came back from hiatus to a series-low 1.0 rating. At that point, NBC/Uni could see the writing on the wall.
True, possibly the best comparison is with Last Man Standing, which had 64 episodes by the end of season 3. Mindy will have 61 episodes by the end of the season, so if they go for the full season renewal (22-25 episodes) syndication is at hand with 83-86 episodes, not far off the usually 88 required
ReplyDeleteCF doesn't really need a Voice boost, it does pretty much the same with or without it.
ReplyDeleteIf Marry Me has to get out of its Voice lead, I rather it switch timeslots with About a Boy rather than just yanking it off schedule
Maybe that's a good comparison, yes. It only bugs me a bit why so many people consider Nashville for instance a "lock" and Mindy "a very unlikely renewal" or even "a low end tossup" when the effective difference between the number of episodes of both of them will be 4 at the end of the season. 4. That's it. Is that really enough to warrant such a distinction in predictions?
ReplyDeleteIf they lower the licensee fee again then (which they probably have more incentive to do now than last year especially since they would achieve syndication and effectively recover their losses), I am not sure why FOX wouldn't put up with it. Sure they may not put up with it on Tuesday but FOX has a history of renewing comedies and burning them off in death slots (Sundays at 7pm, Fridays at 9pm) just to get them to syndication. It wouldn't do harm there and if it was for close to free, why not? I am not saying it will be renewed (FOX is very hard to figure out for me right now), I am just saying that I don't think it's an obvious cancellation either.
ReplyDeleteAbout A Boy won't do any better swapping time slots with Marry Me. Both comedies should be burned off or pulled.
ReplyDeleteI dont really think moving The Voice to 9pm is needed. CF does fine and doesnt need the extra help and the 8pm hour would then become the problem hour. They should just aim to burn off the currect comedies till January and replace with either 2 new comedies or IMO a new drama.
ReplyDeleteThe Voice does better at 9pm and Chicago Fire will probably go up half a rating point. Overall that will help the nightly average and not waste the lead in on Dead Comedies Walking.
ReplyDeleteAs far as mid-season none of NBC's slate of comedies are compelling enough to do well behind the Voice IMO. They also don't have any spare dramas on the bench for the slot either, so who knows what happens.
New Girl beating a brand-new highly-promoted comedy that had twice the lead-in support is pretty impressive of you ask me.
ReplyDeleteBut it's dumb to use one of your biggest lead-ins on a show that doesn't need it. The point of having big shows is to use them to grow your schedule and jump start as many shows as you can. Using The Voice on something that's already a pretty strong drama while NBC literally doesn't have any strong comedies is so backwards, IMO. NBC needs comedies on their schedule and there's no other place to put them besides Tuesdays behind The Voice. And there's no way any comedies on their midseason schedule are going to self-start, so they need The Voice.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it possible that NBC/Uni could just air Mindy on NBC - aka like CBS did with Medium S6 when NBC wouldn't agree to a full season? Good grief, considering all the other low-rated comedies NBC has aired during the past few season, they could take Mindy and then profit off of it on back end.
ReplyDeleteI am not saying it isn't impressive, but more not surprising. And I doubt The Voice clip show will double the premiere of Masterchef Jr. by the way, though I could be wrong.
ReplyDeleteBye bye Marry Me and About A Boy !
ReplyDeleteI agree for mid-season NBC can try new comedies there (Mr Robinson and Kimmel Schmidt), but in the present why waste the lead in on 2 shows that are going nowhere but down?
ReplyDeleteWhoa even the election coverage did horrible in the ratings
ReplyDeleteYeah Masterchef did a 1.8 and the voice 2.3. While still a respectable difference, hardly the double. But your point still stands and New Girl did win the comedy battle comfortably indeed (and still pending adjustments which tend to favor NG and hurt MM)
ReplyDeletegood job on
ReplyDeleteThe mindy Project 1.3
New Girl 1.6
ughhh marry me stop falling :(
ReplyDeleteAnd you were right.
ReplyDeleteWOW, New Girl AND Mundy beat Marry Me and About A Boy! Great job Fox!
ReplyDeleteNBC needs to pull both comedies ASAP.

wow 0.6 The flash beating To & JTV
ReplyDeleteand that was a repeat episode of The Flash as well
ReplyDeletei know right
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised Mindy almost beat Marry Me too (Marry Me actually might adjust down though).
ReplyDeleteGreat news for Mindy fans.
The Supernatural repeat did really good as well.
ReplyDeleteIf Marry Me adjust down which is highly likely then BOTH New Girl AND Mindy beat NBC'S brand new comedy.
ReplyDeleteWow look at new girl jump nice!!
ReplyDeleteWhat episode did they repeat of Supernatural last night ?
ReplyDeleteI'm happy for New Girl but heartbroken for Marry Me and About A Boy. All great episodes last night.
ReplyDeleteNew Girl is also only a tenth from Brooklyn 9-9. Not bad for a show people were writing off a few weeks ago. It's all about the lead-in.
ReplyDeleteClip show I think
ReplyDeleteSame here; New Girl deserves to bounce back since this season has been much better than the previous one.
ReplyDeleteBut the Marry Me numbers are really soulcrushing. I'm really sad about it because it has been so good this season :(
Well Mindy has done mostly 1.0s and Nashville 1.5-1.4s, its half a rating point of difference
ReplyDeleteNew Girl is safe for a couple more seasons, me thinks. Hopefully it picks up new viewers.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it will adjust down, The Voice wasn't that high last night.
ReplyDeleteWell but Mindy is performing at ~58% of FOX's scripted average and Nashville at ~68% of ABC's scripted average. That's a 10% difference yes, but it's hardly very significant. And I haven't heard anyone who claims that Nashville is safe because of that. Everyone says that Nashville is safe in spite of that.
ReplyDelete18-34 ratings per showbuzzdaily (repeats and election coverage excluded):
ReplyDeleteFOX:
Masterchef Jr: 1.4
New Girl: 1.6
The Mindy Project: 1.2
NBC:
Voice Clip show: 1.4
Marry Me: 0.9
About a Boy: 0.9
ABC:
Selfie: 0.7
Marvel: 0.7
Standing ovation for New Girl.
ReplyDeleteI know there is lack of actual competition from ABC, CBS and even FOX, but those numbers are about as good as FOX can expect from New Girl and The Mindy Project (particularly beating the NBC comedies with a huge The Voice lead-in). It is at least encouraging to FOX that there is still some potential viewers for New Girl and The Mindy Project with less competition and a better lead-in.
ReplyDeleteFox dominated the 18-49 demo last night
ReplyDeleteNot understanding how a 3.3/5 for Marry me translates to a 1.3 but a 2.6/5 for New Girl translates to a 1.6 can someone please explain?
ReplyDeleteMarry Me gets more total viewers while New Girl gets less, but the majority of those are in the demo.
ReplyDeleteYet you felt the need to post about it.
ReplyDeletePhew glad The Voice was a clip show for NBC's sake.
ReplyDeleteNext week there will be five hours.
ReplyDeleteNew Girl matched Brooklyn 9-9s preliminary rating with a smaller lead in. That's really good news for Fox
ReplyDeleteNew Girl growing out of Masterchef in 18-34 is great for it.
ReplyDeleteA 3rd season show being almost at 70% of the network avarage is pretty much a sure thing; it ratings are not amazing, but they are not completely terrible either. A show with 60% is not that as good.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing against Nashville is how much it drops from Black-ish, but at this point it doesn't matter much as long as it keeps perfomring OK-ish.
Also a key factor is that Nashville is an in-house production; ABC owns it, so they are the ones who will profit from its syndication, whearead FOX doesn't own The Mindy Project and so they won't see as much gain as ABC will do with Nashville, at best they get a cheap show because of lower licensee fees, but they won't make money out of it when it goes to syndication.
The Mindy Project has fair chances of a renewal if FOX is willing to give it 22-25 episodes for next season and the licensees fees are reduced, but comparing it with Nashville is apples and oranges; the fact that Nashville is owned by ABC marks a huge difference between these two shows
You can thank November sweeps for that.
ReplyDeleteThat's still not right. NO aired at 8 and NCIS aired at 9.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you want these pulled? Can't you just let them air so those who enjoy both show can enjoy it for as long as possible? It's not like NBC is forcing you to watch them
ReplyDeleteIt might be too soon to say but if Mindy can maintain these numbers it might be safe for a renewal too...
ReplyDeleteThe show will live to a 5th season thanks to its amazing 18-34 numbers. It's really outstanding how much lead in changes things; New Girl took Masterchef's audience and built on it.
ReplyDelete18-34 actually
ReplyDeleteAccording to this site, Fox is the only network not affected by election coverage. Across the board every other network had interrupted shows. Celebration for any show at this point might be a bit premature.
ReplyDeleteTypo
ReplyDeleteThe 18-49 demo? Okay. I got it. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteNBC also has Ellen Degeneres' comedy, One Big Happy for mid-season.
ReplyDeleteDoes it mean that NCOs no and AOS directly affect new girl and Mindy because then I can understand the ratings slip .
ReplyDeleteNew Girl was always a very interesting case study for me. Even back in season 1 when it was a huge hit it would do a phenomenal job retaining Glee's audience and then building on it significantly. Even though Glee was lower rated, it clearly made a difference for the show which lost steam when Glee was preempted and got it back when it was in originals. To me, that's one of the best examples of how wrongfully most people use the term "lead-in" dependent or something like that. It is not the fact that a show is lower rated or higher rated than the other that says that, it is what they do with the audience of the lead-in, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteBut I agree that New Girl will have a 5th season. Syndication also helps and FOX's death slate as well.
I know your suggesting double pumping to burn off AAB but I actually think it would do better in the earlier hour because it is more of a family show, parents watch it with their kids. So I think this is a great idea for that reason and I'd love to see what CF could do with a Voice boost, plus I just think reality shows can work later in the night where comedy seems to flounder.
ReplyDeleteThe only network that has any result worth celebrating is FOX imo. Selfie, About a Boy and Marry Me did terribly, no reason to celebrate them. I suppose the NCIS repeats were pretty good for repeats but that's about it.
ReplyDeleteIt did do better last year. It was spectacular numbers but it retained a lot more than Marry Me does.
ReplyDeleteThat was suppose to say *wasn't.
ReplyDeleteYep, 95 episodes so at the end of season, they are so short on making to 100 and that will defenitely improve their sells pitch; besides even though not outstanding on 18-49 New Girl still does decent business and gets good ad rates out of it 18-34 audience
ReplyDeleteNew Girl skews much younger than Marry Me.
ReplyDeleteI think Marry Me is an OK show and I still watch it, but it's not good for the network for Marry Me to occupy such a prime spot in the schedule. It's bringing the whole night down with its bad ratings.
ReplyDeleteWhich looks DOA to me.
ReplyDeleteNew Girl is more than likely inflated due to election coverage. Don't be surprised if it goes down.
ReplyDeleteTVBTN are saying take these preliminaries with a grain of salt/
Sad about Marry Me. Love this Happy Ending-ish show !
ReplyDeleteYes, I did. What's your point?
ReplyDeleteHH has nothing to do with the demo, really.
ReplyDeleteCW reruns did better than their Original Monday line up!
ReplyDeleteFlash is still going really strong! Loving it can't wait for the rest of the season.
Nashville will have three full seasons while Mibdys season thre is 15 episodes, putting it much farther way from syndication..Nashville also music/concets sakes to help,Mndy dosent,
ReplyDeleteMust not be all the boring for you to take the time to comment about it.
ReplyDeleteRetrospective
ReplyDeleteI am a staff member here, so I am on the site more often than not. And yeah, I comment on stuff.
ReplyDeleteBased on FOX's situation, I'd say that it has a pretty good short so long that it steadies around here
ReplyDeleteMost of your points are correct but the first one (and the one I believe you appared to make the bigger one) isn't, since by the end of season, the difference in number of episodes between Nashville and The Mindy Project will be 4 episodes, so you cannot say that mindy will be much further from syndication IMO, 4 episodes are not material.
