ABC inched past NBC for overnight dominance, with a 0.1 household rating point advantage. But the home of “The Voice” and “The Blacklist” remains the network to beat in adults 18-49 (and all the key young adult demos). And CBS and The CW are the most improved (despite only a 1.0 rating/1 share in the household overnights, on average, for The CW).
ABC’s veteran “Dancing with the Stars” led the 8-10 p.m. bock, with a 9.0 rating/13 share in households (and erosion of just seven percent from the 9.7/15 on the year-ago evening). And it led into 10 p.m. special, “Countdown to the CMA Awards: 15 Songs That Changed Country Music With Robin Roberts” at a third-place 4.8/ 8 at 10 p.m., which was 19 percent below the 5.9/10 for regularly scheduled “Castle” one week earlier. Compared to last fall, however, that 4.8 in the overnights was a hefty 92 percent above the 2.5/ 4 for “In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts: Countdown to the CMA Awards” on Tuesday 11/05/13 (at 10 p.m. ET).
On NBC, two-hours of demo-dominant “The Voice” scored a healthy 8.1/12 from 8-10 p.m. (#2), which was seven percent above the 7.6/11 on the year-ago evening. And it led into “The Blacklist” at a 6.3/11 at 10 p.m., which will win the hour in the key demos but trailed competing “NCIS: Los Angeles” on CBS (#1: 6.4/11) by one-tenth of a rating point. Worth positively noting for “NCIS: Los Angeles” was overnight growth of 94 percent from failed year-ago time period occupant “Hostages” (3.3/ 6 on 11/04/13).
Earlier in the evening on CBS were sitcoms “2 Broke Girls” (#3: 5.2/ 8 at 8 p.m.) and relocated “The Millers” (#3: 4.4/ 6 at 9:30 p.m.), which declined from year-ago time period occupants “How I Met Your Mother” (5.6/ 8 on 11/04/13) and “2 Broke Girls” (5.4/ 8) by 7 percent and 19 percent, respectively. While 85 percent overnight retention for “The Millers” out of “2 Broke Girls” was better than the 79 percent last week, the question on everyone’s minds has to be why Sean Hayes is suddenly on this sitcom.
Also on CBS: Episode seven of full season-renewed drama “Scorpion” did drop to a series-low 6.7/10 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m. But that 6.7 was still 52 percent above lead-in “The Millers” and 22 percent above year-ago time period occupants “Mike & Molly” (6.1/ 9 on 11/04/13 – season premiere) and “Mom” (5.0/ 8). CBS took a gamble by breaking up the perennial two-hour Monday sitcom block and it has paid off.
Elsewhere, Fox increased by eight percent from one week earlier with its demo friendly combination of dramas “Gotham” (#4: 4.8/ 7), which also earned its full season-renewal stripes, and “Sleepy Hollow” (#4: 3.1/ 5). And The CW was flat from one week earlier (but up 25 percent form the year-ago evening) with its pairing of sophomore “The Originals” (#5: 1.0/ 2) and creative hit “Jane the Virgin” (#5: 0.9/ 1), which has also received a full season pick-up. While a 0.9 in the overnights last week only translated into a 0.4/ 1 among adults 18-49 for “Jane the Virgin” out of a 0.6/ 2 in the demo for “The Originals,” it was still 29 percent above year-ago occupant “Beauty and the Beast” in the overnights (0.7/ 1 on 11/04/13). Note to the Emmy voters: don’t forget to include Gina Rodriguez on the ballot.

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

You can't be too sure. If it tanks on Thursdays (very unlikey), then it could get cancelled.
ReplyDeleteConsidering it's unlikely for it to tank to the point where it would drop below NBC's scripted average, I think The Blacklist is safe for a renewal.

We have three similar themed shows (Scandal, SOA, & MS) - while content of latter two is closer - that's a lot of politically driven programs.

Also, Scorpion/LA are significantly higher than what was previously there, so while CBS has taken losses with several moves (Stalker/CSI, TAR/UB, MS/TAR,), this is one where they are better off - that qualifies as a 'winner.'

ReplyDeleteboth shows were preempted in New York. They will air on Saturday in that market. The HH ratings equaled last week. But that doesnt say much when it is the CW. Arrow once got a 0.8 with a 1.9 HH , and another time a 1.0 with the same HH rating.

ReplyDeleteAh, didn't read that. TBH though I think CBS could air a special video edition of the SpoilerTV Podcast and it would get better ratings than Hostages did.

ReplyDeleteWith Gotham it seems word is spreading that the show is starting to get really good as its found its footing. Now if only every episode could be like last night's rather than the usual freak of the week stuff.

ReplyDeleteLast season We Are Men was pulled at 1.8. The Millers deserves the same fate. An both shows are equally awful.

ReplyDeleteLast nights was the best episode to date for the show. I think some "freaks" have been better than others, wasn't a huge fan of the spirit of the goat. It does get really good DVR numbers as well.

ReplyDeleteAnd a pick up by CBS if NBC decides to cancel. LOL. This is the most "CBS-like" show, but on NBC. TBL will run for several more years. I'm still holding out hope that NBC will change its mind about Thursday move. I know they are hoping for GA's like SB boost followed by Thursday launch, but it's very different. Darker shows (see CBS huge misfire with CM after SB) do not do well. Plus, unlike GA, which was considered a timeslot hit after DH, TBL started with a huge ratings bang and now is sliding a bit.
ReplyDeleteLots of people over 50 watch it; in fact, there is more people over 50 watching TV than people on the demo; the only thing that truly skews young anf catched a lot of eyeball below 50 is The Walking Dead. And GoT to an extent, but it's not as massive as TWD in terms of viewership

ReplyDeleteAired out of TBBT for its season premiere and lost more than half of TBBT's demo (4.6 to a 2.1).

ReplyDeleteI think it is unavoidable. It is still pretty much the same show, good production values, great acting by James Spader. Nothing has really made it much better or much worse. Personally, I gave it up, not because I hate it, it's just that I get bored easily. I am okay with sticking with shows like The Blacklist or Sleepy Hollow for one season, but I normally don't stick with shows past their first season, because I'm just not the type of person to watch a second season of "just about the same". I suspect that is what happens to most shows, which is why most shows decline season to season. It's hard to stick with a show for more than a year, when new shows keep popping out left and right.
