Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. -Winners:
“NCIS” (CBS), “The Voice” (NBC), “The Flash” (CW), “NCIS: New Orleans” (CBS), “Chicago Fire” (NBC)
-Continued Erosion:
“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (ABC)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Selfie” (ABC), “New Girl” (Fox), “The Mindy Project” (Fox), “Forever” (ABC)

Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led this second Tuesday in the household overnights, besting No. 2 NBC by 23 percent. But “Person of Interest” slipped to second in the 10 p.m. hour behind “Chicago Fire,” and NBC is a lock for victory in adults 18-49 (and all the key young adult demos).
Ignited by the crossover with “Law & Order: SVU” and “Chicago PD” (which concludes tonight), “Chicago Fire” rose to a season-high 5.9 rating/10 share in households at 10 p.m. Comparably, “Chicago Fire” beat the competition — aforementioned “Person of Interest” (#2: 5.7/10) and “Forever” on ABC (#3: 3.1/ 5) — by 4 and 90 percent, respectively. It tied its series high (5.9/10 on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013). And “Chicago Fire” increased from its year-ago overnight performance (5.1/ 9 on 11/12/13) by 16 percent.
Earlier in the evening on NBC was a two-hour edition of “The Voice” (pre-empting sitcoms “Marry Me” and “About A Boy” in the 9 p.m. hour) at a healthy 7.4/11 from 8-10 p.m., which will top the night in the key demos.
CBS’ pairing of “NCIS” (10.7/16 at 8 p.m. – #1 for the night) and spin-off “NCIS: Los Angeles” (9.0/14) won the 8-10 p.m. block in the overnights, as usual.
On ABC, sitcom “Selfie” earned its cancellation with a series-low 2.6/ 4 (#4t) in the 8 p.m. half-hour, and it led into a 2.3/ 4 (#5) for a repeat of “Modern Family” at 8:30 p.m. Next was diluted “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” at a third-place 2.9/ 4 from 9-10 p.m., which was 31 percent below the 4.2/ 7 on the year-ago evening at 8 p.m. And the 3.1/ 5 for full season-renewed “Forever” at 10 p.m. was a series low.
Over at Fox, “MasterChef Junior” remains a notable improvement from recent time period occupant “Utopia” and year-ago sitcoms “Dads” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” But a third-place 3.2/ 5 from 8-9 p.m. was 14 percent below the season-premiere one week earlier (3.7/ 6 on Nov. 4), which translated into 5.09 million viewers and a 1.8 rating/6 share among adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data). Next on Fox were low-rated comedies “New Girl” (#4: 2.2/ 3) and “The Mindy Project” (#4: 1.9/ 3) from 9-10 p.m., which declined from their year-ago overnight performances by 19 percent and 10 percent, respectively.
The CW, meanwhile, continues to enjoy success with freshman entry “The Flash” (#4: 2.6/ 4), which built by 53 percent from the 1.7/ 3 for year-ago occupant “The Originals.” And “The Flash” led into a typical 1.5/ 2 (#5) for the 200th episode of lead-out “Supernatural,” which slid by an extensive 42 percent.

Oh boy
ReplyDeleteHow good is coming here and read:
ReplyDelete"Metered Market Tuesday RatingsNBC’s “Chicago Fire” Ties Series High"??? <333333333
Damn it shield!!why the episode was insanely good and the MF repeat was no help at all.
ReplyDelete"Ignited by the crossover with “Law & Order: SVU” and “Chicago PD”".
ReplyDeleteIt's very likely that The Voice also had a hand in helping Chicago Fire to a season/series high.
"spin-off “NCIS: Los Angeles”"
Marc, please get your facts right. This is getting so irritating right now and very unprofessional.
The Flash is steady in HH ratings from two weeks ago.
It's the crossover, I wonder how much it'll affect the other shows tonight.
ReplyDeleteYep, I know the reason. And the 2hour of The Voice also helps a lot! :)
ReplyDeletenoo forever
ReplyDeleteMarc confusing NCIS NO with NCIS LA is getting beyond annoying.
ReplyDeleteThe Flash steady! Hopefully it will keep this level for most of the season or even increase!
Yikes, and right after the full season order no less.
ReplyDeleteThe cross-overs have produced spikes for the CF/SVU/PD, but let's face it, it's TV lead-in v. some placehold comedy.
ReplyDeleteMarc has always been unprofessional.
ReplyDeleteI like to think that is intentional, like, he's arguing that all NCIS shows are equals haha
ReplyDeleteHope that means Flash stabilized, the inching down every week is really bugging me.
ReplyDeleteBTW am I the only one thinks the CW'S promo title cards are WAY better than the actual show title cards? Flash uses the whole insignia, Originals has rusted words over a spooky gate and Arrow has a bow through the word with a flaming city in the background.
Lol I watch way too much TV if I'm noticing things like this!
without the adam char this show is not watchable for me . they should bring him back
ReplyDeleteI'm not too worried about S.H.I.E.L.D.'s ratings. They improve a lot when you factor in the DVR stats.
ReplyDeleteI was going to say the exact same thing about CF.
ReplyDeleteIt's very creative.
ReplyDeleteWhich don't really matter for renewal purposes.
ReplyDeleteSPN pretty much always has a 1.5HH rating and that could be an A18-49 rating of anywhere from a 0.8 to a 1.3?
ReplyDeleteThey need to focus more on that, otherwise it'll feel like just another procedural.
ReplyDeletePretty much, either way, it's still doing well enough.
ReplyDeleteGreat for Chicago Fire. Sad for Person Of Interest. But, I love both, so....
ReplyDeleteWhich they're not.
ReplyDeleteUgh Person of Interest...
ReplyDeleteChicago Fire had the Voice earlier this season and hasn't hit this HH ratings high since the season 2 premier
ReplyDeleteI think the crossover is why the ratings spiked so much.
Berman puts way too much stock into HH and year-to-year.
ReplyDeleteAlso he wrote this verbatim two weeks ago
"Next was relocated “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” at a diluted 2.9/ 4 (#4) from 9-10 p.m., which was a series low for an original episode"
So he lists AoS under continued erosion. Yet it didn't drop from the previous episode in HH and the week prior it was 3.0 in HH. Also last week's "eroded" HH 18-49 wise was tied for 2nd highest rated episode of the season for AoS.
Chicago Fire may have hit a series high last night. Crossover week on NBC looks likes success so far.
ReplyDeleteLet's so bot factors contributed for the ratings spike.
ReplyDeleteLast night was SPN's 200th episode. From what I understand about syndication 88-100 eps gets a show sold to networks/countries to live forever in reruns. Does this mean SPN gets some kind of bonus, or do they just continue to sell it season by season?
ReplyDeleteI'll watch Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. and Law & Order tonight, so as The Flash and Supernatural!!!
ReplyDeleteNoo AOS Wednesday give me so much grief!
ReplyDeleteNo, it's not like that. Shows get a syndication deal where another networks agrees to pay per episode.
ReplyDeleteOk thanks.
ReplyDeleteLooks like I spoke too soon anyway because the top 25 number for CF looks more typical
ReplyDeleteGood for chicago fire!
ReplyDeleteSeems SPN has the same top 25 markets ratings as for 3x04.
ReplyDeleteThen he is doing a terrible job at it, if so he should be doing something like this:
ReplyDelete"At 9PM, a second episode of NCIS only mustered a 9.0; note to CBS, run this show only at 8PM, that's where your fanbase is"
It tends to hover around 1.0 for the Top 25. For 10x04 that turned into a 0.8, but for 10x02 it stayed at 1.0. So who knows.
ReplyDeleteyeah i was expecting a bit of a boost for the 200th episode.
ReplyDelete3x04?
ReplyDeletealready edited. xD
ReplyDeleteMe too. If it can pull a 1.0, that would be a decent jump from 10x04. Crossing fingers.
ReplyDeleteWho knows when the other markets are factored in it could be higher than 1.0.
ReplyDeleteThat looks very low for SHIELD.
ReplyDeleteI dont think i ever saw the CW rise when all markets are factored in. Mostly seems to be a CBS thing.
ReplyDeleteWaiting for these ratings is more suspenseful than the plots of some of these shows.
ReplyDeleteOh god,AoS 1.5!!Another series low!!
ReplyDeleteUgh, SHIELD is down two tenths from it's previous episode. Stop falling, show! :(
ReplyDeleteAOS is just embarrassing as the entire ABC line up is just bad
ReplyDeleteHopefully Shield adjusts up as usual.
ReplyDeleteNoo modern family was useless worse that selfie damn Tuesdays is a train wreck!
ReplyDeleteMasterchef? 2.2?
ReplyDeleteIt's sad when masterchef is beating ABC
ReplyDeleteHa ROFL :)
ReplyDeleteNo, 1.8
ReplyDeleteI'm happy for The Flash's numbers, but it's frustrating to see POI slip and SPN get much lower numbers, especially considering how truly amazing that 200th episode was. But, maybe it's one of those things where I should stop hoping for more people to see SPN. It's in its tenth season and however amount of people watch the series, I don't think a whole lot more will jump into that ship to watch.
ReplyDeleteI see. The table that I currently seeing is projecting 2.2 for JMF
ReplyDeleteMasterchef Jr is a good show
ReplyDeleteStrange. Try doing a ctrl-F5. Looks like something is screwy lol
ReplyDeleteRevenges 1.3 doesn't look bad looking at ABC Tuesday
ReplyDeleteIt's okay now! Thanks! Just excited to see the ratings. Keep refreshing. :)
ReplyDeleteThe first rule of AOS is don't panic until the finals come in.,
ReplyDeleteSPN went up in ratings from season 7 to 8 and then again from 8 to 9 so it does attract new viewers. Personally I think the lower ratings (increasingly so) this season are because the storylines/writing just arent that good.
ReplyDeleteHa lol. Full Table should be there now.
ReplyDeleteYikes POI. Those ratings look cancellation worthy for CBS.
ReplyDeleteOuch for AoS. Hopefully it will adjust up.
That's true.
ReplyDeleteEverything down except Masterchef Jr and Chicago Fire?
ReplyDeleteThe Voice hits New Girl and TMP. Hopefully, next week they will rebound!
ReplyDeleteNice hold JM!
even after the adjustment,it would get 1.6.Nothing to celebrate.
ReplyDeleteSHIELD had an ugly half hour drop. 1.6/1.4.
ReplyDeleteS10 has been phenomenal, so I don't get why you're saying that about this season. Already I'm enjoying this season more than S9(but then again, I'd like anything right now that has less focus on angels).
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm referring to The Flash numbers for SPN. Maybe I shouldn't be expecting to see those numbers for SPN when I really want to.
It did better than the last episode of MLS.
ReplyDeleteOh of course I still wouldn't be celebrating if it get adjusted up a tenth but I would rather see it tie its series low again then see it getting a new one.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural is up.
ReplyDeleteeach to their own I guess I think this season has been crap. I was referring to ratings for SPN being down on a weekly basis this season and from this time last fall.
ReplyDeleteAttilan reveal wasn't able to help maintain ratings then I don't know what will :(
ReplyDeleteA 1.5 is pretty bad
ReplyDeleteAnd Selfie
ReplyDeleteUgh, spoilers.
ReplyDeletewell given that it was alandmark episode it should have been up or it could have been embarrassing

AoS is at the point where I expect it to always adjust up. Which of it does it put it back up to it's season average of between 1.6-1.7
ReplyDeleteYikes POI. Not TOO worried though. CF/CPD/LaO crossover has gotten a lot of promotion I think. Next week's ones will will hopefully go up.
ReplyDeleteSo far it's hovering above 0.9 for this season, which is decent. Last year's average was around 1.0, so that's not a huge drop (yet).
ReplyDeleteAnd I think AOS may be hurting it a little this year, as opposed to last fall when AOS was at 8. The shows do share viewers, so there may be some decline from viewers choosing AOS this season. Just speculation.
The big winners last night in my opinion were Masterchef Jr which was rock solid against the return of the voice and ncis and The Flash which continues to hold on superbly. Supernatural and Fire also did well. Hopefully Shield adjusts up.

Yay for The Flash. Ouch POI. AoS might adjust up as usual. Forever is a gone case.
ReplyDeleteBeat you to it.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed SPN had been pretty even with viewers vs last season but the demo has been down. It's skewing differently?
ReplyDeleteOuch forever, AOS and POI. Good for CF
ReplyDeleteI actually arrived home just in time to watch the second half but I'm not a Nelson household members so I don't matter. However, I watched the whole thing online this morning and ABC does count that, separately of course.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why POI's ratings keep falling; people keep whining about Carter? Wasn't that like a million years ago? Seriously, the show has a solid lead in and as far as I've seen, it's getting good reviews and reception overall, so why would people just tune out?
ReplyDeleteIKR it makes me really happy actually and revenge will rise next week for sure!
ReplyDeleteYes. In fact, in two weeks today it will be exactly one year since her death episode.
ReplyDeletePOI definitely moved up a few notches on cancellation line - CBS will automatically choose one of its own series over this. The retention out of NO has been weak all season (and ABC isn't a threat) and CF has been average since the comedy lead-ins. Forever, just appaling that this got a full season order and is staying in the slot
ReplyDeleteLast week was great,i have to admit.I enjoyed revenge after a very long time TBH!
ReplyDeleteI expected this for AOS because there is a lot a fan overlap with Supernatural and I've seen online that a lot of fans have been having to choose between the two shows all season. I assume that some people who have been DVRing Supernatural decided to watch it live this week because it was the 200th episode and DVR AOS instead. Which is fine as long as they watch the commercials. For those of us who are not Nelson members watch online, ABC tracks that separately.
ReplyDeleteBut like you I hope there is an adjustment.
Thqt is great to hear since you were not so excited before sunday's episode. However, that episode probably blew many people away and i think many people will Catch up just to see that episode. Next week should be extremly interesting. Emily has the right to confront david. Here we go
ReplyDeleteThis episode of POI was dead regardless of the quality, 3 way crossover for Chicago Fire, it was destined to win.
ReplyDeleteAs for other episodes, POI is doing 1.5 to 1.7 which is better than most CBS shows at 10 PM. NCIS: LA is doing 1.5, Elementary 1.2 other shows are also in similar range. Nothing to worry. CBS will wait for Netflix and WGN to bring in more viewers before cancelling the show. Judging by Nolan is already developing 2 more TV shows I think POI is set for 5-6 seasons which is just about right IMO. SO nothing to worry here.
Person of Interest was a mostly procedural show for its first two and a half seasons (I would say roughly until Carter's death). Sure, it had plenty of ongoing storylines mixed with the standalone elements, but you could still watch most episodes without tuning in to the previous one or having to know who is who, etc. The second half of season 3 practically dropped the standalone element and the show turned into a full serialized one. While that has been somehow toned down this year, it is still much less of a procedural than it was in years before. Nothing wrong with that and I happen to prefer it this way but the truth is that serialized shows tend to erode viewers as they grow old and we've seen that phenomenon multiple times. That's why is often smart for these hybrid shows to start more procedural and go into serials later when they have syndication on their side (Fringe is probably the best example of that). This rejection is probably more felt with the CBS audience which is not used to serials. The show has gotten way more complicated than before and while I enjoy it, it's very hard for a casual to tune in and enjoy the episode since there are multiple recurring characters/ plots that are hard to relate with one another if you are not a hardcore viewer. I like it, but I can understand why it's harder for those that used to tune in just for the poi of the week to still enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it has anything to do with Carter's death, and I adored Carter.
I also loved the elevator scene.I didn't know emily & daniel had still so much chemistry left!It blew me away!
ReplyDeleteUrgh 1.3 for POI. I am hoping the crossover had an affect on the ratings and it will bounce back next week. If it doesn't I will be worried.
ReplyDeleteYeees i actually was rooting for them which is odd! They did a great job and their chemistry was amazing. But emily telling david she is amanda was by far the best scene. Emily nailed it! Cannot wait until sunday
ReplyDeleteCarter was a really loved character, and Taraji P. Henson has a strong fanbase. In addition, a lot of viewers really dislike Shaw (Sarah Shahi) and Root (Amy Acker) being made regulars since season 3.
ReplyDeleteNext week - November 19 - was Carter's last episode on "POI".
ReplyDeleteOuch for PoI, but learning now that CF was a big crossover episode (I don't follow any of the three, so I missed this info) it might diminish some of the pain. 1.3 is bad, regardless of the circumstances, but hopefully next week will be better.
ReplyDeleteThey have still got it,i just hope they keep moving in the right direction as now, especially now that whiny charlotte is out of the picture!
ReplyDeleteYou're quite right. For some reason I moved a year on from The Devil's Share.
ReplyDeleteYeah me too. I hope they don't do anything stupid with victoria like make her have amnesia. That Would bring the ratings right back down. I am just looking extremly forward to sunday and i hope jack punches Ben. Gosh i hate ben
ReplyDeleteI am also hating louise. As a recurring character,i surely thought she would be gone by now but i was wrong.Ben is getting on my nerves.
ReplyDeleteDamn I think that's a series low for Shield in 18-34. Hopefully it adjusts up.
ReplyDeleteActually it ties the low, it has done 1.0s before
ReplyDeleteLouise is interesting because i still have no idea why she is actually there. My guess is that both Ben ans Louise will die by the end of this season. Recurring characters never stay alive for a long time and emily vancamp stated that there will be many deaths this season
ReplyDeletePOI would be dead if it wasn't for its syndication deal. And Chiacgo Fre really benefited from not having a dreadful leadin, didn't it?
ReplyDeleteI thought it was:
ReplyDelete- 2x01: 1.4
- 2x02: 1.2
- 2x03: 1.1
- 2x04: 1.1
- 2x05: 1.1
- 2x06: 1.3
I use final 18-34 ratings though and Shield is often adjusted up so maybe that's why there is a discrepancy. Hopefully the same happens tonight.
I don't understand how people can turn yesterday's episode off after half hour. It was so good.
ReplyDeleteProbably, I usually just see the preliminaries, so those 1.0s I've seen before may have been adjusted up- just like this one could also be adjusted up
ReplyDeleteAnd The Flash is even..
ReplyDeleteAOS ...4 million on ABC??? The Flash is getting 4 million on CW! AOS will go down as one of the most overated shows of all time. All that hype and crossover movie stuff (which never resulted in higher ratings) wasted.
ReplyDeleteHoly hell what happened to PoI? 1.3?? This is a major dip.. I mean ok there was a crossover with Chicago Fire going on if I understand correctly, but this is... odd. It was a pretty good episode.. hope it improves a little or jumps back op next week :(
ReplyDeleteRIP Shield... :'(
ReplyDeleteWhat a travesty the US viewing public is --- POI is just too superior a product for the audience. I remember how upsetting the cancellation of Firefly was in its time -- both such fun and rewarding shows.
ReplyDeleteTrue, but POI did a full-court press with Shahi interviewed in about 10 different places. With numbers like these, they're gonna end up in the Sunday death slot by Christmas.
ReplyDeleteSo what if she did?
ReplyDeleteSo crossover episodes pay off, Chicago Fire's rating were great, the episode actually wasn't that big a deal but congratulations anyway! I worry about POI - my favorite on Tuesday !!
ReplyDeleteJust saying that POI really hit the promotions hard as well.
ReplyDeleteMarvel's Agents of Shield is not getting cancelled, so no need to RIP it.
ReplyDeleteThe Devil's Share is one of my all time favorite POI episodes.
ReplyDeleteIt's the best, by a mile. As for my favourite, I do have a serious love for God Mode.
ReplyDeleteShame for forever & AOS as I really enjoy the shows :( crossover wasn't really much of a crossover for Chicago fire but I enjoyed anyway.
ReplyDeleteHow can you say that? DVR numbers matter a lot more then they did just a couple of years ago.
ReplyDeleteThose Aos numbers make me want to reach for the bottle.
ReplyDeleteThe female cast has really been fracturing to the POI audience!
ReplyDeleteI never loved Carter, but I know many who do and lost interest after her death. Shaw has had haters since her first episode and caused many to tune out. Likewise Root has her share of haters (myself included) that have not like the show nearly as much since she became a regular.
For me personally, Carter's death and Shaw's promotion never affected me one way or another, but Root's growing role last season actually caused me to stop watching the show live and this season I still have not gotten into the habit of watching the series live every Friday... or even desiring to catch the new episodes in the first day or two after they air.
In my opinion, it will go down as one of the worst launches of a show of all time.
ReplyDeleteIn the first half of Season 1, it was mostly boring and slow and showed little promise, so most of the viewers jumped ship.
A year later, it's downright fantastic but no one is left to see it. Marvel waited until way too late to pull out the big guns.
In retrospect, I think what AoS should've done is use a cornucopia of comic book characters and villains right from the first episode It works for Arrow, The Flash and perhaps even Gotham. With AoS, there are endless complaints online about the lack of significant comic characters.
I think it is more than just the points you raise though.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if adding more villains in the beginning would have helped at all. *Shrug*
I think a show needs to be great without the comic book elements to draw in and keep a larger audience than just the fans of the movies or comics. I personally find the movies quite overrated, but tuned into the series since I hoped it would work better in an hour long format. No such luck. I found it too light for my taste and at times downright boring.
After hearing how amazing the second half of the season was I tried again watching a few episodes in a row to see if it would draw me in and my opinion of the show did not change.
I think the show succeeds to a large degree for its niche audience but fails to reach the majority of people outside that audience.
"Special" episodes rarely get that much of a boost, as we've seen this week with Castle and H50. Add in that musical episodes annoy people, and many Cas fans went and pouted over him not being in this, and they were lucky to increase.
ReplyDeleteI think you would love it this season. It's gone much darker and the alien mythology is really interesting. I hated AoS during the first half of season 1. During latter half I liked it better once winter soldier aired but I fell in love with the show in season 3. Every thing got shaken up. Characters look and act more mature and dark. Coulson is still a bit cartoonish sometimes but last episode Clark Gregg killed it. Give it a try once more. Just watch the show from season 1 "turn turn turn" till now.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest reason for the drop is AoS. The show is mediocre, sometimes good - not that different from last season, or season 8, etc. I think it's natural it loses viewers as years pass, and it does seem somewhat aimless this season, but I don't think it's down to quality. I also don't see the "increasingly so." They're staying within their usual range.
ReplyDeleteThey haven't been down on a weekly basis this season.
ReplyDeleteNot really. Most viewers don't care about an episode number.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think the problem was in the first four to five episodes all these characters did not evoke any passion from me. Yes they were wise cracking ass kicking heroes but it felt like they tried too hard to be funny. Also they relied too much on name dropping and holographic images. People nowadays turn to other shows after giving 4 episodes a try. Comic book characters or not they should have jumped in with all guns blazing. It had the biggest premiere of recent times. How sad is it to see it come down to this after such a fabulous episode yesterday.
ReplyDeleteThe second time I tried to get into the show I watched "TRACKS" through "End of the Beginning", the third attempt I made I watched the Episode when Maria Hill returned... Don't recall the name though. Would the 4 or 5 episodes I missed really be that much different?
ReplyDeleteIf it is not cancelled like I predicted I may catch up during the summer...
I do like light shows to contrast with the usually more nuanced shows I watch so it would provide that change of pace... Wait and see...
lol ok thank you <3
ReplyDeleteI just hate that Forever is called a loser, My only hope is that ABC picks away at the comedys and leaves Forever to a full season. I just hate liking new shows only to see them struggle and then be canceled right away.. This is why I usually will not watch a new show until it makes it to 2nd or 3rd season, But alas, I broke my own rule...
ReplyDeleteIt also doesnt help that Forever's episodes are usually up online by Monday night.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the typical CBS viewer is not a fan of serials, and tunes out the moment shows become serialized. I even read comments on forums that some people who proclaimed to watch The Good Wife thought The Good Wife Season 5 (the most critically acclaimed season) was awful, and they should revert back to case of the week instead of complicating things. I guess that is the double trouble for CBS from now on, because fans of serials generally don't tune in to CBS, and loyal CBS viewers do not give CBS serials a chance, so CBS has pretty much limited itself to the procedural viewers (which has proven to be strongly consistently, but lately diminishing) as CBS also encounters difficulties launching new shows.
ReplyDeleteyes last season they was getting 1.1 and 1.2 and now there only getting .08 and .09 something happen from then too now.
ReplyDeleteWell, I respect your opinion but I feel that the show has really course-corrected in the 2nd half of Season 1 and especially this season, and I see a ton of people feeling this way too. They've fixed a lot of problems, like the lack of a major threat/villain (this season the Big Bads were introduced in the first 2 episodes whereas it took them over half a season last year), the slow pace (they're resolving storylines faster now - some even too fast for my tastes), the general sense of momentum, urgency and "big picture", the bland characterization (almost every character is more complex and likable now) and being too light with too many jokes.
ReplyDeleteThe issue of comic book characters doesn't matter to me personally. However, since it's the most frequent complaint I keep seeing about the show, I think it's something that would've helped them a lot when they launched it. With Arrow, you see fans praising them a lot with comments like "OMG, Deathstroke, Merlyn, Huntress, Black Canary, Suicide Squad, League of Assassins, Arsenal, etc. - this show is a DC fan's dream!". I feel that AoS's problem, at least at first, was alienating the comic book audience, not the general audience. I'm therefore not sure what its niche audience even is.
I agree. But in my opinion they will continue to go down the procedural route if only because that's the one that maximizes their syndication returns, something I believe CBS is valuing more and more, judging by the atrocities they do to their schedule just for the sake of protecting those syndication darlings (read: The Millers, soon Elementary)
ReplyDeleteOh I can see where AoS using elements and villains from the comics would make a big difference to fans of the comics! Not dissimilar to how I feel when I watch Game of Thrones and do not see so many characters I enjoyed make it to the TV series.
ReplyDeleteI love spy shows and clandestine organizations quite a bit so I had hopes I would like the show when it aired. Even after my initial disappointment I tried 2 more times to see if the improvements people mentioned would mean I would enjoy it more, but did not. Maybe it was just my mood at the time or maybe the show just is not for me..
Like I said above I may check out Season 2 over the Summer if the show gets renewed and people continue to praise its improvement. I still have a little hope I could enjoy it I guess.
I'm glad it has gotten better for fans of the series though!!
Other than getting an Avenger to guest-star, I honestly don't think anything can help AoS's ratings. It truly is sad and frustrating.
ReplyDeleteI really think that Netflix stream in the 3 month break and a really huge cliffhanger might help it like once last year. I don't think I can handle AOS being cancelled this yr last year I wouldn't have cared but this time nope!. It does bring in the male demo which brings more as revenue but its not enough.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it's getting renewed, but the low ratings frustrate me to no end.
ReplyDeleteMe too I don't understand it the s2 premier did quite well after that it was falling jenga blocks. Its just on a really bad night were nothing is working for ABC.
ReplyDelete
