Angels being more boring than ever, *never* fastforward anything in SPN before, I endured every second of Bitten and every bad one before....but just had to skip the angels scene this year. Wtf the naked Hannah?! ''We don't shower'' ''I know, but I'll do it because...Logic!''. Cass being more a fanservice than ever.....
Only interesting element here was Cole. But now guess he's gone too. We're left with what......the Mark? Angels civil war? Seem like a repeat of last year without a storyarc in the background.
Crowley's mom was a nice twist (I don't follow spoilers anymore, might have something to do with it), but the close-up was ridiculous
AMAZING EPISODE!!! :D Cas, Hannah and the kiss. Rowena is creepy and manipulative... and Crowley's mother!! :O I love my Winchester brothers in action together!! :D OMG DEAN, COLE AND SAM!! THAT WAS INTENSE!! ♥
I would give it a 7.5 or 8. It started out good and with lots of gore, but the wrap-up was disapppointing. The Dean/Cole thing turned out to be nothing much. Rowena is going to take some getting used to. The actress did well, but the character is kind of annoying right now. I miss Abbadon and Noami. No surprise Rowena is Crowley's mother. The fans guessed that already. I guess this is about the best we can get these days. And really, the show needs to cut Misha loose. His part was really nothing but an interruption in the action.
Wow, that promo was very misleading. Not a NAD episode, I thought that most of the threads worked. I actually liked the Hannah resolution, it felt honest and earned, to me.
The Cole resolution was rushed to the point that I'm not really sure he's gone. I half expect him to pop back up in the back half talking about knowing/seeing to much to go back to normal. At the same time I never team enjoyed the storyline or character so I'm kind of happy it's over
Rowena was a hoot, I'm really looking forward to seeing more of her. I didn't figure out the mother bit until Crowley walked into the cell. Early on I knew she'd be connected to Crowley but I figured ex/dead wife. I should have remembered that his mother was a witch.
This was a good episode that seemed to tie up a lot of loose ends (and starting 1 new one) and helped move things along. I'm actually happy that we don't have a mytharc hanging over our heads this season, these mini-arcs feel like a bit of relief from the past few years.
I haven't watched this one yet, but I hate the way Carver has chosen to tell Cas's stories. I find that the cuts to Cas and the angels really breaks up the momentum of an episode. Back in S8, I would feel the episode was moving along and then we would cut to Cas and the neverending angel civil war, and my attention would just fade.
Cas really works best either completely in the background and only appearing sporadically or w/the Winchesters. Putting him w/the Winchesters makes the most of his character, IMO.
Best part of the episode was the Dean/Cole fight and the speech. The rest was ok. Rowena was ok but pretty predictable. If it wasn't for the Dean/Cole scenes, it would be a forgettable episode.
It pains me to say this because I was a Cas fan a couple of years ago,but the Cas part was the best part because it hints to a possible departure for the character. The Winchester/witch part was the worst.
DAMN IT HANNAH WHY DID YOU LEAVE!!! i wanted you to stay with Castiel forever AARRGGHHH!!!!!!!!! i called rowena being crowley's mother when i heard her irish accent then remembered that crowley's irish and was a witch but her still being alive and NOT be a demon surprised me i mean that was 300 years ago how has not died and become a demon that would explain it but it's the same body because crowley recognized her right away, the cole and Dean was freaking intense, HANNAH WHY DID YOU LEAVE!!! I WANT YOU BACK ON THE SHOW NOW!!!!

I liked this one...kinda bummed they wrapped up Cole and Hannah's story so fast and I'm afraid for Cas's future now...like the guilt waiting on him because of Jimmy... :/ When I heard Rowena's accent I was like "maybe?" and then she was and I had a "hmm" moment. I like the direction they are going with it and it makes more sense now to have Crowley as a "Regular" this year since that will have a lot to do with his storyline. So far I love this season and the throwbacks to "minuscule" details of the past like that Crowley's mother was a witch and Jimmy Novak and his daughter Claire.
Haven't seen the last of Cole. He will be back to help the guys. 9 times out of ten alpha males will like that fight each other before with each other. Im glad its wrapping up, seems like they struggle more and more to come up with new ideas while trying to keep a solid story. Like s01 for the "villain of the week" style and s05 for the "ongoing story" layout. Don't get me wrong HUGE FAN. I sometimes wish we would have gone in other directions, for instance instead of Leviathan maybe we could have explored the other religions and their "Gods" a little more. Does anyone know (word for word) what crowley's mom says to him at the end?
It was a mix bag for me. I liked how it was directed ( Singer here, I believe?) and edited, more then usual number of decent special affects, witches are nasty and it was shown well. Rowena was good , I liked the actress and it certainly will take time to get use to that heavy Scottish accent. Mother thing was predicted long time ago, so it wasn't surprise for me. But it was too busy and rushed for my taste. Hanna storyline was wrapped up nicely, but Coles story was really anticlimactic. I liked fighting scene, but all Dean/Cole dialog was kind of cheesy. May be Cole'll be back, I still think its undercover try for a spin-off. Overall Good for me.
Mixed feelings. Too much going on, and a little light on the Winchesters.
Good things: - Rowena. I wasn't sold on her until her last scene – "Meooow" - Hannah's exit. Selfless, dignified and thoughtful. And not dead. - More callbacks (so many this season! Bravo, writers). "Son of a witch" (season 8); Jimmy Novak (season 4); vessels in general. - Dean and Cole's fight. Show needs more good fights. - Impala67 - More witch mythology! And Latin! - Direction, SFX. It was a pretty episode.
Bleh things: - Cole storyline wrap-up. Seemed ... abrupt. In fact, his presence in this episode was abrupt. - Hannah storyline wrap-up. Good (see above), but also abrupt. I guess it's a lead-in to Claire Novak's upcoming reappearance. - Too many abrupt storyline wrap-ups (Cole, Hannah) and storyline beginnings (Rowena, angel vessels) and in one episode.
Seriously looking forward to next week. LOVE Donna and Jody!
I think so. He played for years. It’s likely that Rowena found another way to stop or slow down the aging process.
9.16 Blade Runners
Sam: Then you must be Cuthbert Sinclair. Magnus: Ugh. I haven't gone by that moniker in, oh...57 years now. Dean: Well, you're looking good for a guy pushing...90? Magnus: Well, thanks, sport. There's a spell for damn near everything.
Very solid episode tonight. I didn't really find much to complain about personally. Nice closure for the Hannah ark. Cole story seems more left open for him to possibly return. Unlike most people, I actually kind of like his character and am interested in seeing what they could do with a "newbie hunter" storyline. Could be fun!
Crowley scenes were short but always funny. Not sold of Rowonda at all but being "Crowley's mother" could potentially make things more interesting in future episodes. Time will tell!
Overall I found this episode to be pretty well written and also moved the plot forward which was much needed for all characters.
Rowena being Crowley's mother.... well that was no shock as fans have been guessing that for months now. I am glad that the whole "You killed my father prepare to die" is gone. Cole was kind of annoying at first, but I am also hoping that he will eventually join up with the Winchesters seeing as how he studied up on demons. But Cole could also could be a liver eating monster like his dad too, so who knows. Over all, excellent episode, Row's introduction was great, she seems like she will be a great villain. It is a refreshing change from the whole Angel/Demon war thing.
That was actually amazingly good. I thought this episode was going to be terrible, and I hated the clue episode, and was only so so on the 200th, so I wasn't excited about this one. Then it turned out to be,for me, one of the best, most plot driven of the season. It was more interesting and had our characters being more 'themselves' then they've been in a while. I'm actually interested in Rowena, and I liked how they tactfully wrapped up the cole stuff. Dean broke my heart, even Hannah made me sad. I'm worried, big time, what this means for Cas. Logically, Jimmy should be dead and in heaven by now, with how many times the body has been destroyed, but .. I can so see the writers forgetting or twisting that fact, and bringing him back suddenly when Cas realizes what a bad state Jimmy's daughter is in. That would be bye bye Cas and Misha and I can't handle that :(.
I can't stand the Angels plot, but I love Cas. There can be Cas without some contrite, awful angel plot.
Dean and Sam don't really actively need Cas anymore, and with all that Hannah said..yeah, real worried they're going to go that route. And if they do, the only way I'm not going to be really frustrated/angry, is if they actually do it real justice and have an amazing episode or two from it. Cas is too important to the show and to his fans.
I feel strongly like they're wrapping everything up this season. There are terribly few hunts for the boys, no major bad guys or plot arcs, the Angels and Demons seem mostly finished. The mark of Cain seems a moot point since it essentially just makes dean immortal (has the mark, dies, becomes a demon, gets cured, is alive, all in a confident three episode arc). All that's left is to do something with the mark.
I'm sorry but I /really/ hate the concept of the boys dying in a blaze of fire and the show ending. I mean, jeeze, there /are/ ways for them to end happy. Find a fugging beach front to retire to, for Petes sake!
Too many plots. I think with less mediocre direction, the episode could have flowed better, but even then, it was a lot. I thought the last Hannah/Cas scenes were beautifully done, but it all but came out of nowhere.
I like the idea of Cole's story being a way for Dean to stop another version of himself from being created, to declare himself dead while possibly finding a new life, but I won't be surprised if we see him again.
Even with the usual female body count, I felt like most of the women in the episode almost seemed real. The prostitute who took the opportunity to stab the pimp to death and then ran out of the room to be sick. The prostitute who ran away from Rowena while she had the chance. The poor woman turned into a dog.
I was pleasantly surprised that the guy who was reporting to Crowley wasn't killed. I kept waiting for Crowley to kill him to punish him for his mistakes, and the show would see this as some badass moment. I can tolerate Crowley more when he isn't given this type of faux-edgy material. It makes him seem more like a leader, less like a brat.
Seriously though, I can't remember the last time someone used an angel blade/killed a demon and were shocked at the result, the last time this wasn't treated as some typical part of the universe, no big deal.
I will say that for a show that doesn't scare me very much, some of the gore in this episode was surprisingly effective - mainly the waiter who boiled from the inside out. The last shot of him as they walked out of the restaurant gave me a chill.
Dean's speach would be great if it wasn't the 100th time we heard it. The same "I hate myself, I'm past saving" yada, yada. Time to try something new writers. And surprise, he is lying to Sam again. I think after the 200th episode and everything he went through, he'd learn the lesson, but guess I'm wrong. Seriously, if my brother made me take a 8 hrs trip, tricking me to get laid, I'd punch him at least. Even if the scene was funny.
An average episode. The emotional part was the way Hannah's storyline was wrapped. Really kind, thoughful and beatiful.
Poor Jared wasted time going to Vancouver to film virtually nothing for the episode when he could have been home with his family. They could have given him all the episode off and the next 3 and it would be fine because he has literally nothing to do. The second half of the season isnt goingt obe be any better as its already been hinted at by Jared that Sam's storyline is done for the season. The other storylines need to be be more interesting and better written. Cas and the angels are an absolute bore feast, Dean is still the whiniest whiner who ever whined but I do like Rowena hopefully they use her wisely and make her a really big bad for the rest of the season. Crowley needs to go at the end of the season, Cas too probably. Cole will likely be back through the season as Dean's new BFF. Hannah? Not sure where thats supposed to be going. Man I hope next week is better, Jody and Donna will be a welcome change from all the Dean, Crowley, Cas angst.
I’m pisssssed off. Here she was: the first angel since forever who helped Castiel, who cared about him, who tried to understand him, who was his FRIEND and his sidekick and what? Once again, surprises!, surprises!, f... you Castiel, you are going to be alone. And f... good female characters, who needs them? Flush all down the toilet. What a surprise *sarcasm*
That's funny, Pete, b/c I thought the same thing about that guy. I caught the very end of the episode (I still haven't watched the entire thing), but I also expected Crowley to kill that guy. I was shocked when he didn't. That was a nice change. Less predictable.
All I can say is thank you for posting this comment. I said the same thing last night to some friends of mine. This speech has been said by Dean many, many times and there he is lying to Sam again. However, I do feel Sam knows that Dean is lying to him. They commented earlier in the year about each brother having their own personal arc. Maybe this is the start of Dean's, where he has to believe he is worth something and he is someone who deserves saving. I think JC commented about Dean learning all this again. I am thinking Sam has a big part to play in this or I should say I hope so because we never know what TPTB will give us.
Sam's stories don't end, they go on and on and on. Only Dean's stories end abruptly and then are resurrected as Sam's. I'm sure the second half will be all about another version of what's wrong with Sam and I'm sure he'll be dying, yet again.
Yes, Dean gets the same speech over and over, which while sad, it's still powerful thanks to the acting talents of Jensen. However, I too am tired of Dean tearing himself down and then the only reason he has to go on living is that something will be wrong with Sam, for the umpteenth time and Dean becomes the usual cape-holder while Sam once again gets the mytharc and the hero story. I don't understand why the show can't write equally for two leads or more, other shows do it effortlessly. These writers can't write beyond 12 year old fanfiction. As for Dean lying to Sam, really? Sam lied to Dean since season 4 but that was ok, but Dean should always be truthful to Sam? Even when Sam takes Dean's words and throws them back at him to hurt him? Dean should never trust Sam with his true feelings, because Sam uses them to tear Dean down and build himself up. I'm sure that will happen again, soon. Sam is nothing if not self-serving. I for one am glad Hannah is gone, since the angel story was boring as all heck. No, she wasn't the best thing that happened to Cas, she was dragging the story down.
You know how you sometimes people watch a show, or horror flick, just because it's so campy or bad it becomes mesmerizing. I went through a Xena period for that reason. I felt like that watching the first 25 minutes of the witch storyline. I know it was 25 minutes because I was looking at the clock debating whether to change the station. Because I really didn't have anything else to watch at that time, the show stayed on. I can't really critique the witch storyline because I honestly have no memory of what happened, other than hearing confirmation that she was Crowley's mother. I was so focused on how bad it was that I missed the plot. The last time that happened to me with this show was Bloodlines.
I do, however, remember the other parts. Starting with the Hannah one, we get a gratuitous scene of her taking off her clothes. Whether that was there for giggles, for a sensational promo tease, or to wind up a certain group in the fandom, I can only guess, but it didn't have a point in advancing the plot and didn't belong there. The storyline got sort of better from there - I say "sort of" because it was uneven. On the plus side, it turned into a personal story that was sympathetic (both on the part of Hannah and Caroline). It also took steps in addressing a plot point that's been neglected up until now, and that's whether angels still need consent. On the negative side, it seems inconsistent with the mythology. Hannah doesn't address the question whether Caroline ever gave her consent, and if Caroline was screaming inside her, it appears she didn't. Last year's Sam possession storyline was built around the fact that if Sam learns he is possessed, he has the power to expel the angel. Why did Caroline not have this same power? There's often griping that the writers don't seem to have watched the earlier seasons, but when I seem something like this, I question whether Berens watched last year. I liked that it showed Cas acknowledging Jimmy and what he's done to him. This, combined with failing grace, and the reappearance of Claire Novak to come, seems to point toward Cas giving up his vessel, and I'm very ready for this to happen and the angel storyline to end. I'm probably being wildly overoptimistic in hoping that we get rid of Cas before the midseason break.
Finally, we had the Cole storyline. They built up this story like it was going to somewhere, but Cole gets a look of the Dean sympathetic eyes, and the story goes "poof." This is Benny 2.0, where they bring in a character who has the potential to do some damage and actually create some tension, but Dean bonds with the character and then there's no story anymore.
Overall, the episode was a jumble of three different storylines with bad pacing. This show is so wildly uneven - not just from season to season, but from episode to episode, and even from storyline to storyline within the same episode.
Well, I think this week's angel plot turned out good. Plus, the case was solid and I thought it had some good points. One of the better episodes these years, despite its weaknesses
Yeah, I thought Jimmy was dead. He exploded or something in both the S4 and S5 finales, right? That vessel should totally be dead at this point, right?
this season has been a little disappointing i feel like cw is gonna make a spin off based on cole char. his back story also turned out good.his dad was a monster and a rare one too according to dean. also he is a special forces soldier . this all leads me to think he might join spn as a regular and when the time comes off they will make a spin off show.
So hope to never see Hannah again, never liked her. Other than her enjoyed the rest of the ep, all the talks even Hannah and Cas. Crowley's mom was a shock to me...loved it.
Considering angels need consent to possess, there's no question that Caroline did consent. The fact that she may be liking being possessed anymore isn't something new, I mean Jimmy, he clearly didn't want to be a vessel again, but did so for his daughter.
You are perfect in the general speech with no facts check, but anything to hate Sam for is perfect to you.
Can you tell when the last time Sam lied to Dean about a major thing, Sam's big share of lies were in S4, it was 6 years ago, but sure that is always perfect excuse for Dean to lie all the time!
Also can you say when Sam throw Dean's words back to him, because it was again in S4, and it wasn't to hurt Dean, it was a fact because Dean didn't turn back from hell completely himself and was affected so much, but again since that time it never happened again, if you have any examples please share with the class instead of the generic same hateful nonsense the haters always use against Sam.
You just will always defend Dean by saying "Come on, Sam did that before years ago, so Dean can do the same over and over", but you forget that two wrongs don't make a right, if Dean think Sam was wrong when he lied, so he shouldn't do the same, and of course he shouldn't blame Sam if he lied about anything in the future because Dean always lie too, and let the cycle continue.
If Dean shouldn't trust Sam again, what about he actually man up and tell Sam I don't want to talk, why he asked Sam to back to hunting with the promise of talking if anything even small felt wrong? Sam's life which was in the line while trying to save Dean, so Dean sharing the truth about what he feels is the least thing he can do, so they can face the thing early, not waiting till it's to late, or you think Dean wants to wait to completely lose it and maybe this time he succeed in killing Sam?!
But sure Dean will continue to lie like he always do, he will keep things to himself till it go so far, then he will give more and more whiny speeches which stopped to be effective or hold any meaning any more!
Dean's MOC story began with S9EP11 and it's still the major story till now and who knows when it will end, but sure nothing is going to be enough for you, you want Sam to have nothing and it all be about Dean. can you tell me what Sam's story now which don't end?
yes that's what a am getting sick of too Dean's I hate myself Crap so now you get the right to say you want not to be saved but you take that rights way from Sam come on. And Lying too Sam again it getting sicking ok but I the Ep was ok too me no big thing.
yes I DB is gone and his soul is fine now and the closing of the gates of hell was a big fail and the Angel thing it done what more can happing and he did not go full on Demon like Dean did I just happy Sam it ok but am Mad he is not getting the POV like he kind of did back when the show was good.
I figured it was his mother once she started talking with the Scottish accent and Crowley was born in Scotland so wasn't hard to piece the two together lol
Last year's Sam possession storyline was built around the fact that if Sam learns he is possessed, he has the power to expel the angel. Why did Caroline not have this same power?
I think the implication has always been that many possessed people have tried to fight against the entity possessing them once they realized what they were in for but it’s extremely hard to win.
9.10 Road Trip
Castiel: Listen to me. Sam is strong. If he knew an angel was possessing him, he could fight. He could cast the angel out.
Gadreel: Give up, boy. You're not strong enough. Crowley: Take control, Sam! Cast him out! Sam [only gets a few words out before being choked]: Get out of my -- Gadreel: you sure you want me to go? Maybe I'm the only thing holding you together. I leave, you might die. Sam [does a trick move and gets the upper hand. He stands and presses his foot down on Gadreel's neck]: I said get...the hell...Out!
Caroline screaming out for her husband and for life back wasn’t enough to eject the angel.
I think Castiel had faith in Sam because he knew that Lucifer had been a lot stronger than Gadreel.
In addition, Sam had been tricked into saying yes to Gadreel. That might have made it more difficult for the angel to keep Sam as his vessel.
Double standards, Sali, double standards. If I'm against a lying person, I should not lie too. If I'm so against a partnership with a demon like Ruby, I should not be buddy with the King of Hell, or even go with him to search for Cain, when the said King killed people I saved before, like Sarah Blade.
I wonder if it was Sam doing it this time, what fandom would think?
In addition, Sam had been tricked into saying yes to Gadreel. That might have made it more difficult for the angel to keep Sam as his vessel.
I think this difference is paramount. FakeZeke/Gadreel stressed the importance of Sam not finding out that he had been tricked into being possessed. 'Consent' is a very big deal to angels even they play fast and loose with the rules (S9) or by strong-arm threats (S5),
I think Crowley was honestly shocked in 10.03 when a demon said 'Stop', went on to enumerate how Crowley had let 'Hell' down and then calmly immolated himself with Holy Oil fire. Crowley is learning he needs to pay more attention to his 'constituents'; the 'sex trade for souls' was 'tacky' but no where near as outright skeevy as Time for a Weddings making deals and then arranging accidents.
In addition, Sam had been tricked into saying yes to Gadreel. That might have made it more difficult for the angel to keep Sam as his vessel.
I tend to agree that a random yes to a different question from an angel pretending to be someone he's not shouldn't count as consent, but the show took the stand that it did count.
On Sam's fight with Gadreel, considering this wasn't a physical battle, but instead taking place inside his head, so a matter of will, I think the fact that Sam was physically dying and didn't have much to live for anyway, compared with Caroline who was leaving a family and presumably a much happier life, should have been a factor. And Sam went into the Lucifer situation highly motivated.
Anyway, I think the rules around angel possession have become muddied and this would have been a good opportunity to clarify them. Thanks for responding though.
I think there's a question. Sam last year said yes to a different question, while unconscious, to a figure he believed to be someone else. They were seriously bending the definition of consent with that one.
Also, we had scenes last season of entire church choirs, and biker bar populations, all being possessed. We weren't shown how the consent happened, but it strains believability to suggest that every single one of those people knowingly consented. And not a single one tried to eject the angel when they realized the angels were just interested in fighting each other to the death.
Did anyone ever suggest Sam has a storyline this season? There was a line about Sam crossing lines to find Dean, but that could just be a scene for all we know. We may have already had it with the flashback about the man Dean killed.
so true! It like why do they keep on doing that then if the actors even say its not right? and I am happy Jensen said that too Sam does need a little more POV and there not giving him that anymore.
Hmmm . . . . I guess that could have made an impression on him. He was acting pretty pathetic w/r/t Demon!Dean (something I never quite understood), and I'm sure he lost a lot of "face" w/his peeps during that period.
My sister and I watched the episode last night, and after the first scene w/that guy, she said, "Wow. I'm surprised Crowley didn't just kill him." It's funny how so many of us thought he would do that. It's nice they changed it up some.
Yeah . . . what is that about? Cas's real family knows the real deal w/r/t Jimmy so why would his picture be up on a "Missing" notice or whatever. I haven't seen TR in a while, but didn't the wife see the angel overtake her daughter? Didn't the daughter consent to the angel taking her body? Didn't they see the angel leave the daughter and go into Cas? Jimmy is not missing. They know what happened to Jimmy.
I tend to agree that a random yes to a different question from an angel pretending to be someone he's not shouldn't count as consent, but the show took the stand that it did count.
Gadreel/Dean used certain words to prime Sam for the possession. (“I can fix this, okay? But not if you shut me out.” ”But you got to let me in, man.”)
I think Gadreel was able to possess Sam because of Sam’s implicit trust in Dean. Dean let the angel in.
Sam had been tricked into saying yes to the angel so Gadreel had to hide his presence. It wasn’t a normal possession.
I’m not sure what you mean by that.
Crowley told Sam, “Because Dean's sent me, Bullwinkle, the real Dean. I'll make this quick -- you've been possessed by an angel. He's got you packed away in some dusty corner of your own mind, and I'm here to break you out.”
Then Sam remembered everything that had happened when Gadreel had been in control.
Sam: Did I kill Kevin? Crowley: No, you didn't. He did. You need to take control, Sam. Blow it up and cast that punk-ass holy roller out!
Thus, Sam had plenty of motivation to cast the angel out.
Caroline was screaming out but I think that taking control is more about inner strength.
But his body exploded at the end of S4, right? I know it did at the end of S5. I would think that would have killed "Jimmy" finally. God brought back Cas. Why would he bring back Jimmy just to be held captive in his own body when Jimmy's spirit could have gone to Heaven? Plus, when Metatron took Cas's grace - the part that makes one an angel - Cas didn't become Jimmy; he remained Cas. I'm pretty sure Jimmy is gone.
I tend to agree that Jimmy probably moved on to Heaven, but it doesn't seem to be that hard for angels to bring back souls from Heaven. This isn't exactly the same thing, but Sam was able to bring Bobby's soul out of Hell even though he's only human. I would guess the part about bringing a dead body back to life would be the tougher part, but in the case of Jimmy/Cas, it's already been done. The body would just need to be resouled the way Soulless Sam was resoulled. If Cas is trying to make amends, he might attempt to find Jimmy's soul so that he can be with his family.
I don't think you can call something consent when a person doesn't know what he or she is agreeing to, regardless of how the words are twisted. But we can agree to disagree on this.
My issue with the Caroline part is it seems to be conveniently forgotten that people were written as having the ability to cast angels out. Maybe Caroline was motivated enough to do it, or maybe she wasn't. Maybe she didn't even know she had the option. I think this point should have been addressed in the episode since Hannah was talking about how unhappy Caroline was with the possession for continuity reasons.
i would appreciate some consistency with castiel's writing: first he goes against all angels and heaven to side with his charge, then he tries to advocate free will to the angels, later he loses a whole angel army cuz of his feelings for dean...and now he's in a crusade to get all the angels away from earth, denies them free will going as far as killing them for wanting to stay back, AND says feelings are an infestation to be avoided at all cost and that the mission is above everything else?! is poor jimmy novak possessed by a time travelling ressurected uriel these days?!
I'd definitely watch Supernatural: Cole the Newbie Hunter. His character is already a hundred times more interesting than the teenage hunter/monster characters they have been trying out in the past couple of seasons. Writers, please make this happen!
This episode is my second favorite this season. I really liked Cole, I liked how he had an actual character 'arc' even though he didn't get much screen time. Does anyone else remember Alex Krycek from The X-Files? He reminds me of him. He's the "bad guy" and kind of a jerk, but you like him because you just *know* he isn't completely evil.
This is also the second time I've re-watched an episode this season.
Dubious consent has always been shown to be enough for the angels. (But really, is there such a thing as “dubious consent”?)
I think Gadreel was able to possess Sam because Sam had been so open and trusting of Dean when Sam had said “yes” to him. Gadreel had been able to interpret the situation as Sam having given Dean the power to make a choice for him. Dean thought that letting an angel in was the only way so Gadreel was able to possess Sam.
My issue with the Caroline part is it seems to be conveniently forgotten that people were written as having the ability to cast angels out.
I think the show has established that Sam is an exception to the rule. Sam had said “yes” to Lucifer but he had still been strong enough to take control. Thus, an angel like Gadreel would not be strong enough to force Sam to be possessed once Sam would become aware of the situation.
Caroline hadn’t been stronger than the angel possessing her because most humans aren’t. It takes more than being in anguish to cast an angel out or to take control momentarily. That’s one of the reasons why angels have to get a “yes” in the first place in order to possess someone. Yet the angels have gone against the spirit of the law.
there just making it too soapy right now with Jimmy Daughter showing up and all in 2 weeks Cas just really has nothing too do heaven is good right? so why can't he go too the guys and help hunt that be better then this.
And Crowley pulled Grandpa Soup out of heaven in S6, right? So Cas should be able to pull Jimmy out if chose to. He could follow Hannah's example to make amends to Jimmy and his family.
True, but his friends, employer, creditors don't. We don't know what's happened to his wife and daughter since then. There may be an explanation for the "missing" reports. It's not as though his wife could tell the truth so she may have repeated him missing as a cover.
My initial knee-jerk reaction was that Dean was lying, but after a re-watch I'm not so sure. The thing is that what Dean did with Cole was heroic in the "saving people" sense. He saved Cole. Saving people isn't just about killing monsters. It's about preventing them from becoming monsters.
As Sam said Olivia last week, being a monster is a choice. Dean chose to not be a monster by talking Cole out of his vendetta. He needs to see that. So I guess I don't necessarily see Dean's speech as just a repeat of the all those times in the past, and he may not have been lying to Sam. We'll see.
I think Castiel underestimated some demons' ability to form real attachments to humans who they have to interact with - for varied reasons - regularly. We've seen it with 'Ruby (Sam)', 'Meg' (Sam and Dean) and Crowley (Sam and Dean). 'Close to humanized' Crowley is looking for empathy and desires to 'real' friends with Sam and Dean. He came closest to realizing this desire when Dean took on the MoC, was killed and resurrected by the First Blade as a demon.
It's a real treat when the show when the show didn't take the obvious route and have Crowley just snap his fingers and kill the fleeing 'sex trade' demon.
Yes, good point. Death made a point of saying that souls were virtually impossible to destroy, so the soul should be out there somewhere. It's really just a question of whether Cas is serious enough about putting humans first to give up his vessel.
I think I'd be much more receptive to the angel stories if they weren't always jammed into the mytharc episodes, or the ones where something interesting finally happens with Sam and Sean. It just waters down the Sam/Dean story and makes me resent the angel intrusion. Maybe they're afraid too many people won't watch episodes that don't have a strong Sam/Dean hook. But if the storyline isn't strong enough to hold its own, it shouldn't be one of the two major arcs of the season.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
ReplyDeleteOnly interesting element here was Cole.
ReplyDeleteCas, Hannah and the kiss. Rowena is creepy and manipulative... and Crowley's mother!! :O I love my Winchester brothers in action together!! :D OMG DEAN, COLE AND SAM!! THAT WAS INTENSE!! ♥
Does anyone know if Cain will be returning this season?
ReplyDeleteyes, episode 14 I believe
ReplyDeleteYes. Im glad. Hopefully he will take back the mark from Dean. I want the mark gone.
ReplyDeleteI would give it a 7.5 or 8.
ReplyDeleteThat was scary bad. I challenge anyone to make a case that Bugs or Route 66 were worse. I'll elaborate more in the morning, but man...
ReplyDeleteWow, that promo was very misleading. Not a NAD episode, I thought that most of the threads worked. I actually liked the Hannah resolution, it felt honest and earned, to me.
ReplyDeleteThe Cole resolution was rushed to the point that I'm not really sure he's gone.
ReplyDeleteCas really works best either completely in the background and only appearing sporadically or w/the Winchesters.
ReplyDeleteIt pains me to say this because I was a Cas fan a couple of years ago,but the Cas part was the best part because it hints to a possible departure for the character. The Winchester/witch part was the worst.
ReplyDeleteDAMN IT HANNAH WHY DID YOU LEAVE!!! i wanted you to stay with Castiel forever AARRGGHHH!!!!!!!!! i called rowena being crowley's mother when i heard her irish accent then remembered that crowley's irish and was a witch but her still being alive and NOT be a demon surprised me i mean that was 300 years ago how has not died and become a demon that would explain it but it's the same body because crowley recognized her right away, the cole and Dean was freaking intense, HANNAH WHY DID YOU LEAVE!!! I WANT YOU BACK ON THE SHOW NOW!!!!
ReplyDeleteyou sure? it's confirmed?
ReplyDeleteBy the actor during Burcon
ReplyDeletewasn't the witch in the Curious case of Dean Winchester like 900 years old or something?
ReplyDeletenew york Dylan. I can see what your saying... Samuel`s article is really great... on saturday I got a new Buick from earning $8113 this-past/five weeks and just a little over $10 thousand lass month. no-doubt about it, this really is the nicest-job Ive ever had. Scottish... ;)
ReplyDeleteI liked this one...kinda bummed they wrapped up Cole and Hannah's story so fast and I'm afraid for Cas's future now...like the guilt waiting on him because of Jimmy...
ReplyDeleteoh then awesome do you know if they're also bringing Abel
ReplyDeleteoh yeah my bad i get those those two confused lol
ReplyDeletebut was he on the same body though
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen the last of Cole.
ReplyDeleteMother?!?!?!?!
ReplyDeleteYou may want to watch the angels stuff. They had some nice talk about respect for vessels and humanity. It was a decent closure for Hannah.
ReplyDeleteI don't even think Bugs and Route 666 were worse than some season 1 episodes. Definitely not worse than much of season 5 or 6.
ReplyDeleteI'd say the episode was flat more than anything else.
ReplyDeleteBut it was too busy and rushed for my taste.
ReplyDeleteGood things:
- Rowena. I wasn't sold on her until her last scene – "Meooow"
- Hannah's exit. Selfless, dignified and thoughtful. And not dead.
- More callbacks (so many this season! Bravo, writers). "Son of a witch" (season 8); Jimmy Novak (season 4); vessels in general.
- Dean and Cole's fight. Show needs more good fights.
- Impala67
- More witch mythology! And Latin!
- Direction, SFX. It was a pretty episode.
Bleh things:
- Cole storyline wrap-up. Seemed ...
Hadn't thought of the spin-off aspect. You might be on to something. Guess we'll find out come spring when they try another backdoor pilot...
ReplyDeleteThis episode looks potentially good. :)
ReplyDeleteI sure as hell hope so! It would be interesting to see that!
ReplyDeleteI think so. He played for years. It’s likely that Rowena found another way to stop or slow down the aging process.
ReplyDelete9.16 Blade Runners
ReplyDeleteCrowley scenes were short but always funny.
ReplyDeleteThat was actually amazingly good.
ReplyDeleteI can't stand the Angels plot, but I love Cas.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of Cole's story being a way for Dean to stop another version of himself from being created, to declare himself dead while possibly finding a new life, but I won't be surprised if we see him again.
ReplyDeleteAn average episode.
ReplyDeleteThe other storylines need to be be more interesting and better written.
Here she was: the first angel since forever who helped Castiel, who cared
ReplyDeleteabout him, who tried to understand him, who was his FRIEND and his sidekick and
what? Once again, surprises!, surprises!, f... you Castiel, you are going to be
alone. And f... good female characters, who needs them? Flush all down the
toilet.
ReplyDeleteReally? But isn't Misha on contract? And his vessel should be dead or pretty messed up, right?
ReplyDeleteJimmy Novak is gone.
ReplyDeleteIt got to a point where I started to wonder if there would even be any demons left. I'm really glad they cut that out.
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is thank you for posting this comment.
ReplyDeleteSam's stories don't end, they go on and on and on. Only Dean's stories end abruptly and then are resurrected as Sam's. I'm sure the second half will be all about another version of what's wrong with Sam and I'm sure he'll be dying, yet again.
ReplyDeleteYes, Dean gets the same speech over and over, which while sad, it's still powerful thanks to the acting talents of Jensen. However, I too am tired of Dean tearing himself down and then the only reason he has to go on living is that something will be wrong with Sam, for the umpteenth time and Dean becomes the usual cape-holder while Sam once again gets the mytharc and the hero story.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why the show can't write equally for two leads or more, other shows do it effortlessly.
Rant warning ---
ReplyDeleteYou know how you sometimes people watch a show, or horror flick, just because it's so campy or bad it becomes mesmerizing.
Ha! I didn't even notice that Dean gave a speech. I tend to tune out the repetitive stuff.
ReplyDeleteWell, I think this week's angel plot turned out good. Plus, the case was solid and I thought it had some good points. One of the better episodes these years, despite its weaknesses
ReplyDeleteYeah, I thought Jimmy was dead. He exploded or something in both the S4 and S5 finales, right? That vessel should totally be dead at this point, right?
ReplyDeletethis season has been a little disappointing
ReplyDeletei feel like cw is gonna make a spin off based on cole char.
his back story also turned out good.his dad was a monster and a rare one too according to dean.
also he is a special forces soldier .
this all leads me to think he might join spn as a regular and when the time comes off they will make a spin off show.
So hope to never see Hannah again, never liked her. Other than her enjoyed the rest of the ep, all the talks even Hannah and Cas. Crowley's mom was a shock to me...loved it.
ReplyDeleteI was just starting to like Hannah and then she just leaves. Wow.
ReplyDeleteConsidering angels need consent to possess, there's no question that Caroline did consent. The fact that she may be liking being possessed anymore isn't something new, I mean Jimmy, he clearly didn't want to be a vessel again, but did so for his daughter.
ReplyDeleteYou are perfect in the general speech with no facts check, but anything to hate Sam for is perfect to you.
ReplyDeleteCan you tell when the last time Sam lied to Dean about a major thing, Sam's big share of lies were in S4, it was 6 years ago, but sure that is always perfect excuse for Dean to lie all the time!
ReplyDeleteI was sad she left I was liking her and it was sweet how she was talking about humanity made Cas look for his Vessel family.
ReplyDeletethey made Cas story too days of our lives for me now Why?
ReplyDeleteyes that's what a am getting sick of too Dean's I hate myself Crap so now you get the right to say you want not to be saved but you take that rights way from Sam come on. And Lying too Sam again it getting sicking ok but I the Ep was ok too me no big thing.
ReplyDeletewell you know Dean girls they think there all way's right just like Dean and that Sam girls are all way's wrong and that just sucks.
ReplyDeleteme too. I just wanting Sam too shot that dude who ever he was in the leg but we got Dean making a Speech again.
ReplyDeleteyes I DB is gone and his soul is fine now and the closing of the gates of hell was a big fail and the Angel thing it done what more can happing and he did not go full on Demon like Dean did I just happy Sam it ok but am Mad he is not getting the POV like he kind of did back when the show was good.
ReplyDeleteCROWLEY"S MOM AWESOME what a plot twist and she is cool I like her she can kill Demons in a cool way but the over stuff was just ok.
ReplyDeleteI figured it was his mother once she started talking with the Scottish accent and Crowley was born in Scotland so wasn't hard to piece the two together lol
ReplyDeleteLast year's Sam possession storyline was built around the fact that if Sam learns he is possessed, he has the power to expel the angel. Why did Caroline not have this same power?
ReplyDeleteI think the implication has always been that many possessed people have tried to fight against the entity possessing them once they realized what they were in for but it’s extremely hard to win.
9.10 Road Trip
Castiel: Listen to me. Sam is strong. If he knew an angel was possessing him, he could fight. He could cast the angel out.
Gadreel: Give up, boy. You're not strong enough.
Crowley: Take control, Sam! Cast him out!
Sam [only gets a few words out before being choked]: Get out of my --
Gadreel: you sure you want me to go? Maybe I'm the only thing holding you
together. I leave, you might die.
Sam [does a trick move and gets the upper hand. He stands and presses his foot
down on Gadreel's neck]: I said get...the hell...Out!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if it was Sam doing it this time, what fandom would think?
Well i stay in the dark with SPN, and am not as "crazed" about it as i was once, so it was a surprise to me, just like i like it.
ReplyDeleteWe never met his Dad right?
ReplyDeleteThat sucks. smh. They need to bring her back.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, Sam had been tricked into saying yes to Gadreel. That might
ReplyDeletehave made it more difficult for the angel to keep Sam as his vessel.
I think this difference is paramount. FakeZeke/Gadreel stressed the importance of Sam not finding out that he had been tricked into being possessed. 'Consent' is a very big deal to angels even they play fast and loose with the rules (S9) or by strong-arm threats (S5),
Oh i hope they don't do that lol
ReplyDeleteI think Crowley was honestly shocked in 10.03 when a demon said 'Stop', went on to enumerate how Crowley had let 'Hell' down and then calmly immolated himself with Holy Oil fire. Crowley is learning he needs to pay more attention to his 'constituents'; the 'sex trade for souls' was 'tacky' but no where near as outright skeevy as Time for a Weddings making deals and then arranging accidents.
ReplyDeleteHaha
ReplyDeleteIn addition, Sam had been tricked into saying yes to Gadreel. That might have made it more difficult for the angel to keep Sam as his vessel.
ReplyDeleteI tend to agree that a random yes to a different question from an angel pretending to be someone he's not shouldn't count as consent, but the show took the stand that it did count.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we had scenes last season of entire church choirs, and biker bar populations, all being possessed.
ReplyDeleteso true! It like why do they keep on doing that then if the actors even say its not right? and I am happy Jensen said that too Sam does need a little more POV and there not giving him that anymore.
ReplyDeleteHmmm . . . . I guess that could have made an impression on him. He was acting pretty pathetic w/r/t Demon!Dean (something I never quite understood), and I'm sure he lost a lot of "face" w/his peeps during that period.
ReplyDeleteMy sister and I watched the episode last night, and after the first scene w/that guy, she said, "Wow.

ReplyDeleteGadreel/Dean used certain words to prime Sam for the possession.
ReplyDeleteI tend to agree that Jimmy probably moved on to Heaven, but it doesn't seem to be that hard for angels to bring back souls from Heaven.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you can call something consent when a person doesn't know what he or she is agreeing to, regardless of how the words are twisted. But we can agree to disagree on this.
ReplyDeleteMy issue with the Caroline part is it seems to be conveniently forgotten that people were written as having the ability to cast angels out.
ReplyDeleteI'd definitely watch Supernatural: Cole the Newbie Hunter. His character is already a hundred times more interesting than the teenage hunter/monster characters they have been trying out in the past couple of seasons.
ReplyDeleteWriters, please make this happen!
ReplyDeleteThis is also the second time I've re-watched an episode this season.
I thought maybe they were mocking soap-opera close-ups!
ReplyDeleteDubious consent has always been shown to be enough for the angels. (But really, is there such a thing as “dubious consent”?)
ReplyDeleteI think Gadreel was able to possess Sam because Sam had been so open and trusting of Dean when Sam had said “yes” to him.
ReplyDeleteAnd Crowley pulled Grandpa Soup out of heaven in S6, right? So Cas should be able to pull Jimmy out if chose to. He could follow Hannah's example to make amends to Jimmy and his family.
ReplyDeleteTrue, but his friends, employer, creditors don't. We don't know what's happened to his wife and daughter since then. There may be an explanation for the "missing" reports. It's not as though his wife could tell the truth so she may have repeated him missing as a cover.
ReplyDeleteMy initial knee-jerk reaction was that Dean was lying, but after a re-watch I'm not so sure. The thing is that what Dean did with Cole was heroic in the "saving people" sense. He saved Cole. Saving people isn't just about killing monsters. It's about preventing them from becoming monsters.
ReplyDeleteAs Sam said Olivia last week, being a monster is a choice. Dean chose to not be a monster by talking Cole out of his vendetta. He needs to see that. So I guess I don't necessarily see Dean's speech as just a repeat of the all those times in the past, and he may not have been lying to Sam. We'll see.
It's been like that all season when they switch to the angels. The episode stalls to a crawl.
ReplyDeleteI think Castiel underestimated some demons' ability to form real attachments to humans who they have to interact with - for varied reasons - regularly.
ReplyDeleteIt's a real treat when the show when the show didn't take the obvious route and have Crowley just snap his fingers and kill the fleeing 'sex trade' demon.
Yes, good point. Death made a point of saying that souls were virtually impossible to destroy, so the soul should be out there somewhere. It's really just a question of whether Cas is serious enough about putting humans first to give up his vessel.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd be much more receptive to the angel stories if they weren't always jammed into the mytharc episodes, or the ones where something interesting finally happens with Sam and Sean.
