Overall it looks great! The storm troopers, X wing fighters and the Falcon definitely add to the nostalgia of the original trilogy while modernizing their looks just enough to show that time has passed. Very much looking forward to this. Although: baby soccer ball R2 looks a little too cutesy. Shades of Ewoks folks; which isn't good. And the Sith lightsabre with the short laser guards coming off the hilt just comes across as a gimmick and unnecessary.
I think some knowledge would be good since a chunk of the original trilogy characters are making appearences/have roles in the film along with a ton of new characters
Both! :) I love them too! Such a fun part of my childhood and I as an animal person, I never could understand the dislike of them?! It's nice to find other people who like them too! :)
i've asked this question for years but has never been answered: why do people hate the prequels so much that they even put it on shows with characters hating them so much
Let me start by saying that I don't "hate" the prequels. I dislike how things turned out because I think opportunities were wasted to tell a really compelling tragedy: which Star Wars is.
In the original Star Wars (Episode IV) the mythology and mystery of the story is explained when Luke and Ben are in Ben's home and Luke asks: "you fought in the clone wars?" and Ben goes on to explain how Luke's father fell to the dark side. They then go on to see the whole of Princess Lea's recording: "General Kenobi. Years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars...help me Obi Wan..you're my only hope" etc.
Its in this scene that you as the viewer are exposed to the size and scope of the struggle. How many years ago the galaxy was thrust into a horrible series of wars involving clones. Clone Wars (plural) not Clone War (singular). Its a small distinction but I think an important one. It was the time of the Jedi Knights before the "dark times".
All of this gave a level of gravitas, mystery and tragedy to the Star Wars mythology. You as the viewer knew there was a meaningful back story that helped provide context to what was happening in the current story. You didn't need to know the exact details; only that they were important.
With this in mind telling the prequel stories needed to live up to that level and generally it did provide the necessary ingredients but it failed in the compelling tragedy.
For example clones fighting battle droids took away from the real danger that was involved. Wars are violent and tragic which impact real people. We never really saw that. We saw some clone troopers die but on the other side it was mostly droids saying "roger roger" to each other before being chopped or blasted to pieces. The "Clone Wars" didn't carry the weight that I expected them to. In short the Clone Wars were sanitized to make them more watchable by PG rated audiences.
Anakin's reasons for falling to the dark side also didn't strike me as powerful enough. Chronologically he starts his path to the dark side when he kills the sand people in a rage after his mother dies. I know boys are supposed to love their mothers but really? That's why?
Also the love story was supposed to be the driving factor for Anakin. We already knew that Luke and Lea would need to be born and that Anakin and Padme would be their parents. That was a given. That being the case: couldn't they have made it a little less.. boring? It was very paint by numbers. You knew they would fall in love because they were supposed to. It was this love story that would eventually cause the fall of the Jedi and effect the whole galaxy. Couldn't they at least try to make it compelling? For my money if Padme had had an affair with Obi Wan causing the rift between Master and Padawan: THAT would have made more sense then Anakin falling to the dark side because he was afraid of to lose Padme: which is what happened. Anakin killing Padme in a jealous rage would have made more sense then her dying spontaneously from a broken heart: which is what happened.
Like i said: wasted opportunities. Oh and midichlorians!!??? WTF!!
Right, after moving I'm after a decade finally again in a city with an IMAX after it was closed! :D Alone for the Millennium Falcon sequences it has to be the biggest screen.
Millennium Falcon!!! A Sith Lord with a badass lightsaber!! And that little soccer ball bot is the cutest thing ever. I'am officially so hyped for this movie!
Agree about everything... i watched the first trilogy as a kid A LOT. The prequels felt disconected. I had this picture in my mind of a big scale war and Anakin doing the unspeakable for the greater good and that plan firing back.
For me it was like the actual war took a back seat for Anakin's love missfortune. And on a movie called Star Wars, that felt weird. Yes, they're beautiful movies, but the story and direction sucked.
I don't think Star Wars is a tragedy at all---it has tragic moments, but ultimately the Jedi represent a look at change being positive and transformative--It's pro-humanism, the power of the force is. George Lucas had those other things in it, to make "light" and "fun"--the argumentative point in the mythology, and realistic to life (as in the history of cultures and philosophy), is an argument about the best way of achieving that is. In the former expanded universe, along with what we see Luke do in the films, we come to realize through comparitve other time periods that Yoda is ultimately wrong about his approach to the force, because (much like game of thrones Love & Duty comparative), love and fear can be a good motivators for being a better person and aren't always negative aspect to life. The Irony of what happened based on what Yoda preaches was that it was Yoda (and Mace's) FEAR of Anakin (initiallydoesn't want to train him, constantly tells him they don't trust him, telling him love is bad), and not realizing what happening with Sidious/Palpatine that leads Anakin down the path it does---although we could render all points moot, if we are to believe in The Will of the Force = FATE in the Star Wars Universes/Cannon.
It's not a space opera, it's a space western with a lot of Eastern/mis Eastern aspects throne in--it's a family saga dramedy...
Looking at the Sith shots closer....it's a snowing forest, not a swamp like I thought, so maybe it is Endor frozen over or somewhere entirely new? Some initially speculated that Adam Driver's character is the main villain, but I'm not sure I buy that just yet.
You're entitled to your opinions, but just remembfr The Book od Genesis: Adam and Eve conceived/feel from grace (see planet "Geonosis", Jedi prophecy in which a virgin has a special child, ect) and in many ancient civilizations incest was apart of every day culture, not exclusive to Ancient Greeks, (in fact Americans and Europeans alike sometimes married their cousins up until first third of the last century)...but IMO George Lucas, despite some questionable execution choices and multiple drafts, doesn't strike me as a guy who wants to make full fledged tragedies. He often tells "coming of age stories"
PS: Their was also an interview with Kathleen Kennedy that stated that Abrams was right for this job because his work also reflects humanism (hence his own love of Star Wars and those allusions and references in his works)
I watched Star Wars The Clone Wars the one that aired on Cartoon Network and now Rebels and even tho they ain't connected to the film i shall enjoy it.
Me too. When we get close, I will be staying away from major spoilers. I'm actually really surprised we got a teaser so soon since they recently just went into post production. I do hope we get an extended or second teaser by February and maybe a full trailer sometime during the summer...
Not sure. Most rumors point to Adam Driver's character being the villain, others speculate Lupita Nyong'o and/or Gwendoline Christie also may be villains or "free lance" characters, but I wonder, despite abandoning the former EU (now LEGENDS), if they still might not barrow/rehash some of it, such as Luke falling to the dark side....One of the rumored plots revolved around finding Luke's hand with multiple characters searching for him. I do think the title and the voice over in the teaser could point to some kind of origin story or something laying dormant "awakening" an unbalance in the force.
An origin story to one of the greatest on screen villains would have been great if they didn't turn him into a whiny emo dbag.
Historical Materialist hit on a lot of my issues and Robot Chicken covered quite a bit as well.
In the end, the reason I hate the prequels (although Sigh wasn't horrible) is that Lucas seemed more enamored with the visuals and merchandizing them he was with telling a good story.
huh yeah that makes sense sometimes visuals and merchandizing are great but they shouldn't get in the way of telling a good story and respecting the chatracters
well Rebels is kind of connected, it's set fourteen years after Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and five years before Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope,
What?! There are people who don't like Ewoks? They're adorable! Who wouldn't love a walking, talking teddy bear? The ewok adventures were pretty much my favorite thing when I was eight and I felt so sad when I got old enough that it was no longer socially acceptable to watch and enjoy movies about animate teddy bears. Hats off to you for watching all 8 star wars movies.
In all honesty, it probably would only speak to a Star Wars fan--most of the things shown play to nostalgia (X-wing fighters, silly-looking droids, speeders in the desert, Mystery Sith Lord, The Millennium Falcon) and/or pop cultural things fans care about (like new light sabers, mystery Sith Lord, new/old locations--like seeing HOTH SNOW, wardrobe)
I actually think the visuals make for a neat contrast, because when you think about it, certain parts of the universe(s) might have been have technologically advanced and then the Empire formed and took a lot of it away...It makes what happens to Anakin feel and look more tragic as each trilogy reflects his hope (promise of better tomorrow) and his repression (falling to dark side--having to be "part machine")...
I love StarWars. But this trailer sucks. It gives us nothing. No information, not even a hint. Whoever cut it ... I would fire him. A trailer should make fans droll. This trailer does'nt really touch me. But I still can't wait ...
I doubt it will rely too heavily on previous characters beyond an advisory capacity and a bridge between previous series, but you never know. But knowing the basic mythology would probably help.
Like the new Kylo Ren/Storm Trooper art. Looking Forward to the Panel Today. I think we have just 40 mins or so to go! Hope we get footage on some of the other characters (and more BB-8 Please)
My father "has" it...if this is indeed Luke doing the narration (doesen't sound like Hamill but it makes more sense that way since its showing Vaders helmet at that exact point in the narration) we might see Vader at some point :D
I think we do see Luke touching R2D2 (mechanical hand and going through the family montage, "My father has it, my sister has it, and you have it"--seems to center around Luke) and that might go hand in hand with the melted Darth Vader helmet because in the scene with Luke and R2D2 a fires is burning as you can see red cinders sparking up in the shot....
I love it enough to get me really excited about movie. I'm ok with not seeing Luke in teasers as long he would be in actual trailer. And do think that mechanical hand touching R2D2 is Luke's.
I saw Phantom Menace in theaters twice (I was 15 and didn't have spending money), Clones 6 times and ROTS 7 times. I cannot see myself seeing this less than 10 times in theaters. Waiting for the blu will be too torturous without it. And only a year and a half later Episode VIII!
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
do you need to have seen the original movies to get this one?
ReplyDeleteCan't watch it, since I don't have Quicktime on my laptop.
ReplyDeleteya that link doesn't work
ReplyDeleteHere's a non-Quicktime link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMOVFvcNfvE
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOD. I need this in my life!
ReplyDeleteAnd I should marathon the original trilogy soon.
OMG I can't wait to see this ......in IMAX behbeh!
ReplyDeleteHope it'll be shown at a Imax?
I'm crying... They are very manly tears of joy...
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I am not the only one.
ReplyDeleteEpic !!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI marathoned all six films and the ewok adventures yesterday! ^^
ReplyDeleteAm I the only person completely underwhelmed by this? Hopefully the full trailer is better, whenever we get to see it.
ReplyDeletewho's the Big Bad in this movie i'm guessing Vader's dead and also Palpatine
ReplyDeleteOverall it looks great!
ReplyDeleteI think some knowledge would be good since a chunk of the original trilogy characters are making appearences/have roles in the film along with a ton of new characters
ReplyDeletewho thinks lightsabers are possible today LOL that would be so awesome
ReplyDeleteThere's no much to go on except that it looks pretty, but I need more than that to determine how I feel about it
ReplyDelete^^
ReplyDeletea couple of years from now I think we'll have some, technology had some really impressive breakthroughs over the past few years
ReplyDeleteI love that you watched the ewok adventures too. I used to be obsessed with those. Did you watch both movies or just one?
ReplyDeleteBoth! :) I love them too! Such a fun part of my childhood and I as an animal person, I never could understand the dislike of them?! It's nice to find other people who like them too! :)
ReplyDeletei've asked this question for years but has never been answered: why do people hate the prequels so much that they even put it on shows with characters hating them so much
ReplyDeleteCan't wait
ReplyDeleteI can answer for myself but it might be a little if you really want to know.
ReplyDeleteyeah cool i don't mind
ReplyDeleteOpinions, that's why.
ReplyDeletehuh?
ReplyDeleteYou the youtube link, which was provided in the meantime.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget to delve into the Droids and Ewoks cartoon series. ;)

ReplyDeleteLove Ewoks!
ReplyDeleteI don't have one near me either. The closest one is an hour away but this must be an imax experience!
ReplyDeleteMillennium Falcon!!! A Sith Lord with a badass lightsaber!! And that little soccer ball bot is the cutest thing ever. I'am officially so hyped for this movie!

Ah, yes! That little girl baby ewok was always SO cute (and they make her a regular-looking action figure now!)
ReplyDeleteEh...couldn't really make any sense. Tho the theme made me smile and hum along.
ReplyDeleteSeriously! 'Underwhelmed'!? Agh! As soon as the Millenium Falcon showed up and the music started I had tears in my eyes.

This is going to be epic.
ReplyDeleteThanks
ReplyDeleteI almost wish I hadn't watched it because now I'm gonna be obsessing about it for the next year eeek!
ReplyDeleteThe original characters are deemed not that IMportant since they don't appear in teaser.
ReplyDeleteManly tears of manliness.
ReplyDeleteLOl! That far! Must feel like its a galaxy a way!
ReplyDeletei09 has a pretty cool/interesting shot by shot rundown for anyone interested!

Aww man i got so excited watcing the trailer that i thought it was coming out next month! I forgot its next December..... what a bummer.
ReplyDeleteYa, it's gonna be a long year! Hahahaha!
ReplyDeleteI hope no one leaks the movie online before it comes out.I don't want to be spoiled.
ReplyDeleteProbably far far away but not too far for you will end in the Sith Lord Parking lot lmao.
ReplyDeleteI watched Star Wars The Clone Wars the one that aired on Cartoon Network and now Rebels and even tho they ain't connected to the film i shall enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI think the dark one is a former priest could explain why it looks like a cross lol.
ReplyDeleteThe dark force has awaken and the light? Geez what you all be doing sleeping for all these yrs haha.
ReplyDeleteThe dark force red lightsaber was badass but something tells me he's a former priest gone wrong lol.
What i learned was this:
Storm trooper wakes up helmetless in a desert clearly from a party gone wrong and like The Dark force has awaken and the light, Can you feel it?
Saw what looked like a robot with a soccer ball as it's body.
Fighters having a water race to see who's the fastest.
Storm Troopers getting ready for sky diving lessons without a parachute.
Dark one in the ones with a red light saber that looks like a Cross could be a former priest gone bad lol.
Finally Millennium Falcon making it's amazing return by flying in the sky and showing it's skills.
The shot of the Millennium Falcon at the end made me ridiculously giddy.
ReplyDeleteMe too. When we get close, I will be staying away from major spoilers. I'm actually really surprised we got a teaser so soon since they recently just went into post production. ReplyDeletethanks, i guess i thought people would like an origin story to the worst villain in Star Wars history
ReplyDeleteI agree with DarthLocke4. You'll probably enjoy it much more if you watch or at least have some knowledge of the previous movies.
ReplyDeleteHope teh trasiler looks better. I feel like im watching a John Carter sequel
ReplyDeleteAn origin story to one of the greatest on screen villains would have been great if they didn't turn him into a whiny emo dbag.

ReplyDeleteare stormtroopers SUPPOSED to be bad shots? because i always hear people making fun of them being bad shots
ReplyDeleteI know nothing about Star Wars(and honestly don't want to) and this looks lame.
ReplyDeleteThen why comment?
ReplyDeleteluke's right why ARE you here
ReplyDeleteWhat?! There are people who don't like Ewoks? They're adorable! Who wouldn't love a walking, talking teddy bear? I doubt it will rely too heavily on previous characters beyond an advisory capacity and a bridge between previous series, but you never know. But knowing the basic mythology would probably help.
ReplyDeleteHow? Where? How do I get a copy of the Ewok adventures!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou need to see the original movies to say you have lived :P
ReplyDeleteI bought my copy at hastings about a decade ago, but you could probably find it online somewhere.
ReplyDeleteI prefer Jawas to Ewoks.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, my interest in this revival has significantly dropped in the last few weeks...
ReplyDeleteI hope the full trailer doesn't disappoint. I love Star Wars but the first trailer was so underwhelming.
ReplyDeleteLike the new Kylo Ren/Storm Trooper art. Looking Forward to the Panel Today. I think we have just 40 mins or so to go! Hope we get footage on some of the other characters (and more BB-8 Please)
ReplyDeleteYep, looking forward to more footage
ReplyDeleteThe people saying that the new ball droid is impossible to do practically and must be CGI have been proven wrong.
ReplyDeleteOh my that new trailer was rather good!
ReplyDeleteYES! I git teary eyed with that last shot! XD
ReplyDeleteGreat new trailer! Fairly enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteMr Boyega is a captivating lead, think he will do fine.
But still H. Ford is the scene stealer.
Did Peter Mayhew have a stroke or something though? His speech was a bit slurred and had a hard time walking.
ReplyDeleteKylo confirmed to be related to skywalker I sure of it
ReplyDeleteHe's had both knees replaced and had pneumonia recently
ReplyDeleteNew teaser is great!
ReplyDeletewhat you think of Luke voiceover? we may not see him but we hear his voice again
ReplyDeleteI liked this new teaser a lot more than the first one. I'm sure Luke is the person they show with R2D2 (the show a mechanic hand).
ReplyDelete"Chewie, we're home"
ReplyDeleteheavy breathing...this...is....THE BEST THING EVVVVVEEEEERRRRRR
My father "has" it...if this is indeed Luke doing the narration (doesen't sound like Hamill but it makes more sense that way since its showing Vaders helmet at that exact point in the narration) we might see Vader at some point :D
ReplyDeleteAwww yes, this is giving me hope!
ReplyDeleteHAN AND CHEWIE.
ReplyDeleteI think I just made some bantha poo doo.
ReplyDeleteOh God! I love this. I still haven't watched the trailer. This is all I need.
ReplyDeleteI think we do see Luke touching R2D2 (mechanical hand and going through the family montage, "My father has it, my sister has it, and you have it"--seems to center around Luke) and that might go hand in hand with the melted Darth Vader helmet because in the scene with Luke and R2D2 a fires is burning as you can see red cinders sparking up in the shot....
ReplyDeleteOK, that new trailer was awesome. Is it December yet?
ReplyDeleteI love it enough to get me really excited about movie. I'm ok with not seeing Luke in teasers as long he would be in actual trailer. And do think that mechanical hand touching R2D2 is Luke's.
ReplyDeleteI saw Phantom Menace in theaters twice (I was 15 and didn't have spending money), Clones 6 times and ROTS 7 times. I cannot see myself seeing this less than 10 times in theaters. Waiting for the blu will be too torturous without it. And only a year and a half later Episode VIII!
ReplyDeleteThe best thing about the trailer was easily: "Chewie, we're home."
ReplyDeleteI'm still on the fence, but that new trailer? Aaaaaaaww.....
ReplyDeleteHappy May 4th everyone.
ReplyDeleteenjoy this day you will, LOL
ReplyDeleteGwen's character announced as Captain Phasma.
ReplyDeletecool Stormtrooper suit
ReplyDeleteI've been quite enjoying the vanity fair pics popping up left and right!
ReplyDeletelooks like star wars dominate friday and DC saturday
ReplyDeleteJuly 6th Update:
ReplyDeleteBummer! I was looking forward to another teaser! Hopefully they will introduce more cast though!
LMAO!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm getting really excited about the new film, the cast all seem great. Please be good!
ReplyDelete
