Madam Secretary - Need to Know - Review: "Flight of fancy"

On this week's Madam Secretary, we see a rebel group hijacking a plane with the Moldovian Prime Minsiter. Also, Henry returns to the NSA to supposedly work on a one-off mission.

Elizabeth's day begins with a visit from Prime Minister Diacov of Moldova. A rebel separist group led by General Kolba is launching an offensive against the Moldovan government and Diacov asks for American military tech to help them. Bess introduces him to Jim, a native Moldovian and former CIA specialised on counter-insurgency. The two head to Moldovia, but hours later Nadine tells Elizabeth that the plane has gone off the radar and that both Jim and Diacov are presumed dead. After informing Jim's wife, Elizabeth and the State Department wonder if the plane was shot down or if it went down due to a fault. It is later revealed that the plane actually wasn't shot down, but was in fact hijacked by General Kolba. Bess is looking for military intervention but that is met with some resistance. However, they eventually come up with a plan: while Elizabeth distracts the warlord, Navy SEALs attack the perimeter where the plane and its passengers are being held. Sadly, they find Diacov dead, but fortunately Jim is still alive.

Elsewhere in the hour, Henry's NSA handler asks him to place a bug. The target: Klaus Von Muhlberg, whom Henry has known for years and who might be associated with a terrorist. This literally leads to a game of chess as Klaus is suspicious about Henry, but he manages to place a bug inside one of the pieces of Klaus' chess set. Afterwards, Henry's handler says he is done but he wants to help so she will ask the President if he can continue to work for the NSA. However, Henry lies to Elizabeth and says it was just a one-off mission. This is bound to cause some friction especially because they now both have secretive jobs which they can't talk about.

Also of note, Russell makes something that looks like a joke (!), Jason has a potential new girlfriend by the name of Maddison, and Matt and Daisy's personal lives come to the office. There is also a big development in the Vincent Marsh case. Elizabeth gets the report about the plane crash and the investigator rules it an accident. However, it appears the flight's crew had not been polygraphed so Elizabeth suspects Marsh was murdered. She confides in her CIA friends Juliet and Isabelle and also tells them that George was murdered. This essentially puts all of them in danger. Juliet backs out because she has children, but Isabelle tells Elizabeth she's in.

This was another solid episode. The case of the week was interesting and made for some nice action-packed scenes. I also enjoyed Henry's storyline and am excited to see where it goes. As I said, this is gonna cause some friction in the McCord Mansion which I'm excited to see. There wasn't much focus on the rest of the family in this episode (in fact, Stevie was completely absent) but I was totally fine with that.

What did you think of this episode? Did the case of the week keep you interested? How do you feel about Henry returning to the NSA? And how do you think the Vincent Marsh investigation is going to turn out?

In the next episode, "So It Goes", Elizabeth, Henry and Isabelle launch their own investigation into the plane crash that killed Vincent Marsh. Needless to say, I'm highly anticipating this episode and I'm eager to learn more about Marsh' death. Here is the promo for "So It Goes":

  1. The investigation angle has a lot of potential. I think the Henry storyline is so-so. I don't dislike it per se, but I didn't mind that his sole focus was on her family life. It feels a bit too much of a coincidence that he too would have such a secretive job. But let's see how it goes.

  2. I am definitely looking forward to the investigation! You're right, it might be too much of a coincidence that they both have secretive jobs. But honestly, I am looking forward to seeing how it will all turn out. It's bound to cause some friction in their marriage.
