Last Week's Jane the Virgin, while a bit nonsensical(Here's looking at you, Rogelio's former Step daughters who are twins), was quite the episode. Jane, after learning that Michael had kept so much from her, called it quits with Michael and locked lips with Rafael. Petra hit her blackmailer with her dead lover's ashes, and Michael made a great discovery that may lead him to Sin Rostro. The show continues to be a quirky indulgence that doesn't seem to get sTale, so I can look past my annoyance at the writers persistence at putting Rafael and Jane together. There's no way it can last right?
Last we saw Petra, she had hit her blackmailer Ivonne, over the head with her ex-lover's ashes in her tiny new hotel room after being forced to leave the suite by Rafael. This week, while she keeps her blackmailer hostage,we get to see that Petra is a desperate woman with a secret who is almost willing to do anything to get out of her current situation. While, I'm not sure where this is going with Ivonne, the other part of her plan surely shakes things up by episode's end. Speaking of shaking, one of XO's student's wants to set up her up with her dad, but surprising XO, doesn't want to date now, not after having to set boundaries with Rogelio last week. Too bad both she and Rogelio are in denial about their feelings which leads to quite the hilarious double date.
Three Word Specific Teases: Coins, Rapping, #PLEASEFINDJANE
The High: I wasn't sure that I could actually root for Jane and Rafael, but this week may have sold me on them. I intially thought this was too rushed and rather bold to have them admit their feelings so quickly, but when you get down to it, the pair have a natural chemistry that works. It made it easier to swallow that Jane was able to let go of Michael so quickly to explore things with Rafael. Rafael makes Jane want to throw caution to the wind and if there is one thing that could have been said about our titular virgin is that she was indeed cautious for most of her life. Watching the two connect on a deeper level despite all the signs not to was fun to watch and I hope things work out and we get to see more of it.
The Gripe: Petra girl, what do you have going on? It was pretty murky trying to figure out what exactly she had going on this week. I mean yes, I got that she is holding Ivonne hostage so he wouldn't tell the person who is looking for her where she is, but what I didn't care for was everything after that. It almost felt at hour's end, after seeing what she sets in motion to get the money she needs, that everything with Ivonne seems like a little bit of a waste. Hopefully it pays off.
Overall thoughts: This episode was certainly an improvement over last week's wicked step-sister episode for sure. While it may seem that Jane-Rafael is a bit rushed, if you remain optimistic, you may find yourself surprised by how cute the two are together. I know, I cant wait to see what Chapter Eight has in store for the two after how this week ends. I was hoping the show wouldn't go full-on team Rafael just yet and it seems things are stirring that could make the battle for Jane's heart a bit more interesting. I do know another week has gone by and I still feel we are no closer to learning who Sin Rostro is or that we have made any progress in Jane's Lawsuit, but all in due time I suppose, but hopefully we get to it before it is actually Jane's due time.
I also want to take a minute to acknowledge that I have gotten some feedback on twitter and here concerning my gripe on Luisa and Rose. I want to say that I have no problem personally with them or the actresses who play them. I just felt that there were stories that were introduced with both characters that were just dropped without any mention, and that one of the characters was still around and she wasn't really doing anything. To me, it was frustrating that we got two very meaty plot points that were introduced but subsequently put on the back burner so that Rose could provide samples for the remodel and discover dead bodies with Rafael. To me, it felt like a waste of the actress and character, but that's my opinion. Hopefully, we eventually come back to those two things. I don't feel the characters have to be limited to those things, but having them involved in those two things is a much better option than standing around picking out wall patterns.
