The dad's out of the bag folks. Last week's Jane the Virgin ended on quite the tearful note, with Rogelio, revealing to Jane as she tried on wedding dresses that he was her father. Jane, rightfully, broke down after thinking her mother knew nothing of her father all these years but learned that Xiomara did in fact know who her father was and had been in contact with him. Only a few moments before had she been so happy to hear from Michael that he would keep the baby if she chose to, so to watch her crumble was disheartening. Jane couldn't cut everyone out could she? And that is where Chapter Five takes us.
Jane, naturally, curious as to who her father is, attempts to get know Rogelio this week to disastrous results. Not only does it go bad once, but the second time is just as messy, prompting what looks like do-over between the father-daughter pair on the horizon. Michael and his partner are still trying to get hot on the trail of who killed Roman, which requires him to speak to Rafael as they are investigating a murder that happened to his best friend at his hotel. The tension between the two over Jane is noticeable especially after Rafael has been clued in that Michael wants to keep his baby with Jane. After deducing at the last minute, before having arrest Petra and shatter his and Jane's world, that the suspect may be a bellboy they have got look at suspects within the hotel. Michael having to spend so much time in Rafael's vicinity is clearing getting under Rafael's skin. Finally, Poor Michael has to be the shoulder for Jane to cry on now that she knows that her mother has been keeping things from her, but how long does the fact that he has been keeping things from Jane stay hidden now that they are living together and she knows he is investigating Roman's murder? Plus, to top off that, his brother Billy is back in town and asking for money and trying to get to Michael through Jane by dating her coworker. (Erm, what?)
By hours end, expect to see the ice between the Villanueva women thaw out just a little, for there to be more blood shed on he carpets of the hotel(Yes, there's another murder), and for Petra to find a new way to keep Rafael married to her. For now...
Three Word Specific Teases: Jimmy Smits, Frisbee, Moisturizer.
The High: This week I really fell for Rogelio. Sure the guy appears to be selfish and shallow but he's still entertaining. Look closer and I swear you see something so much more than what it appears to be. He's gone through such great lengths to see Jane and to watch him grandstand to bond with her is equal parts awkward and adorable.I like that the writers aren't forcing a connection between the two of them so easily. They appear to practically have nothing in common, but you can't help but smile when he gets so excited to see her. You can tell he is generally excited to get to know this extension of him, however misguided his intentions might be.
The Gripe: Didn't Jane decide she was going to sue Luisa about 3 episodes ago? What's going on with that? Another week, no mention of anything court related. But for some reason Bridget Reagan's character is still around. I got flack on twitter for griping on it last week, but sadly it was more of the same this week. Her character is around, but for what reason it remains unclear. I have a slight theory that she may the drug dealer that Michael and his partner are looking for, but it's just a working theory. Until then I'll continue to be annoyed that it looks like Jane's plan to sue has been cast by the wayside for the moment, and that Luisa has spent two weeks MIA, yet Bridget Reagan is still around, not doing anything.
Overall Thoughts: Another Solid episode. While it wasn't my favorite, it was still good. It had some great moments with Rogelio and Jane. While others things happened, nothing that felt as interesting as the final minute or so. It'll be interesting to see where Jane lands on raising the baby after this week's episode for sure. I think in the end that was the focus of the episode, Jane wants so much for this child to not grow up like she did, but is it really avoidable? We'll have to wait and see.
