Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter after an event in London to mark the DVD release of the BBC series’ recently completed eighth season, showrunner Steven Moffat said that Peter Capaldi was returning.
"Yes, he’s confirmed,” Moffat said, although he later added that Jenna Coleman, who has played the Time Lord’s companion Clara Oswald for the past two years, had not, something that could fuel rumors in the U.K. press that she is to leave the show following the upcoming Christmas special.

Clara is one of my favorite companions. Sign it!
ReplyDeleteI'm already preparing for Clara's farewell during the christmas special... Moffat loves to make us cry on that day so im preparing for it..
ReplyDeleteI think this is the appropriate point for Clara to leave DW, Amy overstayed her welcome during Matt Smiths run and I don't want Clara to repeat that.
ReplyDeleteClara accompanied the Doctor the latter half of season 7 the entirety of season 8 and managed to become a huge part of Who history by being a part of each of the 50th anniversary specials.
Bringing in a new companion could not only serve the spirit of the ever-changing DW franchise but also to help make Capaldis run truly his own
Please no more Clara....... i wand Doctor Who, not Doctor Clara...
ReplyDeleteI really hope she stays. For me she has been the best companion/actress since the return of Doctor Who.
ReplyDeleteI think Clara has run her course. Danny is dead. She was Matt Smith's impossible girl and jumped into his timeline to set right his life stream. As the Capaldi Doctor pointed out when she said she did a good job at being the Doctor being good has nothing to do with it. Her character has grown beyond the bounds of a good companion and is becoming too much like the Doctor. A companion is there to balance the Doctor, not drive him deeper into megalomania.
ReplyDeleteThis was already announced in Australia that Clara would be leaving prior to her coming there for a con
ReplyDeleteI disagree with that. Yes Clara has become a "darker" companion and very Doctor like but she still remains one of the best companions of new series. Every companion has done bad things but what I like about Clara is that she owns her mistakes. I hated the way they glossed over Amy's dark side for example when she killed Kovarian. Sure she was conflicted for a bit but that was ignored as soon as they found out that the Doctor was alive.
ReplyDeleteAlso I don't think the Doctor should always rely on his companions to be a good man and one of the things that I liked about series 8 was the fact that we could see the "goodness" in this somewhat darker Doctor when we started seeing the darkness in Clara.
I am pretty sure it was previously announced Jenna / Clara would be written out in the Christmas episode.
ReplyDeleteI think she should stay for series 9 because the show has proven that Amy was Eleven's companion and Clara is Twelve's. I think Capaldi should stay for series 9 and maybe that Christmas special but not beyond that and I think Coleman should stay for series 9 to accompany him so that when the time comes for a new Doctor to be announced we can see a Doctor/Companion relationship without past baggage. And maybe even a new show runner.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't that Amy and Rory to a degree overstayed their welcome so much as the fact that for me during series 7 it felt like they were just there for no reason. And it felt like the only reason for them to be there if there was any was so that the show had an excuse to use alive River Song. They were a happily married couple and I didn't see the need for them to travel and in a way escape from their life when they seemed so happy together. Even though I don't think a companion has to be single to qualify as one being a married couple doesn't make for the best companion either. Again I think the whole point of Amy and Rory was River Song.
Capaldi and Coleman can make the show fresh on their own considering how good their dynamic is. Capaldi also doesn't need fresh blood to become an amazing Doctor he just needs time to develop. In fact I think Coleman and her portrayal of a more challenging companion for Twelve has helped Capaldi's Doctor.
it was rumoured it was actually never confirmed by the BBC, the media just ran with it without confirmation
ReplyDeleteenough of the torture Moffat, just give us the damn new name and then let us cry
ReplyDeleteso Moffat is just playing. she's sure to leave :(
ReplyDeleteI thought they had already announced that Clara would be gone and he'd get a new companion for the second part of the season.
ReplyDeleteIdk, I feel like this entire season was a struggle for balance in the Doctor and Clara's relationship and it would just be sad if she were to leave now that they've finally (sort of) figured themselves out. In all honesty, I think she'll sign. I mean, what's left for Clara in the average world? Even when Danny was alive it was clear that she couldn't let go of the thrill of travelling with the Doctor, now that Danny's gone, what, is she supposed to forget about her past adventures and live the rest of her life as a lonely english teacher? The Clara I know couldn't possibly be satisfied with that life, she craves more. The finale heavily implied that the only reason Clara didn't leave with the Doctor again was because she believed he'd found Gallifrey. Once she finds out that's not true, I don't see a good reason to keep them apart. Sure, they could kill her off, but I still feel that the entire 8th season would've been written differently if Jenna planned to leave after the christmas special. Maybe that's just me being hopefuI, I obviously wouldn't mind having her around for another season, considering she's been my favorite companion since Asylum.
ReplyDeleteI'm in denial, I'm in denial, I'm in denial !
ReplyDeleteSo I am just going to hang on to this little tinge of hope and wish for the impossible.
(And it seems like I can't even make a sentence without refering to Doctor Who. I am doomed.)
The Doctor needs a sidekick.
ReplyDeleteLike Batman and Robin.
He would be pretty lonely all by himself.
Having a sidekick gives the show the opportunity for more plots and subplots.
I just can't see that a companion, whether it's Jenna or someone else, wouldn't be signed to contract by this point, this is just typical moffat hype to cover Xmas spoilers imo
ReplyDeleteIndeed. You have a good point. :)
ReplyDeleteStill, it's a bit overwhelming (and very irritating) seeing statements (?) from all quarters about her leaving.
So, thank you !
God knows why they play these games. Hype for the show I guess, but fans don't need to be hyped and the general public doesn't take any notice, so meh, lol
ReplyDeleteOr not. It's perfectly possible she's already signed, and Moffat is just building suspense. Rule 1: the Doctor Lies. Rule 2: so does Steven Moffat. (There have certainly not been any announcements from anyone with real, official knowledge.)
ReplyDeleteI think there's pretty good odds Coleman is staying for series 9 and Moffat is messing with us, but I'd be sorely disappointed if Capaldi only stayed one more year. He's amazing in the role, seems to love doing it, and his Doctor has spent his whole first series growing and changing and getting to know his new self. It feels like Twelve's story is really just beginning.
ReplyDeleteI consider three years, (pretty standard for past Doctors) a bare minimum, but would love to see Capaldi stay even longer.
hope so but Jenna said she wanted to do teathre so another hint she leaves...
