The freshman season of NBC drama Constantine will consist of 13 episodes. The cast and crew of the series were informed on Friday that the series will halt production after completing production on the initial 13-episode order. Constantine will remain in its 10 PM Friday time slot for the remainder of its run. Constantine remains in contention for a second-season renewal.
NBC had to make a decision whether to keep Constantine in continuous production with little ratings information. While the series began production on a standard fall premiere production schedule, its launch was delayed until late October when NBC’s Friday genre block usually debuts, so the network had to make a call whether to order additional episodes after only four episodes had aired vs. at least seven, which is the norm for freshman series.
Constantine has not been a breakout the way fellow NBC Friday genre drama Grimm was in its debut. But NBC brass were probably encouraged by the freshman’s +38% week-to-week ratings jump for Episode 5 this Friday to a 1.1 among adults 18-49 in Live+Same day, the show’s highest mark since the series debut, and by its best retention of the Grimm lead-in, also since the series debut. Additionally, Constantine, based on the DC property, has strong fan base because of its comic origins and has seen big DVR lifts, most recently rising +81% in Live+3 for Episode 4, regarded by fans as a possible creative turning point in the series.
NBC has been supportive of the show, running a marathon of episodes on cable sibling Syfy this weekend and slating Constantine cast members to appear on the network’s broadcast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade next week.
It is not clear what NBC will air in the Friday 10 PM time period after Constantine’s run is over, though previous slot occupant Hannibal, which has been renewed for a third season, is considered a strong possibility. NBC has three new drama series on tap for midseason, Allegiance, Odyssey, Aquarius, as well as miniseries The Slap.
This is an accurately reported story. Our first season is 13 eps. Next season's fate is in YOUR hands. http://t.co/Ex8bbIKQK0 #Constantine

The producers are confidant. Constantine higher ratings than Hannibal and CLIMBING. Hannibal got 2nd season. So keep watching! #Constantine

Most likely to be cancelled.
ReplyDeletePlease everyone watch live! I really like this show, I have attached tweets straight from the producers to further emohasize this
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like they're putting more effort into this than usual. Usually they'd just not order extra episodes and not talk about it again until May when it didn't show on their 2015 schedule.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I loved the first couple of episodes I still think I'm going to wait until I know if there is a season 2 before binge watching it all though. (I'm not in America so my viewing wouldn't help it anyway.)
Get more people watchin and stop the cancellation talk
ReplyDeleteLess of that shit and more get more people watching
ReplyDeleteThis.
ReplyDeleteWe lost the Hellblazer comic two years ago at this time. Let's not have history repeat itself
I get the feeling this is going to turn into another Almost Human.
ReplyDeleteNBC will probably ask to get it cheaper since it's not the hit they were expecting. It does seem to have network support which works in its favor though.
I think I would actually shed legit tears if this got cancelled. I tuned in because of Matt Ryan and the pilot promo promised a darker premise (I love Hannibal, thought this would be right up my alley) and after Friday's episode, I downloaded Original Sins and plan to read it over my upcoming thanksgiving vacation. This will be the first comic I've read in over 20 years!
ReplyDeleteAnd Goyer wants to make a spin-off,hmm?
ReplyDeleteBtw, I don't watch it. I always thought it would be cancelled.
ReplyDeleteIn every news of this show I see you being negative, why?
ReplyDeleteIt only matters if you watch live if you're a Nielsen Box owner, which most people are not.
ReplyDeleteWas really enjoying this show too. Damn shame if it gets canceled. :/
ReplyDeleteSo can understand NBC and have nothing against short seasons and I wouldn't be surprised if it did come back for a S2 but I have to say if ifs not back until like October 2015 then having such a huge gap will not help ratings. Look at Sleepy Hollow it was off air for nearly 9 months and the ratings have dipped a lot, short seasons seem to work on cable networks but less so with the big ones.
ReplyDeleteSad but I will be optimistic every week that the ratings are steady enough that NBC will order at least 16 episodes for a second season (but I'll take anything) This show is getting incredibly good, broadcast TV could always use as many good genre shows as they can get. Plus I love Matt Ryan. I love this show almost as much as Sleepy Hollow. But anyway, the mythology they're building is very intriguing and I like what they've done with the comics despite what the diehards think. People... If you have a Nielson box please tune your TV in to this show every Friday!, :)
ReplyDeleteI just thought it was always going to be cancelled. It never really had a chance anyway...
ReplyDeleteBut why? You spends energy to express the same exact opinion about a tv show you don't care about, I'm really curious lol
ReplyDeleteI don't know why lol. Sorry for not giving you an answer.
ReplyDeletexD no problem
ReplyDeleteWas going to say the exact same thing.
ReplyDeleteAnd cancelled.
ReplyDeleteLOL, you're funny. As long as you don't have a Nielsen Ratings Box and participate this program you can watch your eyes out and it won't count!
ReplyDeleteMaybe Aquarius?
ReplyDeleteJust to get this out of the way -
ReplyDeleteIt's Supernatural that lifted from Hellblazer/Preacher. Not the other way around.
I wish I could but I live in Europe. I guess nobody is going to be discouraged by my comment. Was just setting things straight as so many people out there think that every viewer counts. Which is not true. And people who want to watch, will watch, regardless what's benn written, here.
ReplyDeletePeople can keep saying that and it fundamentally doesn't matter. Supernatural has been on the air for 10 years. This is TV. So this feels like a Supernatural without the uniqueness and with more misogyny.
ReplyDeleteI understand and thanks :) Those Neilsen Box's are stupid. Though one of the producers said streaming at NBC etc is also counted, so that's an alternative for non-Nielsen Box people :)
ReplyDeleteI would say this is a likely cancellation but now days networks dont make the most obvious descions. They may get it for really cheap and that would be enough of an incentive to renew regardless of the ratings.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing that Supernatural stole from Hellblazer was Castiel's outfit (which the makers of Supernatural have mentioned multiple times). Other than that the shows are just evil supernatural type shows. It's like saying Buffy lifted from Hellblazer. I will admit that Constantines title card is pretty much identical to Supernatural's though.
ReplyDeleteIt's a lot better than Supernatural is though these days and a lot better than Supernatural was on it's 5th episode. It's also a lot darker and hard hitting series. There was nothing in SPN's 10 years old run that was as horryfing as EP4's end.
ReplyDeleteI love Supernatural, but it always felt like a pretty watered down and simplified take on Supernatural. Now that we're finally getting the real deal on TV it would be a shame to loose it.
If it does end up getting cancelled at the end of the season,i hope they end it properly without all those frustrating cliffhangers!
ReplyDeletePart of me thinks they might put The Slap there. I believe it's only meant to be a miniseries with 8 episodes, so its whole purpose was probably to be schedule filler anyway. They could use it to bridge the gap till Hannibal is ready.
ReplyDeleteIt'll do REALLY poorly in the timeslot but of the other shows they have waiting I'd say The Slap would be the cheapest and easiest sacrifice. Plus timing wise, Constantine should probably finish in February. Then 8 episodes of The Slap takes it to April/May when Hannibal should be ready.
People please watch the show its awesome! Yes its only 13 eps but that doesn't mean that it wont get a second season. After the 4th ep things have gotten better. If you like Hellblazer than watch this show and spread the word it deserves more attention.
ReplyDeleteAquarius is rumored to go after The Voice when SofA finishes it 15-episode run.
ReplyDeleteThe Slap could act as schedule filler, but it'd do really poorly, like you said, since it highly incompatible with Grimm.
ReplyDeleteI just finished marathoning the 5 episodes that aired and I'm really digging this show, so I need it to get a S2. I'm not sure why they ordered the initial extra 3 episodes, this seems like a show that would benefit from a shorter season, especially if it becomes more serialized at some point.
ReplyDeleteThis is an effective cancellation IMO.
ReplyDeleteUnless there are major schedule commitments of the actors with other shows that can't be solved, I see no reason for Hannibal not to be rushed and brought back earlier. I mean, we are talking end of February which is still 3 months away. I can't believe they can't produce the episodes until then.
ReplyDeleteI can see where you are coming from but I know the producers and showrunners had big plans for a season final if the show got a full season and now we wont get to see it.
ReplyDeleteOh for sure, this was a bad time to announce it, but the order was for 3 extra episodes, unless you mean episode 16 as the season finale, you shouldn't count your chickens before they hatch. It really sucks that they told them while they were filming episode 13, I hope they can do reshoots and retool it for a season finale.
ReplyDeleteI'm all in for a second season, hopefully better and not as plotless, but how dare you compare Hannibal to Constantine? The finanical factors and more importantly the quality of both shows are SO different. It's a bit insulting to hear them bragging about slightly higher ratings.
ReplyDeleteFast tracking Hannibal looks like a strong possibility, I think they pre-empted it so that Constantine could have a back 9 order, but since it's not getting it Hannibal can come back sooner
ReplyDeleteRegardless of whether you think SPN is now (or ever was) good, whether you watch TV for horror or you think comic-book plotting is utter tripe, Constantine entered a market in which SPN has already existed in a successful manner (in that it has a majorly devoted fanbase and just aired its 200th episode). When that happens, the new market entrant has to differentiate itself. And taking the worst of the brothers' personality traits, stripping out the motivation of family and anything resembling a funny joke, and replacing it with a morally ambiguous (irredemptive?) lead, a sexual interest, and more gore isn't the kind of differentiation I was looking for (even given the horror that is the Carver era). They needed to show me something new and what they showed me was simply more trite and less coherent.
ReplyDeleteMost likely; it would take some sort of miracle to save the show now that NBC has decided not to give it back order
ReplyDeleteThe Slap stars Uma Thurman, no way that's being chucked into Constantine's slot!
ReplyDeleteSo these are the nights in which I think midseason dramas will premiere:
ReplyDeleteAquarius: Mondays after The Voice.
Allegiance: Thursdays after The Blacklist.
Odyssey: Sunday 9PM after The Appreantice.
Hannibal: Fridays after Grimm on February, as soon as Constantine ends its runs
I think there's plenty of new there. The monsters are different and most of all the hunter is different. Brothers were mostly clueless and violent. Constantine is expert and he wins with his brains. He;s also not a little goody two shoes that Winchesters are.
ReplyDeleteAside from the general "a story about people fighting monsters" threre isn't much those have in common. Supernatural is closer to Buffy than to Hellblazer and no ammount of dressing Castiel in trenchcoat will change that. And I don't remember anyone complaining that SPN shouldn't exist just because Buffy did chopping monsters into pieces earlier.
How is it bragging or comparing? They are just stated the facts that Hanninbal had similar ratings and got renewed which is cause for optimism.
ReplyDeleteSo stating a fact is hilarious? Fact is Hannibal got similar ratings and was renewed. That's the point he is making.
ReplyDeleteAt least it will be getting a good lead in, but I still think it would have worked nicely with Grimm.
ReplyDeleteOdyssey wouldn't work on Sundays at 9pm. There is enough time to air it there since AD is premiering on Easter Sunday. Unless they move it to 10pm once that premieres? Also I am still unconvinced that the apprentice will move to Sundays to finish its run, I think the voice might simply return later than people expect (I really hope it does, for the sake of the show)
ReplyDeleteI think most of us actually know more about ratings and renewal/ cancellation decisions than people in the business. It's not the first time I've felt that.
ReplyDeleteI think the slap will be needed to bridge Sundays until AD airs.
ReplyDeleteDo you know if Hulu views are counted? I mainly do all my tv watching there.
ReplyDeleteWell, initially I thought about Wednesday for Odyssey, but then TMOL got full season, so there are very little timeslots available for the show right now. Besides, with its Homeland-esquee look I thought NBC may have wanted to try it on Sunday to try replicate its success on a larger network extent
ReplyDeleteAfter ep 4 I was ready to drop it, but am very glad I stayed, ep 5 was so much better and I am hoping it gets a season 2.
ReplyDeleteYep, I believe all streaming is counted, Hulu included :)

That or Tuesdays at 8pm, during Voice hiatus.
ReplyDeleteOh please from the classic rock to the classic car, to the lottery vs credit card schemes, to the road trip hotels, to devil's traps and salt lines. There is so much similar in the first few episodes. I'm not getting into a silly argument about brains--because I didn't see anything resembling "brains" or smart writing on Constantine--he wins by hook or by crook or by just sacrificing his "friends" but it all seemed either written to be or dumb luck, there wasn't any preparation or fitting together or puzzle pieces that couldn't have been done by a five year old with a vague knowledge of overused tropes.
ReplyDeleteBuffy was a vampire slayer with her own distinct mythos. SPN's was completely different. That argument is absurd.
There is so much more going on behind Hannibal's renewal as compared to Constantine.
ReplyDeleteIsn't Apprentice shorter this year?
ReplyDeleteI believe The Biggest Loser finishes in January, do we know whats going on after that? Otherwise perhaps they could try Odyssey in that slot.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that's likely. Maybe The Slap at Thursdays at 8? It's supposed to be a mini-series anyways.
ReplyDeleteI think showrunners etc hardly know anything about ratings and such.
ReplyDeleteI think it might get post voice in the spring. We will know more tomorrow after State of Affairs airs its second episode but my guess would be that they burn through State of Affairs during the voice hiatus and then premiere the voice and odissey february the 16th, running them both straight through until the end of the season. Aquarius is also possible but isn't that one limited?
ReplyDeleteAs for Sundays, it is very confusing to guess. What we know is more or less this:
- 04/01: Globes
- 11/01: it's the NFC on CBS so my guess is that NBC airs a movie as filler like they did last year
- 18/01: it's unknown, but I would guess filler. Last year they aired the best of late night with Jimmy Fallon on the first sunday of january (globes were a week later) so maybe they use it here now.
- 25/01: pro bowl
- 01/02: super bowl
- 08/02: no idea but probably has to be filler again since the next week is the oscars and it would be a bad idea to force week two of anything to go up against the oscars
- 15/02: should be filler since the oscars are on at ABC
- 22/02- 29/03: ????? for the whole three hours (6 weeks)
- 05/04 - 17/05: AD will be on this night, presumably for two hours a night as it is widely speculated, which would at last them 6 weeks. They would need something for 17/05 but they can air a special like they did last year (the women of SNL, though that one was low rated, so maybe a different one this time). 7pm I assume is Dateline as usual but there is still an hour missing. Since this period covers 7 weeks, it's probably The Slap here. Maybe that one airs its finale on 17/05 after said special.
So April and May are relatively clear to me as is January and February. But the end of February and the entire month of March is a big unknown to me. 3 hours is a big vacuum to have on the schedule like that and there is only so much Dateline they can air.
NBC may also want to premiere Heroes Reborn "in-season" and then let it run through the summer.
ReplyDeleteI think so, too.
ReplyDeleteThis is copy paste of my response to Pablo before but its the same topic:

But the end of February and the entire month of March is a big unknown to me. 3 hours is a big vacuum to have on the schedule like that and there is only so much Dateline they can air. As far as I know, and assuming the remaining of my schedule is correct, they would only have unscheduled Aquarius and that one is not enough to cover all three hours obviously and there isn't also enough time to air it in such a short period of 6 weeks (unless they double pump it, but still). Then we also have the little issue of what to do with Tuesdays at 9. Marry Me won't keep the slot in the spring but the comedies left (Mr. Robinson and One Big Happy) not only have a very short season order but also seem to be very buzz-less and not the type of show I would expect after the voice (unlike say Mission Control or Kimmy Smith). But I could be wrong about this.
Unless, you know someone who owns a Neilsen box, that doesn't matter.
ReplyDeleteI would love Heroes Reborn Thursdays at 8 but I am not sure it will happen considering the show is still casting.
ReplyDeleteI just meant the first few episodes airing in May (like 24: LAD) and then the rest airing through June and July. But yeah, I think NBC should really get move on and start production on the show, or at least get the cast sorted out. They could promote it really well during Superbowl, like FOX did with 24: LAD
ReplyDeleteYou're the absurd one. Constantine doesn't really have any classic car, there was one piece of rock music in 5 episodes till now and no salt lines so far. Constantine never won with violence so far. He made it by forming plans and conning people. Supernatural is a lot closer to Buffy, because it's all about very young pure hearted studs encountering monster and chopping them into pieces. All neatly wrapped up by the time the next episode ended. Just like SPN. Constantine might have some very broad similiarities with Supernatuaral, but it's all fluff, the core of the series is very different.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you here. If the source material goes back to Hellblazer, which it does, then of course Constantine has to use it - or it's not Constantine. And the music in Constantine is PUNK - not classic rock. The writers of Supernatural have never made it a secret that they used Constantine as an inspiration - as well as Good Omens. I'm a huge fan of Supernatural (at least the Kripke years) but never had a problem with the similarities - in fact, I was looking forward to a different spin on them.
ReplyDeleteI'm rooting so much for this show. With each episode it's getting better.
ReplyDeleteI could see the show getting a second season if the studio is able to cut enough dead weight.
ReplyDeleteThe cast is fairly small already but Harold Perrineau has been a "credit only" character for half of the episodes that already aired. So cutting him would probably save some money.
The character of Zed is not really an improvement over Liv and if I'm being honest serves as a downside to the season, however I think that the show needs a female voice as well so I'd stick with her.
In all honesty...I've seen every episode that aired so far and I don't see many corners to cut. The visuals are impressive but as always: CGI is never too pricey if it's not an effect that forces you to go out of your way to make it happen
The slot they premiered it in is pretty much showing us how little NBC seems to have cared for the show
Probably. I don't have much faith now, especially how everyone is conveniently saying the first season is 13 episodes…no, their production was halted. That's exactly the opposite of having an actual 13-episode first season.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad because I was really loving this show and now it'll go amongst the list of cancelled shows that were phenomenal from day one such as Joe Doe and Almost Human.
I feel like NBC just joined the Comic Book Show parade because they felt they had to, rather then because they wanted too (eg like FOX).
ReplyDeleteThe cuts I think they would have to make are more behind the scenes stuff.
About a month ago they wanted a fully trained SWAT Team for example... I assume that wouldn't have been cheap.
true, still Constantine turned out to be a rather decent show, so it'd be sad to see it go.
ReplyDeleteWell, they're shooting in Atlanta, so there might be some hope afterall. Locations there are cheap and dozens of young start-up actors are there, so they can probably cut back on big guest stars and bring in cheaper actors.
Why for f**ks sake would they want a SWAT team? o.O
Whoever made that decision needs to be step 1 of the cut-backs, they totally could....and SHOULD have hired extras).
I don't even like starting shows now unless they have been on for 5 years it seems, I am so tired of giving 2 years up of my life to have a show canceled with me wondering what half the story lines where an never answered. Like the Gates or Tru Calling
ReplyDeleteI think the decision is a bad omen indeed..
ReplyDeleteSeems like Constantine would be a better fit in SyFy (or Netflix etc) to me for some reason. I don't think it will ever pull the numbers NBC wants or needs, but it may be able to find a devoted audience on a different network with smaller expectations. Smaller network could mean smaller production values though and I think it would need to keep the same level of VFX and production to viable anywhere.
In other words...Constantine most likely is not long for this mortal coil.
And cancelled.
ReplyDeleteThere has not been anything remotely close to me watching on nbc besides Grimm and even that I'm taking a break on because of the writers. I just stopped watching this because I forgot about it. idk I guess nbc is just not my network.
ReplyDeleteI was pleased to see Jim Corrigan/The Spectre. I hope that as it continues, they add other appropriate Vertigo characters like the Phantom Stranger, Doctor Occult and Rose Psychic, or even Swamp Thing.
ReplyDeleteI know they said they'd run 13 episodes with the possibility it would be back for season two, this is scary I don't trust NBC's ideals of letting good shows catch on, I mean what are ya gonna do, it's better than Dracula, I actually like it better than Hannibal, I know Hannibal has it's fans but, Constantine is a damn good show, and know the network wants to mess with it, everytime I get invested in a show on NBC, Constantine is perfect with Grimm!!!
ReplyDelete"slating Constantine cast members to appear on the network’s broadcast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade next week."
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry did we suddenly push Thanksgiving to next week and the world is waiting this Thursday to surprise us lol.
It's really sad that with the year ending the networks still count on a outdated system and are chickens to drop this system and focus on the real ratings which is DVR and online.
ReplyDeleteNow an days ppl dnt have the luxury to watch tv as much with many not having jobs and not able to keep their cable service or satellite.
13 Episodes are good, but I realy want a Second Season.
ReplyDeleteHow about you refrain from petty insults?
ReplyDelete1. They used a salt line along the door in the pilot.
2. Constantine from what I've seen is your pretty standard heaven-hell demon mythos. Which is not SPN, because they at least tried something new.
3. Buffy was about a teenage girl with a mythical calling and mythical powers who fought vampires. She was aided in this quest by her friends and mentor. Most of the Buffy mythos dealt with monsters from other dimensions. She stayed in Sunnydale. And she mainly staked them. SPN was about normal human adult brothers who were raised to seek out and hunt monsters all around the US. It was a road trip show, it was a detective show. Monsters have foundations in Urban Legends and other stories, with heaven and hell mythos coming later. Both started off procedural--AS IS CONSTANTINE! Saying SPN is derivative of Buffy because they were WB shows with pretty people is like saying Constantine is derivative of Arrow because they are comic book shows with curmudgeonly leads.
I'm saying the mythos and tone of Constantine was too similar to SPN and where it diverged it did so to it's detriment. This is one reason I stopped watching. And IMO it is one reason it is going to be cancelled.
this is what id want to happen as well. let CW continue it and link it with Arrow/Flash universe. instead of having it flounder in the hands of NBC
ReplyDeleteIts cause of the ad money. If you watch online then the network makes no money and then they can't pay for the shows production....hence the emphasis on Nielson.
ReplyDeleteHuh....CGI is super pricey....sometimes more so then the talent....depends on which company and where it is being done.....
ReplyDeleteI hate to say it....but I think viewers find it hard to connect with the show, the main characters and the overall story.....I watch week after week and I still feel disconnected from the events happening on the screen with the show. I also feel that the actor who plays John....is just not the right fit for the character.....despite his acting chops.....hopefully the network will give the show an opportunity to retool before making the decision to fully cancel.
ReplyDeleteframe by frame? We're not living in the 80s anymore where we have to slowly movie live action models :P
ReplyDeleteThese days we have motion cycles for 3D rendering, we have CG explosions, CG fire (pretty much every kind of element you could wish for), motion tracking, fume and various other tools.
now, I do know that there were some pretty damn hard to achieve visuals in Constantine (the confrontation on the top of a building in the pilot, the earth elementals in episode 2, the train dissolving) but they could do without them.
For Constantine I think hidden costs matter more, find cheaper locations, cheaper actors and settle for the second of third best instead of the best
I have to admit, I don't really care enough about the show...for all the reasons stated below....to even discourse on it any longer....seems like you are in a mood to argue....
ReplyDeleteAs stated the show has issues....CGI is not one of them.
