Constantine - The Devil's Vinyl - Review

Nov 10, 2014

I have to admit it: this week episode The Devil's Vinyl of Constantine was an improvement from the previous one. The story was at least entertaining, we had some good plot twists, but we are far from what I expected from Constantine before it aired.

The case of the week was about a devilish vynil that kills everyone listens to it. After one of the protagonist's friends mysteriously dies, Constantine and Zed start to investigate about his death with the help of a new interesting character: Chase.
They make a (cool) spell in order to let Barnie resurrect and talk, and the hints bring them to a former rock star named Ian Fell . They discover that his wife is the one to blame: she sold her soul in order to save her husband from cancer, and now she is working with a shady warlock  to get her it back. After some troubles, they end up freeing her soul and preventing Papa Midnight to have the vynil. I really liked the presence of the Angel of Death and the references to the soul and Devil's interest for it.

I appreciated the arrival of this new villain, Papa Midnight who is a solid character at least. I am hoping they will show him again, he has the right charm.Zed and Chase are confirmed to be two interesting characters and helpers of John.

In conclusion, watching this week's episode didn’t get me bored, instead I was definitely entertained. What it is still missing is an interesting long-term storyline: we don’t need another Supernatural or Grimm.
The writers have so much stuff from the comics that they could create such an interesting and original new series, but they just follow the usual scheme of the supernatural procedural with strong characters but no solid storylines in it. I just hope for Constantine’s sake, they have bigger plans for the following episodes, or it will likely end up going to the TV's Hell without turning back.

Next week episode is called A Feast of Friends and will air this Friday on NBC at 10/9 c.
What do you think about the episode?

    2. I agree with you when you say that the writers have so much stuff from the comics to make this an interesting show, but even tough it's only the beginning, they did a terrible follow up with the second episode. It was all over the place and I think that Liv could be a great character if they had the time and the ways to develop her. I love Zed, but so far the characters are boring and the cases are boring. Really hope they step up their game because Hellblazer is a "hell" of a good story.
