Chicago PD - Assignment Of The Year - Review
Nov 22, 2014
Chicago PD MR ReviewsWell, I think all hopes of Antonio and Laura getting back together are gone. I sincerely hope they find some way to pull through, but something tells me they are looking to free up Antonio (I’m looking at you, Nadia).
Asher and Layla start arguing, and once again, Layla comes on to Antonio. Asher leaves with Antonio, and the two stop at a gas station so Antonio can get Asher cigarettes. When Antonio returns to the car, Asher’s got a bullet hole…in his head. And as expected, the diamonds he was carrying are gone.
Antonio’s FOP rep tells him and Voight that because Asher was a wanted criminal (unbeknownst to Antonio), Antonio could lose his job because of his affiliation with him. They’ve got two days to close the case. If they don’t, Antonio’s could lose his job and pension. I’d be willing to bet he doesn’t lose either…
Right away, Voight tells Olinsky to “draw up some paperwork for Antonio.” When Ruzek questions Olinsky later, O says, “There are ways…to rewrite history.” Is it just me or could Olinsky totally pass for a mob boss?
When Ruzek finds out that Asher and his wife frequent a sex club, he turns into a middle school boy, and it’s hilarious.
“What…what was it like inside?”
“Don’t tell him, man. He’ll be useless to us the rest of the day,” says Halstead.
Roman didn’t know Asher was a felon, and his immaturity shows in his inexperience. The guy even interrupts Voight – several times – during a single conversation. I thought Voight’s eyes might pop out of his head! Roman was heavily involved with the unit on this case, and it seems that he’s got a more questionable past than I initially suspected. I liked seeing him work with Intelligence, and would be perfectly happy if he and Atwater traded places.
Antonio questions Layla and let’s just say she had a special relationship with her husband (and many other men…). She’s clearly hiding something, but she does it behind a calm, cool, flirtatious exterior, almost as if she wants Antonio to keep looking into the issue.
No one will give the team a warrant for information about the sex club and its patrons, so the team decides an undercover op is the way to figure out who Layla was conspiring with.
“Any volunteers?” asks Voight. Naturally, the hands of Halstead, Ruzek, and Roman shoot up. “It’s gotta be a couple,” Voight starts, “Halstead and Lindsay.” Yes! See, even Voight knows they’re great together. Now he just needs to get rid of that pesky fraternization rule of his and we’re good to go!
Ruzek is hilarious, and it’s a trait of his that has seriously been underused. Remember when he posed on the stack of money last season for his “rap album”? I want more of that Ruzek!
Halstead says to Lindsay, “Look, whatever we gotta do to come across convincingly in there, I’m prepared.” I bet you are, Halstead. I bet you are. All that confidence seemed to fade away, as Halstead’s clearly uncomfortable inside. “This is a sex club. People have sex in there.” And “You see that? You see what was happening there?”
When the team discovers that Asher’s will leaves Layla nothing, their convinced she hired someone to rob and kill Asher. Terry, Layla’s errand boy, was set up. Layla made Terry she believed she loved him, and then had him kill Asher and steal the diamonds. Of course, Layla’s no idiot. She switches the real diamonds with cubic zirconia and gets away clean, while Terry takes the fall for the murder.
When Layla shows up to meet Antonio, she’s clearly smug about getting away with murder. I don’t see Antonio dropping the case, and I bet we haven’t seen the last of Layla.
The lawyer offering Lindsay her own task force shows up yet again. Erin hasn’t made a decision yet, and now there’s a clock on the offer. Considering the lawyer gave her about a week and PD is on hiatus for three weeks, I’d say we see Erin’s decision in the next episode.
Remember that “paperwork” Olinsky was working on for Antonio? It’s a nine-month file detailing Antonio’s undercover work for Asher. This of course saves Antonio’s job, and proves that this unit is a family, and blood runs deep.
I’ve said it before, this show is very well-written. It has a great cast and compelling characters. The problem with a bigger cast is that it takes us longer to get to know them, and not everyone gets a shining moment in every episode. If tonight’s episode proved anything, it’s that the world could use a little more Ruzek. Or a lot more.
What did you think of the episode? Will Erin accept the new job offer? Which character do you want to shine more?

Thanks for the review. Voight and O creating the undercover file Antonio was my favorite part. It showed the bond of the intelligence unit and that there is are reason why the older ones are calling the shots. But I remember that Voight let Halstead hanging when he got suspended, and I wasn't ok with that in that episode. Olinsky stepped in then as well, that is why I like him a lot.
ReplyDeleteRoman is growing on me, maybe he and Atwater can switch? But I like him standing up to Voight, saying he wants to be in uniform. Small scene with Erin and Jay was nice, but not enough, in this regard I really miss season 1, to me they were closer there. You were pointing out that there is not enough time for everything/everyone in an episode due to the big cast, but I still hope we get to see more of Linstead. I think she should take the job offer, the way it is right now, it is getting us nowhere with Lindstead....
As much I like seeing the other castmembers shine, how come (this goes for every show) when some characters get a moment to shine, the episode "needed more of everyone else" but when the most popular characters get their moment, it's always about them and them only?
ReplyDeleteAnyways, I'm glad antonio got his episode. He hadn't had one since his son got kidnapped. Jon was great and his fight scene was awesome! The ending was wonderful and seeing antonio tear up with gratitude was emotional.
9/10.
With you on the more Ruzek......pleeeeeease x x
ReplyDeleteI like how Voight & Olinsky stepped up to protect Antonio's badge. I loved the conversation between Olinsky & Antonio. That was one of my favorite scenes this episode. It shows that the unit is starting to form as a family amongst them. Voight & Antonio has history & we can see that its completely behind them and they have each others backs.
ReplyDeleteIdky but I was never feeling Antonio's wife. I can take a single Antonio & I do see a pairing in his future with Nadia. I see this case remaining open & Antonio going after the wife in the future.
Also, the fight scene was the best one for me. Antonio boxed him & it was awesome!!!! "Now cuff him" Antonio's rage is well played by John.
Linstead I always like seeing them even if it was a little bit. Halstead is turning into a baby Dawson with his intolerance of bs'g.
It's hard to say which character I'd like to shine more in this show. I like them all. I'd like to see Linstead together & well written for them as both partners & lovers. I wouldn't mind some more Ruzek centered story. He's bringing a lot more humor this season. I don't think Erin will take the job. Love the episode & the review.
I watched the episode when Halstead was suspended & Bought left him out there. I do feel that was messed up. Antonio nearly beat the crap out of him before giving him the file. It seem like they felt like he was guilty. Olinsky showing up to his door is what did it for me. Alvin was in my likeable characters at that point.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great point, they really did leave Halstead hanging out to dry. But, Voight knows Antonio a lot better than he does Halstead. And to be fair, Antonio was not a suspect in a murder case.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Atwater and Roman switching.
I think Lindsay will take the job, because it will allow her to explore a relationship with Jay. Here's hoping!
I don't think it's that we need everyone to shine every week, but I'm reminded when I don't see much of a character how great they are, if that makes sense. I love Antonio, and it was great to see him get another feature episode.
ReplyDeleteYes!! And Halstead.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. This unit is a family for sure.
I do see a future with Antonio and Nadia, definitely not Layla. She got away with murder, and he's not happy about it.
It's tough to pick one character to shine, because they are all so great! I hope they continue to "rotate" through who gets the feature. Next episode seems to be Olinsky.
I think if Erin does take the job, it won't be long before she's back in Intelligence.
I like to think that if the same thing would happen to Jay again, this time they would help him, because all of them have been growing together more as unit now than in season 1.
ReplyDeleteI think Erin will take the job, too. Otherwise why introducing this storyline at all?
I hope the writers don't forget the show is called CHICAGO PD not Erin Lindsay and the Task Force and don't forget about the other characters. Too many shows blow off characters just to make one character look all superior and more important.
ReplyDeleteTrue, but NBC put Voight, Antonio and Erin on the cover of the Chicago PD Promo channel on youtube for example, so that looks to me that NBC has made a choice who the leading characters are on Chicago PD. It is like this, it is a business after all, so whoever sells best gets more attention. Chicago PD has been so far quite balanced unlike many others imo.
ReplyDeleteI watched the episode where Jay has the hit on him & I realized something. He said he has no beneficiaries. I wonder what all that entails. So I really would like to see him shine with some back story into his family.
ReplyDeleteWhy do we have to wait 3 weeks to see an episode so we can wait another 3 weeks to see tr next one ? ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
