Chicago Fire - Chopper - Review
Nov 20, 2014
Chicago Fire MR ReviewsAt the top of the episode, Boden and Donna have a bit of a baby scare. Donna has placenta previa, which means she’s at high risk for hemorrhaging during her third trimester. Yikes! I don’t think the writers would have Donna lose the baby, and I hope I’m right. I don’t think I could handle seeing Boden deal with that.
During a later appointment, Donna tells Boden that it’s a boy! Contrary to what it may seem, I’m really not a big crier. This show continually tries to make me one. In this scene? It succeeded.
Severide and Crazy Brittany (I feel that she earned that name this week, no?) are going strong and I hate it. Hate it! I’ve officially decided I don’t like her. There’s something clearly there that we (and the rest of the house) don’t know.
Meanwhile, Casey and Gabby sitting there, waiting for Severide, hearing everything, was hilarious. “You made this bed. You can change the sheets.” Gabby has some good lines.
The majority of the episode deals with a helicopter crashing into an apartment complex. It was a nice break from the traditional routine of the show; this week we saw almost solely this call, seeing the house in action for almost the entire show.
On the drive to the scene, Severide sees he’s already got three texts, all increasing in worry, from Crazy Brittany. Was that regret I saw on his face…?
Sylvie and Peter talk on the ride over, and Peter implies that he had a house relationship go awry. We of course all know it was Dawson, but Sylvie doesn’t know. I like the friendship these two are building, I’m looking forward to seeing that continue.
On the roof, Squad 3 works to stabilize the chopper and get the three passengers inside, out. There is a definite imbalance on this show. We know the members of Truck 81 very well, but not the members of Squad. I stand by what I said a few weeks ago, get rid of the nobodies on Squad, make Newhouse a regular, and bring back Clark! Man, I miss Clark.
While Squad 3 works on the roof, Truck 81 works in the building evacuating the tenants. When all of Truck 81 comes out of the building with the exception of Dawson, Casey starts to panic. A woman stumbles out of the building wearing Dawson’s mask, and says that Dawson fell inside. When Dawson eventually stumbles out, Casey yells at her, telling her to never give up her mask. Dawson’s recklessness, Casey’s inability to handle being her boss, and Dawson’s lingering feelings for the paramedic life leave me to believe that her firefighting days are numbered.
We’ve talked a lot recently about how boring Casey has become. He really shined in this episode, and it better continue. He’s a great lieutenant and darn good firefighter. He works so well under pressure, and it’s because of his determination that the boy made it out alive.
Sylvie and Mills triage the scene, and I’m impressed with how much Sylvie has grown during her short time in Chicago. The two find a van that has been hit by a piece of the falling chopper and an unconscious man inside. While Mills goes to help Dawson with another victim, Sylvie finds herself dealing with, in all likelihood, a criminal. He’s got multiple passports, tons of cash, and a gun. Again, I was so impressed with her! She makes it out alive and he later tails her (which was creepy) only to give her his business card. Great! Sylvie’s got a criminal in her corner. Who couldn’t use one of those?
Dawson follows a trail of blood and traces it to a boy who’s seriously injured. He’s holding the remote control for the smaller helicopter that caused the chopper crash. We got a taste of what it would be like if Dawson and Mills were paramedics together, and I absolutely loved it. I forgot how awesome she is at that job, and I hope we haven’t seen the last of her in that role.
“Hey, good work,” Mills says to Dawson.
“Dawson and Mills. Just like old times, huh?”
“Just like old times,” he replies...with a thoughtful, longing look on his face.
Is it just me, or is Mills totally crushing on Dawson again? Talk about unexpected! Back when Mills and Dawson were together, all I wanted was for them to break up so she could be with Casey. Now, I don’t know! Don’t get me wrong, I love Dawson and Casey together and they are absolutely the “it” couple of the show. But I can’t deny that small part of me that wouldn’t mind seeing Mills and Dawson together again…
Crazy Brittany shows up on scene, frantically asking Boden for updates. He’s clearly annoyed, and I have to say, the feeling is mutual. She stays there the entire time, and I wish it was possible to slap someone through a TV. As they are wrapping up the scene, someone tells Severide that his wife was there asking about him. When Severide checks his phone, he sees he has 37 unread messages. Crazy, crazy, crazy! She has got to go. Now.
Herrmann and Otis check the surrounding area and come across the unluckiest of women. She was hit by a fairly large piece of the chopper and found herself pinned beneath it. Throughout this call, Herrmann once again proves that he deserves a lieutenant position. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like Otis has been much more prominent this season on calls. He’s a great firefighter, something I hadn’t really noticed before.
After the call, Casey sees Cruz and Sylvie together, and confronts her about it, thinking she’s in a secret relationship with Cruz. She insists that she’s not seeing Cruz, and tells Casey the Zumba secret to prove it. Even though they all say, “This goes no further…” news of Cruz’s Zumba class spreads like wildfire (pun intended). Before long, everyone knows, and I couldn’t be happier. This is hilarious!
And finally, in what was quite possibly the best scene this show has ever had, Cruz warms up for Zumba class. Yes! I love this class. To his shock, he turns around to see all of 51 there, ready to get their Zumba on. Words cannot even express how much I loved this scene. I could watch it on replay for hours and hours. I sincerely hope we haven’t seen the last of Cruz and his Zumba class.
What did you think of the episode? Would you like to see Dawson and Mills together again? How long will Crazy Brittany be in town?

Another great review Meghan, I thought this episode was probably the best of the season, mainly because most of the episode was spent doing what the show does best - real life rescues.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the Cruz Zumba scene at the end, it was just so funny! As you say, I could watch that over and over again and never get bored.
I'm not sure I like the idea of Mills and Dawson, I din't like them together before and I'm still not a fan. I personally wouldn't mind the idea of Mills and Brett?
I liked this episode. The Zumba scenes were priceless. I'm torn on Dawson and Mills. I love their friendship, and I hope the writers are bringing that back. I didn't really like them as a couple, but Mills has grown so much since then so maybe it could work? I don't know. What I do know is that I'm really enjoying Mills and Brett's partnership. They're cute.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review, Meghan.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one who felt like slapping her. That woman is totally neurotic.
That Zumba class was hilarious. lol
I'm liking Sylvie more and more every week. I had a heart stopping moment when that guy was tailing her too. I was so relieved to see that card. You're right. That could be a good thing. Bet we see her use it later in the season.
I loved the Zumba scene and agree it was one of Chicago fires best. I like mills and Dawson as friends and partners... I look forward to that but I prefer her with Casey. I am hoping that casey and Dawson take the back burner though and become the stable but not talked about couple so others can take the focus.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I think it was my favorite of the season, definitely because we got to see them do their jobs (and the Zumba, of course).
ReplyDeleteUltimately, I do want Dawson and Casey together. But I have to admit, I do miss Dawson and Mills just a little!
I would rather Sylvie and Severide...once Crazy Brittany is out of the picture!
That's my thing too! Mills has grown so much and I might like seeing them together. I do want Dawson with Casey in the end, but I at least want Mills and Dawson to be paramedics together.
ReplyDeleteShe's the worst!
ReplyDeleteBut Zumba made everything better. I bet she does use it this season. The writers definitely didn't go to all that trouble for nothing. Maybe she'll use it to "get rid" of Brittany? Too harsh?
I could settle for Mills and Dawson as paramedic partners. It's definitely going to be Dawson and Casey in the end!
ReplyDeleteHa! No I am definitely more for Halstead on PD. Severide's a good guy, and it's frustrating to see him with horrible people. Shay would not be happy with him!
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I don't want to see Dawson & Mills. I'm a fan of Casey & Dawson. I enjoyed the Zumba classes the last couple episodes. This episode was one of the best episodes this season. I'm glad to see Severide not stumbling around lost and drinking when not in action. I'm not feeling Brittany but if it keeps him from dating Erin, I'll tolerate Brittany. Not sure how long she'll be around. I thought at one time he'd end up with Sylvie. Herman has really impressed me this season. He does deserve the LT position but I don't want to see him go to a new house...
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'd like to see Dawson and Mills as paramedics together. In the end, I think I've got to go for Casey and Dawson.
ReplyDeleteI think it's safe to say Severide and Erin are done. I do think Severide and Sylvie will be something the writers explore down the line, they've got great chemistry together.
I've been wondering how this whole Herrmann thing will work out. He's been featured more prominently this season which makes me think it's leading up to something. I can't see him leaving, he's such a vital part of the show. But I also don't see him passing up a lieutenant position either. I don't know!
I don't know when I started rolling my eyes through Severide scenes but they need to fix that. He's been OTT since Shay and they have carried that too long. Brittany, or whatever her name is, is just another symptom of his issues. Cut her loose and give me Severide back. I need a stronger Severide and Casey friendship.
ReplyDeleteYES!! I really thought that with Shay's death we would see more Casey and Severide. I'm still hoping!
