Chicago Fire - Arrest In Transit - Review
Nov 28, 2014
Chicago Fire MR ReviewsWe’re one episode away from the fall finale, and it seems we will have plenty of story to cover before we get there. Of course, I expect loose ends to leave us hanging until the new year.
Dawson and Casey are struggling, it’s as simple as that. They are trying to make the lieutenant/candidate thing work and it’s just not. On their first call, the team deals with a chemical spill. When Dawson breaks protocol to create a perimeter, another chief happens to pull up on the scene and sees the whole thing. Whoops. Casey’s ticked, especially when Boden tells him he’s got to get it under control.
When Casey talks to Dawson, he raises a very good point. Dawson continually breaks protocol, which might have been more acceptable as the PIC. As a candidate? Nope. He has every right to be mad and honestly, I’m frustrated watching it. If Dawson were anyone but Dawson, she would have been kicked off Truck long ago. It’s time she either learn how to follow protocol and be a firefighter or give it up.
“Following orders is not up for debate…If it happens again, I’ll be forced to kick you off Truck.”
Something tells me this is going to cause even more issues between the two…
Remember when I said a few weeks ago that Mills was totally crushing on Dawson again? Well, I stand by it. He finds Dawson sitting in the shower (fully clothed, don’t worry) crying, and it’s clear he’s just dying to help her.
Casey and Dawson’s home life certainly isn’t improving either. On their second call, a desperate husband goes crazy trying to get his wife out of a burning building. When she’s found, he jumps off the stretcher and runs to her. When Mills calls him crazy, Herrmann says, “That’s marriage.” Dawson and Casey look at each other and it’s clear they are not feeling it.
Dawson stays late at Molly’s to close, and Mills is reluctant to leave because of his new mafia situation. They clean up together and then have a beer. He asks her how she’s doing, knowing that she’s struggling. Dawson tells him that things between her and Casey aren’t great, even admitting that their home life is on the rocks. He puts his hand on hers and I’m sitting there going, “No, no, no, NO!” because of course, Casey walks in and sees everything.
Meanwhile, Severide and Crazy Brittany go on a run together, and she avoids a call from her mom. When Severide suggests they go see her family for Thanksgiving, she says no. Seriously, what is her deal?! This girl cannot stand to be apart from Severide. Crazy Brittany, his shift is 24 long. Surely you can find something better to do than hang around the firehouse.
Crazy Brittany asks to see a picture of Shay and asks Severide why he never talks about her. “You never talk about Kathleen. I kind of thought that was the deal,” he says. Now we’re getting somewhere!
When Severide takes Crazy Brittany to a museum about the Chicago Fire and the history of the department, she breaks down and tells him that she was driving the car when her sister was killed. She walked away from the accident with a few stitches, but her sister didn’t make it.
Severide finally comes to his senses and tells Brittany that drinking and partying was his escape when Shay died. He realizes that he is Brittany’s escape, and that she needs to face her family. In a weird, twisted way, this marriage did help Severide progress in dealing with Shay’s death. My biggest complaint for this season is the lack of Severide/Casey scenes. Seriously, where are they?
As always, there were a few great subplots this week:
Cruz is crushing on Sylvie! She panics just a bit when he asks her out, saying she thinks they make better friends. Ouch.
Mills and Sylvie are on the scene for a high school student, Jason, who drowned in a school pool. He’s revived on scene, but taken to the hospital just in case. All seems to be fine but on the way to the hospital, Jason crashes and is pronounced dead at the hospital. Of course, Jason’s dad turns out to basically be the head of the Chicago mafia. He points out that his son was alive when he went into the ambulance and blames Mills for his son’s death. Perfect. The dad shows up at the firehouse after shift and tells Mills, “You’re dead.” I’m sure he’ll be fine, I don’t know that we could handle the death of two main characters in half of a season. That’s not a challenge, Fire writers!
Now I know the goal of the big Fire/PD/SVU crossover was to involve all three, which meant a case that spread across both Chicago and New York. This episode of Fire, however, would have been a great intro into a crossover with PD. Detective Halstead of Chicago PD shows up for all of thirty seconds, and I feel like this mafia deal could have been so much bigger and better than it was. I hope it’s something that spans a few episodes, but I don’t believe any other major crossovers are in the works for the near future.
After the call, both Sylvie and Mills are understandably down, and Cruz offers to make wings with Sylvie. It was surprisingly sweet! She accepts his date proposal at the end of the episode and I have to say, I’m not sure how I feel about it. Cruz is sweet, but I just don’t see a spark between these two. With Crazy Brittany now out of the picture (Woo hoo!), I think it’s only a matter of time before the sparks resume between Sylvie and Severide. I’m not saying they will jump into a relationship, but I think we’ll see that connection we saw earlier in the season again.
Mouch accidentally gets a date with an Ophthalmologist. “I owe you a steak dinner!” Mouch says when the doctor officially clears him for duty. Picturing Platt’s reaction is absolutely perfect. Oh Mouch, good luck. “Trudy will rip my head clean off if she finds out!” Yes she will, Mouch. Yes she will.
I love the scenes with Mouch, Herrmann, and Boden. It’s easy to forget that they are all around the same age, and have probably been working together for many years. I still think that Herrmann’s prominence this season (more than usual) is a sign of things to come, lieutenant wise.
When Mouch shows up to the restaurant to wait for his accidental date, he’s surprised to see Platt walk in. Of course she found out, called the doctor’s office, and told her it was a misunderstanding. Mouch apologizes profusely, to which Platt says, “You are buying me a very big porterhouse steak tonight.” I just love these two.
What did you think of the episode? How long will Cruz and Sylvie last? Will Casey and Dawson break up?

I hope Casey and Dawson don't break up, and frankly, I don't think they will. I do agree with the potential for a crossover this week, was overlooked, it could have been perfect!! Great review; I sure hope Dawson learns to follow orders soon, for her sake...

I don't want them to break up, but Dawson was never good at following orders, she has that stubborn streak which makes her interesting. I think they (the writers -I mean ) should not have brought Mills into it, he was finally in a good place without Dawson. This is a thing between Casey and Dawson.
ReplyDeleteI agree and disagree with that. I LOVE Dawsey, but have always missed Millson just a little, and have been hoping for a few scenes with just them for a while. I do think Mills should suck it up and help her, since clearly she needed it. But the putting his hand on hers thing might have been crossing the line, since Gabby didn't pull away... You see what I'm saying? I think it would be cool to see them both back on ambo for a few eps, if this firefighting thing falls through for Dawson, which I really hope it doesn't. Unless she keeps defying Casey, then it better fall through, because then her life will become a living hell!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteI don't want Casey and Dawson to break up either, but something's got to happen. This show is only in its third season and it's going strong, I don't see them together without any breakups for the duration of the show. Are they the endgame? Yes.
I love Casey and Dawson too, but I do miss Mills. I would love to see them back on ambo together!
ReplyDeleteI thought Cruz and Brett was kind of random. I thought they were leading toward pairing her with either Mills or Severide. I don't want her with Severide so I'm willing to give it a chance.
ReplyDeleteThe more I think about it, the more I don't want Mills and Dawson to get back together. I want them as friends! I know something has to happen with Dawson and Casey because this just isn't working, but if Dawson and Mills date, then they'll break up again and lose their friendship all over again. Mills doesn't need anymore heartbreak this season.
I agree. And she always seems to be in the thick of things. When Mills was a probie he spent most of the time waiting by for truck for them to give him something to do, and it was usually a menial task. He only went in right away when they needed everyone. Dawson, on the other hand, seems to go in first all the time, and usually with Casey. She should never be a first responder on the team. She's only be on squad a few weeks. (I'm getting a little tired of her taking over. We seldom see the other guys in action at all now.)
ReplyDeleteCruz is such a sweetie. I'm glad Sylvie is at least giving him a chance even though i don't think any of them should be dating workmates.
Not permanently though, I really would love to see Mills back on Squad at some point... Maybe Severide can help him like ReneƩ helped him, you know, with his shoulder?
ReplyDeleteThis is starting to remind me of Grey's Anatomy... *Spoiler Alert if you aren't up to date* you know with Meredith and Derek... I would love to see a few more Millson scenes in the Ambo, "just like old times" you know? Nothing romantic through!!
ReplyDeleteSad about Casey and Dawson, especially with him walking in on her and Mills. And Casey was completely in the right to be angry at Dawson. I just wish they wouldn't separate those too. I didn't like Mills and Dawson at all. It just seemed like she was dating her little brother.
ReplyDeleteI think the idea of Brett and Cruz is kind of cute especially since his crush developed from their friendship. I don't get why it's so random. i saw zero spark between Brett and Severide and I'm really hope they don't explore that avenue. It just felt forced. I'm wondering why the writers are so desperate to pair this new female character off with someone. First there was that episode on Chicago PD, where she seemed really interested in Halstead. Then there was the Severide exchange, followed by the budding Mills friendship and now Cruz. If I had to pick, I'd go wtih Cruz I supposed
I think Brett and Cruz have Chemistry so I hope it works out. And well I just don't her anywhere near Halstead because I saw no chemistry between them and I am not a fan of the crossover romances.
ReplyDeleteI guess it's over between Casey and Dawson and that's not for what
ReplyDeletehappened at the bar. When you stay in the living room next to your
fiance listening to your roommate how happy he is .... and realizing you
are not happy at all... that's not good. I knew this relationship will
be tough but hoped for the best. This relationship is not working. To
put the marriage on hold for pour carrier It was a tough decision. I see
no future for them, unfortunately.
I really hope Dawson and Casey work this out. It's one thing if they break up because of fighting, but I think it would be a bad storyline if Peter Mills comes between them.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they will either. I think Mills and Dawson work as friends but I did not like their romantic relationship. I think Casey was right to be mad at her and grew more frustrated with her wanting a pat on the back for breaking orders.
ReplyDeleteI agree about Brett. Severide and her is a no for me because they have implied she reminded him of Shay a couple times and I don't think that's a good way to go at all. If they pair her up with anyone (let's face it, they will) it should be Mills. He is the only one that has the best chemistry with her but I think it should wait until next season.
ReplyDeleteWith Casey and Dawson I was hoping they would just keep them together. Sure there would be bumps but make them the strong couple on the show that can work things out. Maybe that is what this is..... Fingers crossed. I don't want Mills and Dawson take two because it is not fair to him and she and Casey are clearly end game!
Full disclosure, I don't like Dawson and I never have so I am totally ok if she and Casey don't make it.
ReplyDeleteI'd much rather have Severide/Casey scenes than any scene with Dawson/Casey or Britt. I do wish we could see Boden's wife more. I love Mills again so I really hate he is crushing on Dawson again. This show needs fresh female blood that isn't as abrasive and indecisive as Dawson. Someone who is tough without a chip on her shoulder.
I agree with you 100% on how Casey was right not to commend her for her actions. Yes, she saved the day with some fast thinking, but she broke orders to do it. If I were her, I would have asked him first, simply because he is the lieutenant, and being lieutenant isn't something you can do overnight, you have to work for it. Just the fact that she was expecting a 'reward' so to speak at home, was very annoying for lack of a better term. She broke orders, and when you do that, you don't get rewarded. Casey, should work on not shutting her down so much at home when she wants to talk. They need to work this out, and so long as he keeps shutting down her attempts to talk things out, I feel Dawsey is in grave danger.
ReplyDeleteOn to Mills, I really do miss them together, I loved them, until the breakup, just the way he handled it was a major turnoff for me. I feel like he is a good friend for her to have, but Dawson just needs to tread lightly because she is, after all engaged to Casey, not Mills. I feel like Casey is just pissed, she'd have to work alot harder to 'rekindle her old flame' with him, if they had kissed at Molly's, I'd be 1000x more worried.
I didn't like their romantic relationship at the time, but Mills has also grown a lot. I'm still for Casey and Dawson, but I can't deny the chemistry that's still there between Dawson and Mills.
ReplyDeleteI want her with Severide! Eventually, not right now. The Cruz pairing was random, but I don't hate it. Mainly because I don't think it will last long.
ReplyDeleteI honestly can't decide what I want for Dawson/Casey/Mills issue. Obviously, Casey and Dawson are the endgame. But this show is doing really well and I just don't see them together for the duration, there's going to be bumps and maybe breakups along the way.
Yes! To Halstead and Lindsay. I don't see the chemistry between Brett and Cruz...just platonic.
ReplyDeleteYeah, there is for sure some chemistry! I also agree that Mills has grown A LOT since his candidate days, maybe his rescue squad stint is to blame for that? How do you feel about the Mills switch over to medic? I really want to see him back on Squad, or maybe even a one-time stint back on squad, you know? Maybe where he has to jump in during a desperate situation, you have to admit, that would be pretty dang cool! xD
ReplyDeleteLol I just don't want her anywhere near Halstead. so they can put Brett with Mills, Cruz or Severide or some other guy character on fire
