I stopped watching after Season 3, but my biggest beefs with the show were the never-ending Triangle of Doom, the fact that Elena had a become a detestable main character, the very blatant misogyny of having female characters' lives revolve around the mass-murderer and rapist boyfriends who have hurt their family and friends because OMG HE'S SUCH A DREAMY BAD BOY, the endless plot holes and retcons, and the god-awful Klaus although he's off in his own show since Season 5.
ReplyDeleteI stopped watching at the end of season 4. I couldn't take the love triangle anymore. I also couldn't watch any more of Elena whining constantly.
ReplyDeleteThings I dislike about this poll:
ReplyDeleteOnly two possible choices.
One thing I hate is the supposed adults complete lack of common sense when dealing with teenagers. For example, at the end of the last episode Elena asks Alaric to erase all her memories of Damon.
ReplyDeleteWhat Alaric should do: Compel her to stop taking drugs, get her act together, and grieve like every other person who can't compel their problems away.
What he will do: Erase all the memories of Damon, who is inevitably going to come back, and create a whole set of new problems, when he gets back in the scene.
Do u even have to ask? It is the tiring and annoyingly boring love triangle...and the other side is a close second...The show hasnt changed much since season 2...Same old boring and under used cast
ReplyDeleteThe love triangle... Damn it sucks!
ReplyDeleteI never had a problem with the love triangle until Plec decided to "please everyone" instead of doing a progressive and coherent transition from Stefan/Elena to Damon/Elena. Both ships now look awful and weak. Don't even get me started on the stupid sire storyline and or the "doppelgangers destined to be together" bs.
ReplyDeleteThe obvious favoritism of certain characters since Kevin Williamson left. I hate how some characters in this show never face the consequences of their actions while others have to suffer A LOT. Elena and Jeremy got away with killing Kol (Klaus brother) and Klaus did NOTHING while Klaus killed Tyler's mother because he freed his hybrids. Also I hate how some people support this bad writing because of their ship preferences.
Also how some characters barely get screentime or a storyline (like Bonnie) until one of Plec's favorite characters (Caroline, Elena, Damon or Stefan) needs something from them. Some characters in this show are props and only that. You could remove them and replace with a magical device and it would be the same thing.
This lead to ruining the secondary characters. One of the things I used to love about this show (and many people I know loved too) is that during the first two seasons the secondary characters had interesting storylines and this prevented the show from becoming so triangle centered.
Writers letting the fans control the show. Crazy shippers only care about their ship and only that. They don't care if the show gets ruined as long as their ship happens and it's "endgame". The fans knew that as long as they harassed the writers on twitter they would get what they wanted and this is why crappy ships that don't make any sense like Klaroline happened out of the blue.
Exactly. And when it's not the mass-murderers or rapists, it's the "innocent youngun" who would rather cheat on a living breathing human being with a ghost who is dead that no one else can see. Only to rope the female character back into a lasting "real" relationship and seemingly not give a damn after she dies and move on to the next girl.
ReplyDeleteToo many Doppelgangers. The Travelers sucked. I can't stand Liv and her brother. Elena is beyond annoying. And there never seems to be anything really new going on. Tyler never gets enough airtime and there was no point to making him a human again. Bonnie never got any real story other than always being brought in to save everyone. And Caroline just seems to be there to be in everyone else's business. Even Stefan's become boring. This show needs a new writing team with new stories.
ReplyDeleteOhhh this will get messy!
ReplyDeleteMy Season 5 issue is the constant jumping from story to story without any development.
Besides that, the resurrection stuff got pretty annoying, and the latest one coming up soon it will be a safe one for those as well.
And how many times do I have to repeat there is no love triangle anymore. Stefan and Elena are friends.
Caroline being a massive hypocrite, she's a vampire but put her near blood now and she doesn't even vamp out (Mary Sue) shrugging off Tyler's feelings about Klaus when he has made her now ex lover's life a living hell. And she's now a sort to be just passed around around the male cast. Thanks plec for destroying a once fav show and couple. >:(
ReplyDeleteI actually agree with all the options here & more but i will go with the most obvious two-Delena drama & Continuous resurrection of character rendering deaths ineffective in the process.
ReplyDeleteMATT NEEDS A STORYLINE. ASAP.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that there are no shades of grey when it comes to the main characters. Everything Damon does, even if it's mass murder, is explained and justified by the writers. He's a vampire, after all (unlike Lexi or Caroline.. oh, wait). When Elena's okay with all the things Damon did to those supposedly close to her, it's because she's such a good person (and she's not, God forbid, being disloyal). Stefan being a ripper is not the reason why Elena breaks up with him, it's her love for Stefan's brother.
ReplyDeleteIt's just.. You could watch the first two seasons without feeling like your brain is about to explode. Sadly, THIS dumbed down version of TVD is unwatchable.
Dopplegangers. Lame stories. All the heroes being massive villains--and committing the cardinal sin of being boring, whiny moralizing hypocrites in the process.
ReplyDeleteWhere is the "all of the above"???? :p Frankly I use to LOVE TVD and Delena but now..... TVD almost bored me to death the other day (and last year) and I don't even care about Delena anymore (when 2 years ago they were one of my biggest OTP) I don't think I will finish this season.
ReplyDeleteThe love triangle and the fact that the secondary characters have no storyline other than romance. Really urks me that they resurrected Alaric and Jeremy , they're deaths were made completely pointless and with there resurrection we haven't have a "main" character die since Jenna's death in season 2. The writers are real bad yet I still can't drop the show for some reason
ReplyDeleteEverything on this list is why I stopped watching. I've never had a show I like drop so fast in quality.
ReplyDeleteThe O.C & Dexter.
ReplyDeletei've 6 CHOICES not TWO!i'm tired of that triangle , elena direction (and the show being focused on her, instead or more interesting storylines or character) ,villains are becoming boring and they should expand the mytology with new creatures ! i guess till there will be people asking about "stelena" or "delena" with that stupid names , the show won't change ...why stefan can't romance with caroline and demon with bonnie?! is it too difficult?
ReplyDeleteThe show turning into the Delena Diaries.
ReplyDeleteThank you! It's nice to see other sane people in this fandom. Plec ruined Caroline by turning her into her self insert and a Mary Sue. I can't believe people defend her hypocrite actions or how awful she has been to certain characters.
ReplyDeleteAt least this season I'm glad Tyler and Caroline are on good terms. I hope this means Plec will stop using Tyler to prop Caroline Sue especially because last season it backed fired horribly and it made me dislike Caroline even more.
If there was a thumbs up emoticon I'd click it. Yw!
ReplyDeleteThat's another huge problem with this show. If this show had accepted its grey morality back in S3 and the characters would have realized they aren't the good guys anymore they would have avoided lots of bad writing.
ReplyDelete"The fans knew that as long as they harassed the writers on twitter they would get what they wanted and this is why crappy ships that don't make any sense like Klaroline happened out of the blue."
ReplyDeleteAmen.
When I first heard that people were shipping Klaroline after the scene where Klaus graciously heals Caroline from the deadly bite that Tyler was forced by Klaus to give her, I thought it was some kind of bad joke. Next thing you know... that ship is freaking canon. What Plec and her cronies are smoking, I'll never know.
I'd stopped watching by that point, but the notion that Caroline had sex with Klaus is unfathomable to me. I guess that silly, old-fashioned idea that morality is more important than one's raging hormones is officially out of the window.
ReplyDeleteFirst, same storyline again and again...
ReplyDeleteAll of them?
ReplyDeleteOther: the fandom. And polls like this. We get it. Some of you don't like that a show whose premise was a love triangle turned out to be about a love triangle, or that the lead female character has changed over the course of six seasons, or that a supernatural show resurrects people just like most supernatural shows do, or that a show with dubious morality from the first ep continued in that vein, or that the show didn't give you what you wanted with your ship/s. But the bitterness got old a long time ago. Let it gooooooo.
ReplyDeleteAnd spoilertv? I get that you're just picking user submitted polls. But the last TVD poll (other than the weekly episode poll) was another negative one about how "ruined" Elena was or wasn't as a character. Any chance of something a little more cheery soon?
I think the fans are worse than the writers. If you want to ship Klaroline fine but accept it's a screwed up relationship that's never going to work. But those shippers justified everything awful Klaus did and acted like Tyler was the worst person in the planet for being in the middle of that ship. Also they thought it was awesome how Caroline only slept with Klaus because she was attracted physically to him and wanted to have "scandalous sex". Seriously? That's the great writing you were demanding for your ship?
ReplyDeleteAlso I couldn't stop laughing when these people called Tyler a "misogynist douche" while Klaus hurt Caroline physically a lot of times and threaten her life a lot of times.
So much hate, I can´t even look at the comments, I love the show just how it is, it has some ups and downs but that´s it, stop complaining and stop watching if u don´t like.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind these polls as long as the conversation is interesting and it isn't just people bashing Nina Dobrev (dumb people need to understand she isn't Elena or the writers) or posting "Dullena" 20 times.
ReplyDeleteTVD used to my favorite show and it was sad to see it getting ruined when the show used to be so good and there was so much potential.
BASICALLY ALLO OF THE ABOVE. + the constant retconning of their own mythology
ReplyDeleteThe birth of one of the most annoying couples ever: Delena
ReplyDeleteShe can't never survive alone, always depending of the protetion of men.
I didn't watch Dexter but yes to The OC. How could I forget. At least Prison Break gave me two and a half seasons before imploding.
ReplyDeleteso much hate in the comments!
ReplyDeletewhy do you still watch the show or spend your time voting on polls if you hate it so much?
I for one like the show just the way it is!
Everything. Don't know where to start.
ReplyDeleteConstant Resurrections & Same over-used story-arcs and villains !
ReplyDeleteThe Love Triangle doesn't exist anymore. Stelena is dead since 2 years ago. Stefan and Elena are friends now. There's only Delena. So stop talking about a Love Triangle.
um yea that's why now there is a chance we will see Stefan and Elena again - if Alaric remove Damon from her memories!!
ReplyDeletePlease no. Even if I don't ship anyone anymore it would be a really stupid and predictable storyline. It would be incredible annoying but with my bad luck when it comes to tv shows it's probably going to happen.
ReplyDeleteElena's character direction
ReplyDeleteAll of these are bad, for the time-being it seems like Elena is in love with Damon and not into Stefan and that Stefan has moved on so I think they should keep it dead. I think they should have admit Elena is now a villian and move forward with that instead of pretending she's a a good or has any morals.
ReplyDeleteI went with the constant resurrections. When characters die (like Jeremy did in Season 4, or Alaric at the end of Season 3 or Damon/Bonnie are now) I need for them to stay dead.
I also really want more plot-lines for the characters not named Elena or Salvatore so I went with that one for my second choice.
Nah... I think I'll keep doing things my way rather than altering my behaviour to suit your whims.
ReplyDeleteThe poll does ask what they dislike the most and I see a few comments that say they are not watching the show anymore. I don't but I was never invested in a couple or shipping which I feel took over the show.
ReplyDeleteDamon killed Tyler's uncle, Alaric, Jeremy, Lexi (Stefan's BFF), raped Caroline, killed countless extras in Season 1, etc... and they all got over it and spend time with him. Nobody really seems to hold a grudge for very long on this show.
ReplyDeleteCaroline willingly spends time with Damon - the man who raped and abused her 3 years ago. She's killed 16 people (12 witches, the guy at the carnival, 2 of her mothers deputies, and Luke Parker) and has supported Damon/Stefan killing people and Caroline was the one who offed up Tyler's hybrid friend to be killed by Jeremy back in Season 4. I think Caroline's morality is just as screwed up as Stefan & Elena's is.
ReplyDeleteEhm, how about all of the above :D
ReplyDeleteOh believe me I haven't forgotten. Damon is as bad as the rest. I got over delena pretty quickly
ReplyDeleteAll of the above. The stories got repetitive after third season. The showrunners backed themselves into a corner with constantly needing a "bigger bad" than the subsequent season, and having high schoolers always defeat them. Although there's no such thing as the "true death" on this show, which has removed all the consequences and all the risk, they've still managed to eliminate characters important to the fabric of the show such as Alaric (even though he's returned in the current season, but as an Original vampire). The elevation of the Original characters to their own show removed some of the best characters/storylines. Looking at the series in its entirety to date, the only positive element still in effect is the evolution and journey of Caroline. Caroline's transformation and adjustment to her vampirism have been far more compelling and better handled over the seasons than Elena's have been.
ReplyDeleteThe ratings started eroding last season, and I don't see the show rebounding. With enough episodes on the shelf for syndication, I'd be very surprised if it gets a seventh season. The efforts and the timeslot can be turned to the more-adult "The Originals" next year if they don't ruin that this season.
Yes but she acts like she is better than anyone else and judges everyone except for Stefan. That's why she is the biggest hypocrite in this show.
ReplyDeleteStefan is like that too though. Stefan is a mass-murder who has a history of randomly killing lots of people and then ripping apart their bodies (and then reassembling them) but he continues to refer to himself as a "good guy" and I think that sort of rubbed off on Caroline.
ReplyDeleteThe goddamn Love Triangle of Bleh and Doom, and also everything else.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to say all of the above pretty much...the early seasons were great particularly with the writing and how it was never stagnant and really moved and the villains were awesome and truly a threat, but then it felt that the showrunners decided to "CW" the show and create a focus on the romance aspects of the show notably the meh triangle, which in turn ruined the Elena character much like the Caroline love geometry with Klaus/Tyler (and now Stefan apparently). The whole inclusion of Klaus in the 100th ep for me totally felt like nothing more than just to appease the shippers and further yet more triangle conflicts - meh. I get that the triangle element is big for some and seem to be a big staple of CW shows in particular, but making it the constant focus of the show on those elements really take a lot of what interested me in the show away. Klais and the other Originals as villains was initially fantastic, but when they started stoking the romance angles with Klaus/Caroline, Elijah/Elena/Katherine, it felt like the villains became neutered and the later villains were not interesting/threatening - the whole Traveler arc - meh.... and the constantly killing/bringing back characters (even though I liked some of the characters) really cheapened and made the threat of death/dying a moot point as well. I was pretty much disappointed with last season and was on the fence of whether or not to stay with the show and see if it could improve as I still liked some of the characters, but after reading some of the reactions from the last poll of the first ep, I've decided to finally kick the show off my list (the Originals as well) and make some room for some of the new shows that interest me.
ReplyDeleteThose are all good reasons. For me it's a little bit of all. The characterization is the dominant reason why I've stopped watching every episode, the writers have not managed to find a balance between keeping the characters true to themselves and making them evolve them. It's like they're stuck in an infinite loop constantly making the same mistakes, never really achieving anything.
ReplyDeleteI was reminded of that in the first episode of the new season when Elena talks about having grieving down to a science after everyone she's lost. Well yes she should understand grief and still she can't figure out how to grieve for Damon without collapsing into a hysterical puddle.
She's not the only one, Damon has not evolved as much as he pretends, at the smallest problem he goes back to being the bloodthirsty egotist he was in the first episode.
I also lament the lack of evolution of the mythology, what kept me hooked to Supernatural and Teen Wolf is that they're always trying to add to the mythology - not always judiciously but still they make an effort to add new layers to the story. In VD apart from adding werewolves and witches (which are not all that interesting anyway) they're stuck.
As of the new season I can tell you she's still whining and she cries way too much.
ReplyDeleteI like Sheriff Forbes as a parent figure, she's doing ok. But everyone else definitely sucks, even Jenna was not all that great.
ReplyDeleteDamon is the main reason why I keep watching this show, that needs desesperadament to improve
ReplyDeleteI ship Caroline/Klaus but only in an alternate universe type of situation where he hasn't done all the horrible things he's done to her. As for fans and writers I think the shipping is mostly due to the chemistry of the two actors, the same thing happened with Gossip Girl where characters which could absolutely not work together suddenly became couples because the actors had very strong chemistry.
ReplyDeleteI loved Tyler when he and Jeremy got close after Nicky's death, they had some really nice scenes together especially when Jeremy discovered Tyler drew like him (ah the good old days) and I even started shipping the two of them cause it looked like an interesting pairing. But then of course Jeremy became this almost non-existent character, basically just a punching bag and Tyler became a werewolf and went on a totally different trajectory.
ReplyDeleteDamon is the only reason I keep watching the show.
ReplyDeleteThat seems likely. They do have a similar morality now.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he could date someone, that would count as a storyline in Plec's world.
ReplyDeleteI kept watching the OC for Ben McKenzie and Adam Brody but even them were not enough to keep me watching through the end.
ReplyDeleteIt's true that some of the comments about people disliking the show are so amazingly detailed that you have to wonder why they keep watching. But people love criticizing, that's just the way it is.
ReplyDeleteConstant resurrections:It's hard to take seriously a tv show whose characters resurrect constantly. I don't even know how many times Jeremy has died. I think this will change now that the Other Side is gone.(Making an exception with Damon and Bonnie).
ReplyDeleteSame over-used story arcs and villains:in one word:dopplegangers. No need to say anything else.
The Love Triangle, Elena's character direction, constant resurrections, same over-used story-arcs and villains, not enough storylines for supporting cast... OMG, why do I still watch this show?!
ReplyDeleteI voted Constant resurrections and not enough storylines. Personally I felt the triangle was over long time ago. Like yrs back, and by last season, I was able to say yes, it's confirmed (on Stefan's side now) so we can move on. Had a lot of conversation about that last season. I can rest now. To me there is no triangle. It's over.
ReplyDeleteVery tired of the resurrections, (with the exception of Ric sorta). I mean when they characters dies the first time, it was heartbreaking, and then it would be special if we saw them in flashbacks or the afterlife or something. Every time they came back, or every time they come back, it's like oh, well what else is new? I hate it. It was deaths like Jenna or Grams, or even Alaric (at the time) that made it special. Now it's just ....old. Now it just lacks excitement.
Would've loved more storylines for the other characters. Hopefully we'll get some this season. I'm glad every time I see Matty Blue Eyes on screen.
Ratings are way down. Wouldn't surprise me if this was the last season.
ReplyDeleteConstant Resurrections and Not expanding supernatural mythology with new stuff.
ReplyDeleteBut the most important point was missing. The fact that JP completely ruined the show.
The storyline is repeating itself, it develops too slow. And it's getting more ridiculous with each season.
Constant Resurrections (e.g Jeremy, Alaric etc.)
ReplyDeleteNot expanding supernatural mythology with new stuff (e.g banshees, demons, succubus)
also not giving any interesting story to anyone else in the show & make them just boring characters.. ya ok Tyler has anger problem, been there... Jeremy lose someone & cry, done that... and oh Matt i dont even know why he is there !!! ... and Caroline just go hook up with any guy in the show & be judgmental... Elena cry & whining over & over again....
