The Vampire Diaries - Black Hole Sun - Review
26 Oct 2014
Reviews Vampire Diaries VMWhile I don't feel that this episode was on the same level of greatness of the last three, it definitely had some fun, intriguing, and heartwarming moments. Stefan tried to show Elena the advantages to starting over, but only revealed his own vulnerabilities in the process...along with one of Elena's secrets. Meanwhile, we learned more about Kai's backstory and the MacGuffin that might hold the key to setting him, Damon, and Bonnie free...too bad there are other problems to interfere with that plan. And while a flashback to the '90s revealed Damon's lowest moment, in the present day, Sarah pieced together a mystery from that very same tale to finally reveal her parentage.
"You'd be surprised to find out how easy it is to forget the past, Elena." A still-chirpy Elena hitched a ride back to Savannah to observe Stefan in his unnatural habitat, namely that of an underpaid mechanic supposedly content in his new life. While extolling the virtues of a clean slate, Stefan explained the freedom that comes with inventing a new identity for oneself...fitting in a fake proposal to "Elena Williams" just to prove his point. Elena might have bought what Stefan was selling about his contentment, had she not walked back into the bar just in time to see Stefan enjoying having his ass kicked by some random guy. Obviously, as we might have gleaned from his perhaps punishingly bare-bones choice of new lives, Stefan is far from content and seeks masochistic forms of relief from his grief. Much to my surprise and enjoyment, after Elena pointed out the problems in his own behavior, Stefan couldn't listen to her memory-erased version of events regarding Damon any longer. He finally snapped and told her that she had loved Damon and that Alaric had erased those memories. Thank you, Stefan! That plotline needed to take a definitive turn for the better.
I also loved Stefan's wise, deeply emotional speech to Elena explaining why she cared so much for Damon, since her current memory bank makes that seem so absurd.
"You loved Damon for the same reasons that I loved Damon. Because in spite of every single thing that he did, we couldn't live without him. Now you don't have to, but I do." - Stefan
That was so brilliantly succinct and accurate, not to mention right on at the end, given that Stefan doesn't have the luxury of a memory wipe to protect him from the pain of losing his brother. Ultimately, even though Elena has not yet opted to get her memories of loving Damon back, at least she's not unaware of the truth in the matter. Props as well to Alaric for his wryly self-depricating admission that he doesn't always know what's best. He does have a lot of his own problems, like a possibly overly sassy new love interest that doesn't seem much better than Meredith so far, though the jury's still out until we see more of Jo. And still, Alaric found time to talk some sense into the ever-wishy-washy Jeremy, reminding him that everyone has angst and not everyone deals with it by whining and moping uselessly through multiple episodes.
A trail of destruction in Kai's wake. We knew Kai was no boy scout, but yeesh, his track record is appalling, as he revealed by merrily recounting his murder of his own family. Turns out that Kai is associated with the Gemini coven, and they didn't take so kindly to his evil acts, banishing him to the 1994 purgatory. Once Bonnie found out about Kai's wicked ways, she resolved not to try to return to the real world, since she and Damon would be bringing a horrible killer back with them. But since Kai can highjack Bon Bon's powers and Damon doesn't share Bonnie's moral caveats, will the guys be held back by her decrees? This situation has gotten even trickier now, though Damon's friendly and protective behavior towards Bonnie makes me hope he'll at least try to do the right thing by her.
Despite or because of Kai's evilness, it's super-fun to watch him team up with Damon and Bonnie. The quips and tension among the trio are brilliant.
What Damon was up to in May, 1994. I honestly didn't like this part of the episode very much, except for the extremely sweet and cute sight of a younger Liz showing off a picture of the "high maintenance" little Caroline. Aw! I guess that even though we all know that Damon's done horrible things aplenty, this plot device of using some previously unseen dreadful deed from Damon's past to provide a new twist in the story has been a little too well-trodden (especially in Season 5, with the Augustine saga) for my taste. It was especially tiresome to have Damon's depressing murder of Gail confirmed so predictably after Bonnie anticipated it early in his recounting of the story.
Even though I found this specific build-up to be patience-stretching, we did finally get the pay-off by learning that Sarah is the daughter of Zach Salvatore and his girlfriend Gail. What's really most interesting about this is that Sarah is a Salvatore. We sure don't see many of those, and it will be interesting to see those implications (of extended family) unfold for Stefan and Damon. I would have found it cooler if Sarah was Bonnie's half-sister, but okay.
Tripp's motives, revealed... Hmm, a wife killed by a vampire who compelled Tripp to forget? Not the most original origin story, but maybe there's more to Tripp that we'll learn about down the line, or maybe he has other tricks up his sleeves than acting like a more brutal one-man Founder's Council. Anyway, Tripp revealed to Matt that he's keeping Enzo prisoner, trying to get the vamp to reveal the names of his fellow local bloodsuckers (good luck with that...this is not Enzo's first imprisonment-and-torture rodeo). This plotline is well-anchored with interest by Enzo's involvement and the fact that when Caroline comes back into the action, she'll probably have something to say about Tripp's methods as well. These are good things, since if this was just a Matty-Boo subplot, it might fizzle out - Colin Ferguson is very engaging in the role of Tripp, but he needs to interact with more characters.
Ivy's back! I was happy to have my suspicions confirmed as Stefan's girlfriend reappeared, not feeling too well (transitioning, in other words), since Enzo had made her drink his blood before killing her. Oh, Enzo, you old softy...well, by TVD bad boy standards, anyway. While Stefan was saddened and embittered by Ivy's loss, it will be interesting to see how he'll deal with now likely having to serve as her mentor during her adjustment to vampirism, especially since her personality will be heightened now.

The fact that they showed Emily Chang's name in the credits of the first segment is already telling on the outcome of her character, and not simply show up as a mere photo and gets paid for it as per guild rules.
ReplyDeleteRight. I didn't remember the actress's name but thought she'd be back anyway. I liked the ending.
ReplyDeleteugh....more Stefan drama....yay
ReplyDeleteFloved every moment of the epi with Damon and Bonnie. The Kai character I can do with out....he is kinda ruining the lovers getaway....in my books.
ReplyDeleteThat being said (*as I was joking above....but not really*), the Bonnie and Damon escape for me is the best thing happening in the show. Its the reason why I am tunning in after a two year hiatus of the show. It even got me to binge watch all past epi's. I am just sooo over the writers of this show....they kind of take the fans for granted, as they pump out the same stuff week after week....with almost no character growth. Elena....is seriously boring....no one cares that she is under a new crisis over some boy....same goes for Jeremy.....Matt,...Tyler....Alaric...Stefan....Enzo, who is captured again by some cult....it just seems like we have done this all before in varying degrees on many different epi's....I just wish the writers would write, innovative storylines for these characters....I even used to like Caroline, but they have zapped that as well....I am ceasing to care about this show....and it is not enough of a pull for them to only give one or two scenes to get viewers to come back week after week. I would respect the show more if they just wrote storylines, rather then pandering to one fandom over the other....it is ruining the show. I am interested in the story that the show is trying to weave, and it is no longer enough what they are giving me as a viewer.
It was definitely predictable.
ReplyDeleteThe flashback sequences could have been a little stronger but the other twists were pretty good-kinda predictable but definitely interesting going forward.Sarah turning out to be a salvatore or matt in on tripp's secret or elena now being aware of her memories of damon selectively altered or the fact that kai can potentially kill bonnie by hizacking her witchy powers & eventually damon too.Next week would get very interesting with kai, bonnie & damon trying to get out from that hellhole. My guess-bonnie gets stuck, damon and kai crosses over-i definitely can't see all three of them hitching a ride safely to the land of the living.I am also looking forward to the caroline-matt-stefan teamup to saave enzo from tripp-that would a lot of fun to watch.Loved alaric's conversations with jeremy and elena,he's turning out to be such a fresh welcome addition this season. As per spoilers, next week we will know that jo can't be compelled-so that means either she is on vervain,or a werewolf,or something else entirely-i can't wait to find out.Ivy turning into a vampire was very predictable & the least interesting plot for me this episode.Let's see how caroline teaches her to control her hunger next episode.
ReplyDeleteLovely review. The writers definitely have cleared up the mess they made min the last half of season 5.Looking forward to the next episode!!
Thanks! Definitely agree that the writers have set up some situations for the next episode that should be really enjoyable to watch play out.
ReplyDeleteI understand where you're coming from. I think the Damon and Bonnie plotline is a major draw for viewers this season, and hopefully the writers can make the very best of it while continuing to raise the quality of the other aspects in he show.
ReplyDeleteThanks Virginia. :) I know epic rant above.....lol
ReplyDeleteBut it is true. The writers are tired.....and it shows......
As a fan of Stefan -- but completely over the whole Stelena thing, seriously, even Damon should be over her too when he discovers her memory wipe. I'd much rather be mourned than forgotten -- I really like how they're showing his grief, and his reluctance to come clean about it to anyone. I know the synopsis for next week, that he reveals all to Caroline, and I hope she is properly put in her place for judging him so badly rather than trying to understand him. I'll give Elena small credit for at least asking Stefan to show her his process rather than simply judging it.
ReplyDeleteHe's fixing up his brother's car as a way of keeping something of Damon close. It's a loving and fitting way for him to deal with his grief and remember his brother: fixing up Damon's beloved car. I assume he had Liz tow it out of Mystic Falls. ;-)
Nice review. I agree, so over Kai. Bonnie and Damon together is some of the freshest work this show has put out in a long, long time. As for Jeremy, blah, should have left him dead a few seasons back.
As far as Stefan is concerned, I've been annoyed by him every time he being an annoying arse for some reason like the time back in Season 4 when he kept on nagging Jeremy to draw out the hunter's mark on his arms when he forced him to kill a transitioning vampire Stefan turned.
ReplyDeleteA bit of an opposite with Damon who treats Jer like an actual little brother he cares about (and somewhat channel his inner BB-ness that he never did with Stefan).
I'm annoyed over some people at another forum when they can't seem to be satisfied whenever they see some character development over someone they hate, like say Damon and Elena. I'm not into the Stelena-Delena shipwars nor am I a big Damon fan, but seeing him actually being able to feel even the slightest hint of remorse over one of the many horrible things he did over 150 years as a vampire should be seen as a step towards the right direction for the character, with Bonnie keeping him afloat.
ReplyDeleteNot sure how affected in the long-term mind-wiped Elena will be after learning that she was dangerously grief-stricken over Damon. I'm hoping it's a way for the writers to give Nina Dobrev's character some individuality for a change after several seasons attaching her to someone's hip. At least by the time Damon inevitably comes back from the dead, they will both start fresh from scratch. Perhaps a more organic development and not something brought upon because of a "sire bond" or an unhealthy relationship.
This episode changed my opinion about Stefan. I hated him in episode 3 but in this one,he behaved like a normal person and confessed how much he missed his brother.Plus,he told Elena the truth, that gave him extra points.
ReplyDeleteKai is a great villain. He is a mixture between funny and psychopath. Watching how Damon protects Bonnie is the best part of the show.I have the feeling after watching the promo of the next episode that Damon will get out but Bonnie will get stuck in 1994 with Kai.
The flashback wasn't the best one but I liked it. It showed the worst thing Damon has ever done and I love Sarah's true identity. It's a good twist.
they're tired aright.. but not the way your meaning it.. lol
ReplyDeletethey just plain ole suck
their not gonna leave her there... they'll probably drag it out and Damon and Bonnie have some kind of plan to get out and of course double cross Kai and leave him still stuck...
ReplyDeleteThanks, and lol, I agree with your impatience towards Jeremy...he's so annoying! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a really good point about Damon's progress and regret...it made me feel a little less bothered by the flashback parts of this episode. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with a lot of your views, especially Stefan making some good strides forward in this episode. Agree, though I didn't care for the flashback overall, Sarah's identity was a nice reveal.
ReplyDeleteHmmm I suspect Kai will end up in the real world somehow, but it would be nice to see Damon and Bonnie work together to try to get out without him.
ReplyDeleteLMAO!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am in agreement, Stefan is annoying...I would say ever since Elena left him, he has been super annoying....kinda whinny.
ReplyDeleteYou highlight some good points about the grieving process....perhaps the funk of the show is meant to depict the overall hopelessness of it all for all of the characters, except those in the alternate realm......which could explain why there is no moment in terms of the storyline....
ReplyDeleteThis post made me choke on my last french fry. Damon killed Jeremy on two separate occasions and threatened his life on multiple other occasions to get what he wanted (or on sometimes, just to get back at Elena for rejecting him), Unless you're using the relationship between Klaus and his siblings as the gold standard, I have a hard time seeing those actions as brotherly.
ReplyDeleteJeremy got that family heirloom of a ring so he survived getting Damon'ed on those occasions. Damon has since mellowed down since then.
ReplyDeleteKlaus is messed up so he's no 24k himself. Then again, his relationship with his sibling are like any other dysfunctional unit out there, only supersized with them being vampires, souls living in people's bodies, and all that...
What I dont get. Tripps wife was killed by a Vampire (and hey thought here... are we sure she is dead?.... cue Guest Actress role!) and the Vampire compelled him to forget it happened.
ReplyDeleteHow did he thus remember it happened now? He isnt a Vampire... his conditioning hasnt been removed. Now if its connected to taking Vervain later why dosnt Sheriff Forbes... Liz.. remember Damon from the Boarding house party? Surely she would of been on vervain for a while.
I did love that touch though, its awesome to get character throwbacks like that.
Nobody else is starting to think that Jeremy is perhaps now bulked up a bit too much? Hes getting to mini hulk level.
ReplyDeleteWhen Damon first "killed" Jeremy, he didn't know that Jeremy was wearing a ring so the intent was to kill him. As I recall, he did it because he was angry at Elena for rejecting him. Also, when Katherine took over Elena's body last season, Damon went on a killing spree because he thought that Elena didn't love him. Damon and Enzo also took Jeremy hostage last season and basically threatened to kill him in order to get Bonnie to help him. So I would strongly argue that Damon's hasn't really mellowed that much and also that he doesn't particularly care for Jeremy.
ReplyDeleteDamon's actions have always been motivated by Elena, which is why he really hasn't shown much character development. Don't get me wrong. I like Damon's character a lot; he's extremely charismatic, which is why viewers (myself included) are quick to forgive him, but I also think he's a loose cannon (and also a brat!). who would not hesitate to hurt anyone for the sake of Elena. But perhaps we'll finally see a change this season. I think that being isolated with Bonnie is exactly what he needs for character growth, and we've already seen evidence of that in the recent episode. The Damon-Bonnie scenes are the main reason I tune in this season.
That's why I mentioned before that if Damon and Elena are to restart their relationship, it has to be more organic and not brought upon by things like compulsion, sire bonds, and everything else that made Delena such an unhealthy relationship to begin with.
ReplyDeleteWith Elena having her mind wiped off her Damon memories, perhaps we could see if he will react in a more sensible way this time around once he comes back.
LMAO!! You are hilarical.
ReplyDeleteI think he is good....I'm not noticing anything weird...but to be honest Jeremy is a fast forward person for me.....when Matt, Jeremy and Tyler are on, they get the FF treatment.
He was compelled to forget about the accident but when he crossed over the border, the compulsion wore off as it is a form of magic just like sarah. So,entering mystic falls,he remembered the whole event. It was clearly explained in the previous episode.
ReplyDeleteI loved the scene between Ric and Jer. I thought Ric was harsh on Jeremy, because 1) Jeremy has lost not just a wife and a Jenna over the course of many years, but his parents, uncle and aunt, Vicki, Anna twice, Bonnie twice, Elena (when she became a vamp) and then died himself countless times. 2) A few episodes ago Elena was doing drugs... and asked to have her memory erased.
ReplyDeleteStill loved it. I am still so appreciative of Alaric's return. He makes a great addition to the show being an adult and, you know, just himself. And I ADORE his relationship with the Gilbert children.
Haha. I'm a Jeremy fan and I think they keep cutting short the storylines they give him (for instance his hunter's SL), but I agree with that. Too much :3
