The Strain - Last Rites - Review: "The Apocalypse Will Be Televised"
5 Oct 2014
GN Reviews The StrainThe penultimate episode of The Strain's first season aired Sunday night setting up what should be a great finale. Some questions that were looming overhead since the pilot were answered, while others remained a mystery until, hopefully, tomorrow night when the season comes to a close. The Strain has done well, ratings wise, over the course of the first 12 episodes as most expected it would. When you have Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan writing, producing and occasionally directing along with Carlton Cuse acting as showrunner, you can expect the quality of the program to increase dramatically.
'Last Rites' begins with Eph, Nora, Vasily and Setrakian returning to the pawn shop from their eventful encounter with The Master last episode. Setrakian is still very much upset with the team for not cornering The Master when they had the chance and Eph is the only one that brings this up. Setrakian withdraws to his fortified basement and ponders their situation longer, thinking of what the teams next move should be.
Dutch Velders arrives at the pawn shop just in time to offer up a new plan to bring the vampire apocalypse to the masses. She can tap into the Emergency Alert System and bring a live feed of Eph telling everyone, that is in front of a TV, what he has seen regarding the strigoi. Dutch eventually gets that plan working and Eph is able to convey his important message across to the population. I thought it was very funny when Vasily said to Eph, "With your charm, the sky's the limit". I'm hoping, after the last episode, their friendship becomes a little stronger, which would make for some better scenes between the two than the animosity we have seen for most of their time together.
The best part of the episode was the return of the mysterious hooded strigoi, Mr. Quinlan, that saved Alonso Creem and kidnapped Gus. I would have loved more scenes of Mr. Quinlan this season, but I'm sure there will be plenty next year. There is a possibility he could have a more prevalent role in the finale as well.
The flashbacks were a great addition as we learned the exact reason Setrakian keeps a vampire heart in a jar. It was a sad moment that mirrored what Nora was going through in present day. Setrakian seemed like a lost soul seeking vengeance for what happened to Miriam all those years ago. I imagine his real angst is with Eichorst and not The Master, but he figures if he can take out The Master then Eichorst will vanish with him. 'Last Rites' was definitely one of the better episodes of the season and makes me look forward to tonights Finale.
Thoughts and Discussion
- Did you notice...Alonso Creem is played by Jamie Hector. The same actor that played gang leader Marlo Stanfield on The Wire.
- This one is for the fans that have read the Trilogy...Did you like the way they progressed Eldritch Palmer's story line?
- I was thinking of making the Tagline for the Review, 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart', but thought that would be too cheesy. ...Get it?...'Total Eclipse'...'Heart'...no?...forget it.
- What does everyone think will happen on the Finale? Will Setrakian get his revenge on The Master? Who will or won't make it out alive? Let me know in the comments!
Thanks for checking out my Review! I'm looking forward to the finale tonight and will get the Review out by tomorrow so keep an eye out for it! Have a great weekend everyone!
i want Nora and Eph to die. both are super boring.. but i dont think thats gonna happen..
ReplyDeletei love love Mr. Quinlan, i want to know his story & see more of him, and why he kidnapped Gus!!
Lol, that is a very bold first sentence Abby. I think you will like their relationship once Season Two begins. I also think we will understand what Mr. Quinlan has in store for everyone and Gus in tonight's episode. I like Mr. Quinlan too, he was one of my favorite characters from the books.
ReplyDeleteBest episode of the season. It had the best balance of story and action. It was very intriguing, but the episode wasn't great. Just good.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Good, but not great. The Finale should be great though.
ReplyDeleteYour review has me re-energized for tonight's finale. What a welcome viewing addition this series has been.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I could help out! I'm excited for tonight's Finale as well!
ReplyDeletegonna have to agree w/you about eph, he has to be the most lame and boring character on tv right now...hope Geo is correct about him stepping up in the 2nd season as this guy will be a tv show deal breaker
ReplyDeleteGreat Review George!
ReplyDeleteRIP Nora's Mother. I didn't like her anyway. I was glad to finally see where the vampire heart that Setrakian had been keeping came from. His past has been very tough on him , its no wonder he really wants to take down the master. I have a very bad feeling though that tonight's finale will leave it on a cliffhanger and one of our group wont make it to season 2. If someone is going to die in the finale then I hope it is Nora , she has been one of the most annoying characters to watch. I cant stand her moaning not to mention that crying we have seen on countless occasions. I do not want FET to die , he is my favorite followed by Setrakian.
I hope Nora dies too. So annoying and so useless to the show.
ReplyDeleteShe has here moments , but she is definitely the weakest link.
ReplyDeleteI think it will be good, not great.
ReplyDeleteThanks Robert!
ReplyDeleteI was kind of ok with Nora's Mother exiting the series. She didn't really have a solid place among the rest of the cast. Lol, I understand what you mean about Nora, but I don't think she will be the one to bite the dust. My money is on Dutch being the one to go tonight. I'm sure Fet is safe (he is my favorite too).
Really excited for the Finale, though! I think it will be great!
Lol
ReplyDeleteI will take 'good'. I don't know if I can stomach another poor season finale form a summer show. After 'Under The Dome' I want at least a 'good' season ender.
ReplyDeleteYou are probably right about Dutch , she is the newbie and the one most likely to die out of our team.
ReplyDeleteI think we saw a new side of Nora that should make her more interesting. She's changing from whining "We are hunting human beings" to being able to release her own mother. This darker side makes me hopeful.
ReplyDeleteI think she's going to become useful now, with that moment clearly showing how she's going to change. She's not my least favorite (she's gotten better), Eph is.
ReplyDeleteNoooo! Don't kill Dutch! She's the one bringing some freshness and comical relief to the series (other than Fet, obviously). I haven't read the books, but I like she's not an original character (I believe). As with GoT, it makes it more difficult for people who've read the original material to guess what'll happen.
ReplyDeleteGreat review!
ReplyDeleteI like your suggestion of Fet and Eph becoming good friends, but I hope that it gives us more (funny) banter between them! Bringing back Mr. Creem gave some cohesion to Gus' story (specifically their scene earlier in the season, which I believed was crap filler) and it gave us a peek of the Master's plan for global domination.
Can't wait for today!
I agree, Dutch became one of my favorite characters, don't want her to die.
ReplyDeleteI don't like her and she seems the most likely to die tonight.
ReplyDeleteThe show has been extremely disappointing to me. I was so hyped for this show and I was hoping it would be great. For the whole season, I give it an okay. Nothing too impressive and it just suffers from the same problems every episode.
ReplyDeleteI am a little disappointed as well, not extremely disappointed, but I understand where you are coming from. I re-read the Trilogy right before the pilot aired because I was so excited for the series. But I think the issue with Season One is that they adapted it from Book One - The pilot was based on the first HALF (Actually about 60%) of the book. So they needed material for the other 12 episodes and that stretched things a little too thin for the rest of the season. That's my take anyway. I think you will love the series once Season Two starts. Books Two and Three are very good. I'm not saying Book One was bad, but the way the pilot covered more than half of t is what made the first season less than good. I am actually just sitting down to watch the Finale right now.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I have seen on Social Media, yeah, 'Fet' is to The Strain as 'Daryl' is to The Walking Dead, Lol.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
ReplyDeleteI am actually re-watching the Finale right now to prepare for my Review.
