Another family reunion this week, although a lot more explosive than last week. Esther organized a dinner party, which ended in a big argument. Elijah, after some resistance, agreed to train Gia. Esther jumped into a new body and tried to confuse Hayley by promising her a fresh start. The episode featured flashbacks that showed the relationship between Klaus and his mother when he was still human.
Best flashback: I loved the scene where Esther comforted Klaus. We haven’t seen much of what things were like before she turned her kids into vampires. The interactions between Esther and her children were very interesting. You can see that she’s trying to divide her love equally amongst them, but that still doesn’t prevent Finn from getting jealous (we all know he stole the necklace). I hope we’ll get to see more interactions between the kids, including Henrik.
Least favorite character: Finn had more screen time in this episode that his entire stint on ‘The Vampire Diaries’. I know kids get jealous, although he was hardly a kid anymore. But it’s mostly present day Finn that’s pissing me off. I don’t remember Finn being this hostile. The only real violence we’d seen from him before was right after he was undaggered (didn’t blame him for that though). Right before he died, I could have sworn he and Klaus got along. He even reunited him with Sage. But that’s long forgotten now. I guess when it comes to his mother, Finn will really do anything for her. I just feel like there’s some backstory for him that we’re missing.
Best confrontation: I can’t help but wonder, if Esther had never subdued Klaus’ strength, would Mikael have still hated him as much as he does now. Say Klaus had been strong like his brother’s, and Mikael wouldn’t have already hated him for 10(?) years. Would Mikael’s reaction still have been to hunt him down to the ends of the earth. I guess we’ll never know now. It was a very emotional confrontation between Klaus and his mother (even though I couldn’t help but wish Alice Evans had been in this scene). And just when Klaus finally gets to confront her, she flees. She basically jumped into another body in the middle of his sentence. How rude.
Favorite new character: I just have to mention Gia. So far I like her. She’s trying to find her way, just like Josh last year (only in a slightly less hostile environment). I look forward to seeing her train with Elijah. A show can never have too many kickass women.
Best conversation: I just wanted to quickly mention the conversation between Klaus and Hayley about his mother. It’s very similar to when Rebekah told Elena about their past. I almost felt sorry for Esther when hearing the story again. I mean, it’s kind of understandable wanting to make you children immortal when you’ve lost two of them already. Then after that she was faced with the guilt of the bodies they left behind in their thirst for blood. It’s everything that happened afterwards that she could’ve handled a lot better. Maybe if she’d used the same spell Qetsiyah used on Silas, things wouldn’t have gotten this messy.

ReplyDeleteNot really, as that scene with Esther left him underwhelming to me. But another scene for next week ep has me wondering, if he can do magic as well now.
ReplyDeleteFinn's got a lot and I mean a lot of bottled up hostility for being daggered and stuck in a box for a longgggggggggg... he's letting it out... I do have to admit that Elijah is getting on my nerves a bit... its Klaus this and Klaus that... and that holier than thou demeanor..and there's nothing they could ever do to get me to like Hayley

ReplyDeleteI'm a little confused by the whole being daggered thing though. I thought they weren't consious while being daggered. That it was just like they were asleep. But Finn said he had a lot of time to think. Not sure if it's just something I didn't understand or if it's bad writing.
ReplyDeleteI feel like that if Klaus had not been weakened by Esther, Mikeal would have succeeded in killing him long ago. Only because we've seen Tyler and his rage issues can easily be manipulated, and the Klaus of then was clearly not the Klaus of now in their mythology.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't even considered that the necklace would also subdue the anger issues. That's a good point, even though his anger was magnified when he turned.

ReplyDeleteI don't get how Mickael would have succeeded in killing Klaus.....as you say, "Klaus was weakened by Esther"....would it not have been the other way.....
ReplyDeleteI just look at this way, because Mikeal would have known about the change and had more experience and could have survived him easily. Probably using too much tvd mythology, but Tyler was always pretty weak with no training when he first shifted, and I don't see Esther just taking him to his pack to do that.

ReplyDeleteI will say this, nu-Finn is acting the shiznat outta this role. He is really really good. I am rarely ever fond of the newbies, but he is doing his thang well!
I get the resentment for being held in a box for 900 years...but this seems an odd point in the story to bring up this resentment....would he not have been more upset when they first undaggered him in TVD.....not sure how they are weaving this together...but just seems out of step with the whole story arch of these characters.....IMO

ReplyDeleteI just think he Mikael could have done it at any point, given that Klaus was magically subdued by Esther....hence her whole, "hold on to the pendant and it will immediately bring me to you", so that she could protect him.....she knew that she had made him a sitting duck.
I think Mikael is sadistic and played a lot of abusive mind games with his children, most especially Klaus. So he wanted Klaus to know that he could kill him at any time, as he was weak....but in his mind what would be the point, as Klaus's death was assured given that he was so weak. Hence the reason he struck him with his sword, close enough to almost kill him, but still leave him alive.....so that Klaus would know who was weak and who was strong in their battle of wills.
isn't he in the body of a witch... maybe that's really ramping up his feelings and senses. hell I don't know.. just grabbing at straws but I could see how he was feeling in every word.. that actor is doing a great job

ReplyDeleteHe can do magic. He's done it a couple of times and he spoke about it with Davina. Narducci also hinted that Kol was a witch before he was turned.
ReplyDeleteYusuf Gatewood (Finn) was absolutely incredible this episode. He's an outstanding actor and I'd argue maybe the best on the show right now. It was very good to see his demeanour change when he mentioned being daggered. He went from having that sense of control and composure to an upset, angry and confused brother who'd been wronged. That was a very nice moment for me. The whole dinner scene was fantastic. I wish we could've had Kol there too, just to see what the dynamic would have been like with all the siblings in the one place, but we did get a Kol-centric kinda episode last week so I understand. Looking forward to seeing how all of this plays out. (I still can't stand Esther.)
