Here’s a piece of casting news that’s sure to make some noise: Smash vet Andy Mientus is joining The Flash as hearing impaired (and openly gay) DC Comics villain Pied Piper (AKA Hartley Rathaway), TVLine has learned exclusively.
One of DC’s original Rogues, Hartley is a bona fide genius who used to work at S.T.A.R. Labs until a falling out with his mentor, Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh). The particle accelerator robbed Hartley of his hearing, but inspired him to create a series of sonic weapons that he uses in an effort to punish Wells by destroying his new protege: The Flash.
Pied Piper is one of the few openly gay villains in the DC Universe, and I’m told The Flash will not be shying away from that aspect of the character.

Does any one find it a little strange that they cast a gay actor for the role?
ReplyDeleteno...not really. Doesen't make acting kisses easier or harder. They're uncomfortable either way
ReplyDeleteThey're uncomfortable either way
ReplyDeleteHa.
No. Wentworth Miller is gay and he plays Captain Cold (straight). John Barrowman is gay and he is also playing a straight character. Katrina Law is straight and she is playing a gay woman.
ReplyDeleteOh! We have half of the Silver Age Rogue's cast now (5 out of 10). Dare I say, the season final will involve a team up?
ReplyDeleteFlash sure have a lot of Rouge/villains unlike GA.......
ReplyDeleteI hope there's a team up I would love it.
ReplyDeleteIn the comic books, The Flash truly does have more villains specific to him than Green Arrow does.
ReplyDeleteYep, Flash's Rogue Gallery rivals Batman. Green Arrow tend to fight more "human" villains and the few unique rogues he has has already been introduced (well, except Constantine Drakon who they wasted as Adam Hunt's head of security in the premiere)
ReplyDeleteWhat's strange about it? Do you mean that they looked for a gay actor to play a gay role? I doubt that, because most gay and bisexual characters are played by straight actors.
ReplyDeleteYES. I LOVE Andy. Stoked.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Drakon was wasted on. For the character, someone who is a skilled fighter and thought to be a metahuman, he faced Green Arrow where GA became the only one to defeat him…I think it's fine that "The Hood" ended up defeating Drakon in the pilot, because what more could have been done to the villain? He'd only end up being similar to Bronze Tiger in the series anyways, imo.
ReplyDeleteIf anything, I'd say Firefly was the only villain used so far that was wasted.
Can't wait for him and to see his history with Wells, as well as being a cool, openly gay, villain (though isn't he reformed in the new comics? Could be an interesting future story line).
ReplyDeleteYou've got a point about Bronze Tiger. He does seem to incorporate a few of Drakon's traits from the comic.
ReplyDeleteThe Flash's rogues gallery is shaping up really nice. If only Arrow had such interesting villains.
ReplyDeleteOh, I know Firefly is a Batman villain, I was just saying which villain, I think, Arrow has done poorly in its two season run, lol.
ReplyDeleteWell he does have Prometheus. Which I hope the show eventually uses (I wonder if Roy will die if they do), but yeah he doesn't have the best.
ReplyDeleteThey are. Weell unless maybe you're dating that person in reality.
ReplyDeletePromethus is more of a JLA villain, even if Green Arrow had...important interactions with him.
