The 100 - Inclement Weather - Advance Preview: "A beautifully constructed follow up"

If you liked the season premiere of The 100 then buckle up, because this episode is way better. There is so much stuff going on and all of it goes with perfect pacing and timing; all the secrets and revelations come when they are supposed to, the characters interactions are all interesting and makes for innovating dynamics on this season and the exploration of our characters psyche is just outstanding. If the premiere setup a whole new world for this season, then this episodes takes advantage of that and delivers an outstanding episode.

Now, for the Octavia and Lincon of it all I won’t give much away; I’ll just say that Octavia has to fend for herself as Lincon goes away and she shows a lot of badassery during the episode. I think you’ll be pleased with the way she handles things. She will have some troubles with the grounders, and they’ll prove once again that they are really mighty opponents.

On the Ark, the whole cliffhanger with the baby gets resolve. I won’t give much away, but we get to see a completely new side of Jaha that we have never seen until now, bringing out truly poignant moments and an awesome delivery by Isaiah Washington, who owned the whole storyline.

So let’s see how things are going on Camp Jaha: there’s a clear tension on the powershift that has gone through. The adults are now in charge and the kids are supposed to listen to them. That makes great tension, especially between Kane and Bellamy, who have a very interesting dynamic; they aren’t enemies but the tension between them is so strong that they may as well be enemies. Both Henry Ian Cusick and Bob Morley get to share a great scene together, bringing some of the great talents of both actors.

The adults have to learn to deal with what The 100 have been dealing through season 1: the grounders. Plenty of troubles come from the grounders and it shows how the lack of info on them gives Kane a pretty hard time; he finds himself on a really tough spot and he has to deal with hard decisions.

Also worth noting, drastic measures are taken in order to save Raven’s life, and as she goes to surgery her life is pending on a thread; Finn is there to help her through the process and it brings out some really emotional stuff. The surgery has a big effect on what Finn and it determines what he will do later in the episode and during episode 3 as well.

Meanwhile, on Mt. Weather, Clarke is still suspicious of everything that is going on there; President Wallace is doing a really good job covering up everything that looks shady, but Clarke doesn’t give up easily: she looks for the cracks and she finds them by the end of the episode, and it is… shocking, to say the least.

During the episode we get to know more about Mt. Weather than what we saw during the premiere, we also get to see how Monty and Jasper are settling down there, so that brings even more friction with Clarke. They know she is looking out for them, but they also worry that in doing so Clarke may be their undoing- Jasper worries about this more than Monty actually.

So we get to see them in a different place than what we saw during season 1; Jasper and Monty hardly ever had any issue with Clarke, so it’s interesting to see this new dynamic. And considering Clarke already found the crack that shows what lies beneath what looks like paradise, it’s only a matter of time before these two find out, and it’s going to hit them really hard considering how attached they are becoming to this “peaceful place”.

As a whole, this episodes comes together quite nicely exploring the psyche of our characters, it moves the plot forward with exciting developments and twists while also finding perfect pacing. The season is still starting, so there’s still a lot more to develop and the episode is still putting arranging the chessboard for the season, but it does it so perfectly that even if it’s not the most exciting episode the show has done, it is so brilliantly constructed that it deserves a top grade.

Grade: A

Stray Observations:

-Kane indirectly says to Bellamy that he could have saved plenty of his comrades if he tried harder. That’s gotta sting.

-Jasper and Maya keep bonding; I have the feeling this won’t end well.

-Clarke keeps proving that she is a really resourceful heroine; I love how the show went this route with her; she is so badass!

- I didn’t say much about Abbie, mostly to avoid spoilers, but she got a lot to do, from taking care of Raven’s surgery and overseeing how Kane is handling everything.

-There are new grounders that seem to be key characters for what’s coming on this season.

-There’s a surprising return in the last minute of the episode. The cliffhanger left me quite shocked and believe me when I say that I had to watch the following episode right away, even when I was supposed to go somewhere else. I delayed what I had to do to see what happened- it was that good of a cliffhanger.

  1. so i guess kane isn't taken down a peg, what a dick he is for saying that to bellamy and does he get his ass kicked by the grounders (kane i mean), and are there more finn and bellamy bromance moments and do we hear more Grounder language

  3. Great preview Pablo! This was a great episode and as you mentioned the ending is quite jaw-dropping. Hopefully the ratings will rise because they were way too low last week.

  5. part of me hopes the grounders capture and torture kane and see his attitude towards the 100 then, and i found it strange that wallace calls the grounders grounders because only the 100 call them that maybe jasper and monty told him that's what they call them but it's strange that clarke didn't find it weird

  7. Is it someone we've been speculating bto still be alive but forgot all about in all the action the last des episodes?

  8. Wow I cannot wait until Kane gets a heavy dose of reality. Every time I think he's turning a new leaf. Ugh. I hope by the end of the season some of the 100 will go off on their own and establish their own camp. Most of them are close to 18, Kane can't FORCE them to remain citizens under his control forever... but anyhoo, can't wait to see where this season is going!

  9. i'm going to guess that the "surprising return" is charlotte? there was a rumour going around that she'd be returning this season. there was no body after all, and if she landed in water when she jumped off the cliff she could've survived. perhaps she's somehow ended up with the new recurring grounder characters? i'm probably wrong though. there was never any legitimate source / confirmation in regards to the charlotte rumour. and i'm almost always wrong with my speculation xD either way, i'm really excited. especially for octavia and clarke going badass!

  10. oh wow i still haven't watched any of the first 3 episodes we were sent -_- but i'll read this as soon as i've seen them!

  13. i just can't see how these Arkers can look at finn, bellamy and the rest of the 100 and treat them like kids when you can look them in the eye and you can tell that these so-called-kids have more experience living on the ground than the adults will ever have with what they've been through, they had to grow up faster than any child should have to, they buried friends and built a freaking society and they treat them like they were waiting around until they came down, sorry for the rant it's just that i just re-watched the episode and got more pissed than when i first saw it lol

  14. Hopefully it will pick up after The World Series is done.. I think a lot of the fans watch online or later DVR, so lets see what were the ratings in the Live+7 too. I think they will get better. I see so many media buzz about this show.. It deserves many seasons!

  15. I don't think Charlotte had survived such a huge fall, even in water, I'd love it though, the actress is terrific!!, I bet on Jaha, nobody is really expecting him to jump from the remains of the ark to earth, and the actor is confirmed as regular.

  16. Thanks!
I hope too the ratings climb up, it deserves it!

  17. You're going to love that cliffhanger

  18. It'll be easier to forgive Kane at the end of episode 3; he can be stressful, but I like how much complexity the writers are putting into him

  19. You'll understand why president wallace and Mt. Weather people call them grounders soon enough.
Kane's reasoning will become sounder after episode 3

  20. Imagine us who watched the screeners who have to wait like 3 weeks to see episode 4!
It's really a double edge sword

  21. I think there's going to be a breaking point between the arkers and the 100, they already stablished their own civilization down here, so once they get out of Mt. Weather I don't think they are going to be very forthcoming with the adult's rules

  22. It was already a big surprise during season 1 and season 2 is keeping the momentum!

  23. It has to do with a power struggle; even though the "kids" are the ones with the most experience on the ground it's a nice pretext to talk about the age to take control of things down in the ground. I don't agree with what they are doing, but it does make sense

  24. I hope that at some point that happens and that we get more exploring. It would be nice if The 100 find a destroyed city.

  25. How are they going to fit all these in 40 minutes. I am so excited about The 100 this season. Hope the ratings go up this episode. The tension between Kane and Bellamy will be fun to watch.

  26. I look forward to that. His development last season was one of my favorite things about the show. I felt like the only Kane fan for a very long time!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yeah, his development last season was pretty outstanding

  28. Oh wow! Excellent preview! Makes me really jealous of your job =P especially when you say that you had to (rather got to) watch the 3rd episode right away! LOL!
But wow, really looking forward to the episodes. Sure hope the ratings pick up ... this show is exactly what I've wanted to watch for so long - survival in a post apocalyptic world - my favourite genre, and one that doesn't really get dealt with properly, if I may add!

  29. Now that I've seen them both... Wow! The second episode was totally better than the first one!
And that end! Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat just happened!
I want to watch the third episode but I'll wait 'til tomorrow morning! I hope it's as good as the first two.

  30. Oh yeah, it was so weird to watch the unfinished version. Both my sister and I watched it from my laptop and we just couldn't keep it together,
    Pretty cool episode though

  31. One of the sad things about watching this screener is that since I got it I have to wait 4-5 more weeks before watching a new episode. And that's a long time

    ReplyDelete
  32. It surely is fun to watch.
And they manage to fit all in 40 minutes just fine, they got the right balance of things

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh dear! Uhm, no ... not jealous of that =P But seriously, how awesome is your job =P

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think people need to give Kane a break. He's trying his best and it's obviously going to take some trial and error to find out what works down here on earth. He's leading the only way he knows how. Besides, if you were him and you show up on earth and the kids are in the state they are, would you really think they did such an awesome job? Don't forget..they haven't been in regular contact for a long time. They don't know what's been going on.

That being said, I cant wait to see this cliffhanger and I especially can't wait for ep 3. I'm dying to find out what Abby does that gets her tazed and I want to see how Kane reacts to it. I have a feeling he's not going to be as cold towards it as when he tried getting her floated. I feel like their relationship has progressed to the point that you could call them friends, or at least they have a mutual respect for each other even if they rarely agree. I don't think it's going to be easy for him to see. At least I hope so. I'll be happy as long as their relationship doesn't go back to the way it was in the first ep. I like them better as friends..or even eventually more than that :)
