"Social Media can be confusing if your super old and dumb"
Whilst the pilot was more of an introduction to Eliza and therefore very much centered around her, this episode shines a light a little more on Henry. "Un-Tag My Heart" is written by Amelie Gillette who Wikipedia has informed me has written for NBC's The Office, where would we be without Google Search. A new title sequence was featured, whilst not bad, I do wish they kept the "Left Me Take A Selfie" song, it was catchy. I do like the new title sequence it conveys a sort of Tumblr like feel with the use of colors and personality traits but it wasn't what I had expected.
Henry continues to teach Eliza life lessons in this episode, his lessons are more focused on Eliza and Freddy's relationship as opposed to the pilot which was more about getting in touch with reality and escaping from virtual reality. Eliza in turn teaches Henry the joys of Facebook.
Some people may find Karen Gillan's Eliza Dooley quite annoying but I think she's a good representation of our society. Whilst she may be over the top sometimes it's not exactly untrue. I just happened to be on Vine and Tumblr as usual and saw some strange things on the rise(which isn't really anything new). Literally a girl, like most, was dying over the new One Direction songs, I can understand someone's love for their favorite band but the stuff they have to say is cray as Eliza would say, #Weirdos. Young girls around 12+ literally have the most inappropriate things to say to guys that are twice there age, it makes you wonder how twisted society has become with all the media's influence #SorryNotSorry.
Even though Eliza wears skimpy short shorts, I can't help but say she looks good in everything but as Henry says, it's not exactly that most respectable choice of clothing.
Henry is trying to find a catch phrase for the new tear drop product, during this scene we learn he doesn't have Facebook which in reality isn't too much of a problem, though for me, as i'm in University/ College it's a bonus if you have one since there's groups and people discuss their assignments etc, so lucky Henry isn't in University/ College anymore so it's really handy. However maybe this is the reason he doesn't have many friends... Nah, it's because he puts his job first. Since Henry doesn't have Facebook, its sort of social exclusion that's actively enforced by his fellow colleagues.
But like all good things, signing up is easy, and Henry joins Facebook! Whilst Henry is discovering the wonders of Facebook or as every Grandma would put it, "Facebook is crack". He's watching viral videos, taking quizzes - finding out he's Sansa Stark (I always find those quizzes so predictable...) - and also getting poked by his mother. Just wait to he learns about FarmVille or SnapChat or the fact that we can't message our friends within the Facebook App and are manipulated into downloading the Messenger App.
Later on, Henry and Eliza FaceTime whilst she's at the Salvation Army picking out an asexual outfit for tonight's 'Book Club' meeting. Henry continues enjoying Facebook now through the App on his phone and accidently tags himself as his ex-girlfriend's baby, this was kind of silly, I've never heard of anyone who accidently tagged themselves in photos, it's more a priority to un-tag yourself out of 'bad' photos. Though I really felt with Henry trying to undo his mistake, I don't know how many times if typed something and it auto corrected and me being a super fast typer always hits enter before reading my messages, once its out there, it can't be unseen unfortunately.
The supporting characters, that is Eliza's neighbors were nice enough to let her join their 'Book Club' even offering her a homemade Pop Tart before realising she hasn't even read the book, just 8 pages, but in her defence, it wasn't even really that good anyway. The supporting characters have yet to be interesting enough to make me remember them besides Charmonique, maybe because her name is really unique and maybe because I enjoy her characters interactions with Eliza.
In a panic Henry makes his way to Eliza and easily lets himself in (shouldn't these girls be locking their doors). All the girls think this a Jerry Maguire moment but its #Not. Once Henry lets them know what he's done it gets even more #Awkward. Eliza un-tags him but she informs him that his ex probably saw it since Facebook sends out Alerts to keep out the pervs. Which in all honesty doesn't really keep out the pervs, their still there, there just smarter, they don't like the photos just browse this way no one knows what there doing (I only know this because during school we were told about the dangers of computers).
Towards the end of the episode, Eliza without watching where she's walking gets knocked over by a car before stumbling up and falling into a manhole. Just her luck, could things get any better? But alas Henry comes to visit Eliza, like a good friend and coincidentally so does her 'boyfriend', I guess we can call him that. This time he wants to take Eliza home. At first she just thinks it's another booty call and since she's bandaged, its not that good of an idea and Henry chips in to. But he wants to drive her home, to be seen in public, well really it's the dead of night but public nonetheless and she's overjoyed.
Before the episode ends, Henry is on the phone to Eliza outside her building, checking up on her and telling her he'll wake her up in an hour, a really nice sentiment to end the episode. You can tell there's chemistry between the two, but I think Henry will be the first to realize it.
This may not be the #MostCriticallyAcclaimed comedy, but its comedy that's meant to be enjoyed and I think it's accomplishing it's mission (for those who enjoy it, the same can't be said by the #Haters) it just needs is to smooth out the rough edges, show some character development as the show progress and Selfie could reach it's full potential.
Lesson 1: Favorite tweets from your haters, you have to love your haters, they make you famous and more importantly it shows them you're not affected by hateful tweets (or just block them, but as Eliza said in the pilot you have to make like "Elsa and Let It Go".
Lesson 2: Guy's love it when you laugh at their jokes and make them feel powerful.
Lesson 3: It hurts when girls don't laugh at your jokes.
Lesson 4: Without Facebook you can't be sure who else in your class has gone ugly... Or who's living their dreams... Who's even on LinkedIn, I for one never knew what that was.
Lesson 5: Don't always respond your boyfriend/ girlfriends texts, don't sext and don't suck on pens (no pun intended).
Lesson 6: Don't let your life revolve around the person your sleeping with, join a Book Club for "Adult Virgins".
Lesson 7: Once the option of Stalking your exes is present, you can't stop it, it's like crack. (A lot of crack references this episode, to both Facebook and Exes).
Quotes:
Eliza: "Having haters online means that you've made it"
Henry: "While were at it, do you think that these tight tights and those short shorts and those high high heels are appropriate office attire"
Eliza: "Don't get all slut-shamey on me just cuz you don't get my generation"
Henry: "You are what Jamie Foxx and my generation refer to as a Booty Call and if your behavior persists that is all you'll ever be"
Henry: "The first friend is my mom, just like in real life"
Henry: "You need to become the kind of person that doesn't spend all their time thinking about the opposite sex"
Eliza: "So like a lesbian?"
I hope you enjoyed the episode and my review, I'll be reviewing the show for the entire season. On a side note, for a show thats supposed to be very social, the Twitter page isn't very social and @The_Doolio isn't as popular as she is on TV. I do wish Karen Gillan would live tweet more often, hopefully one day Karen Gillan will respond to my tweets :)
What did you guys think of Eliza's new look? Did you enjoy the episode more than the pilot? For any Whovians out there, I'd like to wish that Arthur Darvill would guest as an old boyfriend or even Matt Smith, who would you like to Guest Star? Let me know in the comments.
Watch Selfie on Tuesdays at 8|7 c on ABC.
